Trinamool Congress Makes Special Arrangements for State Convention, Ensures Broad Participation

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, February 26, 2025, Kolkata :  As the 26th assembly elections approach, the Trinamool Congress is taking significant measures to ensure that its booth-level party workers can attend the state convention and watch the speech of leader Mamata Banerjee at the Netaji Indoor Stadium, which will outline the party’s overall strategy. The state convention, set for Thursday, February 27, will host over 19 thousand delegates, including the party’s MPs, public representatives from the panchayat level, and district-level leadership from all branch organizations.

To facilitate the participation of workers who cannot attend in person, more than 20 giant screens will be set up around the Netaji Indoor Stadium and the Khudiram Anushilan Kendra. These screens will broadcast Mamata Banerjee’s speech directly to workers across the city and district offices of the Trinamool Congress. The conference will begin at 11 am and conclude at noon with the leader’s speech, with the goal of ensuring delegates from distant districts can return home the same day.

Delegates from various districts began arriving in Kolkata on Wednesday, where they are reaching out to Trinamool Bhavan to collect their delegate cards. On Tuesday, state leadership, including state president Subrata Bakshi, visited Netaji Indoor Stadium to finalize the seating arrangements for the main stage and representatives from various levels of the party. Bakshi also designated the seating for the state leadership, including MPs, MLAs, district presidents, and branch organization leaders.

In addition to the previously listed delegates, instructions have been sent to district presidents to include members from the SC and OBC cells, ST cells, minority cells, farmers and agricultural laborers cells, as well as the Trinamool Youth, Women’s, and INTTUC presidents of Kolkata. Furthermore, members of the state committees of the Trinamool Youth Congress, Trinamool Mahila Congress, State Education Cell, INTTUC, SC-ST-OBC, Kisan Khet Majur, Minority Cell, Media Cell, and IT Cell will also be able to access the indoor venue as representatives. This extensive participation is aimed at unifying the party’s various branches and ensuring that all members are informed and involved in the party’s ongoing strategy.

Trinamool Grapples with Internal Factionalism Ahead of 2026 Assembly Elections

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, February 23, 2025, Kolkata: With the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections approaching, all political parties, including the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), have begun internal restructuring to strengthen their organizational framework. However, factional conflicts within the TMC have emerged as a significant challenge alongside opposition pressure. Many party leaders have acknowledged that these internal disputes could impact the party’s performance in the upcoming elections. In response, the leadership has intensified efforts to address factionalism at the district level well in advance of the polls.

The process of selecting leaders and workers to ensure party discipline and cohesion has already begun, aiming to prevent internal sabotage during the elections. The urgency of this issue was underscored by Arup Chakraborty, the TMC Member of Parliament from Bankura and the party’s organizational district president in the region. While addressing a meeting of the Women’s Trinamool in Bikna, Bankura, Chakraborty publicly warned against disloyal elements within the party ranks.

“There are many dishonest individuals and traitors who might attempt to betray the party during the elections while remaining under the umbrella of Trinamool,” he stated. Emphasizing party unity, he further cautioned, “Those who create discord against Jora Phool (the party symbol) before the elections will find themselves isolated in their villages.”

Reiterating his stance, Chakraborty later remarked, “If you want to build a party, you have to commit to one party. We do not need workers who remain with the TMC throughout the year but switch allegiance if they do not receive a ticket during elections. The process of identifying such elements has already begun.” His statements signal a decisive move by the TMC to ensure loyalty within its ranks as it prepares for the electoral battle.

Meanwhile, the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has strongly criticized the TMC’s approach, highlighting alleged internal conflicts within the ruling party. Former Union Minister Subhash Sarkar claimed that disputes over financial matters have severely undermined trust among TMC workers. He also took a dig at the decision to isolate dissenting members, suggesting that the infighting within the TMC has reached unprecedented levels.

As West Bengal heads toward the crucial 2026 assembly elections, the political landscape remains charged. The TMC faces the dual challenge of resolving its internal rifts while countering opposition attacks. How effectively the party manages these issues will play a crucial role in shaping its electoral prospects in the coming months.

Trinamool Strengthens Social Media Efforts Ahead of 2026 Assembly Elections

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, February 23, 2025, Kolkata :  With the 2026 assembly elections approaching, the ruling Trinamool Congress has intensified its social media efforts to shape its electoral strategy. Speculation has arisen regarding Trinamool’s reliance on social media campaigns and whether it is shifting focus from AIPAC to alternative organizations for digital outreach. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a counter-attack, questioning Trinamool’s evolving digital strategy.

