Supreme Court Set to Hear Long-Pending DA Case of Bengal Government Employees on Friday

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, May 15, 2025,

Delhi: After years of delays and repeated adjournments, the dearness allowance (DA) case concerning West Bengal state government employees is finally set for a crucial hearing in the Supreme Court on Friday. The case, which holds immense importance for thousands of state employees, has been entangled in legal proceedings for over two years, despite employees securing favorable verdicts at every stage of the judicial process.

Originally sparked by disputes surrounding the recommendations of the Pay Commission, the matter progressed from the State Administrative Tribunal to the Calcutta High Court and eventually reached the Supreme Court. Throughout this legal journey, state government employees have consistently prevailed, bolstering hopes for a conclusive outcome.

The case’s trajectory in the Supreme Court has been particularly complex due to frequent changes in the composition of the bench. It was initially heard in 2022 by Justices Dinesh Maheshwari and Hrishikesh Roy. The last hearing took place on April 28, 2023, under Justices Maheshwari and Sanjay Kumar. However, with the subsequent retirement of Justices Maheshwari and Roy, the case faced further delays and uncertainty.

Despite yet another adjournment on Wednesday, optimism surged following confirmation from Advocate Vikas Ranjan Bhattacharya that the matter is now scheduled for a final hearing this Friday. Speaking to reporters, Bhattacharya said, “The DA case was scheduled at 2 p.m. today. We were all present, but due to some special reasons, the court could not take it up. On our request, the hearing has been rescheduled to Friday. This time, the case will not be adjourned. We expect the final hearing to take place.”

As anticipation builds, government employees across the state are hopeful that the verdict—if delivered this week—will finally bring closure to a case that has long affected their financial entitlements.

Former Union Minister John Barla Joins Trinamool Congress, Cites BJP Obstruction to Development

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, May 15, 2025, Kolkata :  After weeks of speculation, former Union Minister and BJP MP John Barla formally joined the Trinamool Congress on Thursday, marking a significant political shift ahead of the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections. He was welcomed into the party fold by senior Trinamool leaders Subrata Bakshi and Arup Biswas at a public event, where Barla expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for giving him what he described as a “big opportunity” to work for his community.

Barla, who had reportedly been discontented with the BJP for some time, stated that discussions about his joining Trinamool had been ongoing for the past six to seven months. “Didi also called me occasionally. She asked me to work, and I wanted to continue doing what I had started in my own areas, like the tea gardens and local fields,” he said.

Reflecting on his tenure as Union Minister, Barla claimed that he faced persistent internal resistance from within the BJP, particularly from the current Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal, Shuvendu Adhikari. He pointed to a stalled hospital project as an example, saying, “I went to build a hospital worth ₹160 crore with 100 percent grant funding on railway land. The land was identified by the Railways, and only the MoU was pending. But a call came, and the project was stopped. It was not the opposition—it was someone from my own party. Who will build a party if development is obstructed like this?”

Barla’s decision to switch parties has sent ripples through political circles in the state, with many viewing it as a setback for the BJP. His work in Alipurduar and his strong connection with tea garden workers in North Bengal are seen as significant assets that the Trinamool Congress is eager to leverage. Welcoming him to the party, Trinamool leader Arup Biswas handed over the party flag and remarked, “I am joining the party of mother, soil, and people after becoming disillusioned with the BJP.”

The Trinamool Congress has expressed optimism that Barla’s grassroots experience and regional popularity will bolster its presence in North Bengal, a region where the BJP had made notable gains in previous elections.

Arjun Singh Calls Migrant Bengali Voters ‘Game Changers’ in Bengal, Bihar Elections

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, May 15, 2025, Kolkata :  In the run-up to crucial elections in Bihar later this year and West Bengal in 2026, BJP leader and former MP Arjun Singh has stirred the political pot with a strong appeal aimed at mobilizing Bengali voters living outside the state. Speaking alongside Union Minister of State Satish Chandra Dubey, Singh claimed that voters from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar—especially Bengalis who have migrated for work—could significantly influence the outcome of the West Bengal Assembly elections.

Addressing party workers and supporters, Singh urged that steps be taken to ensure that Bengalis residing in Bihar and other states return to Bengal to cast their votes during the upcoming state elections. In return, he suggested that those who are voters in Bihar but currently living in Bengal should go back to vote in their home constituencies during the Bihar elections. “All these Bengalis should be sent to Bengal to vote. And those who are voters in Bihar, they will go from Bengal and vote in Bihar. If this can be done, then BJP is sure to win in both states,” Singh asserted.

The former MP described these migrant voters as “game changers” and emphasized the need for their mobilization to secure a favorable outcome for the Bharatiya Janata Party in both states. He appealed directly to Union Minister Satish Chandra Dubey to coordinate efforts in this regard. Singh’s remarks align with previous statements made by BJP leader Shuvendu Adhikari, who has consistently advocated for strong outreach efforts and emphasized religious identity in political strategy.

