BJP Leader Rakesh Singh Arrested After Evading Police for Five Days Over Vandalism at Congress Headquarters

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, September 4, 2025, Kolkata : After evading arrest for nearly a week, BJP leader Rakesh Singh was finally apprehended by Kolkata Police late Tuesday night in a dramatic raid at a flat in the Tangra area. Singh, who had been on the run since his involvement in a vandalism incident at the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee (WBPCC) headquarters last week, was arrested following a tip-off from a secret source.

The incident in question took place last Saturday when Singh and his supporters allegedly vandalized the Congress office in Moulali, Kolkata. Reports indicate that they smeared black ink on a picture of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, tore banners, and raised slogans in protest against remarks allegedly made about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s late mother during Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’ in Bihar. The protest quickly escalated into a confrontation, leading to widespread allegations of property damage and public disturbance.

Following the incident, police arrested several individuals associated with Singh, including Vijayprasad Dhanuk, Santoshkumar Rajbhar, and Dibyendu Samanta. However, Singh managed to avoid arrest, despite being the alleged mastermind behind the vandalism. His son, Shivam Singh, was arrested earlier this week for allegedly aiding his father’s escape. Police believe Shivam used his car to help his father flee the scene before law enforcement arrived.

Kolkata Police Joint Commissioner Rupesh Kumar confirmed Singh’s arrest, stating that a police team raided a flat in Tangra at around 2 a.m. on Tuesday after receiving a tip-off about his location. “Rakesh Singh, who had been at large for the past few days, was arrested during the raid. Police had been actively looking for him,” Kumar said.

Singh, who had remained active on social media, posted several videos during his time on the run, including one in which he threatened the police and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. In the video, Singh was seen hurling abuses at Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma, further intensifying the controversy surrounding his evasion.

The vandalism sparked outrage within the Congress party, with Bengal Congress President Subhankar Sarkar leading a protest in the form of a road blockade at Moulali Crossing. The Congress demanded the immediate arrest of all individuals involved in the attack on their headquarters, including Singh. “We will not tolerate such attacks on our party and leaders. The culprits must be brought to justice,” said Sarkar.

Following the raid and Singh’s arrest, the police have booked him for multiple charges, including vandalism and public mischief. He will be produced in court for police custody, where further investigation into the incident will take place.

The arrest of Rakesh Singh has sent ripples through Bengal’s political landscape, with both the BJP and Congress continuing to exchange barbs over the incident. The situation remains tense, with Singh’s supporters and detractors each rallying around the event, which has become a flashpoint in the ongoing political battle between the state’s major political parties.

As of now, the Kolkata Police are continuing their investigation, and more arrests could follow depending on the developments surrounding the case.

27-Year-Old Youth Loses Life in Bike-Tractor Collision on Burdwan-Arambagh Highway

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, Aug 28 2025, Kolkata :  A tragic road accident claimed the life of a 27-year-old man on Thursday morning near Radha Bazar, along the Burdwan–Arambagh State Highway (No. 7), under Khandaghosh Police Station in East Burdwan district.

The deceased has been identified as Tapan Mondal, a resident of Joynagar in South 24 Parganas, who worked as a lorry driver. According to eyewitness accounts, the accident occurred at approximately 9 a.m.

Sources revealed that a lorry carrying paddy was traveling from Medinipur to Badulia. At a junction in East Burdwan, driver Tapan Mondal alighted from the vehicle and proceeded toward Badulia on a motorbike belonging to the lorry driver. While on his way near Badulia, his motorcycle collided with the large front wheel of a brick-laden tractor that was en route to Sehara Bazar from Radha Bazar.

The impact was severe, and Tapan Mondal sustained fatal head injuries, resulting in his death at the scene. Eyewitnesses suggested that the collision occurred due to negligence on the part of the tractor driver.

Following the incident, personnel from the Seharabazar police outpost, Khandaghosh Police Station, and the traffic department rushed to the location. Authorities confirmed that the tractor involved in the crash has been seized. However, the driver fled the scene and remains untraceable.

Police have launched an investigation into the accident and efforts are underway to locate the absconding tractor driver.

Supreme Court Grants Conditional Bail to Former West Bengal Minister Partha Chatterjee in Teacher Recruitment Scam

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, Kolkata, August 19, 2025 : The Supreme Court on Monday granted conditional bail to Partha Chatterjee, former West Bengal Education Minister, in connection with the multi-crore teacher recruitment scam that has rocked the state’s education system since 2022. The apex court’s decision comes after Chatterjee spent nearly three years in detention without trial, with the Bench observing that his continued incarceration would amount to a “travesty of justice.”

A Bench comprising Justice M.M. Sundresh and Justice N. Kotiswar Singh directed the trial court to frame charges under the Prevention of Corruption Act within four weeks and to record the statements of key witnesses within two months. Only after this stage is completed will Chatterjee and two co-accused – Subires Bhattacharya, former Vice-Chancellor of North Bengal University, and Shantiprasad Sinha, former President of the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education – be released on bail.

Chatterjee, a legislator since 2001 and Education Minister from 2016 until his arrest in 2022, is accused of playing a central role in the large-scale irregularities in the recruitment of primary teachers, assistant teachers, and other education department staff. The scam came to light after unsuccessful candidates in the Teachers’ Eligibility Test (TET) approached the Calcutta High Court. On June 8, 2022, the High Court ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe, which was swiftly followed by an Enforcement Directorate (ED) investigation into money laundering aspects of the case.

