Eight Miscreants Arrested in West Bengal for Robbery, Firearms and Vehicles Seized

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, December 4, 2024 Hooghly :  In a major breakthrough, eight criminals from Jharkhand were arrested in West Bengal’s Hooghly district on Monday night, following a joint operation by local police and the Special Task Force (STF). The police recovered firearms, ammunition, two vehicles, and various robbery tools from the suspects, who had reportedly gathered in the Janai Chikrand area of Chanditala with the intent to commit a robbery.

The operation unfolded after the STF received a tip-off regarding the presence of a group of armed miscreants in the area. Acting on this information, the Chanditala police, in collaboration with the STF, swiftly conducted a raid. The police apprehended the suspects, who were found in possession of three pistols, 15 rounds of ammunition, and several vehicle number plates, some of which were linked to Jharkhand.

During a press conference at the Superintendent of Police (Rural) office in Hooghly, Superintendent of Police Kamnashis Sen confirmed that the arrested individuals were planning to carry out a robbery. “The criminals had gathered with the specific purpose of committing a robbery. The arrested suspects include Sajjad Alam (28), Bikki Gaur Thakur (28), Shahid Ali (36), and Sagar Prasad (36), all of whom are from Jharkhand. In addition, Sanatan Garai (33), Kajal Bauri (37), Alam Ansari (40), and Raju Chowdhury (40), all residents of Purulia, were arrested. The police seized two 7mm pistols, a pipe gun, a magazine, two vehicles—a Bolero car and a motorcycle, both with Jharkhand number plates—along with iron rods, lock-breaking tools, and other materials used for criminal activities.”

The police also found several items typically associated with robberies, including bhojali (a traditional weapon) and lock-breaking devices. Authorities have registered a case against the suspects under various sections, including the Arms Act, and they will be interrogated in police custody. The investigation will focus on uncovering the group’s past criminal activities and connections.

“The criminals are suspected to have been involved in several robberies along the border areas of Jharkhand and Bengal. They are part of a larger criminal syndicate that operates in these regions,” Superintendent Sen added. He assured the public that the police would investigate the extent of the group’s criminal activities and any possible linkages to larger, organized crime networks.

The successful operation highlights the growing collaboration between local police and the STF in tackling cross-border crime in West Bengal, especially in areas that have witnessed an increase in criminal activity in recent months.

Authorities have vowed to continue their efforts to dismantle such criminal networks, which often operate in the border areas, and have urged the public to remain vigilant. Further investigation is ongoing to uncover any additional crimes the group may have committed in the past.

BSF Seizes 18 Gold Biscuits in Separate Operations Along Indo-Bangladesh Border, Smuggler Arrested

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, December 3, 2024, North 24 Parganas : Vigilant jawans of the Border Security Force (BSF) South Bengal Frontier have successfully seized 18 gold biscuits during separate operations along the Indo-Bangladesh border in North 24 Parganas and Malda districts of West Bengal. The total weight of the recovered gold is 2.1 kg, with an estimated market value of Rs 1.62 crore.

The first operation took place near the Tarali-1 border post, where BSF personnel from the 143rd Battalion apprehended a smuggler attempting to cross into India with six gold biscuits hidden in the fuel tank of his motorcycle. Acting on specific intelligence regarding gold smuggling, the jawans increased surveillance at the Hakimpur checkpoint. At around 4:30 pm, they intercepted the suspicious motorcyclist, and a thorough search revealed the hidden gold. The arrested smuggler, during initial interrogation, revealed that he had received the gold from an unknown individual in Bangladesh and was instructed to deliver it to another smuggler in Bithari for a promised payment of Rs 1200. However, he was stopped before the transfer could take place.

In a second operation later the same day, BSF jawans from the 115th Battalion at the Boyraghat Border Outpost in Malda conducted a search at Boltala Ghat based on similar intelligence. A suspicious motorcyclist was seen approaching the area, but upon noticing the BSF personnel, the individual abandoned the motorcycle and fled the scene. Upon inspecting the motorcycle, the BSF team found 12 gold biscuits cleverly concealed inside the bike’s self-start mechanism.

The smuggler arrested in North 24 Parganas, along with the six gold biscuits, has been handed over to the Customs Department in Tentulia for further investigation. Similarly, the 12 gold biscuits recovered in Malda have been transferred to the Customs Department in Jangipur for continued inquiry.

The BSF continues to ramp up efforts along the Indo-Bangladesh border to curb the smuggling of contraband, including gold, and remains vigilant in securing the border area.

Civic Volunteer Accused of Sexual Assault and Extortion in Murshidabad

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, December 3, 2024, Murshidabad : A civic volunteer attached to Domkal police station has been accused of rape, blackmail, and extortion, sending shockwaves through the community. Abdul Salam, the accused, allegedly coerced a housewife into repeated sexual encounters under the pretext of marriage and reportedly filmed these incidents without her consent.

