Amit Shah’s Kolkata Visit Packed with Events, Possible Meeting with Deceased Doctor’s Family Amid RG Kar Hospital Protests

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews,

October 27, 2024, Kolkata :  Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Kolkata on Saturday night aboard a BSF aircraft, touching down at Kolkata Airport at approximately 10:25 p.m. With a series of high-profile engagements lined up, Shah’s visit comes at a politically charged moment as tensions run high over recent incidents in the state. Upon arrival, he headed to a Rajarhat hotel, where he spent the night.

On Sunday morning, Shah is scheduled to travel to Kalyani via helicopter to participate in a BSF function. Following the event, he is expected to return to Kolkata in the afternoon to join a membership drive, aiming to bolster BJP’s grassroots support. Shah will also hold a strategic meeting with BJP state leadership in preparation for the upcoming by-elections. During this session, Shah is anticipated to assess the party’s organizational standing in Bengal, receiving updates from state BJP president Dr. Sukanta Majumder and opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari.

In the midst of his packed schedule, the Union Home Minister may potentially include an unscheduled visit to the family of Dr. Abhaya, a young doctor whose tragic death at RG Kar Medical College has sparked widespread protests. The doctor’s father had reached out to Shah through a formal letter, requesting a meeting. State BJP sources indicate that a meeting with Dr. Abhaya’s family would align with their call for justice in the case, especially as the incident has become a flashpoint for criticism of the state’s healthcare system and alleged administrative lapses.

Should Shah decide to meet with Dr. Abhaya’s family, the BJP believes this would send a powerful message of solidarity and add weight to their demand for an impartial investigation. As one of the country’s top political figures, his presence could amplify calls for justice, energizing the RG Kar protest movement. Whether the Home Minister can accommodate this meeting amid his busy itinerary remains unconfirmed, but state BJP officials are keen to ensure it happens.

After the day’s events, Shah is set to return to his Rajarhat hotel for a brief rest before his scheduled departure to Delhi later in the evening.

Amit Shah Inaugurates Modern Passenger Terminal at Petrapol, Promises “Achche Din” for Bengal Starting 2026

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews,

October 27, 2024, Kolkata :  Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated a state-of-the-art passenger terminal at Petrapol port on Sunday, signaling the start of what he claims will be a period of positive transformation for West Bengal. In his address, Shah assured citizens that “Achche din [better days] are not far away” and will begin in earnest from 2026, the year of the next state assembly elections. Shah’s remarks included a sharp critique of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government, arguing that central government schemes intended for the welfare of Bengal’s citizens have failed to reach them under the current administration.

During his visit, Shah emphasized the significance of Petrapol, a crucial border crossing with Bangladesh in Bangaon, North 24 Parganas. The Home Minister reiterated the importance of managing cross-border movements and raised concerns about what he termed “disturbances to Bengal’s peace” due to unauthorized migration. Shah acknowledged that legal visitors from Bangladesh, numbering around 5,000-6,000, often cross the border for medical treatment in India, particularly benefiting from healthcare services at AIIMS Kalyani, which brings economic opportunities to local communities. However, he underscored that unchecked cross-border movement has led to societal strains and pledged that, if the BJP comes to power in 2026, infiltration would be decisively curbed.

Shah also contrasted the developmental strides under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government with what he described as a period of stagnation under the previous UPA administration. In a pointed reminder, he highlighted that during UPA’s tenure, the TMC was part of the coalition, implying the state government’s responsibility for perceived shortcomings during that period. Shah presented financial data, emphasizing that Modi’s government has allocated significantly higher funds for Bengal’s development over the past decade than the previous government, further stating that Modi remains committed to Bengal’s prosperity.

The Union Home Minister’s visit and statements are being widely interpreted as a precursor to the BJP’s campaign narrative for the 2026 elections, focusing on governance issues, cross-border security, and socio-economic development. As Bengal prepares for this electoral journey, Shah’s remarks signal the BJP’s intent to position itself as a viable alternative to the TMC, underscoring both the challenges and promises for Bengal’s future.

Rahul Gandhi Expresses Discontent Over Congress Candidate List for Maharashtra Assembly Elections

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews,

October 27, 2024, New Delhi : Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has voiced dissatisfaction with his party’s candidate selection for the upcoming Maharashtra assembly polls, set for November 20. The elections, which will be conducted in a single phase, see October 29 as the final date for submitting nomination papers. With two days left, efforts to resolve seat-sharing disputes within the opposition alliance Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) are intensifying.