Subsequent raids by the agencies uncovered what investigators described as staggering evidence. On July 22, 2022, searches at Chatterjee’s premises and those of his close associates allegedly revealed incriminating documents relating to 12 immovable properties. The most sensational discovery came from the residence of his aide, where officials seized ₹21.9 crore in cash and gold jewellery valued at over ₹76 lakh. These revelations intensified public scrutiny and added pressure on investigative agencies to pursue the case with urgency.

Chatterjee’s attempts to secure bail had repeatedly failed over the past three years. His application was first rejected by the trial court on August 3, 2023, and again dismissed by the Calcutta High Court on April 30, 2024. However, with the Supreme Court now intervening, his chances of walking out of the Presidency Correctional Facility—where he has been lodged since 2022—have significantly improved, subject to the trial court’s compliance with the apex court’s directives.

The Bench made it clear that the prolonged detention of the former minister without charges being framed or trial proceedings advancing was unacceptable. The court emphasized that justice requires a balance between accountability and the rights of the accused, noting that lower-level officials and other accused persons in the recruitment case have already been granted bail over time.

Chatterjee, once considered one of the most influential ministers in the state government, had also been granted bail in December 2024 in a separate money laundering case brought by the ED, though he remained in custody due to the pending CBI proceedings. His present conditional bail marks a turning point in the high-profile investigation that has implicated multiple figures within the state’s education establishment.

The trial court is now under strict instructions to expedite the framing of charges and examination of material witnesses. Until then, uncertainty persists regarding the exact timing of Chatterjee’s release. Nonetheless, legal experts note that the Supreme Court’s order paves the way for his possible exit from prison in the coming months.

The multi-layered case continues to evolve, with further hearings expected in connected matters, including allegations of irregular appointments in Group-C and Group-D posts. For now, the apex court’s intervention has significantly altered the course of proceedings, raising both legal and political ramifications in West Bengal’s ongoing education recruitment scandal.

Birbhum’s Bivas Adhikari Arrested for Fraud and Fake Police Station Operations

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, Kolkata, August 10, 2025 : In a major breakthrough, the Central Investigation Agency has arrested Bivas Adhikari, a notorious figure from Nalhati in Birbhum, West Bengal, for allegedly operating a fraudulent police station under the guise of an international investigation agency. The arrest, which also involved his son and four associates, comes after a detailed investigation into a web of deceit, involving fake identification cards and illegal financial extortion.

Bivas Adhikari, once linked to recruitment corruption cases, was apprehended along with his son, Arghya Adhikari, and four other individuals: Babulchandra Mandal, Pintu Pal, Samapad Mal, and Ashish Kumar. The arrests were made in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, following a covert operation by the police. The accused were found in possession of multiple forged documents, which were allegedly used to pose as official investigators and demand money from people under the pretense of conducting investigations.

According to police sources, Bivas and his associates operated a fraudulent police station, which they used to impersonate government officials. They would conduct “investigations” and extort money from the public, offering their services as if they were part of a legitimate law enforcement operation. Investigators found a large cache of counterfeit international recognition ID cards during searches at Bivas’s so-called police station.

This is not the first time Bivas Adhikari has found himself in legal trouble. Last year, in April, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had conducted a raid at his residence and ashram in Nalhati, Birbhum, seizing a large number of documents. It was also revealed that Bivas had been involved in recruitment corruption scandals in the past, with his name emerging in connection with alleged illegal appointments, which further taints his public image.

The police believe that the group’s operations extended beyond India, with Bivas and his associates reportedly claiming to have an office in the United Kingdom. Investigators hope to uncover more evidence as they continue their interrogation of the suspects.

Bivas had previously been associated with religious activities, overseeing a branch of a prominent religious ashram in Nalhati. However, the ashram’s other branches have distanced themselves from him, clarifying that it was his personal venture and not affiliated with the broader religious community. His political affiliations remain unclear, though he had once served as the district president of the Trinamool Congress (TMC). There were also rumors suggesting a close relationship with BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya, although Bivas never joined the BJP.

As investigations continue, authorities are hopeful that the evidence seized will reveal the full extent of the fraudulent network and its operations, while also uncovering any potential connections to larger political or criminal organizations.

Matrimony Scam: Woman Drugged and Robbed After Meeting Man from Matrimony Site

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, July 28, 2025, Kolkata  : A shocking incident has emerged involving a matrimonial website, as a young man, Sudip Bose, became the victim of a robbery after meeting a woman he had connected with through the platform. The incident, which occurred on the 1st of this month, has raised serious concerns about the trust and safety surrounding online matrimonial services.

Sudip Bose, a resident of Lelinagar in New Barrackpore, had been conversing with Jia Singh, a woman he met on a popular Bengali matrimonial site. After several conversations, they decided to take the next step and meet in person. The two arranged to meet at a hotel near Dumdum Airport. Initially, everything seemed normal as they sat down to have tea together. However, things soon took a dark turn.

According to Sudip, Jia Singh, under the guise of offering him a warm drink, spiked his tea with drugs, causing him to lose consciousness. When he regained his senses, he realized his wallet, mobile phone, and other valuables had been stolen. In shock and disbelief, Sudip tried to contact Jia using the phone number she had provided him but received no response. Desperate for answers, he went to the airport police station and filed a complaint.