The victim has claimed that Salam used the video recordings to blackmail her, threatening to release the explicit footage if she refused to comply with his demands. According to the complaint, Salam initiated contact with the housewife through phone conversations and deceptive promises, which eventually led to him visiting her home in her husband’s absence. The victim alleges that Salam stole ₹90,000 in cash and gold jewelry during the encounters, further exploiting her vulnerability.

The situation in Domkal has grown increasingly tense as residents express outrage over the allegations. The housewife’s complaint, filed at Domkal police station, accuses Salam of multiple sexual assaults and extortion. The police have charged him under relevant sections, including those addressing sexual assault and blackmail.

The victim stated that Salam manipulated her with claims of wealth and power and later threatened her with the release of compromising material. These threats reportedly continued even as the victim’s household became aware of the situation, escalating domestic strife.

As investigations unfold, questions about accountability and the misuse of authority by civic volunteers have taken center stage. Local residents are calling for a thorough investigation and strict action to ensure justice for the victim. Meanwhile, the police department has refrained from making any official statements, citing the ongoing investigation.

The incident has sparked widespread discussions about the need for stricter oversight of civic volunteers and their conduct, highlighting the vulnerability of citizens in such cases of abuse of power.

Ayan Shil Granted Conditional Bail in Recruitment Corruption Case, Remains in Custody Due to CBI Charges

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, December 2, 2024, Hooghly :  Ayan Shil, a prominent businessman and promoter from Hooghly, has been granted conditional bail in the high-profile recruitment corruption case that has shaken West Bengal. The bail was granted by Justice Shuvra Ghosh of the Calcutta High Court, who set a personal bond of Rs 10 lakh for Shil’s release. However, his release will be subject to several strict conditions, and he remains in jail due to separate charges in a related investigation.

Shil, who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in March 2023, is closely linked to Shantanu Banerjee, the expelled Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and one of the key accused in the corruption scandal. Before his arrest, the ED had conducted a search operation at Shil’s residence, office, and flat, uncovering crucial documents related to the scam, including Xerox copies of multiple OMR sheets used in fraudulent recruitment activities.

While Shil has been granted bail in the ED case, the conditions imposed by the Calcutta High Court include the surrender of his passport, restrictions on changing his mobile number, and a requirement to fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation. Despite these developments, Shil’s release from custody will not be immediate, as he faces additional charges in a separate case being handled by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The CBI is probing Shil’s involvement in the primary recruitment corruption case, and it is in connection with these charges that he will remain behind bars for the time being. Shil is said to have strong links to other accused individuals in the case, including Shantanu Banerjee, Santu Gangopadhyay, and Kuntal Ghosh—figures with deep political and administrative ties.

While Shil’s bail in the ED case marks a significant development, several other individuals connected to the corruption scandal, including Manik Bhattacharya, Arpita Mukherjee, and Kuntal Ghosh, have also been granted bail in recent weeks. Notably, former state minister Partha Chatterjee, another key figure in the case, has not yet been granted bail, and his legal proceedings are ongoing.

The case has attracted widespread attention due to its implications for public recruitment processes in the state and the involvement of high-profile political figures. As the investigation continues, the role of various individuals in the recruitment scam is under scrutiny, with more developments expected in the coming weeks.

For now, Shil’s legal team will have to navigate the complexities of the CBI case while complying with the conditions of his bail, which will determine his fate in the months ahead.

Assistant Headmaster Arrested for Embezzlement of 9 Lakh Rupees in Dinhata; Claims of Frame-up Persist

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, December 1, 2024, Dinhata : Ashok Roy, the assistant headmaster of Bamanhat High School in Dinhata, was arrested on charges of embezzling 9 lakh rupees after allegedly discovering a lost bag containing the cash. The incident unfolded when a businessman accidentally left the bag in front of a shop near Madanmohan Bari. Upon realizing the mistake, the businessman promptly notified the police about the missing money.

In the course of the investigation, law enforcement officials reviewed CCTV footage from the shop where the bag was found. The footage showed Roy, accompanied by a local shopkeeper, picking up the bag and leaving the scene. This discovery led the police to summon both Roy and the shopkeeper for questioning.

Upon further investigation, the police traced the bag to Roy’s home, where it was recovered in full, containing the 9 lakh rupees. The bag was then returned to its rightful owner. Subsequently, the police filed a case against Roy and the shopkeeper under relevant sections pertaining to theft and embezzlement. Both individuals were arrested and taken into custody.

Roy, in his defense, claimed that he had found the bag and intended to return it to its rightful owner. He stated that after keeping it temporarily at home, he eventually handed it over to the police. However, in light of the recovered evidence, the police proceeded with the charges, and legal proceedings are now underway. The case is set to be heard in court, with both the assistant headmaster and the shopkeeper scheduled to appear before the judiciary.

While the authorities have confirmed that the investigation is proceeding according to legal protocols, Roy has steadfastly denied the accusations, insisting that the entire narrative of money theft was fabricated to frame him. He maintains that he had no intention to misappropriate the funds and that his actions were solely motivated by a desire to return the lost money.

The Dinhata Police have reassured the public that all legal measures are being taken to ensure justice is served, as the investigation continues.

