Naina Subba from Arunachal Pradesh Crowned Sikkim Miss Limbu 2024

Nanda Kirati Dewan, KalimNews, 22 September 2024, Gangtok (Sikkim) : Naina Subba from Arunachal Pradesh was crowned Sikkim Miss Limbu Season 3 on Sunday during a glittering traditional cultural and talent show in Gangtok. The grand finale of Miss Limbu Season 3 and Mr. Limbu Season 1 was held at Manan Kendra, in the gracious presence of Chief Guest, Cabinet Minister of Sikkim, Shri Bhim Hang Limboo, along with Sikkim Lok Sabha MP Dr. Indra Hang Subba, and Maneybung Dentam constituency MLA Sudesh Kumar Subba as Guests of Honour. In their addresses, they encouraged the youth to connect with their communities, stay rooted in their traditions, and explore their cultural heritage.

Contestants from all districts of Sikkim, as well as from West Bengal, Assam, and Arunachal Pradesh, participated in the prestigious event. Naina Subba from Arunachal Pradesh won the Miss Limbu title, while Rahul Limboo from Dikchu, East Sikkim, was crowned Mr. Limbu Season 1.

Organiser and CEO of Sikkim Miss Limbu Organisation, Binita Mabo Limbu, congratulated the 2024 winners, saying, “Naina Subba is blessed with beauty, talent, and grace. She truly shone throughout the competition and deservedly won the crown. We are confident she will continue to excel in her career as an entertainer and achieve brilliance in academics too.”

In addition, Samnima Limbu from Bhaluthang and Avril Limbu from Simboley, both from West Sikkim, were crowned 1st and 2nd Runners Up, respectively.

Speaking to this correspondent, Sikkim Miss Limbu 2024 Naina Subba Tungbahwngphe expressed her gratitude, saying, “I am indebted to my roots, our ancestors, and my immediate family, especially my Yuma (grandmother), who is the sole source of my energy. I must acknowledge and thank Taaghera Ningwaphumaang, our Yumaism goddess, for showering her blessings on me.”

She added, “Sikkim Miss Limbu 2024 was never my destination but a milestone in my journey of learning about our rich Yakthung/Limbu culture and traditions. Limbu folk tales, songs, and Himalayan raw music have always been my passions. I am blessed to have met so many humble souls on this journey who have helped me explore this world. The Limboo Mahasabha in Assam provided me with a platform to perform, and the Sikkim Miss Limbu Organisation gave me the space to spread my wings. Coming from a small hamlet, Wakro Tezu in Arunachal Pradesh, with a negligible number of Limbus, I found a playground to learn and grow in the neighboring Tinsukia district of Assam.”

Naina also expressed her gratitude to the Yakthung community of Assam, saying, “A huge hug and a big thank you to the Yakthungs of Assam for their immense support in my cultural journey. I assure myself that this connection will continue. I aim to diversify my content creation on similar topics besides music videos, documentaries, and singing, all alongside my academic pursuits.”

According to sources, Mandal, who spent 18 months in Tihar Jail, is eager to leave the capital as soon as possible, expressing a desire for security only after stepping out of Tihar.

There is no indication that the Delhi Police will provide security for Mandal, which has led to discussions about arranging private security guards to ensure his safe passage. Sources also reveal that Mandal does not wish to stay in Delhi any longer than necessary after his release.

Flight arrangements are being made for Mandal’s return to Kolkata on Monday night. It is expected that he will travel directly from Tihar to Delhi airport, under private security, before being handed over to the state police for further protection upon his arrival in Kolkata.

There are speculations that Anubrata’s daughter, Sukanya Mandal, who was also recently granted bail, may accompany him on the return journey. Sukanya has reportedly been staying at a confidential location in Delhi since her release.

During his time in Tihar, Anubrata Mandal was granted court-ordered medical treatment at several public and private hospitals in Delhi.

KalimNews, 21 September 2024, Kalimpong: In an emotional reunion, former Indian Army soldier Urgen Tamang arrived home in Chhibo Busty, Ward No. 9 of Kalimpong, on September 21, 2024, after enduring 182 days of uncertainty and distress in Russia. His arrival at Bagdogra Airport was met with tears of joy from his wife, Ambika Tamang, and their two children.

“I witnessed many Indians perish in the conflict. Each day was a nightmare; I couldn’t eat or sleep. It’s hard to believe I’m finally home,” Tamang recounted, visibly shaken yet grateful for his safe return from the war zone. “I thank God for bringing me back to my family.”

Urgen’s return was made possible largely due to the relentless efforts of Rabi Pradhan, Chairman of the Kalimpong Municipality’s Board of Administrators. Pradhan, who had been in constant contact with Urgen during his ordeal, was present at the airport to welcome him back, accompanied by family and well-wishers.