Taking swift action, the police initiated an operation based on Sudip’s complaint. They called the woman using the number provided through the matrimonial site, arranging another meeting at the same hotel. When Jia Singh arrived at the designated location, she was promptly apprehended by the police. Authorities have now requested her to be presented before the Barrackpore court for further legal proceedings and have taken her into custody.

This incident has raised significant concerns about the safety and legitimacy of online matrimonial sites, particularly with the rise of scams involving fraudulent individuals. As the investigation continues, experts urge users to exercise caution and trust their instincts when engaging with people online.

The airport police have assured the public that they are closely monitoring such incidents and will continue to investigate further, particularly with respect to whether Jia Singh has been involved in similar activities in the past.

In light of this distressing incident, users of matrimonial sites are advised to take extra care in verifying the identities of potential matches and to avoid meeting in isolated or private locations. While online platforms can offer opportunities for connection, incidents like these serve as a stark reminder of the risks involved.

This case is also likely to stir further debate on the need for tighter regulations and safeguards in the online matrimony industry to prevent such fraudulent and dangerous activities.

Bail Extended for Sujoy Krishna Bhadra in Recruitment Corruption Case, No Relief for Confinement Requests

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews | July 23, 2025, Kolkata  : The interim bail of Sujoy Krishna Bhadra, one of the main accused in the high-profile recruitment corruption case in West Bengal, has been extended again by the Calcutta High Court. Justice Shuvra Ghosh issued the ruling, extending Bhadra’s bail until August 31, 2025. However, Bhadra’s requests for greater flexibility in his confinement conditions were rejected by the court.

Sujoy Krishna Bhadra, who has been arrested by both the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the recruitment scam, had previously spent time in jail and was subsequently admitted to the hospital due to health issues. Considering his medical condition, the Calcutta High Court had granted him interim bail under several conditions, including a strict restriction on his movement outside his residence in Behala. During the past few months, he has been confined to his home unless seeking medical treatment.

This time, Bhadra’s defense lawyer Milan Mukherjee argued for the easing of the confinement restrictions, asking the court to allow Bhadra to stay within the jurisdiction of the trial court instead of being restricted to his residence. Mukherjee also pointed out that despite the passage of five months since Bhadra was granted interim bail, the CBI had not questioned him even once in connection with the case.

However, CBI counsel Dhiraj Trivedi opposed the plea, emphasizing that the interim bail had been granted on the grounds of Bhadra’s health condition. He stated that allowing him to leave his Behala residence, even under limited conditions, would not be appropriate given the circumstances.

In response, Justice Ghosh acknowledged Bhadra’s desire to enjoy some “fresh air” but firmly reminded the accused that he was not in jail anymore. The judge further rejected Bhadra’s request to invite or interact with family members and friends at his residence. Bhadra’s plea to hold a function at his home to commemorate the first death anniversary of his wife was also dismissed by the court earlier this month. Justice Ghosh’s statement underscored that “anyone can be your relative,” reiterating that the only permissible interaction for Bhadra was with individuals involved in his medical treatment.

Bhadra, who was arrested shortly before his wife’s death, had sought permission to host a gathering to mark the anniversary, but his request was turned down by the court, which maintains strict monitoring of his activities during the interim bail period.

This is the third extension of Bhadra’s interim bail. The initial grant of interim bail was made in February 2025 on medical grounds, with the condition that his movements be severely restricted. Subsequent extensions were granted in March and April, before this latest order in July.

Given the complex nature of the case and the ongoing investigations into the recruitment scam, Bhadra’s prolonged legal battles continue, with the Calcutta High Court maintaining a close watch on his health and confinement conditions. Despite his repeated requests for a relaxation of conditions, the court has remained firm on its stance, focusing on ensuring that justice is not compromised while accommodating medical needs.

Gangster Chandan Mishra Shot Dead in Patna Hospital: Key Accused Traced to New Town, Kolkata; Five Arrested Amidst Security and Political Fallout

Baby Chakraborty | KalimNews | July 19, 2025 | Kolkata : In a dramatic and brazen display of organized criminal violence, gangster Chandan Mishra—an undertrial on parole—was shot dead inside the intensive care unit of Paras Hospital in Patna on the morning of July 17. The gunmen, identified as members of a rival gang, calmly entered the hospital without resistance, opened fire at close range, and exited without haste. The entire incident was caught on CCTV, footage of which has since gone viral on social media, prompting widespread shock, political uproar, and a joint interstate police crackdown.

Within 48 hours of the incident, the Bihar Police, in collaboration with the West Bengal Special Task Force (STF), arrested five individuals from New Town, a satellite township near Kolkata, in connection with the murder. The arrests were made early Saturday morning during a series of coordinated raids at a residential housing complex. According to officials, these five individuals were not the direct assailants but had been providing critical logistical support—including shelter and transport arrangements—to the gunmen who carried out the hospital killing. The arrested individuals were found in two separate flats and one location outside the housing complex. Mobile phones and other documents have been seized, and digital forensics is underway, including the examination of call records and messaging app data.

Police officials have stated that the main suspects managed to flee Kolkata shortly after the murder. Surveillance footage captured their white getaway vehicle traveling through the Basanti Highway and passing through the jurisdictions of three police stations: Anandapur, Kolkata Leather Complex, and Bhangar. The vehicle is believed to have facilitated their escape from West Bengal, and search operations are currently ongoing across multiple districts.