Stressing the need for action beyond rhetoric, Singh urged party workers to take to the ground rather than rely solely on speeches and public addresses. Drawing a parallel with national defense, he stated, “The BJP’s defense system should be strengthened. Just as the Prime Minister strengthened the defense system and taught Pakistan a lesson in three hours by sitting in India, similarly the BJP’s defense system should be strengthened.”

His comments reflect a broader strategy by the BJP to consolidate support across state borders and tap into the influence of migrant voters, positioning them as a critical element in the upcoming electoral battles in both Bihar and West Bengal.

West Bengal Tops in Small Industries, Announces New Industrial and Marketing Infrastructure Plans

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, May 15, 2025, Kolkata :
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced significant developments in the state’s industrial landscape, highlighting the state’s top position in the country for small-scale industries. Speaking from Kolkata, she stated that 140 lakh individuals are currently employed in 90 lakh small industrial units across the state. The Chief Minister emphasized the state’s leadership in the sector, noting that 660 industrial clusters already exist, and more are in demand. She underlined the state’s methodical approach to approving new units by ensuring proper land verification and multi-level clearances before granting permissions.

In a major move aimed at supporting small entrepreneurs and self-help groups, the Chief Minister unveiled a plan to construct 23 shopping complexes across the 23 districts of West Bengal. These hubs are intended to promote local products and facilitate better market access. Each complex will be constructed by private entities on one acre of land provided free of cost by the state government. In return, two floors in each complex will be reserved exclusively for self-help groups, also at no cost. Land clearances for these projects have already been granted in 11 districts, including Purulia, Darjeeling, Bankura, Cooch Behar, Howrah, Jalpaiguri, Jhargram, Murshidabad, West Midnapore, and Uttar Dinajpur. The process for clearance in the remaining 12 districts is underway.

The Chief Minister also announced the allocation of 10 industrial plots to prominent companies in key locations including Raghunathpur (Purulia), Mankar (Durgapur), and Panagarh (Burdwan). These plots, covering a total of 2,515 acres, are expected to attract investments worth approximately ₹25,000 crore. She projected that the resulting projects—many in the steel sector—will create over 70,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities.

Furthermore, the state government has expanded its support for micro and small enterprises, allocating land to 43 such units across 15 industrial estates following a recent cabinet decision. These units will be distributed across various districts, contributing to decentralized industrial growth. According to the Chief Minister, “All these will be in different districts. In this case, there will be an investment of hundreds of crores of taka and employment will be created in every district.

Mamata Banerjee Announces New Industrial Zones and Livelihood Security for Workers in West Bengal

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, Kolkata, May 14, 2025 : In a major move to bolster industrialization and provide greater employment opportunities, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday announced the identification of new industrial zones across West Bengal. This initiative comes as part of the state government’s ongoing efforts to attract investments and stimulate economic growth, especially following the successful World Bengal Trade Conference.

Speaking from the state secretariat, Nabanna, the Chief Minister highlighted that ten plots of land have been earmarked in Raghunathpur, Purulia, and additional sites in Panagarh, Durgapur, and Howrah. These locations are set to become hubs of industrial activity as the state seeks to encourage both domestic and foreign investments. “Rapid industrialization is our goal,” said Banerjee, underscoring that the development of these industrial zones will play a key role in transforming the state’s economy.

The Chief Minister also addressed concerns raised by the opposition regarding the state’s industrial and employment potential. While investments have been flowing into West Bengal, with several foreign deals already secured, opposition leaders have frequently questioned whether the state is doing enough to create industrial jobs. Banerjee’s latest announcement aims to dispel these concerns by showcasing the government’s proactive approach in creating industrial zones that will serve as a catalyst for future job creation.

In addition to the industrial developments, Banerjee introduced a new initiative aimed at providing financial support to Group C and Group D workers in the state. Beginning April 1, 2025, the West Bengal Livelihood Social Security Scheme will provide monthly stipends of Rs 25,000 for Group C employees and Rs 20,000 for Group D employees. The scheme, administered by the state’s Labor Department, is designed to offer a safety net for workers while also boosting the state’s commitment to improving living standards and social security.

The announcement of the new industrial zones, combined with the livelihood security scheme, underscores the state government’s commitment to both industrial growth and the welfare of its workforce. As Mamata Banerjee emphasized, the state’s focus on industrialization and job creation aims to elevate West Bengal’s position in India’s broader economic landscape. The move is expected to attract more investments, provide employment opportunities, and support local industries.

These efforts reflect a broader vision for the future of West Bengal as the state aims to balance industrial development with the welfare of its people. The upcoming industrial zones are expected to create thousands of new jobs, further driving economic growth and providing much-needed support to workers in the region.