So far, MVA has been able to allocate candidates for 217 out of the 288 seats in the Maharashtra Assembly. Over the weekend, the Congress finalized candidates for 39 seats, with 16 candidates announced on Sunday and 23 on Saturday. Meanwhile, Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena has fielded candidates for a total of 80 seats, with 15 announced in the latest list. Sharad Pawar’s NCP has put forth candidates for 66 constituencies. However, both parties in the alliance have overlapped in several constituencies, causing friction.

While the NDA’s allies observe the unfolding seat allocation struggle, Rahul Gandhi’s dissatisfaction with the Maharashtra Congress Screening Committee is evident. Sources report that Gandhi is particularly concerned about seats being allocated to Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena in districts where Congress has a historically strong presence. He questions the strategy, especially given the Congress’s aspirations to contest 110 seats across the state.

The party’s internal goal was bolstered by its success in reaching 99 seats in the Lok Sabha elections earlier this year, creating a sense of optimism. However, a recent loss in Haryana has cast a shadow over this optimism, fueling tensions within the Congress about the Maharashtra campaign strategy.

Gandhi has reportedly conveyed that he feels Shiv Sena was awarded more seats than necessary, particularly in Congress strongholds like Mumbai and Vidarbha. Congress legislative party leader Balasaheb Thorat, state party representative Ramesh Chennithala, and state president Nana Patole have been tasked with negotiating seat adjustments within the MVA alliance. However, Gandhi is displeased with their approach, which he believes has overly favored Shiv Sena at Congress’s expense.

Further adding to his concerns, Gandhi feels that certain segments within the OBC community have been given preference on the candidate list, while other groups have been overlooked. A number of critical seats, however, remain unresolved, leaving Congress leaders in a last-minute scramble to finalize a coherent strategy for the alliance.

With just days remaining, the challenges within the alliance and the internal rifts over candidate allocations suggest that the Congress faces a challenging path ahead in the Maharashtra assembly elections.

Election Preparations Heat Up in Maharashtra as Commission Cracks Down on Corruption

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, October 26, 2024, Kolkata: As preparations ramp up for the upcoming Maharashtra elections, the Election Commission is taking decisive steps to ensure a peaceful and fair electoral process. With significant challenges posed by key political figures like Sharad Pawar and the BJP, officials are poised to combat the influence of money and muscle power in this high-stakes contest.

Tensions are escalating as both major parties intensify their campaigning efforts. In-depth analyses of seat allocations and candidate strategies are also underway. The Code of Conduct came into effect in Maharashtra on October 15, prompting the commission to implement measures aimed at maintaining the integrity of the elections.

The Chief Election Officer of Maharashtra revealed that from October 15 to 25, officials conducted a series of raids, resulting in the seizure of assets valued at ₹104 million. The confiscated items include substantial amounts of cash, illegal drugs, liquor, and valuable metals, highlighting the commission’s commitment to addressing electoral malpractice.

In a proactive approach, the Election Commission has mobilized various agencies, including the Income Tax Department, LISH, Revenue Intelligence, Narcotics Bureau, and Customs and Excise Department. Special operations have been notably concentrated in the suburbs of Mumbai, as well as in the districts of Nagpur and Ratnagiri.

Furthermore, the commission reported that, to date, 1,144 complaints have been lodged through the CVIGIL app, with an impressive 99% of these complaints investigated and resolved.

Maharashtra is set to vote in a single phase on November 20, with the counting of votes for the 288-seat Assembly elections scheduled for November 23. As the election date approaches, the focus remains on ensuring a transparent and accountable process amid the charged political atmosphere.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni Appointed Election Brand Ambassador for Jharkhand Elections

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, October 26, 2024, Kolkata: The National Election Commission has appointed former Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni as the election brand ambassador for the upcoming Jharkhand elections, as announced by Jharkhand Chief Electoral Officer K. Ravikumar during a press conference.

Dhoni, a legendary figure in Indian cricket, has been a prominent leader of the national team for many years. This time, he has been entrusted with a significant responsibility by the Election Commission. “Mahendra Singh Dhoni has granted permission to the Election Commission to use his image. He will play a crucial role in sensitizing and encouraging the public to participate in the voting process,” Ravikumar stated.

The Election Commission is actively engaging with Dhoni to strategize on future election-related initiatives. Experts believe that Dhoni’s immense popularity, especially among the youth, will be instrumental in motivating the new generation to vote. Given this, the Election Commission has chosen him as the brand ambassador to foster greater voter turnout.

While this initiative is not entirely new, as former cricket captain Sachin Tendulkar was appointed as the National Icon in 2023, the trend continues with cricketer Shubman Gill recently selected as the state icon for Punjab.