The assassination of Chandan Mishra, a resident of Bihar’s Buxar district and a convict in over two dozen criminal cases including twelve murders, raises serious concerns regarding custodial security and law enforcement. Mishra was lodged at Beur Jail in Patna and had been granted parole for medical reasons, during which time he was admitted to Paras Hospital. On July 17, five armed and unmasked individuals, allegedly led by Tauseef Badshah, entered the hospital’s ICU—bypassing all security protocols and police presence—and fatally shot Mishra. The attackers were seen in CCTV footage walking out of the hospital premises with alarming composure. Additional social media footage surfaced soon after, showing them celebrating outside the facility.

Authorities suspect that the murder was orchestrated from inside a Bihar jail. Sheru Singh, a known gangster and a former associate-turned-rival of Mishra, currently in custody in Purulia, West Bengal, has been questioned in connection with the case. According to police sources, Sheru disclosed during interrogation that the murder plan was conceived by a member of his own gang, currently imprisoned in Bihar. The investigation has since expanded to examine jail communications, internal networks, and potential complicity among custodial personnel.

The incident has provoked intense political reactions. RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav alleged that criminals are receiving protection from within the state machinery, questioning the law and order situation in Bihar. Independent MP Pappu Yadav went further, demanding the imposition of President’s Rule and alleging a breakdown of governance marked by caste-based violence and political shielding of criminal elements. Meanwhile, in West Bengal, BJP leader Jagannath Chatterjee voiced alarm at the increasing number of criminals seeking refuge in Kolkata and its adjoining areas. “Why did they flee Bihar and come to Bengal?” he asked, adding that Kolkata has effectively become a “safe corridor” for criminals fleeing from other states.

This is not the first time that New Town has featured prominently in high-profile criminal crackdowns. The township, with its modern infrastructure, transient population, and booming rental market, has increasingly been exploited by fugitives for anonymity and cover. In June 2021, two most-wanted gangsters from Punjab—Jaipal Singh Bhullar and Jaspreet Singh—were tracked and killed in a shootout at the Shapoorji Pallonji residential complex in New Town. They had been living under false identities and were wanted in over 50 cases across multiple states.

More recently, in July 2024, Majnu Ghazi, a notorious pirate from Bangladesh, was arrested from a flat in New Town where he had been hiding for nearly a year after entering India illegally. He was wanted for several armed robberies of fishermen in the Sundarbans. The arrest led to the capture of another Bangladeshi fugitive, Kamal Sheikh, following Ghazi’s interrogation. Both had been aided by a network that helped them obtain fake identities and settle in the area undetected.

The pattern is unmistakable and troubling: New Town’s rapid urbanization and its cosmopolitan, high-rise landscape are being co-opted by criminal networks as a preferred hideout zone. The arrests made this week in connection with Chandan Mishra’s murder once again highlight the urgent need for stricter tenant verification, inter-state intelligence coordination, and enhanced vigilance in high-density residential hubs.

As the investigation continues, the five arrested individuals from New Town will be presented before a local court in Kolkata, where Bihar Police are expected to seek their transit remand. Authorities are also focusing on uncovering the broader nexus of support that enabled the assailants to evade capture and cross state borders. Officials confirmed that leads from mobile tower locations played a key role in tracking the suspects to New Town.

Meanwhile, questions linger over how armed assailants could penetrate a private hospital’s ICU floor despite the presence of police personnel. SP Patna (Central), Diksha, acknowledged the lapse in security and confirmed that internal probes are underway to investigate potential complicity and systemic failures. “Investigators are certainly looking into how such a severe breach of protocol could take place in broad daylight,” she said.

The brazen nature of the attack, combined with the apparent ease with which the killers operated across state lines, has brought renewed focus on the need for more robust security mechanisms—not only within the prison and hospital systems, but also across inter-state law enforcement networks. As events unfold, both the criminal investigation and political pressure continue to intensify.

Charges Framed Against Former RG Kar Principal and Four Others in Multi-Crore Corruption Case; Trial Begins July 22

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, Kolkata, July 14, 2025 :  In a significant development in the long-pending financial corruption case involving RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, the Alipore CBI Court has formally framed charges against five individuals, including the former principal, Dr. Sandeep Ghosh. This marks a major milestone in the high-profile case that has sent ripples through the state’s healthcare and administrative circles.

The individuals named in the charge sheet are Dr. Sandeep Ghosh, Afsar Ali, Biplob Singh, Suman Hazra, and Ashish Pandey—all of whom are currently in judicial custody. Charges have been filed under several serious sections of the Indian Penal Code, including IPC 420 (cheating), IPC 409 (criminal breach of trust by a public servant), IPC 467 and 468 (forgery), as well as Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act. The court has scheduled the formal trial to begin on July 22.

According to the CBI chargesheet submitted to the court on November 29, 2024, the accused were involved in systematic embezzlement of government funds through rigged tender processes for over three years. The probe has revealed that tenders for purchasing medical equipment worth crores of rupees were awarded to select contractors believed to be close associates of the then principal, Dr. Sandeep Ghosh. These alleged malpractices were first brought to light by the then deputy superintendent of the hospital, whose written complaint triggered the central investigation.

The CBI arrested Dr. Ghosh first, followed in quick succession by Biplob Singh, Afsar Ali, Suman Hazra, and Ashish Pandey. The central agency claims to possess substantial evidence indicating the deliberate misuse of public funds and procedural violations within the hospital’s procurement system.

Apart from financial mismanagement, RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has also been under public scrutiny for a separate but equally disturbing case. On August 9, 2024, the hospital was rocked by the rape and murder of a young female doctor, whose body was discovered in the seminar hall on the fourth floor of the emergency department. Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer stationed at the hospital, was arrested and later convicted with a life sentence by a lower court.