India Rejects Trump’s Claim of Mediation in Ceasefire, Slams Unfounded Allegations

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, Delhi, May 14, 2025 : Tensions flared as the Indian government responded sharply to former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent statements regarding the India-Pakistan ceasefire. Trump had claimed that both India and Pakistan had agreed to halt hostilities due to American pressure, suggesting his direct involvement in bringing about the ceasefire. India, however, has expressed strong disapproval of these remarks, clarifying that the ceasefire was not influenced by external intervention.

On Tuesday, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a formal response, vehemently denying any suggestion that the United States played a role in the ceasefire agreement. The MEA made it clear that the decision was a result of India’s own strategic interests and diplomatic discussions, not any foreign pressure. External Affairs Secretary Randhir Jaiswal addressed a press conference in which he explained that while there had been ongoing talks between Indian and American leaders, they had nothing to do with trade or the Kashmir issue.

The controversy began after Trump’s remarks last weekend, where he claimed credit for brokering the ceasefire, stating, “After a long night of talks, both countries have agreed to a complete ceasefire from this moment. Congratulations to both sides for using realism at the right time.” Trump went on to assert, “We pressured the two nuclear powers to cease hostilities. I warned them not to stop the war, not to stop trade either. That worked. I stopped the India-Pakistan war.”

In response, India made it clear that while discussions with the U.S. leadership were held throughout the course of Operation Vermilion, which began on May 7, no pressure was applied regarding the ceasefire. The Foreign Secretary categorically stated that the situation on the ground and the evolving military dynamics were the primary focus of the talks, with no mention of any trade-related conditions or mediatory efforts by the U.S.

Furthermore, the Indian government reaffirmed its longstanding position on the Kashmir issue, emphasizing that it remains a bilateral matter between India and Pakistan, with no room for external mediation. “Kashmir was, is, and will remain a bilateral issue between India and Pakistan,” Jaiswal reiterated, making it clear that India would not entertain any attempts to internationalize the dispute.

The Indian government’s firm stance highlights its commitment to maintaining sovereignty and safeguarding its national interests. While diplomatic channels between India and the U.S. remain active, the statement sent a clear message that India’s foreign policy will not be shaped by external pressures, particularly when it comes to matters of national security and territorial integrity.

As the situation continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how these diplomatic exchanges will impact future relations between the two countries, but one thing is certain: India’s leadership is resolute in its position on the ceasefire and the Kashmir issue.

A True Patriot: The Heroic Journey of Panchkari Banerjee, A Veteran of Two Indo-Pak Wars

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, May 14, 2025, Kolkata :  Over 85 years old now, Panchkari Banerjee defies age with the vigor and passion of a much younger man. His youthful energy and unwavering patriotism are evident to anyone who meets him, though his memories stretch back more than six decades to a time when he stood on the front lines of India’s wars against Pakistan.

Born and raised in Chayanpur village in Purulia Block No. 2, Panchkari’s journey into the Indian Army began when he was just 22 years old. Without informing his family, he traveled to Purulia city, determined to join the armed forces. His resolve led him to the army examination, which he passed with flying colors, ultimately enlisting on January 21, 1963.

After completing rigorous training at the Roorkee Training Center in Uttar Pradesh, his service took him to Jammu and Kashmir, and later to Srinagar and Ladakh. It was during the 1965 Indo-Pakistani War that Panchkari Banerjee found himself posted at Kaluch in the Sialkot sector, right on the border with Pakistan, where he bravely fought. His second engagement in the Indo-Pakistani conflict came in 1971, when he played a pivotal role in overseeing 1,600 prisoners of war at the Roorkee camp.

Now in his twilight years, Panchkari’s love for his country remains as strong as ever. Despite his age, the memories of those formative days on the battlefield continue to resonate in his mind. He remains deeply invested in the current geopolitical situation, frequently voicing his opinions on national defense and watching news reports closely. “India is giving Pakistan the response it deserves,” he says, a sentiment shaped by his firsthand experiences and the sacrifices of his youth.

In addition to his passion for national defense, Panchkari spends his days reading newspapers and writing poetry. His reflections often circle back to the ideals of patriotism and the spirit of sacrifice that continue to shape India’s resilience.

Panchkari Banerjee’s dedication to his country is a testament to the unwavering patriotism that has always fueled India’s defense. He may be far from the battlefield now, but his spirit remains undiminished. A salute to him is a salute to the countless heroes who have kept India’s flag flying high against all odds.

Modi Asserts India’s Unyielding Stance: No Talks with Pakistan Except on Terrorism and PoK

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, May 13, 2025, Delhi :  Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed on Monday that India will not engage in any dialogue with Pakistan unless the discussions are strictly confined to terrorism and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). Addressing the nation following a period of heightened military tensions, the Prime Minister made it clear that terrorism and diplomacy cannot go hand in hand, emphasizing that “terror and talks cannot coexist.”

In a pointed message to both Pakistan and the international community, Modi warned that further acts of aggression from Pakistan would prompt unprecedented responses from India. Stressing national unity, he urged the country to stand together against all forms of terrorism, calling unity India’s greatest strength. “This is not an era of war,” he said, “but it is not an era of terrorism either.”