The Jharkhand Assembly elections are set to take place in two phases on November 13 and 20, with counting scheduled for November 23. The first phase will cover 43 assembly constituencies, while the second phase will encompass 38 constituencies, marking a significant opportunity for voter engagement in the region.

Drama Unfolds in JPC Meeting on Waqf Bill: TMC’s Kalyan Banerjee Removed After Heated Exchange, Allegations of Targeting Surface

Drama Unfolds in JPC Meeting on Waqf Bill

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, October 25, 2024, Kolkata: Tensions ran high at the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) meeting on the Waqf Bill on October 22, where a heated exchange led to Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalyan Banerjee being dismissed from the committee following an outburst. In the midst of a fierce argument, Banerjee reportedly lost his temper, smashing a glass water bottle on the table in frustration. The incident, which left his hand injured, saw him leaving the room with a bandage on his hand, supported by AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi.

Witnesses report that as discussions on the Waqf Bill intensified, verbal exchanges escalated into a near-scuffle between Banerjee and BJP MP Abhijit Gangopadhyay, a former Calcutta High Court judge. Amidst the tension, a broken glass bottle lay on the table, adding to the charged atmosphere. Allegations surfaced that Banerjee had attempted to throw the bottle toward JPC Chairperson Jagdambika Pal, though Banerjee dismissed these accusations, instead pointing to what he claimed was a targeted attack against him for his strong stance on secularism.

“I am being singled out because I stand firm against communal agendas,” Banerjee commented, speaking about the incident for the first time since it occurred. “I have faced threats before, and there is even a plot to eliminate me. They can go as far as killing me for my commitment to non-communal values and secularism,” he added.

Despite being removed from the committee, Banerjee remains defiant, with BJP MPs now urging for a suspension from the Lok Sabha as well. The demand for stricter action underscores the mounting tensions between BJP and TMC representatives, especially on sensitive legislative issues like the Waqf Bill.

Banerjee, however, voiced disappointment over his treatment by Chairperson Jagdambika Pal, recalling that he had celebrated Pal’s birthday just the night before. “This lack of courtesy is disappointing. I got six stitches on my hand, and yet here I am, unfairly targeted,” he remarked.

The incident highlights the intensifying political rift within parliamentary discussions, raising questions about decorum and the challenges of maintaining bipartisan cooperation on contentious bills. The JPC is expected to issue a formal statement regarding the incident in the coming days, as Parliament braces for potential disciplinary proceedings against Banerjee.

Cyclone Dana Nears Landfall: Heavy Rain and Strong Winds to Impact Coastal Regions of Odisha and West Bengal

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, October 24, 2024, Kolkata: Cyclone Dana, a powerful storm named by Qatar, is rapidly advancing towards the Odisha and West Bengal coastlines, with landfall expected to begin between Paradwip and Damra in Odisha later today.

The cyclone is currently 255 km from Paradwip and 410 km from Sagardwip, moving northwest at a speed of 15 km per hour. Wind speeds are currently at 100 km per hour and are expected to intensify to 100-110 km per hour upon landfall.

Cyclone ‘Dana’ Approaches: West Bengal and Odisha Brace for Impact

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, October 24, 2024, Kolkata: Cyclone ‘Dana’ is intensifying, with Odisha and West Bengal on high alert, preparing for potential devastation. With wartime-like emergency operations underway, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee held a press conference at Nabanna on Thursday afternoon, updating the public on the measures taken and the anticipated threats.

In addition to Odisha and West Bengal, Cyclone Dana is projected to affect Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, and Tamil Nadu, with winds expected to reach speeds of 40 km/h in several districts. Heavy rainfall has already begun in coastal areas, including Kolkata, and the cyclone’s full impact is expected to be felt in Bengal by Thursday night.

The Chief Minister revealed that 3,56,941 people have been identified for evacuation from coastal areas, with 1,49,837 already relocated to safety. Currently, 851 relief camps are operational, providing shelter to those affected, with approximately 86,000 people housed in the reef camps.

Banerjee emphasized the state’s proactive approach, highlighting the creation of flood relief centers under her government and launching a 24/7 helpline to assist the public during the crisis. “We are fully prepared,” she stated, “Human life is priceless. All necessary measures are in place. We will monitor the situation closely, particularly in the districts.”

To ensure immediate response and oversight, the Chief Minister has decided to stay at Nabanna overnight, overseeing disaster management efforts as the cyclone makes landfall. Ministers have also been instructed to remain vigilant in their respective areas, coordinating relief efforts and ensuring the safety of citizens.

Banerjee also issued a stern warning to fishermen and sea travelers, urging them to avoid dangerous areas. With cloudy skies and increasing rainfall already affecting coastal regions since Wednesday, the Meteorological Department predicts even heavier downpours as Cyclone Dana strengthens.