Following that incident, the CBI also turned its attention toward Dr. Sandeep Ghosh and Abhijit Mondal, then Officer-in-Charge of Tala police station, for their alleged roles in tampering with and destroying evidence related to the crime. Though both were granted bail in the rape and murder case, Ghosh remains in jail custody on corruption charges.

These incidents have further exposed troubling gaps in the functioning of public healthcare institutions in the state, particularly in areas of accountability, procurement, and internal oversight. The RG Kar scandal, involving both financial and criminal misconduct, has become emblematic of the systemic vulnerabilities afflicting government-run medical facilities.

As the trial begins on July 22, observers expect the proceedings to potentially unveil deeper layers of corruption, misuse of authority, and administrative lapses. Both the verdict of the court and the upcoming steps taken by the CBI will be closely watched, as the case continues to raise urgent questions about governance and transparency in West Bengal’s healthcare system.

City College Professor Arrested After Obscene Social Media Attacks on Women; SFI–DYFI Detain Him in Public

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, Kolkata, July 13, 2025 :  Dr. Rajdeep Maiti, a mathematics professor at Kolkata’s City College and a known Trinamool supporter, was seized on Saturday by members of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) following his alleged campaign of posting vulgar, threatening comments toward female SFI leaders—including Meenakshi Mukherjee, Aishi Ghosh, and Dipshita Dhar—on Facebook and other platforms. Despite repeated complaints filed with upper-city and Howrah police, as well as cybercrime units, no action had been taken—prompting left-leaning student groups to intervene directly.

A viral video shows the SFI–DYFI members surrounding Dr. Maiti outside the college in the College Street area. One student declares, “We’re not doing anything—we’re just taking him to the police.” In the footage, a local woman asks, “Brother, should I beat him a bit?” prompting another voice to respond, “Yes, take off your shoes,” after which she delivers a few slaps to Dr. Maiti’s cheek. The group then escorted him to the Amherst Street police station and handed him over to authorities.

Following the incident, a DYFI leader stated that the professor’s repeated misogynistic actions had undermined his credibility as an educator, and that the administration’s silence forced the students to act. The police have since launched an investigation and may file charges under various sections of the Information Technology Act.

This episode has reignited broader concerns regarding the abuse of social media to harass women and the lack of institutional response to such behavior. Authorities and campus bodies are now expected to reassess handling of online threats against women.

Brother Killed in Family Feud, Wife Attempts Suicide; Shocking Incident Rocks Hooghly’s Goghat

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, July 11, 2025, Kolkata :  A tragic family dispute has resulted in the brutal killing of a young man and his wife’s desperate suicide attempt after learning of his death. The deeply disturbing incident took place in Harishchandrapur village, under the Raghubati area of Goghat in Hooghly district, West Bengal, sending shockwaves throughout the local community.

The deceased, 28-year-old Utpal Ghosh, reportedly became involved in a violent altercation with his elder brother, Chanchal Ghosh, on the night of Thursday, July 10. What began as a verbal argument between the two escalated rapidly into physical violence. Eyewitnesses allege that Chanchal Ghosh assaulted Utpal with such severity that the latter lost consciousness. Locals immediately intervened and rushed the critically injured Utpal to Arambagh Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

In a heartbreaking turn of events, Srabani Ghosh, the wife of the deceased, attempted to end her life after receiving the devastating news of her husband’s death. It is alleged that she tried to hang herself with a rope. However, vigilant neighbors noticed the attempt in time and rescued her. She was subsequently admitted to a hospital, where she is currently undergoing treatment.

Upon receiving reports of the incident, officers from Goghat Police Station swiftly reached both the hospital and the crime scene. The accused, Chanchal Ghosh, has been arrested and taken into custody for interrogation. Initial assessments by the police indicate that the incident likely stemmed from an ongoing family dispute.

Chanchal Ghosh is reported to be employed at the Arambagh Sub-Divisional Officer’s (SDO) office. The incident has left the family’s elderly father in a state of utter disbelief and grief. He is struggling to come to terms with the fact that his elder son has allegedly taken the life of his younger son. The local community, too, is reeling from the shock, as the incident has caused widespread alarm and sorrow.

Police investigations are ongoing, and further legal proceedings are expected as more details emerge. The case has brought renewed focus on the tragic consequences of unresolved family conflicts and the urgent.

Two More Arrested for Vandalizing Minister’s Car in Manteshwar; Total of Seven Arrested Amid Rising Factional Tensions

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, July 7, 2025 , Kolkata: In a rapidly developing case, two more individuals were arrested today in connection with the attack and vandalism of a vehicle belonging to Manteshwar Assembly constituency MLA and state minister Siddikulla Chowdhury. This brings the total number of arrests to seven, as the police continue their investigation into the incident that has sparked political tensions and raised questions about factional conflicts within the Trinamool Congress.

According to Minister Siddikulla Chowdhury, his party workers and supporters in his assembly constituency had been harassed over the past three days, culminating in the vandalism of his vehicles. The incident has now highlighted deeper rifts within the ruling Trinamool faction, with the minister directly pointing fingers at Ahmed Hossain Sheikh, the president of the Manteshwar Panchayat Samiti, accusing him of being involved in the attack. The minister’s accusations have sent shockwaves through local political circles, with both district and state politics becoming embroiled in the controversy.