The Prime Minister expressed deep concern over Pakistan’s continued promotion of terrorism through state mechanisms, cautioning that such policies would eventually bring about the country’s downfall. He reiterated that for Pakistan to survive and progress, it must decisively abandon its support for terror activities.

In response to recent suggestions by former U.S. President Donald Trump for a diplomatic resolution with Pakistan, Modi maintained that India is not averse to dialogue—but only under specific and non-negotiable terms. Any potential talks, he asserted, would focus solely on terrorism and the status of PoK. Other issues, including trade or water-sharing agreements, are off the table as long as Pakistan continues to harbor and support terrorism.

Modi also addressed reports alleging that Pakistan had tied conditions to the recent ceasefire, including a call to resume the Indus Waters Treaty, which India had suspended as a strategic, non-military pressure point. India has officially denied these claims, reaffirming that its position on Kashmir and the treaty remains unchanged.

India has long held that Pakistan’s sponsorship of cross-border terrorism undermines any prospects for peace. This stance has been bolstered by mounting evidence connecting the Pakistani establishment to major terrorist incidents, including the 2001 Parliament attack, the 2008 Mumbai attacks, and the assaults on Uri and Pulwama in 2016 and 2019 respectively.

The recent attack in Pahalgam further cemented this viewpoint. Investigations revealed that the attackers were Pakistani nationals, with the Resistance Front—a Lashkar-e-Taiba proxy—claiming responsibility. India’s response was swift and decisive: Operation Sindoor was launched on May 6–7, targeting and destroying nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, including key facilities linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed. Over a hundred militants were reportedly eliminated.

Pakistan has repeatedly sought international mediation over the Kashmir issue, but India maintains that it is a strictly bilateral matter. Offers of mediation, including those by former President Trump, have been consistently rejected by India, which insists that talks can resume only if Pakistan ends all forms of terror support.

As regional tensions persist and international scrutiny continues, India stands firm on its commitment to national security and sovereignty. The government has reiterated that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India, and no compromise will be made on matters of national interest.

One Militant Killed in Ongoing Shopian Encounter Amid Operation Sindoor

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, May 13, 2025, New Delhi :  Security forces killed one militant during an encounter in the Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, as part of the ongoing counter-terrorism initiative, Operation Sindoor. According to initial police reports, the slain militant was affiliated with the proscribed group Lashkar-e-Taiba. The operation, launched based on intelligence inputs about militant movement in the forested region of Kellar in Jinpath, has escalated into an active gunfight with two more militants still engaged in the encounter.

The latest developments follow a surge in security operations across Jammu and Kashmir after the deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22. Since then, law enforcement agencies and the Indian Army have intensified their efforts, conducting widespread search operations and detaining over a hundred individuals on terrorism-related charges. Several militants have also been neutralized during these efforts.

On Tuesday morning, a cordon-and-search operation was initiated by the armed forces in the targeted Shopian region. Confronted with the tightening perimeter, the militants reportedly opened fire, prompting a swift and strategic response from the security personnel. A fierce exchange ensued, resulting in the death of one militant, while two others are still reportedly holed up in the area.

Operation Sindoor, launched on May 6–7, marks a significant military effort against terror infrastructure located across the border in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). As per official sources, nine militant camps were destroyed during the operation, and over a hundred militants were neutralized. The Indian Army has reiterated its commitment to eradicating all terrorist bases operating in the region.

Security forces remain on high alert, and combing operations in Shopian are ongoing. Authorities have maintained tight security and urged residents to remain vigilant while cooperating with ongoing investigations and counter-terror actions.

Baidyabati Declared India’s First Bird-Friendly and Community City on World Migratory Bird Day 2025

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, May 13, 2025, Kolkata : On the occasion of World Migratory Bird Day 2025, Baidyabati, a city in the Hooghly district of West Bengal, was officially declared India’s first bird-friendly and community city, meeting the criteria set by the United Nations. The announcement was made during a press conference held at the Baidyabati Municipality Hall on Tuesday evening, organized by the Baidyabati Biodiversity Management Committee.

The event brought together a diverse group of participants, including poets, writers, environmentalists, and local officials, who shared reflections through poetry and discussions. Eminent personalities such as poet, author, and lawyer Ujjwal Chakraborty, Baidyabati BMC Chairman Dr. Sanjay Chandra Sen, Municipal Chief Pintu Mahato, and BMC Secretary Amit Dutt were among those in attendance.

In alignment with the announcement, Baidyabati BMC unveiled the “Baidyabati Aravan Green Plan,” an initiative aimed at fostering ecological harmony in the city. This will be implemented alongside the “Sabuj Shree” project, a green initiative inspired by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. These initiatives are part of a broader commitment to promote sustainable urban development that supports biodiversity, particularly migratory birds.

