Tragic Incident in Kolkata: Man Suspected of Suicide After House Fire

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, March 27, 2025, Kolkata :  A tragic incident unfolded in Tantipara under Lilua police station when a fire broke out in a residential house late at night. The sudden explosion and flames alerted neighbors, who rushed to the scene and discovered a shocking sight—a man hanging from a tree near the burning house.

Upon witnessing the fire, locals immediately sprang into action, using buckets of water from a nearby water source in an attempt to douse the flames. Shortly thereafter, two fire engines arrived and successfully brought the fire under control. Police officials reached the location, retrieved the body, and sent it to Howrah District Hospital for further procedures. The deceased has been identified as Arun Roy.

Preliminary police investigations revealed that Arun Roy’s wife and child had traveled to Thakurnagar on Wednesday to attend a religious function, leaving him alone in the house. According to sources close to the investigation, Arun Roy and his wife were reportedly experiencing marital discord and had been living separately within the same residence. Based on initial findings, authorities suspect that Arun Roy may have taken his own life by releasing gas from a cylinder and setting fire to the house, possibly due to ongoing domestic tensions.

Further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact cause of the fire and circumstances surrounding the incident. The authorities have urged people to reach out for help in times of distress and emphasized the importance of mental health awareness to prevent such tragedies.

Calcutta High Court Extends Interim Bail of Sujoy Krishna Bhadra in Recruitment Corruption Case

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, Kolkata, March 24, 2025: The Calcutta High Court has extended the interim bail of Sujoy Krishna Bhadra, also known as Kalighat’s Kaku, in connection with the ongoing recruitment corruption case. The division bench, comprising Justice Arijit Banerjee, granted the extension until the end of April, with the next hearing scheduled for April 22.

During the hearing, Bhadra’s lawyer, Sabyasachi Banerjee, raised multiple complaints regarding the presence of central forces at his client’s residence. He alleged that the forces were occupying the house with the air conditioning running 24 hours a day and using the household toilet, which Bhadra objected to. The lawyer requested that the forces be provided with an alternative restroom facility, located outside the house.

In response, the court ruled that the security personnel would have to stay temporarily outside the house, with a tarpaulin arrangement made for them to sit in the heat. Additionally, the court instructed that fans be provided to ensure their comfort during the hot weather.

Sujoy Krishna Bhadra, who has been under surveillance by the central forces since his bail was granted, was allowed to have doctors, relatives, and a banker visit his residence in Kalighat. The Calcutta High Court had initially granted bail after considering Bhadra’s physical condition but stipulated that he could not leave his house except for medical reasons, and any travel outside the premises would require permission from the CBI.

Following this ruling, Bhadra’s uncle, who resides in Behala, continues to stay at the Kalighat residence. The court’s recent extension of his interim bail provides him with some relief while the investigation continues.

Sujoy Krishna Bhadra Seeks Extension of Conditional Bail from Calcutta High Court

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, Kolkata, March 20, 2025: Sujoy Krishna Bhadra, who was arrested in connection with a recruitment case, has once again approached the Calcutta High Court seeking an extension of his conditional interim bail and a relaxation of the imposed conditions.

Bhadra was  initially granted interim bail due to health concerns, first in an Enforcement Directorate (ED) case in December and later in a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) case in February. The division bench of Justice Arijit Banerjee and Justice Apurba Singh Roy had noted concerns over Bhadra’s deteriorating heart cndition and decided to grant him bail on medical grounds. As a result, he has been staying at home under these conditions until the last week of March.

His case is scheduled to be heard in court later this month, where his legal team is expected to present arguments for extending the bail period. Reports suggest that the latest application also requests a reduction in the conditions imposed on him during the interim bail. The court’s decision on the matter will determine whether Bhadra continues to remain out on bail or has to comply with stricter legal proceedings.

Crackdown on Illegal Arms Trade in Kolkata Leads to Arrest

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, March 17, 2025, Kolkata : With elections still nearly a year away, concerns over illegal arms trade are escalating in Kolkata. In a major breakthrough, the Special Task Force (STF) of the Railway Police made a significant arrest on Monday, uncovering an arms smuggling operation in the heart of the city.

Acting on intelligence inputs, STF officials apprehended a suspect near Sealdah station at approximately 5:30 AM. The individual, identified as Hasan Sheikh, a resident of Malda, was found in possession of six firearms and eight rounds of ammunition. Authorities confirmed that the weapons were being transported illegally, raising alarms over potential threats to public safety.