The public has been urged to remain calm and avoid spreading rumors or panic. For any emergencies, citizens can reach the Nabanna Helpline at 033-2214-3526. All emergency services, including the power department, are fully mobilized to respond to the approaching disaster.

“We will continue to monitor the situation until landfall,” Banerjee assured, emphasizing the state’s readiness to handle the storm and its aftermath.

Coastal Communities Brace for Cyclone Dana as Precautions Intensify

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, October 24, 2024, Hooghly: As Cyclone Dana approaches, coastal areas along the Bay of Bengal in West Bengal and Odisha are experiencing unprecedented calm as residents heed warnings and evacuate. The Shunshan Ferry Ghat has ceased operations, with the ticket counter closed and the entrance gate locked. Following directives from the state government, local authorities have ordered the suspension of all ferry services for safety reasons.

Starting at 5 PM yesterday, ferry operations from Uttarpara and Guptipara were halted. Despite the closures, some uninformed passengers attempted to access the ferry services, only to find the gates locked. Rainfall has commenced this morning, driven by strong winds from the cyclone, which have darkened the skies and prompted most residents to remain indoors unless absolutely necessary. The usually bustling roads near the ghat are nearly deserted, and many local jute shops remain shuttered.

While train services continue to operate normally today, Eastern Railway has announced that beginning tomorrow morning, in anticipation of Cyclone Dana’s peak impact, 68 trains in the Howrah division will be canceled. This includes all local trains on the Howrah-Arambagh branch. Authorities are prioritizing passenger safety as the storm looms, urging the public to stay informed and prepared.

Supreme Court Intervenes to Protect Trees Amid Kolkata Metro Expansion Controversy

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, October 23, 2024, Kolkata :

In a significant ruling regarding the Kolkata Metro Rail expansion, the Supreme Court has intervened to halt the planned felling of 943 trees, emphasizing the need for environmental protection. A bench comprising Justice KV Viswanathan and Justice PK Misrar ordered that “no fresh felling of trees for Kolkata Metro Rail works” can occur without approval from the Union Ministry of Environment.

This decision comes in the wake of a legal challenge initiated by senior lawyer Jaideep Gupta on June 20, which contested a previous verdict by a division bench of the Calcutta High Court. The Supreme Court’s ruling on Wednesday not only stayed the High Court’s verdict but also granted permission for the metro expansion to continue, provided it adheres to environmental regulations.

During the proceedings, Gupta highlighted the extensive tree removal planned for a 10-kilometer extension of the metro, arguing that a significant number of trees were being cut without the necessary permissions. He expressed concerns about the environmental damage that would result from the loss of these trees, particularly in the Maidan area, which is often referred to as the “lungs of the city.” The court had previously ruled on September 13 that no trees could be cut in the Maidan area for metro work, reiterating the importance of preserving this vital green space.

The issue of tree felling for the metro expansion has sparked considerable public concern, leading the organization People United for Better Living in Kolkata to file a Public Interest Litigation in 2023, aimed at safeguarding the area’s trees. It is feared that up to 700 trees could be cut down for the metro work stretching from Mominpur to Dharmatala, further amplifying worries about environmental degradation.

In defense of the project’s environmental considerations, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta stated that while some trees were uprooted, they were being relocated to other sites, with 94 trees already replanted. However, the Supreme Court’s latest ruling reinforces the need for stringent oversight regarding any further tree removal linked to the metro expansion, ensuring that environmental concerns are prioritized as the project progresses.

As the situation develops, stakeholders are encouraged to closely monitor the implications of this ruling on both the metro expansion and the environment of Kolkata.

Cyclone Dana Approaches: Rainfall Begins as Authorities Mobilize for Safety

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, October 23, 2024, Kolkata :

As Cyclone Dana makes its presence felt, the skies over West Bengal have turned ominously heavy since Wednesday morning, bringing with it the onset of rain across the region. The deep depression in the Bay of Bengal intensified into a cyclonic storm early Wednesday and is currently charting a course toward the Odisha coast.

According to Delhi’s Mausam Bhavan, the cyclone is moving northwest at a speed of 15 km per hour. As of now, Paradwip in Odisha is approximately 520 km away, while Sagardwip in West Bengal is 600 km distant, and Khepupara in Bangladesh is about 610 km from the storm’s center.

The Alipur Meteorological Department confirmed that the low-pressure system transformed into a cyclonic storm at 5:30 AM. Cyclone Dana is expected to make landfall near Odisha’s Dhamara port between late Thursday night and early Friday morning, with wind speeds projected to exceed 100 to 110 km/h, possibly reaching up to 120 km/h.