To lay out a structured approach for the upcoming elections, Habra Assembly MLA Jyotipriya Mallick convened an emergency meeting with an organization called FAM at a function house in the Habra Hijal Pukur area on Sunday. This organization has been tasked with promoting Trinamool’s development initiatives across social media platforms. The effort aims to strengthen the party’s presence in the digital space and counter misinformation while engaging with voters effectively.

FAM will operate in 24 wards of Habra Municipality, with five Trinamool workers from each ward collaborating with the organization to enhance the party’s digital reach. This initiative marks an intensified effort by Trinamool to establish a structured online campaign ahead of the assembly elections. The ruling party is taking proactive steps to ensure that its achievements and initiatives are effectively communicated to the public while addressing concerns over misleading narratives circulating on social media.

Following the meeting, MLA Jyotipriya Mallick emphasized that this organization would extend its activities across various parts of the district. The move underscores Trinamool’s commitment to leveraging digital platforms for voter engagement and ensuring that its political messaging reaches a broader audience in a strategic and coordinated manner.

Concerns Over Fake Voter Surge in West Bengal Prompt Government Action

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, February 23, 2025, Kolkata :  Concerns over fake voters have emerged in West Bengal, following previous reports of similar issues in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. Authorities have noted an unexpected surge in voter numbers across multiple panchayat areas, raising suspicions of electoral malpractice. In response to a complaint from the Chief Minister, Nabanna has issued stringent directives to rectify voter lists and ensure accuracy in the electoral rolls. The state’s Chief Secretary, Manoj Pant, has ordered District Magistrates to remain vigilant and take necessary measures to prevent fraudulent voter registrations.

The Uttar Pradesh administration is also under pressure regarding this issue. On Saturday, the Chief Secretary convened a virtual meeting with District Magistrates from all districts and secretaries of various departments to address the matter. Officials have been instructed to meticulously verify all voter applications. In cases where an unusual surge in voter card applications is observed within a specific area, additional scrutiny must be conducted to rule out any irregularities.

The controversy has fueled political tensions between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Trinamool Congress (TMC), with both parties accusing each other of electoral fraud. The BJP claims that TMC is orchestrating the influx of minority voters from Bangladesh to manipulate voter demographics, whereas TMC alleges that BJP is bringing in fraudulent voters from Bihar to gain an electoral advantage.

According to sources, authorities have already identified some fraudulent voters. A particularly suspicious case was discovered in the Champahati panchayat of Baruipur. During the last Lok Sabha elections, the number of registered voters in the area ranged from 18,500 to 19,000. However, recent data indicates a sharp increase, with the voter count reaching 22,400. This unexpected rise has raised serious concerns, prompting Nabanna to issue an urgent warning and implement corrective measures to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process.

Shuvendu Adhikari’s Frequent Visits to Bhabanipur Spark Political Speculation

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, February 23, 2025, Kolkata : The political landscape of West Bengal is abuzz with speculation regarding BJP leader and Nandigram MLA Shuvendu Adhikari’s increasing focus on Bhabanipur. His repeated visits, meetings, processions, and rallies in the constituency have raised questions about his political strategy and future electoral plans.

On Sunday, Adhikari attended the ‘Mann Ki Baat’ program in the Theater Road area of the Bhabanipur Assembly constituency. His continuous presence in the region has led political analysts to believe that he may have a strategic interest beyond his current constituency. Adhikari has previously stated that contesting from Bhabanipur would be more favorable for him compared to Nandigram, citing the significant presence of non-Bengali voters in the area.

His recent activities include leading a procession in the Rash Behari-Tollygunge area, adjacent to Bhabanipur, in protest against alleged attacks on party workers. Furthermore, he raised the issue of Bhabanipur during a speech at the Assembly gates, urging Hindu voters to unite and participate actively in the political process.

Will Shuvendu contest from Bhabanipur constituency in 2026? This question is also circulating in the political circles. Although the opposition leader has not explicitly stated that he will contest from Bhabanipur, he has hinted at an interest in Mamata Banerjee’s constituency. At one time, Shuvendu primarily held 90 to 95 percent of his programs in Nandigram, occasionally conducting events outside. Regarding this, Shuvendu remarked, “We were holding a procession. In front of Taj Bengal and the Animal Hospital. There were no Trinamool people there. I came here and saw the reading room of the National Library. I had tea and snacks. For me, Bhabanipur is much easier than Nandigram.”