The vandalism is believed to be part of the ongoing factional conflict within the party, and Minister Chowdhury has expressed his dissatisfaction with the handling of the situation by local police forces. He has openly criticized their role in the incident, questioning their ability to maintain order in the face of such escalating tensions.

The Monteshwar Police Station had previously arrested five individuals in connection with the vandalism, and today, two more individuals were taken into custody. The latest arrests include Al Haq Sheikh, a resident of Kanchan Danga, and Ali Hossain Mandal, also known as Gopal Mandal, from Tayyab Pur. Both were sent to Kalna court for further proceedings.

Despite these arrests, police sources have indicated that investigations are still ongoing, with the Monteshwar Police continuing to search for other individuals linked to the incident. The police are hopeful that additional arrests will soon be made as they piece together the full extent of the attack and its motivations.

The political unrest has only intensified in the region, with both local party workers and the broader public keeping a close eye on the investigation. Minister Chowdhury’s accusations against key party figures have added fuel to the fire, and it remains to be seen how this will impact the already fraught political landscape in Manteshwar and beyond.

Kasba Law College Reopens Amid Tension and Protests After 12 Days, Security Concerns Escalate

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, July 7, 2025, Kolkata:

Kasba Law College reopened today after a tense 12-day closure, with the atmosphere on campus thick with apprehension and suppressed panic. As the gates of the institution finally swung open, the mood was far from celebratory, and the name “Manojit” remained unspoken, casting a shadow over the entire proceedings. The college, which had been closed following a series of disturbing events, reopened under heavy police security, leaving everyone uncertain whether they were entering a place of learning or a fort under siege.

From the crack of dawn, the entire campus was cordoned off by a substantial police presence, with high-ranking officers standing guard both inside and outside the premises. The heavy-handed security was a result of the ongoing concerns for safety and the tensions surrounding the reopening. Vice Principal Naina Chatterjee arrived at 7 am, under immense pressure to resume operations, even as the college faced mounting scrutiny and public unrest.

The situation grew more tense as a team of senior police officers inspected the security arrangements multiple times, reviewing the guard rails and other measures to ensure that no untoward incidents occurred. DC SSD Bidisha Kalita made her appearance in front of the college, keeping a watchful eye over the proceedings as staff and professors began arriving one by one. The campus remained heavily secured, with a permanent security guard, Varun Mahali, stationed at the entrance to monitor access.

The unrest surrounding the reopening is connected to an unsettling incident involving a law student, Manojit, whose name became a flashpoint for the growing discontent. According to reports, Manojit’s father claimed that he and his family had come to the college for a brief 20-minute form-filling session, but had refused to leave their son alone, raising concerns over his safety and the institution’s handling of the situation.

Professor Somnath Mukherjee, who appeared in court as a representative for the college, assured the public that strict adherence to security guidelines would be followed moving forward. “The law student who sought help after being allegedly tortured by a lawyer has created an undesirable image for the institution, and we are committed to addressing these concerns,” said Professor Mukherjee. The professor emphasized that the college would not tolerate any form of harassment and would ensure the safety of all students.

However, despite the assurances, chaos erupted within moments of the college reAfter a tense closure lasting 12 days, South Calcutta Law College in Kasba reopened today under heavy police security. The atmosphere was one of apprehension and unease, as the gates of the institution opened to a subdued crowd of students, many accompanied by their parents, for the first time since the college had been shut down on June 29 following a disturbing incident.

The reopening comes in the wake of the alleged gang rape of a first-year student on campus, an event that had sent shockwaves through the institution and the surrounding community. As the college reopens, the name of the prime accused, Manojit Mishra, continues to loom large over the proceedings, although it remains unspoken in the charged air of the campus. Mishra, an alumnus and casual employee of the college, along with two senior students, all of whom are affiliated with the Trinamool Congress (TMC) students’ wing, was arrested following the incident, which occurred after hours on June 25.

On the first day back, Vice Principal Naina Chatterjee confirmed that only first-semester BA LLB students who had not yet completed their examination forms were required to attend. These students were instructed to come in to complete the necessary formalities. Approximately 100 students, many accompanied by concerned parents, arrived at the gates, which were reopened at 10 am.

The reopening was far from routine, with strict security measures in place to ensure that no further incidents would disrupt the fragile peace. Kolkata Police, led by senior officers, had taken charge of overseeing the campus, while private guards carefully checked the ID cards of everyone entering. In line with the college’s new security protocol, no student was allowed to remain on campus past 2 pm, a stark contrast to the previous routine, where the college would remain open until 4 pm on regular working days.

A teacher at the college explained the shift in timings, stating that the decision was made to ensure greater control and to prevent any untoward situations. “We have taken a conscious decision not to allow rogue elements like Manojit Mishra, the prime accused in the rape case, access to the campus. The entry of outsiders will also be strictly regulated,” the teacher said.

While the decision to reopen was made with the approval of the Kolkata Police, the situation remains fraught with tension. The students’ union room and the security guard’s room, both of which were central to the investigation into the assault, have been sealed by the police and are off-limits to students and staff. The authorities also reminded students to follow their usual class timetable starting from July 8, in hopes of returning to normalcy.

Despite assurances from both the police and college authorities, many guardians remained deeply concerned about the safety of their children. Sasanka Dhara, the father of a first-semester student, expressed his fears, stating, “I have decided to accompany my son every day he has to come here for exams until the situation normalizes. We are scared about our children’s safety.” Another guardian accompanying his daughter voiced similar concerns, questioning how the security system could be trusted when both the guards and the college management were under threat.