Seven Convicted in Chinsurah Murder Case Transferred Under Heavy Security Following Death Sentences

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, December 1, 2024, Hooghly:

In a high-security operation today, seven criminals, including the notorious Vishal Das, were moved from Hooghly Jail to Burdwan Jail following their conviction in the high-profile Chinsurah murder case. On Thursday, the fast-track court of Chinsurah sentenced Vishal Das and his six accomplices to death for their involvement in the brutal murder of local youth Bishnu Mal.

The chilling crime, which took place four years ago, was motivated by a love triangle. Bishnu Mal, a young man from Chinsurah, was tragically murdered, sparking an extensive investigation that eventually led to the arrest of the seven accused, including Vishal Das.

Following the sentencing, the Chinsurah Court’s ruling was hailed as a landmark decision. Chandannagar Police Commissioner Amit P. Javalgi, speaking at a press conference at the Chinsurah Police Lines, described the verdict as “historic” and praised the efforts of the investigative team. “This conviction is a result of diligent investigation, and we are proud of the work done by investigating officer Tamal Mohanty and his team,” Javalgi said. “Everyone involved in the investigation will be rewarded for their commitment.”

As per jail sources, the seven convicted criminals were transferred from the Hooghly District Correctional Facility to the Burdwan Central Correctional Facility, which is known for its enhanced security measures. This transfer, they explained, was made to ensure greater safety due to the high-profile nature of the case and the severity of the sentences.

The transfer of the convicts to a higher-security facility signals the gravity of the case and the government’s commitment to ensuring that justice is upheld. The death sentence has also sparked discussions about the effectiveness of the judicial system in tackling violent crimes.

Chinsurah Murder Case: Court Sentences 7 to Death in Gruesome Killing of Toto Driver Bishnu Mal

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, November 28, 2024, Hooghly :  In a historic and chilling verdict, the Chinsurah District Headquarters Court has sentenced seven individuals to death and another to seven years in prison for the brutal murder of Bishnu Mal, a young Toto driver from Raibede, Chinsurah. This verdict brings closure to a harrowing case that has haunted the community for four years.

The case revolved around the gruesome killing and dismemberment of Bishnu Mal, who was abducted on October 11, 2020, by a gang led by notorious criminal Vishal Das. Bishnu’s body was cut into six pieces, which were later discovered in plastic bags at various locations. This heinous crime not only shocked Chinsurah but also drew attention to the growing menace of gang violence in the region.
Details of the Crime
According to police investigations, Bishnu Mal was abducted from in front of his house by Vishal Das and his gang. He was taken to a house in the Chapdani area, where he was murdered and his body was dismembered.

The police launched an intensive investigation and tracked Vishal Das to Jibantala in South 24 Parganas, where he was apprehended after a dramatic shootout that left three police officers injured. Vishal’s arrest eventually led to the capture of eight other gang members implicated in the crime.

The Trial and Sentencing
The four-year-long trial culminated in a landmark judgment on November 28, 2024. The court convicted nine individuals of Bishnu Mal’s murder on November 25 and reserved the sentencing for today. The verdict is as follows:

Death Penalty:

Vishal Das (gang leader), Rajkumar Pramanik, Ratan Bepari, Vinod Das, Biplob Biswas, Ramakrishna Mandal, Rathin Singh.

Seven-Year Imprisonment:

Mantu Ghosh.

Another accused, Sheikh Mintu, had turned state witness and was released earlier.
The Criminal History of Vishal Das
Vishal Das, described as one of the most dangerous criminals in Hooghly, has a long history of murder, extortion, and racketeering. His rise in the criminal world began years ago when he allegedly orchestrated the killing of Toton Biswas’s grandfather, establishing his dominance in the region. Vishal’s notoriety grew further after a gang war in the Balagarh area, where he and others were severely injured in a shootout.

After serving time in jail for his involvement in various crimes, Vishal returned to the criminal underworld, continuing his reign of terror until his arrest for Bishnu Mal’s murder.

A Victory for Justice
This verdict is being hailed as a major win for justice in Hooghly, as it not only punishes those responsible for Bishnu Mal’s murder but also sends a strong message against organized crime. Family members of the victim expressed relief and gratitude, with Bishnu’s mother stating, “We waited for years for this day. We hope no family has to endure what we went through.”
Community and Legal Response
The brutal nature of the crime has sparked debates about law enforcement’s role in preventing such atrocities. Legal experts and activists are calling for stricter measures to dismantle criminal networks in the state. The court’s decision has been widely praised for its swiftness and decisiveness in delivering justice in a high-profile case.
Conclusion
The sentencing marks the end of a dark chapter in Chinsurah’s history while underlining the need for vigilance against the growing threat of gang violence. For the people of Hooghly, it is both a moment of justice and a stark reminder of the dangers that unchecked criminality can bring.