According to officials, Hasan Sheikh had traveled aboard the Hat Bazar Express and was intercepted upon his arrival at Sealdah station. A routine baggage check led to the discovery of the concealed firearms and ammunition. Following the seizure, law enforcement personnel immediately took him into custody for further investigation.

Preliminary inquiries suggest that the weapons originated from Bihar, specifically Mansingh, and were transported to Kolkata via Kaliachak in Malda. Investigators are now working to trace the supply chain and identify any larger networks involved in the illicit arms trade.

STF officials have initiated legal proceedings and are preparing a detailed seizure report near Sealdah station. The accused is currently being interrogated to uncover potential connections and ascertain the final destination of the smuggled arms. Authorities remain vigilant and have intensified surveillance to prevent further instances of illegal arms trafficking in the city. The investigation is ongoing, and more arrests are anticipated as law enforcement agencies continue their crackdown on unlawful activities.

Indian Journalists Union Condemns Arrest of Two Women Journalists in Telangana

KalimNews, New Delhi, March 13, 2025 : The Indian Journalists Union (IJU) has strongly condemned the arrest of two women journalists, P Revathi, Managing Director of the online news channel Pulse News, and reporter Bandi Sandhya. The Hyderabad Cyber Crime police detained them on March 12, citing their alleged circulation of a video containing defamatory content against the ruling Congress government and Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy. The journalists have been charged under various sections of the IT Act and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), with the police claiming that the case involves political motivations.

According to the police, the video in question was posted on social media platform X and was allegedly recorded at the office of the Opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) party in Banjara Hills. Authorities claim the video was funded by the BRS and was posted following a complaint by the Congress state secretary of social media. The video featured a provocative interview with an individual making controversial remarks, leading to an FIR under sections 111, 61(2), 353(2), and 352 of BNS, along with section 67 of the IT Act, which pertains to publishing or circulating false information, rumors, or content intended to provoke a breach of peace.

The police have also accused the journalists of involvement in prior cases of social media trolling. They claim the video was recorded in February but started circulating online from March 10, just before the Telangana Assembly’s Budget session on March 12. A search of the journalists’ office led to the seizure of laptops, hard disks, and CPUs as part of the investigation. Revathi had previously posted on X urging people not to share the video, fearing legal repercussions. Meanwhile, the BRS party has condemned the arrests, arguing that the video merely amplified the grievances of a common citizen against the government.

In a joint statement, IJU President Geetartha Pathak, a former member of the Press Council of India, and Secretary General Sabina Inderjit, who also serves as Vice President of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), criticized the swift action by the cyber police against the so-called trolling of the Chief Minister, labeling it a politically motivated move. They noted that women journalists across the country frequently face online harassment, yet law enforcement agencies have not acted against the perpetrators. The IJU emphasized that the video expressed a citizen’s concerns and that arresting journalists for performing their duty is unacceptable. The Union has demanded the immediate withdrawal of all charges and the release of Revathi and Sandhya, reiterating its call for press freedom and the protection of journalists from political persecution.

IJU Condemns Arrest of Journalist Tushar Kharat, Demands Immediate Release

KalimNews, March 13, 2025, Kalimpong :  The Indian Journalists Union (IJU) has strongly condemned the arrest of Tushar Kharat, the editor of the local YouTube channel Lay Bhari, who was detained by Satara police in Mumbai on March 9. Kharat’s arrest came after a complaint was lodged by Maharashtra’s State Rural Development Minister, Jaykumar Gore, accusing the journalist of publishing defamatory content about him.

The complaint alleged that Kharat uploaded material that falsely portrayed Gore in connection with a 2016 case and claimed that the journalist had threatened to “fabricate” more allegations with the help of women, demanding Rs 5 crore to resolve the issue.

The charges against Gore, who recently faced opposition calls for his resignation, stem from accusations of harassment, including sending objectionable photos to a woman. Gore has denied all allegations, and as part of his defense, he filed breach of privilege notices against several political figures, including Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut, NCP (SP) MLA Rohit Pawar, and Kharat, accusing them of defaming him.

In response to the arrest, IJU President Geetartha Pathak, a former member of the Press Council of India, and Secretary General Sabina Inderjit, who also serves as Vice President of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), issued a joint statement. They emphasized that Kharat’s report was based on allegations made in the Maharashtra state assembly by opposition leaders, and as such, his arrest for publishing a story related to proceedings within the assembly is unjustifiable. They further argued that accusations of breach of privilege against a journalist for reporting on public matters are unacceptable.

The IJU leaders have called for the immediate release of Tushar Kharat and demanded that all charges against him be dropped. They urged the government to uphold the freedom of the press and ensure that journalists can report without fear of retaliation.