Baidyabati, situated on the banks of the Hooghly River, is known for its rich cultural heritage and vibrant celebrations, including the grand Durga Puja festival. Now, the city is adding ecological stewardship to its cultural identity by taking measurable steps to safeguard bird populations and their habitats.

World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD), celebrated globally in May and October, highlights the importance of protecting migratory birds and the ecosystems they depend on. Observed on May 10 and scheduled again for October 11 in 2025, this year’s campaign emphasizes the creation of bird-friendly cities and communities. The theme underlines the growing impact of urban development on avian species and the need for responsive urban planning that prioritizes conservation.

WMBD 2025 calls on national and local governments, businesses, communities, and individuals to take concrete steps to support migratory birds. These include habitat restoration, pollution control, and building design modifications to prevent bird collisions. The campaign reinforces the message that both urban and rural communities have vital roles to play in ensuring the safe passage and survival of migratory birds.

With its new designation, Baidyabati sets a precedent for urban centers across India and the world, demonstrating that ecological responsibility and community involvement can work hand-in-hand to protect the planet’s migratory wildlife.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Address on Operation Sindoor and India’s Stance on Terrorism

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, May 12, 2025, Kolkata :
In a strong address to the nation today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted India’s strength, resilience, and commitment to eradicating terrorism. The Prime Minister began by saluting the nation’s armed forces, intelligence agencies, and scientists, commending them for their extraordinary efforts in safeguarding India’s security. He also acknowledged the unwavering courage and valor of the Indian soldiers in achieving the objectives of Operation Sindoor, dedicating their unparalleled bravery to every mother, sister, and daughter in the country.

Modi condemned the barbaric terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22, 2025, describing it as a brutal and shocking act of terror. Innocent civilians, enjoying their holidays, were targeted and killed in front of their families and children, merely because of their faith. The Prime Minister emphasized that the attack was not just an act of cruelty, but an attempt to fracture India’s social harmony. He praised the unity shown by every Indian citizen, community, and political party, which demanded strong action against terrorism.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to combating terrorism, Modi assured the nation that the armed forces were given full freedom to neutralize the terrorists responsible for the attack. He declared that terrorists now understand the consequences of harming the dignity of Indian women.

Operation Sindoor was presented as not only a military operation but a symbol of the emotions of millions of Indians. Modi reiterated that the Indian Armed Forces had executed precise strikes on terrorist hideouts and training centers in Pakistan on May 6-7, 2025, delivering a decisive blow to terrorism. He emphasized that such a bold move was unimaginable for the terrorists, but India’s unity and commitment to “Nation First” led to impactful results. The Prime Minister pointed out that Indian strikes had shattered both the infrastructure and morale of terrorist organizations, particularly targeting key locations in Pakistan such as Bahawalpur and Muridke, which had long been centers of global terrorism.

These sites had been linked to some of the world’s most devastating terror attacks, including the 9/11 attacks in the US, the London Tube bombings, and numerous terrorist incidents in India. Modi declared that since these terrorists had dared to attack the dignity of Indian women, India had taken decisive action to eliminate the heart of terrorism. As a result, over 100 dangerous terrorists were eliminated, including key figures who had long plotted against India.

The Prime Minister also addressed Pakistan’s reaction, noting that after India’s forceful strikes, Pakistan resorted to reckless aggression by targeting Indian schools, temples, military bases, and civilian homes. He emphasized that India’s advanced air defense systems had successfully neutralized Pakistani missiles and drones. The precision of India’s counter-strikes had left Pakistan with significant losses, leading Pakistan to seek de-escalation.

On May 10, 2025, after suffering considerable damage, Pakistan’s military reached out to India’s Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) and assured that it would cease all military aggression and terrorist activities against India. Modi confirmed that India had reviewed the situation and decided to temporarily suspend its counter-operations, but clarified that the suspension was not a conclusion. India would continue to monitor Pakistan’s actions and assess their compliance with their commitments.

The Prime Minister emphasized that India’s armed forces remain on high alert, ensuring national security. He stated that Operation Sindoor had set a new benchmark in India’s counter-terrorism policy and that it would serve as a key pillar of India’s future security strategy. He outlined three main principles of India’s security doctrine:

  1. Decisive Retaliation: Any terrorist attack on India will be met with a firm and resolute response, targeting terror hubs at their roots.

  2. No Tolerance for Nuclear Blackmail: India will not be intimidated by nuclear threats, and any safe havens operating under such pretexts will face precise strikes.

  3. No Distinction Between Terrorists and Their Sponsors: India will no longer treat terrorist leaders and governments that shelter them as separate entities.

Modi pointed out that during Operation Sindoor, Pakistan’s deep involvement in state-sponsored terrorism was exposed. Senior Pakistani military officials had openly attended the funerals of eliminated terrorists, a clear indication of Pakistan’s complicity.