Arpita Mukherjee Granted Bail in School Jobs Scam Case, Restrictions Imposed on Her Movements

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, Kolkata, Nov 25, 2024: Arpita Mukherjee, a close associate of former West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee, was granted bail on Monday by a special court of the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Mukherjee, who had been in judicial remand since her arrest in July 2022, was granted bail on a bond of Rs 5 lakh, with conditions that she submit her passport and refrain from leaving Kolkata without court permission. This ruling has sparked considerable discussion, given the high-profile nature of the case involving corruption in the state’s education recruitment process.

Arpita Mukherjee’s arrest in July 2022 came as part of the ED’s investigation into the school jobs scam, in which both Mukherjee and Partha Chatterjee were accused of involvement in illegal appointments to government-sponsored and aided schools in West Bengal. The ED claims to have recovered a substantial amount of cash—Rs 49.80 crore—along with gold, jewelry, and property documents linked to Mukherjee. The investigation also revealed documents showing joint holdings in a company, which the ED alleges were part of the illegal money trail.

While Mukherjee’s bail was granted, it came with significant restrictions. She is required to present a bond of Rs 5 lakh with local sureties, and her movements are confined to Kolkata unless granted leave by the court. Additionally, she must appear before the court daily during hearings related to the school jobs scam case.

The trial of the accused has yet to begin, as argued by Mukherjee’s lawyers during the bail hearing. Despite this, the court found sufficient grounds to grant her bail, which has sparked mixed reactions in the public and political circles. Mukherjee, who is closely linked to Chatterjee, has consistently denied any wrongdoing.

The case has been marred by a complex web of allegations, with Mukherjee claiming that she had no knowledge of the illegal activities and was merely a victim of circumstances. Her defense argued that the money and properties found in her possession did not prove her direct involvement in the corruption, as she had never been the primary owner of the assets.

The timing of the bail also coincides with a personal tragedy. On Wednesday, Mukherjee’s mother, Minatidevi, a close friend of Partha Chatterjee, passed away while she was in custody. On Thursday, Mukherjee was granted a two-day parole by the Calcutta High Court to attend the funeral, and she was allowed to return home on the same day. She expressed her grief publicly, stating that if she had been informed earlier about her mother’s illness, she could have arranged for better medical care.

Meanwhile, Partha Chatterjee, who was also arrested on July 23, 2022, remains in custody, and his bail has not yet been granted. In the past, Chatterjee’s legal team has distanced him from Mukherjee, with his lawyer arguing that he had no knowledge of the illegal financial dealings that led to the charges against both of them.

The ongoing case has drawn significant public attention, with many questioning the role of high-ranking officials in the alleged corruption. As the legal proceedings unfold, all eyes will remain on the court’s decisions and whether more individuals in the state’s political establishment will face charges.

Five-Year-Old Girl Raped and Murdered in Hooghly: Accused Arrested Amid Outrage

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, November 25, 2024, Hooghly: A horrifying crime has shaken the residents of Chopa village in Gurap, Hooghly. A five-year-old girl was allegedly raped and murdered on Sunday evening, with her bloodied body discovered in a neighbor’s house. The incident has left the community in shock and sparked widespread demands for justice.

The child’s father recounted that he had stepped out briefly to purchase meat at her request. Upon returning home, he found her missing. Hours of searching led to the gruesome discovery in a neighbor’s house. The girl was rushed to Dhaniakhali hospital but was pronounced dead by doctors.

The Gurap police acted swiftly after the father lodged a formal complaint. A case of rape and murder was registered, and the accused neighbor was arrested on Sunday night. Considering the gravity of the case, the investigation has been entrusted to the Circle Inspector of Dhaniakhali.

Hooghly District Superintendent of Police Kamnashis Sen, along with Additional Superintendent of Police Kalyan Sarkar and senior officers, visited the crime scene to assess the situation. A special investigative team has been constituted to ensure a thorough and expedited probe.

The victim’s body was sent to Chunchura District Sadar Hospital on Monday morning for an autopsy. Meanwhile, the police have announced their intention to present the accused in Chunchura District Court, seeking remand for further interrogation.

The accused neighbor has a history of troubling behavior, according to locals. Allegedly married twice, he was known to shuttle between Chopa and his in-laws’ residence in Baichi. Villagers also accused him of theft and previous acts of cruelty, including mistreatment of animals. The victim’s father claimed that, despite these warning signs, no one had imagined he could commit such a heinous crime.

Outraged villagers and the minor’s family are demanding the severest punishment for the accused. “This is unforgivable. We demand the harshest penalty to ensure such crimes never happen again,” a local resident declared.

As the investigation unfolds, the region grieves the loss of an innocent life, and the call for justice grows louder. The incident has heightened concerns about child safety in rural areas.

This chilling case serves as a grim reminder of the urgent need for stronger preventive measures and accountability in crimes against children. While the investigation continues, the victim’s family and the entire community await justice.

As public pressure mounts, law enforcement has assured a fair and swift investigation. Senior officers, while ensuring transparency, have urged the community to trust the investigation process. The incident has also drawn attention to the need for heightened vigilance and robust systems to safeguard children, particularly in vulnerable areas.