Meanwhile, Shiv Sena (UBT) mouthpiece Saamana criticized the Maharashtra government, alleging an assault on democratic norms. The editorial called for Gore’s resignation and accused the government of suppressing dissent.

According to the editorial, Kharat was arrested and booked in two cases: one for allegedly making casteist remarks against Shekhar Patole, an aide of Gore, and another for conspiring to defame Gore by raising sexual assault allegations and demanding money. Saamana questioned whether Maharashtra was under an undeclared Emergency, alleging media censorship and political misuse of law enforcement.

The editorial further criticized Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, alleging that his administration was shielding ministers accused of misconduct. It suggested that instead of addressing allegations, Gore misused his power to have Kharat arrested and implicated in multiple cases to keep him in jail. The paper demanded accountability from Fadnavis in the state legislature and questioned whether Maharashtra was becoming a state where truth-telling journalists were silenced.

Saamana highlighted Maharashtra’s legacy of fearless journalism and expressed concern that Kharat’s arrest marked a departure from democratic values. It called upon political leaders and citizens to oppose such actions and uphold press freedom. The editorial also referenced past instances of police misuse and drew parallels with other controversial political arrests, calling for a robust opposition response.

The arrest has sparked widespread debate, with press freedom advocates arguing that it sets a dangerous precedent. The case continues to draw attention, with demands for Kharat’s release intensifying amid growing concerns over the suppression of journalistic integrity in Maharashtra.

Court Sentences Three to Life Imprisonment in 2020 Habra Double Murder Case

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, March 5, 2025, Kolkata :   A chilling case of greed-driven murder shook Habra, North 24 Parganas, in 2020, where a daughter and her husband orchestrated the killing of her parents for property. The Barasat court has now delivered its verdict, sentencing the three accused, including a hired sharpshooter, to life imprisonment.

According to police reports, the crime stemmed from severe financial distress faced by the accused. Bunty Sadhu, the son-in-law of the deceased couple, had accumulated a debt exceeding seven lakh rupees. Desperate to resolve his financial crisis, he and his wife, Nivedita Sadhu, pressured her parents to sell their property. When their demands were ignored, they resorted to a sinister plan to eliminate the elderly couple and seize the assets.

Bunty and Nivedita hired sharpshooter Ajay Das to carry out the murder. The crime initially baffled investigators, as the accused daughter and son-in-law actively misled authorities to divert suspicion. However, as the investigation progressed, police discovered Bunty’s significant debts, which eventually led them to the truth. Then the interrogation of Nivedita and Bunty started. That’s when their plan came to light. The hired killer Ajay was also arrested. Finally, the Barasat court ordered life imprisonment.

On Monday, the court pronounced its verdict, sentencing the couple and the contract killer to life imprisonment. As the judge delivered the ruling, the convicted daughter and son-in-law remained silent, reflecting on the weight of their actions. The judgment brings closure to a case that had left the local community in shock and serves as a grim reminder of the consequences of unchecked greed.

CBI to File Supplementary Chargesheet in RG Kar Doctor’s Death Case, Focuses on Evidence Theft and Cover-Up Attempt

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, February 26, 2025, Kolkata : The tragic case involving the rape and murder of a female doctor working at RG Kar Hospital continues to unfold, with the court recently announcing the punishment for the main accused. However, the investigation is far from over. A supplementary chargesheet is set to be filed by the CBI regarding the second aspect of the case: evidence theft.

According to CBI sources, this supplementary chargesheet will detail evidence obtained from the CCTV footage of RG Kar Hospital and Tala police station. The chargesheet is also based on the testimony of approximately 180 individuals who were questioned during the investigation. The CBI is set to file this chargesheet in the court of the Sealdah Additional Judicial Magistrate on March 3.

A CBI official revealed that there was an attempt to cover up the true cause of the young doctor’s death, with claims that her death was initially portrayed as a suicide. New information gathered during the investigation has led to the discovery of critical evidence, which will be admissible in court. This evidence is expected to play a pivotal role in the upcoming supplementary chargesheet.

Earlier in the case, the CBI had arrested two individuals—former RG Kar Hospital principal Sandeep Ghosh and former OC of Tala police station Abhijit Mondal—on charges of evidence destruction. However, both individuals were granted bail after the chargesheet was not submitted on time.

As the investigation continues, the focus now shifts to the forthcoming supplementary chargesheet, which aims to provide further clarity on the efforts to obscure the circumstances surrounding the doctor’s tragic death. The outcome of this new chargesheet may offer further insight into the conspiracy behind the case and the individuals involved in the cover-up.