The Prime Minister also reflected on India’s military capabilities, stating that the success of Operation Sindoor proved India’s superiority in both traditional and modern warfare. He highlighted the effectiveness of “Made in India” defense systems, which played a pivotal role in India’s military successes.

In a firm message to Pakistan, Modi warned that its continued support for terrorism would lead to its own downfall. He declared that Pakistan must dismantle its terror infrastructure if it seeks peace and survival. He further stated that terror and talks cannot coexist, terror and trade cannot run parallel, and blood and water cannot flow together.

Finally, addressing the global community, Modi reaffirmed India’s policy that any negotiations with Pakistan would be focused solely on terrorism and the issue of Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK). Reflecting on the teachings of Lord Buddha on Buddha Purnima, the Prime Minister stated that the path to peace must be guided by strength, and India would continue to stand strong in safeguarding its dignity and values.

Concluding his address, Prime Minister Modi once again saluted the valor of the Indian armed forces and expressed his deep respect for the courage and unity of the people of India.

US President Trump Ties Ceasefire to Trade, Urges India and Pakistan to Embrace Economic Cooperation

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, May 12, 2025, Kolkata :  Just before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address to the nation on Monday, US President Donald Trump warned India and Pakistan that if the conflict between the two countries does not stop, it could negatively impact business. In his statement, President Trump announced that the United States was ready to assist both nations following a ceasefire agreement, which he claimed his administration had helped broker.

However, Indian officials were quick to emphasize that the arrangement was negotiated exclusively between New Delhi and Islamabad, adhering to India’s long-standing position that all issues with Pakistan must be resolved bilaterally. “There is no decision to hold talks on any other issue at any other place,” said a senior Indian official, rejecting any suggestions of international facilitation or talks in a third country, as suggested by US Senator Marco Rubio.

Trump pointed out that trade was a significant reason behind the cessation of hostilities. “Trade is a big reason why they stopped fighting,” Trump stated during an event at the White House. He also claimed that US intervention had prevented a “bad nuclear war” between the two South Asian rivals after a series of clashes had brought them to the brink of conflict.

“We stopped a nuclear conflict. I think it could have been a bad nuclear war, millions of people could have been killed. So I’m very proud of that,” Trump told reporters, speaking from the White House.

In his address, Trump highlighted the critical role of his administration in mediating the ceasefire. “The US administration has mediated an immediate ceasefire between India and Pakistan. A terrible conflict has been stopped,” he said. He emphasized the nuclear capabilities of both countries, acknowledging the stakes involved in the ongoing tension. Trump expressed optimism that the ceasefire could be a permanent solution. “We said stop it. We can do a lot of trade with you. If you stop it, we can do trade. But if you don’t stop it, we will not do any trade with you,” he added.

The US President also noted that business interests were a driving factor behind the conflict’s resolution. “One of the big reasons behind the India-Pakistan war was business. The leaders of both India and Pakistan were steadfast on their side. America helped a lot in mediating this ceasefire,” Trump said.

President Trump reiterated that the United States was ready to assist both India and Pakistan in terms of trade, which he believed could further stabilize the region. “America was able to prevent a terrible nuclear conflict. It had the potential to become a nuclear war, which could have resulted in the death of millions of people,” Trump stated.

In his speech, Trump also thanked US Vice President JD Vance and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio for their roles in facilitating the India-Pakistan ceasefire agreement.

Last Saturday, India and Pakistan reached an agreement on a ceasefire. Following Trump’s announcement, Pakistan issued a direct statement, and Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed the ceasefire. On Sunday, President Trump took to social media, writing, “India and Pakistan have realized that it is time to stop the aggression. It had the potential to cause more death and destruction and the potential for the loss of millions of innocent civilians.”

South Asia Journalists Federation (SAJF) Formed to Strengthen Press Freedom in Region

KalimNews, Pokhara, Nepal, May 11, 2025: In a historic development for journalism in South Asia, the South Asia Journalists Federation (SAJF) was officially established today, marking a significant step toward uniting journalists across the region to confront critical challenges to press freedom and professional integrity. The formation ceremony, held at Niwas Hotel in Pokhara, Nepal, was a milestone in regional cooperation and media advocacy.

The SAJF was founded in alignment with the constitution of the Federation of Asia Pacific Journalists (FAPaJ), a regional body of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ). The federation comprises eight countries that are affiliated with the IFJ, including India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Afghanistan, Maldives, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka.

During the event, a new committee was formed to lead the federation’s efforts. Geetartha Pathak, from the Indian Journalists Union, was unanimously elected as President, while Shakeel Ahmed of the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) was appointed General Secretary. Other key office bearers include Siva Lamsal of Nepal Press Union (NPU) as Senior Vice President, Rashed Hadi of Afghanistan’s National Journalists Union (ANJU) as Vice President, and Khairuzzaman Kamal of Bangladesh Manabadhikar Sangbadik Forum as Treasurer. Representatives from Bhutan, Maldives, and Sri Lanka were inducted as executive body members.