In preparation for the cyclone’s impact, local administrations in East Medinipur and South 24 Parganas have implemented precautionary measures. Public announcements are being made using microphones to alert coastal residents, particularly in high-risk areas such as Mandarmani, Tajpur, Digha, and Shankarpur, where the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been deployed.

Coastal regions including Sagardwip, Namkhana, Patharpratima, and Bakkhali have been under strict surveillance, with a ban on sea access instituted in Gangasagar, Fraserganj, and Bakkhali to ensure public safety. While the full extent of Cyclone Dana’s impact remains uncertain, authorities are on high alert and have mobilized all necessary resources to mitigate risks.

As the storm approaches, residents are urged to remain vigilant and follow safety protocols issued by local authorities. The situation will be closely monitored as the cyclone progresses, with updates to be provided as necessary.

Bengal ready to face cyclonic storm, schools to remain closed from October 23-26: Mamata

A well-marked low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal intensified into a depression on Tuesday as it rolled towards the eastern coast with the likelihood of turning into a severe cyclonic storm

PTI, Calcutta, 22.10.24 :West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday said the state administration was ready to respond to any disaster that could occur due to an impending cyclone and announced that primary and secondary schools in nine districts would remain closed from Wednesday to October 26 as a precautionary measure.

She said teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and SDRF have already been deployed and integrated control rooms, at both state and district levels, become functional 24X7.

A well-marked low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal intensified into a depression on Tuesday as it rolled towards the eastern coast with the likelihood of turning into a severe cyclonic storm, the IMD said.

“Our government is ready to face this cyclonic storm. We have already started integrated control rooms at state and district levels and they are working 24X7. As a precautionary measure, fishermen have been asked not to venture into the seas. Public address systems are in place in the coastal areas. The district magistrates (DMs) and Superintendents of police (SPs) have been asked to keep their eyes open till the situation normalises,” Banerjee said.

As per the prediction of the India Meteorological Department, the weather system may gain strength and the impending cyclone make landfall somewhere between Puri and Sagar Island.

“The wind speed may reach above 110 km per hour,” she added.

The IMD, in its bulletin, said the well-marked low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal concentrated into a depression and lay centred at 700 km away from Paradip in Odisha and 750 km from Sagar Island in West Bengal around 8.30 am on Tuesday.

The depression will further intensify into a cyclonic storm by October 23 and cross north Odisha and southern West Bengal coasts between Puri and Sagar Island in the early morning hours of October 25 as a severe cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 100-110 kmph, gusting to 120 kmph, it said.

The Bengal CM said districts of South and North 24 Parganas, Purba Medinipur and its coastal areas are expected to be affected severely.

“Besides the neighbouring districts of Paschim Medinipur, Bankura, Jhargram and Hooghly are likely to be affected. Schools will remain closed in these districts from October 23 to 26 as a precautionary measure. We do not want to take any risks and do not want anyone to face danger. Schools and colleges are sometimes used as shelters for people,” she said.

According to a notification issued by the state government, educational institutes will remain closed in the districts of North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Purba Medinipur, Paschim Medinipur, Jhargram, Bankura, Howrah, Hooghly and Kolkata from Wednesday till October 26.

The Bengal CM said the district administrations have been asked to shift all those residing in low-lying areas of these districts to safe places.

“We have started taking measures since yesterday. The ferry movements in coastal areas and districts will remain non-operational till the situation returns to normalcy. Tourist movements have been monitored as a precautionary measure,” she said.

Banerjee said Chief Secretary Manoj Pant held a meeting with all the departments, NDRF, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), power utilities and municipal corporations concerned.

Chaos Erupts at Joint Parliamentary Committee Meeting Over Waqf Bill: TMC MP Injured in Heated Clash

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, October 22, 2024, New Delhi :  A heated altercation broke out during a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) meeting in Delhi on Monday, leading to injuries for Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalyan Banerjee. The incident occurred during a tense debate over the contentious Waqf Bill, which escalated into a physical altercation, resulting in Banerjee sustaining injuries to his hand from a broken glass bottle.

According to sources, the fracas began when Banerjee entered into a verbal spat with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MPs, particularly Abhijit Gangopadhyay. As the discussion on the Waqf Bill grew more heated, tempers flared, and Kalyan Banerjee reportedly smashed a glass water bottle on the table in frustration. In the process, his hand was cut by the shards of broken glass, causing significant injuries to his thumb and index finger.
Witnesses claim that the chaos took a dramatic turn when Banerjee allegedly attempted to throw the broken bottle towards the chairman’s desk, although this claim has been denied by Banerjee’s party colleagues. Amid the confusion, BJP MPs accused Banerjee of using inappropriate language during the argument.