Adhikari’s repeated engagements in Bhabanipur have led to speculation about whether he intends to contest from this key constituency in the future. Political circles are closely watching his moves, as his potential candidature from Bhabanipur could significantly impact the state’s political dynamics. However, no official announcement has been made regarding his electoral plans, leaving room for further conjecture and debate within West Bengal’s political corridors.

Prashant Kishor Calls for Reform in Election Commission Appointment Process, Questions Credibility Amid Opposition Allegations

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, February 22, 2025, Kolkata :  Amid growing allegations of bias against the Election Commission, Jan Suraj Party chief Prashant Kishor has demanded a reform in the appointment process of the Election Commission to restore its credibility. Kishor’s remarks came today in response to recent criticisms and concerns raised by opposition parties regarding the impartiality of the Election Commission, especially after the recent appointment of an Election Commissioner.

Speaking to reporters, Kishor highlighted a change in the law regarding the Election Commissioner’s appointment, which he believes undermines the credibility of the process. He stated, “The Supreme Court had previously ordered that the Chief Justice should be included in the appointment committee. However, Modi has changed the law on this issue. If two out of the three members of the appointment committee are Narendra Modi and Amit Shah, the process is questionable, especially since Rahul Gandhi is not the third person.”

This statement comes in the wake of mounting allegations from the opposition about the Election Commission’s bias, with some questioning the credibility of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). Kishor addressed this concern, acknowledging that the impartiality of the Election Commissioner could indeed come under scrutiny due to the questionable nature of the appointment process. He suggested that the inclusion of the Chief Justice in the committee would have safeguarded the Commission’s credibility.

Kishor also commented on the ongoing debate about the integrity of EVMs, asserting, “I am not the kind of person to complain about rigging in EVMs. However, those who are making these complaints should be honest in their statements. When you win, the EVMs are right, and when you lose, the cards in the EVMs are silent. If there is doubt about the EVMs, then those who complain should boycott the elections.”

His comments reflect the growing concerns within the political landscape about the perceived bias and fairness of the electoral process. Kishor’s call for a change in the election process and appointment procedures aims to restore public confidence in the integrity of the system.

Mamata Banerjee and Leader of Opposition Exchange Sharp Attacks in Assembly Amid Growing Tensions

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, February 20, 2025, Kolkata :  The West Bengal Assembly witnessed a heated confrontation between Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Leader of the Opposition as both leaders launched direct attacks on each other, plunging the session into chaos.

The dispute began when Mamata Banerjee responded to accusations made by the opposition, questioning her alleged ties with terrorists. “After doing so much work, I have to hear that I have links with the terrorists of Jammu and Kashmir? Do I have links with the terrorists of Bangladesh? Without knowing it, I am being told that I am a terrorist,” Mamata said, expressing her frustration over the allegations.

Her comments sparked a strong reaction from Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLAs, who raised slogans in support of the Chief Minister. Mamata, in her defense, announced that she would be writing a letter to the Prime Minister to report the language used by the Leader of the Opposition. This move intensified the stir within the Assembly, adding fuel to the already tense atmosphere.

The Chief Minister further challenged the Leader of the Opposition, saying, “I will resign as Chief Minister if anyone can prove that I am a terrorist.” She also launched a scathing attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its leaders, including Subhendu Adhikari, accusing them of exaggerating Hindutva ideals for political gain. “I am telling those who are mocking me about Hinduism, I am also the daughter of a Brahmin family,” she asserted, defending her Hindu identity.

Targeting the BJP once again, Mamata continued, “They call me Muslim League, but you take the help of the Muslim League to win elections. Should I expose that? You are doing so much slander in the name of religion, if one day they call for a movement, will you be able to handle it?”

The argument took a further turn when Mamata responded to recent incidents in Bengal regarding Saraswati Puja celebrations. While she claimed that Saraswati Puja was celebrated widely across the state in every home, school, club, and neighborhood, she acknowledged that two pujas had been held at Yogesh Chandra Chowdhury Day College and Yogesh Chandra Law College under court orders, a statement that raised questions and provoked further debate.