Violence Erupts at Vidyasagar Hospital in Behala Over Patient’s Death, 22 Arrested

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, November 23, 2024, Kolkata :

A tragic and chaotic incident unfolded at Vidyasagar Hospital in Behala late Friday night, following the death of a patient who had suffered a heart attack. What started as a desperate attempt by the hospital staff to save the life of Sheikh Mehmud Alam quickly escalated into a violent mob attack that saw over 150 people storm the hospital’s emergency department, vandalizing property, assaulting medical staff, and causing panic among patients.

According to hospital sources, Sheikh Mehmud Alam, a resident of Thakur Pukur, was brought to Vidyasagar Hospital at around 8:00 pm on Friday, suffering from a severe heart attack. Despite receiving immediate medical attention, including two rounds of CPR, Alam’s condition deteriorated. At 8:50 pm, he was declared dead.

As word of Alam’s death spread, his family and a group of local residents gathered at the hospital, alleging medical negligence and demanding access to the hospital’s medical records. However, hospital authorities refused to release any documents without court approval, as per standard procedure. This refusal sparked anger among the relatives and a mob of approximately 150 people, who, by 10:00 pm, had entered the hospital’s emergency department.

The situation quickly turned violent. The rioters, accusing the hospital staff of negligence, caused widespread damage to hospital property, including medicine and equipment. In a disturbing turn of events, the nursing staff was physically assaulted, and three nurses were injured in the attack. Sources confirmed that the rioters had destroyed a significant amount of medical supplies, including vital injections and medicines.

In the midst of the chaos, hospital staff were forced to relocate patients to safer areas. However, the violence did not stop there. During the commotion, an 85-year-old patient named Shanti Sinha, who was receiving treatment at the hospital, reportedly died. It is unclear whether her death was directly linked to the incident, but the disruption certainly exacerbated the situation, causing additional distress to patients and staff. Some patients, in a state of panic, fled from their beds, further compounding the emergency response.

Police Intervention and Arrests

The situation only calmed when a large police force from Parnasree Police Station was deployed to control the mob and restore order. The police arrested 22 individuals involved in the violence, charging them with vandalism, assault, and other offenses related to the disturbance. Authorities have assured the public that an investigation is underway to determine the full extent of the incident and to hold those responsible accountable.

In a statement, the superintendent of Vidyasagar Hospital condemned the attack, noting that the rioters had not only caused physical damage but also put the lives of other patients at risk by disrupting medical services. “The rioters have destroyed a lot of medication and injections. This will impact the hospital’s ability to provide immediate care to other patients in need,” the superintendent said.

This incident underscores the growing tension between healthcare providers and the public in certain areas of West Bengal. While healthcare workers continue to be under immense pressure to provide care, especially in emergency situations, accusations of negligence and the increasing number of violent protests by agitated relatives of patients are raising alarms. The incident at Vidyasagar Hospital also highlights the broader issue of how the public perceives the quality of medical care in government hospitals and the tragic consequences that often arise when patients do not survive their medical crises.

The police investigation is ongoing, with officers reviewing CCTV footage and gathering witness accounts. Initial reports suggest that the violence was instigated by the family members of the deceased patient, but further inquiries will seek to establish the full circumstances surrounding the riot. Hospital authorities have also promised to cooperate with law enforcement in identifying those responsible for the destruction and the assault on medical staff.

The incident has left many questions unanswered. Was there a failure in the hospital’s emergency care? Could the situation have been handled differently? And, most importantly, how can hospitals and law enforcement work together to prevent such violence in the future?

As authorities work to piece together the facts, Vidyasagar Hospital and its staff are left grappling with the aftermath of an incident that has shaken the local community and drawn attention to the challenges faced by medical institutions in the region. The tragedy of Sheikh Mehmud Alam’s death has now been overshadowed by the violence that followed, and the incident will likely serve as a stark reminder of the need for greater accountability, better communication, and a more supportive environment for both healthcare workers and patients alike.

10 Maoists Killed in Chhattisgarh’s Sukma District in Major Security Forces Operation

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, November 22, 2024,

Sukma, Chhattisgarh : In a major breakthrough in the ongoing fight against Maoist insurgents, at least 10 Maoists were killed in a well-coordinated operation by security forces in the Bandarpadar forest area of Sukma district, Chhattisgarh. A significant haul of firearms, including AK-47 rifles, INSAS rifles, and other weapons, was recovered from the site.

The operation, which took place on Friday morning, was based on intelligence gathered from secret sources. Upon receiving the tip-off, the security forces swiftly launched an offensive in the dense Bandarpadar forest, a known Maoist stronghold. As the security personnel surrounded the area, they were met with heavy gunfire from the Maoists, prompting an intense firefight.

Bastar Inspector General (IG) P. Sundarraj confirmed that 10 Maoist bodies had been recovered so far, and search operations are still underway in the region. “A large number of firearms, including AK-47 and INSAS rifles, have been recovered from the Maoists,” Sundarraj said, emphasizing the success of the operation. He also stated that the security forces were continuing to comb the area to ensure no further Maoists were present and to recover any additional weapons or explosives.