Following the injury, Banerjee was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital where he received four stitches for his wounds. Despite the injury, Banerjee returned to the meeting later, escorted back by AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh.

The meeting, chaired by BJP MP Jagdambika Pal, was convened to hear the opinions of a panel of retired judges and legal experts on the proposed Waqf Bill. The discussions took a contentious turn when opposition MPs, including those from TMC, raised objections to certain aspects of the bill. The disagreement soon spiraled into a verbal clash, culminating in the altercation.

The incident has sparked outrage across the political spectrum, with many expressing concern over the lack of decorum during parliamentary proceedings. Several MPs present during the incident confirmed that the atmosphere in the room was highly charged, with some accusing Banerjee of crossing a line by using inappropriate language. However, others have downplayed the severity of the altercation, stating that the intensity of the debate led to an unfortunate but unintentional incident.

The Waqf Bill, which aims to revise and regulate the administration of Waqf properties, has been a point of contention between the ruling and opposition parties, with the opposition alleging that the bill undermines the rights of minority communities. Monday’s meeting was intended to address these concerns, but the fiery exchanges overshadowed the substance of the discussions.

As the dust settles from the incident, parliamentary leaders are calling for an investigation into the matter and stressing the importance of maintaining decorum during such crucial meetings. The Joint Parliamentary Committee is expected to resume its work on the Waqf Bill once tensions cool and the injured MP fully recovers.

Supreme Court Rebukes ED for Overreach in Chhattisgarh Corruption Case Arrest

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, October 22, 2024, Kolkata: In a scathing reprimand, the Supreme Court of India strongly criticized the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for its handling of the arrest of former IAS officer Anil Tuteja in connection with the Chhattisgarh excise corruption case. The court raised serious concerns about the agency’s conduct, specifically questioning the legality of the arrest, and accused the ED of overreach in its investigative actions.

The case stems from allegations of large-scale excise corruption amounting to ₹2,100 crore during the tenure of the Congress-led government in Chhattisgarh between 2019 and 2022. The ED, tasked with probing financial crimes, initiated its investigation into the matter. In April 2024, Anil Tuteja, a high-ranking bureaucrat at the time, was arrested as part of the probe.

During a hearing on Monday, the Supreme Court expressed its displeasure over the manner in which the ED conducted the arrest. Referring to Article 21 of the Indian Constitution, which safeguards the right to life and personal liberty, the court reminded the agency that no individual’s fundamental rights should be compromised. “There is something called Article 21,” the court firmly stated. “It guarantees a citizen’s right to life and liberty, and the central agency cannot strip someone of these basic rights.”

The defense counsel representing Tuteja narrated a series of events that highlighted procedural concerns. According to the lawyer, Tuteja had appeared at the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) office in Bengal for questioning on April 20. ED officers, present during the interrogation, issued a summons to Tuteja which was set to expire by noon that day. Given that the period had already lapsed, Tuteja refused to accept the notice. Following this, the ED issued a fresh summons instructing him to report to their office later in the evening at 5:30 p.m.

After enduring a day of questioning at the ACB office, Tuteja was reportedly taken to the ED office where he was interrogated throughout the night. He was arrested in the early hours of April 21, sparking outrage from both Tuteja’s legal team and now, the Supreme Court.

The apex court harshly questioned the need for the ED to conduct its inquiry simultaneously with the ongoing investigation by the ACB. “Why did the ED feel the need to intervene during the ACB’s questioning? How can the ED issue a notice in the middle of another agency’s inquiry? Such haste is not even seen in cases of terrorism or criminal litigation,” the court remarked, calling the ED’s actions a “serious breach.”

In response to the court’s blistering critique, the ED maintained that Tuteja had willingly visited their office and was not forced into custody. However, Tuteja’s lawyer countered this claim, insisting that the arrest was illegal and demanded his client’s immediate bail.

The Supreme Court’s reprimand underscores a growing scrutiny of investigative agencies’ methods, especially in cases involving high-profile individuals. The court has reserved its final judgment on the bail plea, signaling that the agency’s actions will continue to be under a legal microscope.

The hearing has sparked widespread attention, with many viewing the court’s stance as a reaffirmation of the judiciary’s role in protecting individual rights against perceived misuse of power by investigative bodies.

Family of Deceased RG Kar Doctor Appeals to Amit Shah for Justice Amid Ongoing Protests

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, October 22, 2024, Kolkata : In a poignant plea for justice, the father of Tilottama, a doctor who tragically passed away while working at RG Kar Hospital, reached out to Union Home Minister Amit Shah via email on Tuesday morning. In his message, he expressed his deep helplessness and requested a meeting to discuss the emotional turmoil following his daughter’s untimely death.