The allegations that have rocked the college community have not only raised serious questions about campus security but also about the institution’s ability to manage and safeguard its students. One parent remarked, “I refuse to believe that the top TMC leaders were unaware of the criminal activities taking place on the campus, including the gross misuse of the students’ union room. These miscreants were allowed to operate with impunity because they had the blessings of their political leaders.”

The law student, whose name has not been disclosed for privacy reasons, was allegedly gang-raped by Mishra and his accomplices after the college hours. The victim, deeply traumatized by the assault, and her family have been seeking justice, while the college administration has faced public and media scrutiny for its handling of the situation. Protests have erupted from both students and local residents, demanding action against the accused and questioning the college’s safety measures.

In a bid to reassure the public, Professor Somnath Mukherjee, who appeared in court as a representative of the college, promised that the institution would adhere to strict security guidelines moving forward. “The unfortunate incident involving the law student has created an undesirable image for the institution. We are committed to ensuring that such a situation never happens again, and that all students feel safe,” he said.

However, the unrest continued to escalate as protests grew louder throughout the day. Students and faculty voiced their concerns about the timing of Vice Principal Chatterjee’s arrival and departure, as well as the college administration’s handling of the crisis. These grievances led to further unrest, culminating in the Vice Principal being escorted out of the premises amid growing tension.

As the campus begins to reopen, the path to restoring normalcy remains uncertain. For many students, the events of the past two weeks have left an indelible mark on their trust in the institution’s ability to protect them. While the college administration and law enforcement agencies have promised enhanced security measures, the true challenge will be to rebuild the confidence of the student body and their families. Until then, the Kasba Law College remains in a state of suspended tension, with the future of the institution hanging in the balance.opening. Protests broke out around the vice principal, with students and staff disputing the timing of her arrival and departure that day, as well as raising concerns about the registrar’s handling of the situation. These grievances culminated in further unrest, leading to the vice principal being escorted out of the college amid rising tensions.

As the protests grew in intensity, the situation at Kasba Law College remains fragile, with many unsure about the future of the institution. The reopening, while necessary, has only highlighted deeper issues regarding security, student safety, and the overall administration of the college. For now, the tension continues to simmer, with the college community awaiting concrete measures to address these ongoing concerns.

Kasba Law College Reopens with Strict Guidelines After Days of Closure

Baby Chakraborty | KalimNews | July 5, 2025 | Kolkata :  Kasba Law College is set to reopen its doors from Monday after a prolonged closure that began last Wednesday, following growing concerns over campus unrest. The reopening, however, will come with several strict conditions in place to ensure the safety and security of students and staff.

Education Minister Bratya Basu had expressed his displeasure over the college’s indefinite closure, particularly as it came at a critical time when semester exams were approaching. The closure of the college had effectively stalled academic progress, with several students still waiting to fill up their first semester forms. Basu had called for immediate action to resolve the matter, which led to a swift intervention from the authorities.

The issue reached the Calcutta High Court on Thursday, where a decision was made that the college’s reopening would be determined by the authorities and the management committee. In a meeting with the committee members, it was decided that the college would reopen under certain conditions. A formal notification was issued, outlining the specific guidelines for students and faculty when they return to campus on Monday.

Key conditions for the reopening include restricted operational hours, with the college only running from 8 am to 2 pm. Students will have the opportunity to fill out first-semester forms between 10 am and 12 pm. The college authorities also specified that fourth, sixth, and eighth-semester students will be allowed to submit their project papers between Tuesday and Thursday, with each semester scheduled for a specific day. Fourth-semester students are to come on Tuesday, sixth-semester students on Wednesday, and eighth-semester students on Thursday, between 9 am and 12:30 pm.

A crucial security measure introduced in the guidelines is that no one will be allowed to enter the college campus without presenting a valid photo ID. Furthermore, students are required to inform the security guard at the gate about the reason for their visit. Unauthorized entry or vague explanations will not be tolerated.

The college’s management committee has also made arrangements for increased security presence on campus. Discussions are ongoing about which gate students will use for entry and exit, as well as whether certain facilities like the union room, guard room, and washrooms will be allowed to be used for other purposes. In the interim, the college has requested Kasba police to ensure adequate security until the situation stabilizes.

Adding to the security changes, the college has terminated its previous security agency and appointed Varun Mahali to oversee security operations in the interim. It is also anticipated that two additional security guards will be hired from a new agency to further bolster safety.

While the reopening signals a return to normalcy, the management committee has made it clear that the college will only function under close scrutiny, with safety protocols strictly enforced. The authorities are hopeful that these measures will help restore a conducive learning environment for the students, and prevent any further disruptions to academic activities.

Law Student Allegedly Raped on College Campus in Kolkata, Accused Linked to Political Party

Agencies, Kolkata, June 27, 2025 – A law student was allegedly assaulted and raped on the premises of South Calcutta Law College on Wednesday, June 25, in a harrowing incident that has triggered widespread outrage and political debate in West Bengal. The Kolkata Police arrested three individuals, including the main accused, a former student of the college, on the evening of June 26. The survivor filed a police complaint detailing the brutal ordeal, which lasted over three hours.