This successful operation marks a significant achievement in the ongoing efforts of the Indian government to dismantle the Maoist insurgency, particularly in the conflict-ridden Bastar region. The district of Sukma, which has long been a hotbed of Maoist activity, has seen numerous clashes between security forces and insurgents in the past. The recent operation is seen as a major blow to the Maoist network operating in the region.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who has set a target of eradicating Maoism from India by 2026, hailed the operation as a step towards fulfilling this goal. In a recent statement, Shah declared, “I believe the fight against Maoism is in its final stages. The time for the final attack has come, and we will eliminate Maoism from the country by March 2026.”

Recent statistics reflect the intensity of the ongoing campaign against the Maoists. According to the latest figures, 257 Maoists have been killed since January of this year alone. Additionally, 861 Maoists have been arrested, while 789 have surrendered to the authorities. These numbers highlight the continued pressure on the insurgents, who have been gradually losing ground in their strongholds.

The security forces, including the CRPF, local police, and paramilitary forces, have been making steady progress in their counter-insurgency operations, often facing violent resistance from Maoist groups. The central government has ramped up its efforts in recent years, with increased deployment of forces and better coordination between state and central agencies.

While the operation in Sukma marks a significant victory, authorities remain vigilant, as Maoist groups continue to operate in the dense forests of central India. Despite the setbacks, the insurgents are believed to have a deep-rooted presence in several tribal areas, where they often exploit local grievances to gain support.

As the security forces continue their operations, the government remains determined to bring an end to Maoist insurgency in the country, with Amit Shah reiterating his commitment to achieving a Maoist-free India by 2026. However, experts suggest that while progress has been made, it will require sustained efforts and cooperation from local communities to fully eradicate the threat posed by these extremist groups.

ED-Accused Arpita’s Mother Passes Away, Court Grants Five-Day Parole for Funeral Rites

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, November 21, 2024, Kolkata: Arpita Mukherjee, a key figure in the high-profile recruitment corruption case involving former West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee, has been granted five-day parole by a special court following the tragic news of her mother’s death. Arpita, who has been incarcerated since her arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in July 2022, was informed of her mother’s passing on Wednesday, causing her to break down in tears. Sources confirm that her mother had been ill for some time prior to her death.

Arpita was arrested after the ED conducted raids on several of her properties, uncovering a massive Rs 21.90 crore in cash and significant amounts of gold and jewelry at her Tollygunge residence. Further investigations revealed an additional Rs 28 crore in cash, along with more valuables, from her Belgharia house, where her mother resided. Since then, Arpita has remained in judicial custody, facing charges related to the multi-crore school recruitment scam.

In light of her mother’s death, Arpita applied for parole to attend the funeral and complete the necessary post-funeral rituals. On Thursday, the special court granted her request, marking her first release from jail since her arrest. This brief release comes amidst the ongoing legal proceedings surrounding the recruitment scam, which continues to involve Arpita and her former mentor, Partha Chatterjee.

The case, widely referred to as the “cash-for-jobs” scam, has garnered significant attention. In a previous hearing in March 2023, the ED revealed that Arpita Mukherjee and Partha Chatterjee shared a close relationship. It was disclosed in the Calcutta High Court that Chatterjee had even signed an undertaking to assume financial responsibility for a child Arpita wished to adopt, further highlighting the extent of their personal connection. The ED’s counsel presented this information in response to claims by Chatterjee’s defense that the financial assets found at Arpita’s properties were not his responsibility and that their relationship was akin to that of an “uncle and niece.”

As Arpita deals with her personal loss, the legal battles continue for both her and Partha Chatterjee. On Wednesday, the Calcutta High Court heard a bail petition from Partha Chatterjee in relation to charges filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the recruitment scam. The two-judge Division Bench was split, with Justice Arijit Bandyopadhyay favoring bail, while Justice Apurba Sinha Roy opposed it, citing concerns over possible attempts by the state administration to shield influential figures involved in the case. The matter has now been referred to a new Division Bench under the leadership of Chief Justice T.S. Sivagnanam.

Additionally, on Thursday, the Supreme Court adjourned the hearing of a similar bail petition filed by Chatterjee in connection with the ED’s investigation into the scam.

As Arpita takes a brief respite from her judicial custody to attend to her family’s mourning, the legal proceedings surrounding the recruitment corruption case remain ongoing, with both she and Partha Chatterjee facing serious charges that could have far-reaching consequences.

Calcutta High Court Discharges DOPD in PIL Against Ex-Kolkata Police Commissioner, Centre Submits Report on RG Kar Evidence Destruction

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, November 21, 2024, Kolkata : In a significant development on Thursday, the Calcutta High Court discharged the Department of Personnel and Training (DOPD) from a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) involving former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal. Goyal is accused of orchestrating the destruction of critical evidence in the RG Kar case. Alongside this ruling, the Centre submitted a report in the court outlining the procedural role it may play if the state fails to act on allegations involving Indian Police Service (IPS) officers.

The PIL filed against Goyal alleges that he abused his power to eliminate key information related to the victim’s incident in the RG Kar case, which has drawn public concern. The Division Bench, headed by the Chief Justice, has directed all parties to submit affidavits in response to the Centre’s report. The next hearing is scheduled for December 23.