Pradhan revealed the harrowing details of Tamang’s experience: “He spent five and a half months in the war zone after being misled by an agent who promised him a job as a helper in Russia. Instead, he was drafted into the Russian Army and sent to fight in Ukraine without any prior military experience.”

The breakthrough in Tamang’s case came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised the issue during his visit to Russia in July 2024, directly discussing the release of Indians caught in the conflict with President Vladimir Putin. Following this, Pradhan reminded the Indian embassy in Moscow about Urgen’s plight on September 10, leading to his release from Russian authorities on September 17.

In a viral video posted on March 23, 2024, Tamang detailed his grim situation from the war front, pleading for assistance from Indian authorities. He highlighted the dangers faced by him and his comrades, stating that 13 out of 15 non-Russian soldiers in his unit were killed during combat.

Upon his return, Tamang expressed deep gratitude to Indian authorities, the embassy, Rabi Pradhan, and various NGOs for their unwavering support. He shared his struggles with despair during his captivity and how Pradhan’s encouragement fueled his hope for rescue.

Tamang, who served in the Indian Army for 18 years before retiring in 2018, revealed that he had been misled by an agent, Bishnu Pokhrel from Nepal, who promised him a lucrative job in Russia. Instead, he found himself facing the horrors of war, undergoing basic training before being sent to the front lines.

Rabi Pradhan thanked all those involved in Urgen’s rescue, including Raja Pathan of the Indian embassy in Moscow, who facilitated communications between the governments. He confirmed that Urgen’s military contract was officially terminated on September 13, allowing him to return home.
 
As Tamang reunited with his family, he expressed immense relief and joy, grateful for the support that ultimately brought him back to safety.

Workplace harassment: Women’s body writes to CM

MP, 21 Sept 2024, KOLKATA: In the wake of the recent rape and murder of a young doctor at RG Kar Hospital, the Women’s Forum for Screen Workers (WFSW+), a collective of women, sexual and gender minorities working as actors, technicians and crew members in the Bengali entertainment industry, has requested Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for the formation of an independent committee to investigate workplace harassment and gender-based violence. 

In an official letter to the CM on Saturday, WFSW+ has sought the CM’s help to establish this committee to ensure safety and dignity for women in the workplace. 
The forum includes the likes of Aparna Sen, Bidipta Chakraborty, Sudipta Chakraborty, Paoli Dam, Sohini Sarkar, Swastika Mukherjee, Daminee Benny Basu, Rituparna Sengupta, Sohini Sengupta, and others. 
Outlining a charter of demands, the forum highlighted the gaps in workplace safety, the lack of functional grievance redressal system and the exploitation that many women workers face silently in the Bengali entertainment industry. 
The forum mentioned how the government is already planning to form such a committee and they fully support the endeavour. In fact, actress Ritabhari Chakraborty had met the chief minister at Nabanna and the CM promised the formation of such a committee a few weeks ago. 
The women’s forum proposed that the committee should investigate sexual abuse and harassment, review compliance with the PoSH Act 2013 in all production companies, studios and other screen entertainment industry workplace. 
The forum also wants the minors working in the industry are protected as per the POSCO Act, 2012. 
“We insist that this independent committee be composed of genders sensitize legal experts, industry representatives, human rights activists, mental health experts, and government officials who can work together to address these pressing issues and create a safer more equitable work environment,” the letter mentioned.

However, they clarified that not all services would be reinstated immediately.

The group has decided to remove their sit-in demonstration in front of the Health Building, effective Friday. A procession is scheduled for the same day, which will march from Health Bhavan to the CBI office at the CGO complex at 3 PM. After this event, the junior doctors will return to their respective medical colleges and hospitals.


Despite this partial resumption of services, the junior doctors have issued a stern warning to the state government. They emphasize that if their demands regarding workplace safety and the culture of threats are not addressed, they will halt all work entirely. The doctors have set a deadline of seven days for the government to respond to their concerns. “Our flexible attitude should not be perceived as weakness,” they cautioned.

This year, the committee has chosen to showcase a unique representation of the mural in the form of a decagon, highlighting the stark parallels between the turmoil of the Spanish Civil War and today’s world.


Guernica, painted in response to the bombing of the Basque town during the Spanish Civil War in April 1937, is renowned for its haunting imagery, including a woman holding a dead child and a bull symbolizing brutality and chaos. The monochromatic work captures the devastation and suffering caused by conflict, resonating deeply with contemporary issues of violence and despair.


In light of these themes, the committee’s artistic endeavor aims to provoke thought and reflection during the upcoming Durga Puja celebrations. Biswajit Ghosh, a sculptor from North Bengal, explained that the idol of Goddess Durga is being crafted in a studio using clay coated on wood and plywood. “We are merging Picasso’s purist ideals with traditional Indian art to comment on the state of the world,” Ghosh stated.