According to the police, the student had visited the campus for some official work in the late afternoon, and it was around 6:00 pm when the main accused, who was present for an event, first approached her. The man, identified as a former student of the college and a temporary employee at the institution, reportedly promised the victim a prominent position in the college union if she complied with his demands. He also spoke of a “loyalty test” she would have to undergo, though the exact nature of this test was not clarified.

The victim later alleged that the accused proposed marriage to her, to which she refused, citing her existing relationship. As she attempted to leave the campus, she was allegedly stopped by the accused and two accomplices. Manojit Mishra is the prime accused, while  Pramit Mukherjee and Zaib Ahmed are co accused, The trio then forcibly took her to a room, where she was sexually assaulted. A security guard, who was on duty at the time, reportedly heard the victim’s cries and came to her aid, but he too was beaten up by the accused. The vice-principal of the college later stated that the institution had only one sanctioned security guard at the time.

After the initial assault, the victim was moved to another room, where the main accused allegedly raped her while the other two men stood guard. Sources close to the police indicated that the crime was recorded by the perpetrators on video. In her complaint, the victim further alleged that the men struck her with a hockey stick and threatened to kill her boyfriend if she reported the incident to the authorities. The assault continued for approximately three hours, during which the victim was subjected to immense physical and emotional trauma.

The victim’s complaint also mentioned that the accused threatened to release the video of the assault if she contacted the police. However, despite the threats, the survivor managed to file a formal complaint with the Kasba police station.

In a swift response, the police apprehended the three accused on the evening of June 26. The main accused is reportedly a practising lawyer at Alipore Court, in addition to his temporary employment at the college. The police are continuing their investigation, and all three men will be produced in court.

The incident has taken a political turn, with opposition parties in Bengal using it as ammunition to criticize the ruling Trinamool Congress. The main accused’s alleged ties to the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), the student wing of the party, have raised serious concerns. The accused’s social media profiles show his involvement with the TMCP’s south Kolkata unit since 2020, and several images on his profile feature him with senior Trinamool leaders.

Opposition leaders, including BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari, have condemned the incident, pointing to the alleged criminalisation of politics in Bengal since the Trinamool Congress assumed power in 2011. “This is not just a horrendous crime, it is a glaring example of the criminalisation within the Trinamool Congress,” Adhikari said, referring to the alleged misuse of power by student leaders associated with the ruling party.

The Congress also voiced strong criticism, with the state Congress president, Shubhankar Sarkar, accusing the Trinamool government of not taking sufficient action against its leaders involved in criminal activities. “The state government did not learn any lessons from past incidents,” Sarkar said, referencing a previous scandal at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. He further claimed that the state’s failure to act had emboldened criminals and anti-social elements in the state.

The CPI(M) joined the chorus of criticism, with Satarup Ghosh blaming the Trinamool Congress’s refusal to hold college union elections for creating a breeding ground for criminal activity on campuses. “College unions have been occupied by criminals like the accused in the Kasba case,” Ghosh said.

In response to the allegations, Trinamool MLA Ashok Deb, who is also the president of the college’s governing body, expressed his intention to take “strongest action” against those responsible. He added that the matter would be handled by the courts.

Meanwhile, the National Commission for Women (NCW) has called for a report on the case from the Kolkata Police Commissioner within three days. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities vowing to ensure justice for the victim.

Tragic Murder in Maharashtra: Newlywed Woman Allegedly Kills Husband After Strained Relationship

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews,

Kolkata, June 15, 2025  : The nation is still reeling from a shocking series of murders that have dominated headlines, and another chilling case has now emerged from Singli district in Maharashtra. A newlywed woman is accused of brutally murdering her husband just 15 days after their marriage. The victim, identified as 53-year-old Anil Lokhande, was allegedly hacked to death by his 27-year-old wife, Radhika, using an axe.

Anil Lokhande, who had previously lost his first wife to cancer, had recently married Radhika, and the couple seemed to start their new life full of hope. However, what appeared to be a fresh beginning quickly turned into tragedy. Police investigations have revealed that Anil began pressuring Radhika for physical relations almost immediately after their marriage, a demand that reportedly frustrated and upset her. The significant age difference between the two, with Anil being nearly twice Radhika’s age, further strained their relationship.
According to the police, the couple got married on May 23 in Maharashtra’s Sangli district.
On Tuesday night, the two fought aggressively, following which the victim, Anil Lokhande, went to sleep around midnight.
In a fit of rage, the woman, Radhika Lokhande, picked up an axe and hit her husband on the head, officials said. He died on the spot.
Minutes later, Radhika called her cousin and informed about the crime she committed.

Radhika, feeling increasingly uncomfortable and distressed by her husband’s repeated requests, reached a breaking point. On the night of Wednesday, June 13, she allegedly took an axe while Anil was asleep beside her and struck him multiple times. The assault was so brutal that Anil died on the spot.

The neighbors alerted the authorities early the next morning after they heard screams, and police officers swiftly arrived at the scene. Upon investigation, they arrested Radhika and initiated questioning. A case has been filed against her under several sections of the Indian Penal Code.

The police arrested Radhika on Wednesday and sent her to a two-day police custody, officials said. A case has been registered against her under Section 103 (1) of the BNS (murder).

Preliminary investigation indicates family discord to be the reason behind the murder.

However, officials are conducting further investigation, they said. This disturbing incident has sparked widespread discussions on various issues, including the psychological impact of marital pressures, the significance of mutual consent, and the importance of mental health in intimate relationships. Many are questioning the extreme violence exhibited and the underlying causes that led to such a horrific act. The case has stirred a broader con