In the report presented by the Centre, it was stated that the responsibility for addressing complaints against IPS officers falls primarily with the state. However, the Centre indicated that if the state fails to take action, a complaint can be escalated to the Union Home Ministry. If necessary, the Home Ministry could initiate a departmental inquiry into the matter.

The case continues to draw attention, with the next hearing set to address further developments regarding the destruction of evidence in a matter that has stirred public interest and raised questions about accountability within the police force.

Baby Charaborty with inputs from Agencies, KalimNews, November 16, 2024 : Hamas has urged U.S. President-elect Donald Trump to exert pressure on Israel to agree to a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. In a letter addressed to Trump, the militant group indicated that while it is willing to accept a ceasefire, it insists that Israel must honor any such agreement. The conflict, which has raged for over a year, has resulted in significant loss of life and suffering, particularly in Gaza, where Israeli military forces continue their aggressive operations.

Hamas, which has heavily attacked Israeli targets throughout the conflict, including kidnapping numerous Israelis, now calls for an immediate ceasefire. The group also demands that Israel withdraw its forces from Gaza and address humanitarian concerns, including the return of displaced individuals and the provision of humanitarian aid. In a statement to AFP, Hamas political bureau member Bassem Naim reiterated that Hamas is willing to accept any proposal that would lead to a lasting ceasefire and military withdrawal from Gaza, provided the terms are respected by Israel.

“We have appealed to the U.S. administration, and to President Trump, to put pressure on the Israeli government to stop its aggression,” Naim said. He added that Hamas’ key demands include securing a serious deal for prisoner exchanges and the entry of humanitarian aid into the besieged Gaza Strip.

The call from Hamas for international mediation comes after Qatar, which had previously played a role in facilitating talks, announced it was stepping down from its position as a mediator. The Qatari government expressed disappointment with both sides’ lack of seriousness in pursuing peace, urging both Hamas and Israel to take the situation more seriously.

Meanwhile, Israel continues to push forward with its military objectives in Gaza, despite widespread condemnation from various international organizations, including the United Nations and Human Rights Watch, which have condemned Israel’s actions as exhibiting “characteristics of genocide.” The conflict has led to severe destruction in Gaza and a humanitarian crisis.

On the broader Middle East front, Donald Trump, who repeatedly promised during his presidential campaign to broker peace in the region, has indicated his support for Israel. His administration has been a staunch ally of Israel, and he has vowed to ensure the country’s security. Recently, Trump announced that Marco Rubio would serve as the next U.S. Secretary of State, a move that many analysts believe signals a continuation of his administration’s pro-Israel stance.

Additionally, developments in Lebanon and its ongoing conflict with Hezbollah have added another layer of complexity to the regional situation. After months of escalating clashes between Israel and Hezbollah, there are signs that both sides may be closer to a ceasefire. Lebanon’s government has confirmed that it is reviewing a U.S. truce proposal that could pave the way for a 60-day ceasefire, during which Lebanon would reposition its military along its southern border with Israel. This potential deal has been welcomed by Iran, a key ally of Hezbollah, with Ali Larijani, an advisor to Iran’s supreme leader, affirming his country’s support for Lebanon’s efforts to achieve peace.

Despite these developments, Israel has vowed that there will be no pause in its military operations against Hezbollah. Israeli airstrikes in Damascus, Syria, have continued for the second consecutive day, hitting key locations in the capital, including the Mazzeh district, which houses several foreign embassies and international institutions. The strikes are part of Israel’s ongoing campaign against Iranian and Hezbollah targets in the region.

The complex web of conflicts across the Middle East, involving Israel, Hamas, Hezbollah, Iran, and Syria, continues to draw the attention of world powers, with ongoing diplomatic efforts attempting to bring about a lasting ceasefire and peace. However, as of now, no resolution appears imminent, and the region remains engulfed in violence, with many calling for greater international intervention to prevent further bloodshed and ensure the protection of civilians.

Plot to Kill Using Russian Chemicals”: Arjun Singh’s Explosive Claim Sparks Political Storm

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, 15 November 2024 : Former BJP MP Arjun Singh has ignited a political controversy with his startling claim of an alleged plot to assassinate him, Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, and others using chemicals sourced from Russia. Singh made these remarks yesterday before appearing at the CID office, sending shockwaves through the state’s political circles.

Adding weight to Singh’s allegations, BJP MP Shamik Bhattacharya today backed the former Barrackpore MP’s claim. When questioned about Singh’s statement, Bhattacharya remarked, “Arjun Singh is a seasoned politician. He has faced numerous threats, especially since joining the BJP. His words are based on specific facts and evidence. His claim cannot be dismissed outright.”
Arjun Singh alleged that a conspiracy involving imported chemicals was being hatched to target key political figures in West Bengal. His comments have intensified the ongoing tensions between the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the BJP, with Singh implying that his life has been under constant threat due to his political affiliations and outspokenness.
Singh, who switched from TMC to BJP, has been at the center of several political controversies and clashes. Since his defection, he has repeatedly claimed to be a target of politically motivated violence. Bhattacharya’s statement lends credibility to Singh’s assertion, suggesting that these threats are part of a broader scheme.
The TMC has yet to respond officially to these explosive claims. However, political analysts suggest that Singh’s statement could escalate tensions further in a state already marred by political violence.