Authorities Focus on Bangladeshi Militant Links in Kolkata ATM Looting Incidents

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, February 14, 2025, Kolkata: A series of ATM fraud and looting incidents across Kolkata and its neighboring districts have raised serious concerns among law enforcement agencies. In multiple locations, ATMs have been targeted, with criminals breaking into machines, stealing cash, and, in some cases, setting fire to the vandalized units. The latest investigations have uncovered potential links to the Bangladeshi Hadith militant organization, which is suspected to have played a role in at least three coordinated incidents on the same day.

One of the primary incidents occurred in the Survey Park police station area near Jadavpur in Kolkata. Customers attempting to withdraw money from an ATM at a state-owned bank branch reported significant financial losses due to fraud. On Friday night, around 8:30 PM, customers at the State Bank of India ATM near Jadavpur Stadium experienced suspicious transaction failures. They claimed that while their accounts were debited, the cash did not dispense from the machine. A woman reportedly lost approximately one lakh rupees, while a man suffered a loss of twenty-five thousand rupees. A formal complaint was lodged at the Survey Park Police Station, prompting an immediate investigation.

In a separate but equally alarming incident in Howrah, a group of miscreants broke into an ATM in the Alampur area under the Sankrail Police Station, looted a substantial amount of money, and attempted to set the machine on fire. The situation came to light on Saturday morning when a customer, arriving to withdraw cash, discovered the vandalism and promptly alerted the locals. The Sankrail Police Station was notified, and an investigation was launched. Authorities are also examining whether a security guard was present at the ATM counter during the time of the attack.

Simultaneously, in the heart of Shantipur town in the Nadia district, criminals damaged an ATM at Dakghar Mor, breaking parts of the machine and exposing internal components. The incident caused alarm among bank authorities and the police administration, leading to heightened security concerns. The situation in Shantipur has remained tense since Saturday morning, with locals and officials closely monitoring developments.

These incidents have underscored a growing pattern of organized financial crimes, raising concerns about cross-border involvement. Police are intensifying their efforts to track down those responsible, with intelligence units working to establish definitive links to the suspected militant organization. The authorities have urged banks to reinforce security measures, install high-surveillance cameras, and ensure the presence of security personnel at ATM counters to prevent further occurrences.

Police Action Following Violent Clash Between Rival TMC Factions Over Illegal Sand Mining in Birbhum

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, February 12, 2025, Kolkata : In an alarming turn of events in Birbhum, two factions of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) clashed on Tuesday, resulting in serious injuries to a party worker. The confrontation, which took place in Jamalpur, Kankartala, was linked to a longstanding dispute over control of the illegal sand mining business along the Ajay River. The incident involved bomb explosions between rival groups, leaving Sheikh Saktar Ali severely injured, with his right leg amputated as a result. His brother, Babu Sheikh, also sustained splinter injuries.

In the wake of the violence, Kankartala Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Purnendubikash Das was removed from his duties on Wednesday, less than 24 hours after the clash, and has been confined to the barracks until further orders. His replacement, Dubrajpur Circle Inspector Subhasish Haldar, has been tasked with overseeing the Kankartala police station on an interim basis. District Superintendent of Police Amandeep has made it clear that maintaining law and order in the area is of utmost importance.

The clash, which involved explosive devices allegedly fired between two rival groups fighting for control over the illegal sand mining operations, has raised concerns about the deepening power struggle within the ruling TMC. According to sources involved in the investigation, the dispute centers around two local leaders, Kest and Kajal Sheikh, who are believed to have orchestrated the violence.

By Wednesday afternoon, a total of nine individuals, including Swapan Sen, a TMC member from the Khayrasole community block unit, had been arrested. All nine suspects will be presented before the Dubrajpur court. Investigations are ongoing, with authorities focusing on those directly responsible for the bombings. However, concerns persist as the two main leaders, despite their involvement in the violence, remain under the protection of the government.

BJP legislator from Dubrajpur, Anup Saha, has stated that the clash was a result of an ongoing rivalry between two factions of the TMC fighting for dominance over the illegal sand trade. Saha’s remarks suggest that the incident was a direct consequence of internal party strife, which has spilled over into violent confrontations.

In contrast, Moloy Mukherjee, the vice-president of the TMC’s district unit, dismissed the allegations, asserting that the clash had no connection to the party’s internal divisions. Mukherjee emphasized that the TMC does not condone such actions and assured that law enforcement is taking decisive action against those involved. “Nobody will be spared,” he said.