As the war of words escalated, the Assembly session was marked by heightened tensions and an apparent breakdown in communication between the ruling party and opposition. The episode reflects the deepening political divide in West Bengal as Mamata Banerjee continues to face growing criticism from opposition parties, particularly the BJP, in the lead-up to upcoming elections.

Controversy Erupts Over Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s ‘Mrityukumbh’ Remark on Mahakumbh

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, February 20, 2025, Kolkata :  Tensions have risen following West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s controversial statement in the state assembly, where she referred to the ongoing Mahakumbh as ‘Mrityukumbh’ (Death Festival). This remark has sparked widespread protests, with accusations of disrespecting religious traditions and triggering heated debates about the state’s handling of the massive religious event.

According to official estimates, approximately 53 crore people were expected to bathe in the sacred Triveni Sangam as part of the Mahakumbh. As of now, about 50 crore pilgrims have already participated in the ritual, which has unfortunately been marred by numerous casualties. Despite the tragic loss of life, the Chief Minister’s remarks have intensified the controversy surrounding the event.

In the assembly, Mamata Banerjee expressed her anger at the ongoing disaster, denouncing the Mahakumbh in strong terms. Her use of the term ‘Mrityukumbh’ triggered an uproar, with opposition parties and religious groups immediately voicing their outrage. The situation escalated further on Tuesday when members of the ABVP (Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad) gathered outside the assembly gate to protest against the Chief Minister’s statement. This led to a standoff with the police, who had to intervene to control the protestors. Approximately fifteen ABVP supporters were detained and taken to Lalbazar police station.

The protests have extended beyond student groups, with Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan also joining the criticism. He condemned Banerjee’s words, stating, “Insulting Sanatan Dharma has become Mamata Banerjee’s nature. Indian culture, which has flowed like the waters of the Ganges for thousands of years, should be respected by all. Those who attack our culture only harm themselves.” Many believe that the Chief Minister’s remarks were an attempt to appease Muslim communities, with some accusing her of repeatedly targeting Hindu religious practices.

As the protests continue to unfold, the debate over the handling of Mahakumbh and the Chief Minister’s controversial statement shows no signs of abating. The political and social ramifications of this dispute are expected to play out in the coming days, with various factions preparing to rally support for their respective positions.

Suvendu Adhikari Warns of Bangladesh Merging with Pakistan Amid Rising Religious Persecution

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, Kolkata, February 19, 2025 : In a recent address at the ‘Bangladesh in Crisis’ event, organized by the ‘Khola Hawa’ organization at the ABC Auditorium, Kolkata, Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari, expressed serious concerns over the growing political and religious tensions in neighboring Bangladesh.

Adhikari pointed out the alarming rise of radical fundamentalist forces in Bangladesh, stating that the current political climate, shaped by the pro-Pakistan BNP (Bangladesh Nationalist Party) and radical elements, could lead to severe consequences for both the country and the region. He went as far as to suggest that Bangladesh could merge with Pakistan within the next six months due to its increasing shift toward Pakistan’s influence.

At the heart of Adhikari’s remarks was the ongoing persecution of Hindus in Bangladesh. Drawing from his personal family history, Adhikari detailed how his mother, Mrs. Gayatri Bhattacharya, was forced to flee Bangladesh in 1959 due to religious discrimination. “My family, like many others, was compelled to leave their homeland simply because of their Hindu faith,” he said.

Adhikari’s address painted a grim picture of the situation for religious minorities in Bangladesh. He highlighted the dangers faced by Hindus, who are being targeted both for their religion and their political affiliations, particularly those linked to the ruling Awami League. He appealed to the Indian government to ensure that refugees fleeing such persecution are not treated harshly. “As an Indian citizen, I urge the Prime Minister to ensure that Hindus and others fleeing Bangladesh for their beliefs are not imprisoned,” he said.

In a wider context, Adhikari’s comments reflect growing concerns about the future of Bangladesh’s political landscape, which has seen a rise in radicalism. His warning about a potential merger with Pakistan underscores the shifting dynamics and the increasing estrangement from India, which could further destabilize the region.

As the situation in Bangladesh continues to evolve, the plight of religious minorities remains a critical issue that could affect relations between India and its neighboring country.