With investigations ongoing and no official evidence presented so far, the allegations remain a subject of intense debate, with both parties likely to use the issue to their political advantage in the days to come.

NIA Makes First Arrest in Bhatpara Shooting Case; Political Tensions Soar

Baby Chakraborty,  KalimNews, North 24 Pargana,  15 November 2024: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has made its first arrest in connection with the shooting incident targeting Priyanku Pandey, a close associate of BJP leader Arjun Singh, in Bhatpara, North 24 Pargana. The arrest, made on Friday in Maheshtala, marks a significant development in the case that has heightened political tensions between the BJP and Trinamool Congress (TMC).

The attack occurred while Priyanku Pandey and another BJP leader, Ravi Singh, were traveling towards Kankinara. According to Arjun Singh, the assailant opened fire as their car paused on the road. Pandey, seated beside the driver, sustained injuries, and Singh, in the back seat, was also hurt. Singh claimed that a bullet struck the driver in the forehead, narrowly averting a fatal accident.

Singh described the incident as a “100 percent planned” assassination attempt.

Initially investigated by local authorities, the case was transferred to the NIA amid claims of political motivations and allegations of TMC involvement. The arrest on Friday is expected to shed light on the perpetrators and their motives.

The incident has sparked a war of words between the BJP and TMC. Jagaddal TMC MLA Somnath Shyam dismissed the allegations, accusing Arjun Singh of staging the attack. “Arjun himself orchestrated the shooting and bombing to malign TMC,” Shyam said, suggesting political theatrics at play.

Arjun Singh, however, vehemently rejected these claims, reiterating that the attack was a deliberate attempt to eliminate Pandey and Singh. “This was no accident; it was a calculated move to silence our voices,” he asserted.

Bhatpara, a politically volatile area with a history of clashes between TMC and BJP, has witnessed escalating tensions since the incident. The shooting has not only intensified the rivalry between the two parties but also raised concerns about law and order in the region.

With the NIA’s involvement, further arrests and revelations are expected. The agency’s investigation will likely explore links between the accused and political figures, aiming to uncover the larger conspiracy behind the attack.

As the case unfolds, it underscores the deepening political divide in West Bengal, where violence often intertwines with political rivalries. Both parties are now bracing for the impact of the NIA’s findings, which could have far-reaching implications for the region’s political landscape.

SIT formed to probe into tab fund diversion scam: Mamata

3 FIRs lodged, 11 held as state police suspect involvement of inter-state gangs

PTI, KOLKATA, NOV 15, 2024 : Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday said that her government has formed a Special Investigating Team (SIT) to probe into a fraud in which government funds sent to bank accounts of students for purchasing tabs or mobile phones were diverted elsewhere. Six people were arrested in this connection, Mamata said while speaking to journalists at the Bagdogra airport in the northern part of the state before flying back to Kolkata.

The government had transferred Rs 10,000 to the bank accounts of each higher secondary and Class 10 student of government schools to purchase a tablet or mobile, but several of them did not receive the money due to alleged malpractices.

“An SIT has been formed. Our administration is very strong. They have already arrested six people and will do whatever is required. The group (involved in the case) is from Maharashtra and Rajasthan. Such groups exist in almost all other states,” the Chief Minister said. The government has started giving money to all who did not receive it, she added.

Meanwhile, a senior officer of state police on Friday said that in all, 1,911 out of 16 lakh students of state-run schools have fallen victim to a cyber-fraud linked to the state government’s ‘Taruner Swapno’ scheme, which provides Rs 10,000 to Class 10 and 12 students to purchase tablets. The scam prompted police to launch an investigation. So far, 93 cases have been filed, and 11 people have been arrested in connection with the fraudulent activities, he added.

“So far, 11 people have been arrested and 93 FIRs lodged in connection with the tablet scheme scam. Out of the 16 lakh students of Class 10 and 12, 1,911 students have been defrauded,” ADG (South Bengal) Supratim Sarkar told reporters. According to Sarkar, the fraud was conducted by cybercriminals operating from multiple states, including Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Jharkhand.

“The investigation has uncovered evidence suggesting the involvement of interstate gangs. Some of the arrested suspects have reportedly admitted to being part of these operations, and documents seized during the raids have confirmed their participation in previous cyber scams, including siphoning off funds from other Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) schemes and the national scholarship portal,” he added.

The state police has set up Special Investigation Teams (SITs) to probe the scam and are working closely with law enforcement agencies in other states. They are investigating whether there was any manipulation of the system at the local level or if internal collusion helped the fraudsters, he added.

“We are trying to find out whether these miscreants manipulated the system, or there was any involvement of people at the ground level, or whether someone acted as a mole in the system to help the fraudsters,” Sarkar said.