The situation in Birbhum has drawn attention to the growing issue of illegal sand mining in the region and the violent conflicts that often arise over control of this lucrative business. As investigations continue, the authorities face mounting pressure to address the underlying issues and prevent further escalation of violence in the area.

CBI Faces Crucial Moment in Primary Recruitment Corruption Case as Sujoy Krishna Bhadra Appears in Court for Voice Sample Collection

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, February 11, 2025, Kolkata :  The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is facing mounting pressure in the ongoing primary recruitment corruption case, with significant developments unfolding today. Sujoy Krishna Bhadra, known as “Kalighat’s uncle,” has appeared in court as part of the investigation, with his voice sample set to be collected in the presence of a judge. The collection of this sample is seen as a critical step in the case, as the CBI aims to verify and compare it with other existing evidence to strengthen its investigation.

Previously, Bhadra was ordered to appear in court but failed to comply, citing health reasons. However, after a prolonged absence, he has now presented himself in court, leading many to believe that this development could mark a turning point for the CBI. The voice sample collection is expected to provide crucial information that will aid the investigation into the alleged recruitment corruption.

Sources close to the investigation revealed that the CBI plans to collect Bhadra’s voice sample today, which will then be compared with other samples already in their possession. The outcome of this comparison is expected to play a pivotal role in the direction of the investigation and could offer significant insights into the primary recruitment corruption case.

Bhadra’s legal troubles have been ongoing for some time. He was recently granted bail in connection with the Enforcement Directorate (ED) case, which is also linked to the broader corruption scandal. Despite a history of health-related excuses, including a period spent in jail and treatment at SSKM Hospital, Bhadra has finally appeared before the court, signaling a potential breakthrough for the CBI.

The investigation into the primary recruitment corruption case is now heavily reliant on the voice sample collection from Bhadra. The CBI’s next steps will likely be determined by the results of this analysis, and many are watching closely to see if this will bring the case to a decisive moment.

Explosion at Illegal Firecracker Factory in Nadia Claims Four Lives, Raises Questions on Law Enforcement

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, February 7, 2025, Kalyani, Nadia  : A devastating explosion at an illegal firecracker factory in Nadia has left four people dead, their charred bodies recovered from the site. Locals report that two of the deceased were women. The factory was located in the Rathtala area of Ward No. 20 of Kalyani Municipality, where the tragic incident occurred.

In a surprising revelation, the local Trinamool councilor, whose jurisdiction includes the area, claimed that he had no knowledge of the illegal factory operating in his ward. He stated, “I came to know about it all after the explosion today. But it was not a factory. It was running in a house.” This statement has raised several concerns, as it appears that the presence of the illegal operation went unnoticed by both local authorities and the police.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with questions being raised about the increasing number of illegal firecracker factories in the region. Despite ongoing protests and calls for action against such operations in congested areas, little progress has been made in curbing the illegal activity.

Local BJP MLA, Ambika Roy, has voiced her concerns about the long-standing nature of the illegal operation, questioning how the firecracker factory was allowed to run undetected for so long. She criticized the law enforcement agencies, stating, “When such incidents happen, the police take action. The police knew everything. This shows that there is no such thing as law and order in the state.”

The explosion has highlighted the dangerous and unchecked proliferation of illegal firecracker factories, with growing fears about public safety. Authorities are now under pressure to investigate how such operations continue to function, often in residential areas, without being detected by local police or administrative bodies.

Trinamool Worker Shot Dead in Broad Daylight; Police Commissioner Transferred in Aftermath

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, February 2, 2025, Kolkata :  Tensions escalated in Naihati after Trinamool Congress worker Santesh Yadav was allegedly shot dead in broad daylight on Friday, prompting swift action from the authorities. The following day, Barrackpore Police Commissioner Alok Rajoria was removed from his position and transferred to the post of DIG Traffic. Ajay Thakur has been appointed as the new Commissioner of Police for Barrackpore, while SP Traffic, Raj Narayan Mukherjee, has also been reassigned to the Second Battalion.

The tragic incident of Yadav’s murder is part of a growing list of similar attacks on Trinamool Congress workers across various districts, including Malda and North 24 Parganas. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who has repeatedly stressed the importance of maintaining law and order, delivered a stern message following the murder of Trinamool councilor Dulal Sarkar in Malda. She raised questions regarding the police’s handling of law and order, emphasizing the need for effective action.

Despite the Chief Minister’s calls for accountability and better enforcement of law, violent crimes continue to plague the state, with the Naihati murder underscoring the ongoing challenges in maintaining peace and security. The latest developments in Barrackpore, including the reshuffling of key police officials, highlight the government’s attempt to address concerns over rising crime rates in the region.