The case surrounding Tilottama’s passing has ignited widespread outrage, prompting junior doctors to rally for justice. Although a recent hunger strike has concluded, the medical community is planning a mass convention for next Saturday to further amplify their demands for accountability and change.

In his email, the bereaved father not only wished the Union Home Minister a happy birthday but also emphasized the emotional strain his family is enduring since losing their daughter. He expressed hope that a meeting with Shah could provide some solace and facilitate a dialogue regarding their plight.

As of now, there has been no response from the Union Home Minister’s office, leaving the family and supporters anxious for a reply. The incident has resonated deeply within the medical community and beyond, highlighting ongoing concerns about the treatment of healthcare professionals and the need for systemic reforms in the medical sector.

The upcoming mass convention is expected to draw significant attention, as junior doctors continue to seek justice for Tilottama and advocate for better working conditions and support for medical staff. The demand for justice in this case serves as a rallying point for a larger conversation about the rights and safety of healthcare workers across the country.

Supreme Court Issues Stern Warning to Yogi Government Over Bulldozer Demolitions

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, October 22, 2024, New Delhi : In a significant ruling, the Supreme Court of India has issued a stern warning to the Yogi Adityanath government regarding its controversial use of bulldozers for demolishing properties linked to specific communities following recent communal violence in Bahraich. The court emphasized, “You know our orders. If you choose to risk disobeying them, you do so at your own peril.”

The court’s statement comes in the wake of reports that the Yogi government had initiated selective bulldozer raids on homes belonging to certain communities, raising concerns over the rule of law and the protection of citizens’ rights. Following this alarming directive, three litigants took their grievances to the Supreme Court, contesting the legality of the government’s actions.

Reports indicate that residents were given just three days to vacate and demolish their homes, and an FIR was lodged against individuals in Bahraich, further complicating the situation. The Supreme Court has since ordered that no bulldozer operations can take place until at least Wednesday, urging the state government to reconsider its aggressive approach.

The use of bulldozers as a means of state enforcement is not new in Uttar Pradesh. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, often referred to as the “Father of Bulldozers,” has gained notoriety for this strategy aimed at targeting individuals deemed to be criminals. His administration has faced increasing scrutiny over its heavy-handed tactics, especially in light of accusations that these demolitions violate fundamental rights.

In a controversial remark amidst the ongoing debates, Yogi Adityanath suggested that “criminals should perform Aarti,” further igniting discussions around the intersection of governance and morality. The Supreme Court’s intervention highlights its commitment to upholding constitutional principles, stating, “Politics cannot override the basic spirit of the Indian Constitution. A house cannot simply be demolished based on accusations alone.”

During Tuesday’s hearing, the court reiterated its position, cautioning the Yogi government against proceeding with further demolitions. The justices indicated that any such actions would be taken at the government’s own risk, underscoring the potential consequences of defying judicial orders.

As the situation develops, the eyes of the nation remain on Uttar Pradesh, where the balance between law enforcement and civil liberties is being closely scrutinized.

India and China Agree to Troop Withdrawal in Major Diplomatic Breakthrough Ahead of BRICS Summit

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, October 21, 2024, New Delhi : In a significant diplomatic breakthrough, India and China have agreed to initiate the withdrawal of troops from the Line of Actual Control (LAC), marking a positive step toward resolving the long-standing border disputes between the two nations. The agreement comes after several weeks of intense negotiations, paving the way for improved bilateral relations ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Russia for the BRICS summit.

On Monday, Foreign Secretary Vikram Mistry confirmed the development during a press briefing, stating, “For several weeks, mediators from India and China have been engaged in continuous discussions. These talks have resulted in agreements on several critical issues, including measures to address tensions along the LAC.”

According to Mistry, both countries are now prepared to take concrete steps to resolve the disputes that escalated in 2020, including the gradual withdrawal of troops from sensitive areas along the border. While the withdrawal process has been agreed upon, military surveillance will continue to ensure the security and stability of the region.

This agreement follows earlier peace-building efforts in August when both nations began discussions aimed at de-escalating tensions at the border. The latest developments represent a significant move forward in improving relations between the two Asian powers, whose ties have been strained since the 2020 border clashes.

However, the Foreign Secretary refrained from revealing specific details of the agreement, particularly concerning ongoing concerns about Chinese military construction in disputed areas along the LAC. The lack of clarity has left analysts speculating about the nature of the agreements reached, though it is clear that both sides are committed to maintaining surveillance and monitoring activities in the region to prevent further escalations.