The creation of the SAJF comes at a critical time for press freedom in South Asia, which is currently under unprecedented pressure. Recent years have witnessed a sharp decline in the region’s press freedom index, with numerous incidents of violence against journalists, legal harassment, and the imposition of severe charges on media professionals. Notably, the Bangladesh interim government has accused over 300 journalists of murder, further highlighting the precarious environment for media workers in the region.

In response to these alarming trends, the SAJF aims to serve as a robust monitoring and advocacy platform for protecting media freedom and safeguarding the rights of journalists. The federation will actively work to address critical issues, including promoting professional excellence, improving working conditions, and ensuring job security for journalists across South Asia.

“The establishment of the SAJF is not just a timely initiative—it is a necessity,” said Geetartha Pathak, President of SAJF. “Our mission is to support journalists in their fight for press freedom, to ensure their safety, and to uphold the values of free expression and journalistic integrity.”

The federation’s leaders are calling on governments, media organizations, and civil society to support their mission. “We urge all stakeholders to join us in creating an environment where journalists can perform their duties without fear of reprisal and contribute meaningfully to the democratic processes in our societies,” Pathak added.

With the launch of the SAJF, there is renewed hope for the protection and empowerment of media professionals across South Asia, a region where press freedom remains under constant threat.

Coastal Surveillance Intensified in South 24 Parganas Despite Ceasefire Between India and Pakistan

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, South 24 Parganas, May 12, 2025 : Despite the announcement of a ceasefire between India and Pakistan effective from the evening of May 10, heightened security measures continue to remain in place across various sensitive regions, including the Sundarbans in South 24 Parganas. While the immediate threat of military confrontation has eased, authorities remain on high alert, especially in the North and North-West frontier areas.

Amidst the ongoing ceasefire, enhanced vigilance has been observed in the waterways and coastal zones of the Sundarbans. In response to the tense geopolitical environment, joint patrol operations are being conducted by the Fraserganj police station and the Indian Coast Guard as part of Operation ‘Raksha Orange’. Surveillance activities are being carried out across rivers, estuaries, ferry piers, and key sea routes using the Fast Interceptor Boats (FIBs) stationed at Fraserganj.

Security forces have been instructed to interrogate any suspicious vessels or watercraft sighted in the region. All coastal police stations within the Sundarbans have been placed on high alert. Stretching over approximately 150 kilometers, the water boundary of the Sundarbans poses a potential risk for infiltration, prompting extensive deployment of BSF personnel along the riverine and forested zones.

The Indian Coast Guard is maintaining watch from floating border outposts in the Bay of Bengal, employing advanced surveillance tools including drones, sensors, fixed and mobile cameras, and night vision equipment. Regular round-the-clock patrolling is being carried out by both the Coast Guard and state police forces, especially in vulnerable stretches of the river and coastline.

In adherence to ongoing security protocols, a complete ban on fishing activities in rivers and the sea has been imposed. Fishermen have been instructed to refrain from using watercraft, and any vessel found operating is being thoroughly inspected.

The developments in South 24 Parganas are a part of the broader national preparedness, reflecting the unresolved tensions that persist despite diplomatic moves toward de-escalation.

Kalyan Banerjee Urges Swift Action for Release of Detained BSF Jawan Amid Ceasefire Tensions

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, May 12, 2025, Kolkata : Concerns have deepened over the fate of Border Security Force (BSF) jawan Purnam Kumar Sahu, who has remained in Pakistani custody since April 23 after inadvertently crossing the international border in Punjab. A resident of Rishra in West Bengal, Sahu was detained by Pakistan Rangers after allegedly straying across the border and has been held without release, despite diplomatic overtures and appeals.

Multiple efforts by Indian authorities to secure his release have so far failed, and the matter has drawn public and political attention. Trinamool Congress MP from Serampore, Kalyan Banerjee, expressed serious concern over the situation through his official social media handle, urging immediate action from both nations in light of the existing ceasefire. He called on authorities to prioritize the safe return of the jawan, stressing the emotional distress faced by the family.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee termed the situation as deeply distressing and stated that the state government is actively monitoring developments. She confirmed that MP Kalyan Banerjee has been maintaining regular contact with the jawan’s family and reassured that every possible step is being taken to facilitate his return. The jawan’s wife has formally requested a meeting with the Chief Minister, seeking her direct intervention in the matter.

The situation has become more sensitive following a recent incident along the international border in Rajasthan. A Pakistani Ranger was apprehended by the BSF in the Sri Ganganagar sector for allegedly attempting to infiltrate into Indian territory. Security sources reported that the individual was observed crossing into Indian soil under suspicious circumstances. BSF personnel responded swiftly, detaining the man before he could proceed further. Initial assessments indicate that he was unarmed and did not resist arrest.