BJP Leader Bharati Ghosh Reacts Strongly After Name Appears in CBI Chargesheet

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, February 15, 2025, Kolkata :  BJP leader Bharati Ghosh has strongly refuted allegations after her name appeared in a CBI chargesheet related to recruitment corruption. Once a close confidante of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during her tenure as Superintendent of Police in Paschim Medinipur, Bharati later joined the BJP. The CBI claims that she recommended a list of four individuals for employment, along with Trinamool Congress leaders Dibyendu Adhikari and Mamata Thakur.

In response to the allegations, Bharati Ghosh dismissed the claims as an attempt to tarnish her reputation, stating, “If my name has surfaced, call me, speak to me. I have always worked within the law, and I am not afraid of anyone.” She expressed frustration that her efforts to help individuals in need were now being scrutinized and misrepresented.

The CBI’s chargesheet has intensified political tensions, with the central agency highlighting the involvement of both BJP and Trinamool leaders in alleged recruitment malpractice. The investigation continues to unfold, with further developments expected as the case progresses.

Controversy Erupts in Bengal BJP Over Jagannath Chatterjee’s Facebook Post

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, February 15, 2025, Kolkata : A deep controversy has erupted within the Bengal BJP following a Facebook post by party member Jagannath Chatterjee. In his post, he highlighted recommendations made by various party leaders and workers for appointments to the School Service Commission, prominently featuring BJP leader Dibyendu Adhikari, brother of opposition leader Subhendu Adhikari. The revelation has triggered internal strife within the party, further escalating tensions among its members.

Chatterjee’s post also included the name of Bharati Ghosh, adding to the uproar. The disclosure led to widespread unrest in the Bengal BJP, and despite state general secretary’s efforts to diffuse the situation by deleting the post, the internal discord remains unresolved.

Political analysts suggest that this incident may be part of a larger strategy to undermine Subhendu Adhikari and diminish his family’s political influence. In response, Subhendu reacted strongly from Delhi, expressing his discontent over the matter. Following intervention from the central leadership, Jagannath Chatterjee ultimately removed the contentious post.

However, the controversy did not end there. Hindu Samhati president Shantanu Sinha reposted the content, claiming that the original post was intentionally directed at Subhendu. This has further fueled speculation within BJP circles about a growing trust deficit and factionalism within the party.

The situation remains volatile, with party insiders closely watching how the leadership navigates this internal conflict while maintaining political stability in the state.

Survey Shows Growing Trust in Mamata Banerjee, TMC Poised for Gains in Upcoming Elections

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, February 14, 2025, Kolkata : According to a recent survey by the India Today group, trust in West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is on the rise, with a significant portion of the population expressing a desire to see her become the country’s Prime Minister in the near future. The survey, which was conducted rigorously across the country, reveals that Banerjee’s popularity has surged, particularly among those who admire her leadership skills and administrative experience.

The survey also highlights a promising outlook for her party, the Trinamool Congress (TMC), in the upcoming national elections. The report suggests that if the Lok Sabha elections were held today, the TMC would increase its seat count in Bengal from 29 to 30, while the BJP would not gain a single seat, remaining stuck at 12. In contrast, both the Congress and the CPM are expected to face further setbacks, with their positions in the state continuing to deteriorate.

The survey, conducted in August 2024 among prominent politicians, showed that Mamata Banerjee’s popularity has nearly doubled by the 2025 survey. This growing support indicates that many people in Bengal, and perhaps beyond, believe she is the leader with the experience and political acumen needed to lead the nation.

With Trinamool Congress currently holding 30 seats in the Lok Sabha, it is seen as only a matter of time before the party secures a dominant position in Bengal once again. Looking ahead to the 2026 assembly elections, many political analysts predict that the TMC could achieve a two-thirds majority in the state legislature, further solidifying Mamata Banerjee’s political influence in Bengal and across the country.

In stark contrast, the BJP is reportedly on a downward trajectory, with its seat count in Bengal expected to decline in the coming years. The survey results suggest that the political landscape in the state may continue to shift in favor of Mamata Banerjee and the TMC as her influence and trust among the people grow.

Calcutta High Court Allows RSS Rally in Burdwan with condition, Rejects State’s Objection

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, February 14, 2025, Kolkata : In a significant legal development, the Calcutta High Court has overruled the West Bengal government’s objection and granted permission for the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) rally to be held in Burdwan on February 16, 2025. The rally, which is expected to feature RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, had faced opposition from the Mamata Banerjee-led state government, but the court’s decision has paved the way for the event.