Experts believe that this diplomatic breakthrough sets the stage for a potential bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping during the upcoming BRICS summit in Russia. If such a meeting occurs, it could signal a new chapter in India-China relations, with the possibility of further discussions on border security and regional stability.

India and China’s decision to move forward on troop withdrawal is being viewed as a major success for both countries’ diplomatic efforts, particularly for India, which has sought to restore peace at the border while ensuring the protection of its sovereignty. The development comes at a critical time for Prime Minister Modi as he prepares to engage in high-level discussions with global leaders at the BRICS summit.

While the immediate outcome is a welcome sign of easing tensions, the ongoing military surveillance underscores the fragility of the situation. Diplomatic experts caution that while this agreement is a positive step, the long-term resolution of the border disputes will require continued dialogue and cooperation.

The next few weeks will be crucial in determining how the agreement between India and China evolves and whether it leads to a lasting resolution of the border conflict that has tested diplomatic relations between the two nations for decades.

India Today: In a significant breakthrough, India and China have agreed to resume joint patrolling at key friction points along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh. This agreement follows years of military standoffs since the 2020 Galwan Valley clash, which brought the two nations to a diplomatic and military impasse.

The deal, seen as a crucial step in the disengagement process, signals progress in the historically tense areas of Depsang Plains and Demchok, where tensions have remained high since the 2020 confrontation.

Diplomatic and Military Efforts Lead to Breakthrough

According to Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, this agreement is the culmination of weeks of intense diplomatic and military negotiations. Addressing the media on Monday, Misri said, “Both sides have been in close contact over the last several weeks, working through multiple channels to address long-standing issues.”

The breakthrough follows multiple rounds of military talks that have led to disengagement at other flashpoints along the LAC, such as Pangong Tso, Gogra, and Hot Springs. Defence sources indicated that both the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the Indian Army were actively involved in the negotiations, focusing on ensuring smooth resumption of patrols in areas where disengagement has already occurred.

Depsang and Demchok, however, presented unique challenges due to their strategic importance. The agreement reactivates more than five critical patrol points under stringent monitoring, a significant achievement for both nations in stabilizing the region.

From Galwan to Depsang: Steps Toward Disengagement

The path to this agreement began after the 2020 Galwan Valley clash, which resulted in several disengagement initiatives:

  • Galwan Valley (June 2020): Following a violent skirmish, both sides agreed to disengage, establishing buffer zones.
  • Pangong Tso (February 2021): Troops withdrew from the north and south banks of Pangong Lake, marking a significant step in de-escalation.
  • Gogra Post (August 2021): Forces disengaged from Patrolling Point 17A, creating buffer zones.
  • Hot Springs (September 2022): Patrolling Point 15 saw disengagement, further easing tensions.

Depsang Plains and Demchok had remained unresolved, with negotiations stalling in previous rounds. The current agreement reflects both countries’ readiness to address these long-standing disputes and advance the disengagement process in the most challenging areas.

BRICS Summit: A Platform for Bilateral Talks

Although the specifics of the agreement are yet to be fully disclosed, further clarity is expected during the upcoming BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia. It is anticipated that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping may hold bilateral talks to finalize the modalities of the disengagement.

Defence insiders suggest that these talks will focus on determining whether patrolling will follow pre-2020 Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) or a new protocol designed to avoid further confrontation. Sources have indicated that Chinese troops will withdraw from key areas in Depsang, allowing Indian patrols to regain access to regions that had been previously blocked since 2020.

Government Hails Diplomatic Success

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar lauded the agreement as a major diplomatic achievement, emphasizing the importance of patient negotiations that began after his 2020 meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Moscow. “This agreement on patrolling is a product of very patient and persevering diplomacy. It is a positive development that will restore the peace and tranquillity that existed before 2020,” Jaishankar said.

He further noted that the agreement will enable India to resume patrolling in areas that had been blocked during the standoff, helping normalize the situation along the LAC. “There are areas where, for various reasons after 2020, they had blocked us, and we blocked them. What has happened is that we reached an understanding which will allow the patrolling… Depsang is not the only place,” Jaishankar added.

Moving Forward

The agreement to resume patrolling in the sensitive areas along the LAC marks a major step toward de-escalating tensions between India and China. While the disengagement process is still ongoing, this development is expected to stabilize the situation and prevent further confrontations, particularly in critical regions like Depsang and Demchok.

With sustained diplomatic and military efforts on both sides, the path to a lasting resolution seems closer, although the situation will continue to be monitored carefully as both nations work toward a peaceful resolution of their border disputes.