The detained Pakistani national is currently under interrogation, with intelligence agencies working to verify his identity and possible intent. While officials have refrained from releasing further details due to the ongoing investigation, internal sources suggest the possibility of reconnaissance activity or other hostile motives is being explored seriously.

The arrest has triggered increased security measures along the border, with patrolling and surveillance operations significantly ramped up, particularly during nighttime. Security forces have been placed on high alert, with senior commanders instructed to remain vigilant amid heightened tensions.

This latest incident follows closely on the heels of the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed 26 lives, further straining relations between the two countries. Although a formal ceasefire is in place, recent developments have cast uncertainty over its stability, especially as nightfall reportedly saw renewed movements from the Pakistani side.

As the diplomatic silence continues, the family of Purnam Kumar Sahu waits in anxiety, clinging to hope that efforts at the national and state levels will ensure his safe and timely return. The situation remains tense but under close watch.

Four Arrested with Illegal Firearms Near Kolkata Airport; STF Recovers Arms from Bihar-Origin Smuggling Network

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, May 10, 2025, Kolkata :In a significant breakthrough against illegal arms trafficking, the Special Task Force (STF) of the West Bengal Police arrested four individuals and seized a large cache of weapons during a late-night operation on April 10 in Narayanpur, Haroa in North 24 Pargana within northern suburbs near Kolkata Airport. Acting on specific intelligence, the STF intercepted a white Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire suspected of transporting illegal firearms in the Narayanpur-Haroa belt of North 24 Parganas district.

The operation, executed swiftly and without resistance, led to the arrest of four suspects identified as Amirul Mondal (33), Habil Mollah (40), Abu Sahid Gazi (26), and Giyasuddin Gazi (24)—all residents of Haroa. According to officials, the accused were en route to deliver the weapons to criminal groups in the region.

A thorough search of the vehicle revealed a concealed bag containing a substantial cache of arms. The recovered items include a single-barrel long firearm, a double-barrel breech-loading (DBBL) gun, and an improvised 7 mm semi-automatic pistol, along with two empty magazines. Additionally, authorities seized six rounds of 12 bore live ammunition and eleven rounds of 7.65 mm ammunition.

Investigators suspect that the seized weapons may have originated from Munger, Bihar—a region known for the illicit manufacture of firearms. The car and all recovered items have been seized as evidence, and a formal case has been registered at Haroa Police Station. Preliminary interrogation suggests the accused may be part of a wider trafficking network operating across district and state boundaries.

The STF, in coordination with district police, is now conducting follow-up operations to trace the full extent of the arms network, including suppliers and intended recipients. Officials have also stepped up surveillance efforts in high-risk areas and intensified intelligence gathering to prevent further attempts at arms smuggling.

This successful operation reflects the increasing vigilance of security agencies in West Bengal and their commitment to curbing the proliferation of illegal weapons in the state.

G7 Nations Condemn Pahalgam Attack, Urge Restraint and Dialogue Amid Rising India-Pakistan Tensions

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, May 10, 2025, Kolkata : The Group of Seven (G7) countries has strongly condemned the deadly terrorist attack that took place on April 22 in the Baisaran area of Pahalgam, where 26 civilians were killed. The attack was carried out by militants who appeared to have specifically targeted the victims based on their identities. The Resistance Front (TRF), an affiliate of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, has claimed responsibility. India has directly accused Pakistan of being involved in the assault, a claim that has further intensified tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.

In a joint statement released on May 9, the Foreign Ministers of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the High Representative of the European Union unequivocally condemned the Pahalgam attack. The statement urged both India and Pakistan to exercise maximum restraint, stressing the need for immediate de-escalation and a return to dialogue. “We continue to monitor events closely and express our support for a swift and lasting diplomatic resolution,” the statement read, highlighting the G7’s concern for regional stability and the safety of civilians on both sides.

Following the April 22 incident, India conducted precision military strikes on May 7, targeting suspected terror launchpads in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). These operations were in direct retaliation for the Pahalgam killings. In response, Pakistan has launched a series of unprovoked attacks, including missile and drone strikes, targeting multiple locations across India from Jammu and Kashmir to Gujarat. These actions have raised alarm over escalating conflict.

The Indian Ministry of Defence confirmed that attempts to strike key installations such as airports and airbases have been thwarted, with Indian forces maintaining heightened alertness and using advanced counter-drone technologies. Indian armed forces reported that all aerial threats are being closely monitored and neutralized when necessary.

On the night of May 9, Pakistan reportedly deployed hundreds of armed drones, many of Turkish origin, and allegedly used civilian aircraft as cover to target Indian military installations. In retaliation, India launched strikes on Islamabad’s air defence systems at four strategic sites, successfully disabling one of them.

Amid the rapid escalation, the G7 reiterated the importance of maintaining peace and avoiding any further military confrontation that could endanger the region’s stability. The group emphasized its commitment to a peaceful resolution through direct communication and diplomacy between India and Pakistan.

The situation remains tense, with both nations on high alert and the international community closely monitoring developments.