RSS had approached the court seeking permission after the state government refused to allow the rally. During the proceedings, the petitioner’s lawyer, Debashis Chowdhury, argued that the event would take place in a small area within a large venue, far from any educational institutions or residential zones. He pointed out that the rally would run from 11:00 am to 12:15 pm and asserted that the claims regarding noise disturbance, especially concerning the use of microphones, were unfounded. The lawyer further argued that the event did not require state permission for this location, emphasizing the absence of any nearby schools or residential areas.

In response, Advocate General Kishore Dutta, representing the state, contended that there were three schools in the area, and the state had issued a notification banning the use of microphones or sound systems from three days before the secondary and higher secondary exams to prevent any disruption. This notification, issued in June of the previous year, was set to come into effect from February 12, 2025, and the government argued that the RSS had deliberately scheduled its program during this period.

After considering the arguments from both sides, the court ruled in favor of the RSS, allowing the rally to proceed on the scheduled date and time. However, the court issued a condition that the event must be conducted in a way that does not cause inconvenience to the exam candidates, stressing that the program should be carried out responsibly without any disturbance.

India and US Pledge to Double Trade by 2030 Following Modi-Trump Meeting

Baby Chakraborty, Delhi, February 14, 2025 : In a significant development during a three-day visit by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the United States, both leaders committed to doubling the trade between India and the US by 2030. The bilateral discussions, which took place amid a series of geopolitical and economic topics, have focused heavily on strengthening economic ties between the two nations.

Modi’s visit, while also drawing attention for his previous remarks on US President Donald Trump’s controversial immigration policies, has now been overshadowed by the trade and defense agreements announced. At a press conference following their meeting, the two leaders revealed that they had pledged a combined investment of $500 billion (approximately Rs 43,41,987 crore) in sectors such as energy, defense, and technology by 2030. The commitment aims to enhance collaboration between the two countries and increase their mutual economic growth.

Adding to the significance of this meeting, Prime Minister Modi echoed Trump’s famous campaign slogan with a new twist, saying, “Make India Great Again,” a sentiment similar to Trump’s own “Make America Great Again.” Both leaders have placed high hopes on the strengthened partnership.

One of the most notable developments from this meeting was the announcement that NASA and ISRO, India’s space agency, would collaborate on space research, highlighting growing cooperation in technological advancements. Moreover, President Trump confirmed that the US would be selling one of its most advanced fighter jets to India, reinforcing military ties between the nations amid growing regional tensions.

The discussion also touched on the ongoing trade disputes, with both parties agreeing to work together on resolving issues related to tariffs. Trump emphasized that America would continue to support India, assuring a united front on various global issues.

International analysts are optimistic about the potential positive impacts of this meeting for India’s future. However, as the world watches closely, the effectiveness of these agreements in the long term will remain to be seen.

West Bengal to Raise Rs 81,972 Crore Loan, Mamata Faces Criticism Over Rising Debt

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, February 13, 2025, Kolkata : The West Bengal government has announced plans to raise a new loan of Rs 81,972 crore from the market, as revealed by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during a press conference following the budget session on Wednesday afternoon. This announcement comes as part of the last full budget of the Mamata government before the 2026 assembly elections.

The state’s Minister of State for Finance, Chandrima Bhattacharya, presented the full budget in the assembly on the same day, followed by a press conference with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Bhattacharya, and former Finance Minister Amit Mitra. In the conference, Mamata Banerjee discussed the state’s financial outlook and the necessity of taking this significant loan.

However, the announcement has drawn sharp criticism from opposition leaders, particularly CPI(M) State Secretary Mohammad Salim. Salim questioned the rationale behind the increasing debt, stating that the state’s loan has risen fourfold under the Trinamool Congress government. He expressed concern over where the money from this debt is going, and whether there are tangible benefits for the people of the state.

“What is happening with so much debt? Where is the money from this debt going? What are the obligations? Loans are being taken from the market at high interest rates to satisfy hobbies,” Salim remarked. He further criticized the government’s lack of focus on addressing unemployment, asking, “How many jobs have been created, how many employment plans are there? We don’t know the details.”

Salim also took aim at the state’s housing scheme, sarcastically commenting on the ongoing discussions surrounding it, suggesting that the government’s priorities are misplaced. The opposition’s criticism highlights the growing concerns over West Bengal’s financial management as the state prepares for the upcoming elections.
