Noel Tata Appointed New Chairman of Tata Trusts, Ending Speculation on Ratan Tata’s Successor

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, Mumbai, October 11, 2024: After months of speculation, the Tata Trusts have finally named their new leader. On Friday, it was officially announced that Noel Tata, half-brother of the late Ratan Tata, will take over as Chairman of the prestigious Tata Trusts. This appointment brings an end to widespread conjecture about the future of the conglomerate after the passing of Ratan Tata, the business magnate who played an iconic role in shaping the legacy of the Tata Group.

Noel Tata, a veteran in the Tata ecosystem, has been with the group for over 40 years. His vast experience and longstanding association with Tata companies made him a natural choice for the position. At present, Noel Tata holds several prominent roles, including Chairman of Tata International, Voltas, and Tata Investment Corporation. He also serves as Vice Chairman of Tata Steel and Titan Company Limited, two of the group’s flagship firms. Additionally, he is a trustee on the boards of the Sir Ratan Tata Trust and Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, further solidifying his influence within the Tata family.

The decision to appoint Noel Tata was made unanimously during a meeting of the Sir Ratan Tata Trust and Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, held earlier today in Mumbai. At 67 years old, Noel brings with him a wealth of experience and leadership acumen. A graduate of Sussex University in the UK, Noel also gained corporate experience early in his career working at Nestlé. His deep-rooted ties to the business world are further strengthened by his marriage to Aloo Mistry, the daughter of the late Palonji Mistry, who was the largest individual shareholder of Tata Sons.
Family Tree of Tatas

Noel and Aloo have three children—Leah, Maya, and Neville—who have also taken on various roles within the Tata Group. Although they prefer to maintain a low profile, Leah Tata is known to be involved in the family’s hotel business. The entire family is poised to continue the Tata legacy, managing a conglomerate with a global presence in over 100 countries, spanning industries from steel to hospitality to technology.

Noel Tata, who always looked up to his half-brother Ratan as a mentor and business guide, now assumes one of the most powerful roles in Indian industry. As the new Chairman of Tata Trusts, Noel is expected to safeguard the group’s values while steering the company into the future. This appointment ensures continuity, stability, and a reinforcement of the Tata Group’s long-standing commitment to ethical business practices and philanthropic efforts.

The Tata Group, one of India’s most respected and enduring industrial houses, has long been a symbol of national pride, and Noel Tata’s leadership is expected to further strengthen that legacy.

The Tata Family Ancestry And History

New Delhi: Tatas, a brand that has for more than 150 years instilled a feeling of trust and reassurance, has always seen a line of succession where the people at the helm have set the very highest standards and ethics in the world of business. Their personalities cannot be separated from what the brand has evolved into.
Founded in 1868, Tatas have become one of largest and most diverse global conglomerates. It is a name heard in almost every home in India and tens of millions overseas.
Ratan Tata, the kind and graceful gentleman-industrialist and philanthropist, who is credited with taking brand Tata to over 100 countries under his leadership, died at a hospital in Mumbai earlier this week. His stewardship of the Tata behemoth has left a void that few can fill, or not – only time will tell.
Ratan Tata is being succeeded by his half-brother Noel Tata. Ratan Tata’s parents Naval Tata and Soonoo Commissariat got divorced when Ratan and his younger brother Jimmy were very young. Years later their father married Simone Dunoyer, and the two had a son Noel.

THE TATA FAMILY ANCESTRY
Ancestors of the Tata family migrated to India from Persia, now Iran, in the 8th century AD. They were part of a large group of Parsis (people from Persia), a Zoroastrian ethnic community, who fled persecution during the Islamic Conquest of Persia.
According to the Tata Central Archives, the Tatas settled in Navsari in Gujarat and lived there for 25 generations before business took them to Bombay – then the Bombay Presidency under the British Raj. At the time Bombay Province included the western two-thirds of Maharashtra, northwestern Karnataka, all of Gujarat, all of Sindh (now in Pakistan), and Aden (in present-day Yemen).
The journey of the Tata family’s business began with Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, who stated a trading company in Bombay in 1868, which has today become the Tata Group. The Tatas have always believed in the concept of country and society – building and uplifting the people and the community over personal gains – and right from the very beginning, Jamsetji and his two sons – Sir Dorabji Tata and Sir Ratan Tata – left most of their estate and shares in the company to charitable trusts.
Today, there are 14 different trusts run by the Tatas which work in different sectors, each independent of the other in the nature and field of work they do. All of these however, come under an umbrella organisation called Tata Trust.
Ratan Tata was the Chairman of the Tata Trusts and Chairman Emeritus of the Tata Group. After his demise, his half-brother Noel Tata has become the Chairman of Tata Trusts while Natarajan Chandrasekaran is Chairman of the Tata Group, whose largest stakeholder is the Tata Trust.

NOEL TATA – NEW CHAIRMAN – TATA TRUSTS
Born in December 1957, Noel Tata is twenty years younger than his half-brother Ratan Tata. He is the son of Naval Tata and Simone Dunoyer, a French-Swiss Catholic and businesswoman from Switzerland.
Noel Tata holds a degree from Sussex University (UK) and has completed the International Executive Programme (IEP) at INSEAD..
He is an Indian-Irish businessman and has been appointed as the Chairman of the Tata Trust. He is married to Aloo Mistry, who is Cyrus Mistry’s sister and Shapoorji Pallonji Mistry’s granddaughter. They have three children – Neville, Maya, and Leah – all of whom are actively involved in the Tata conglomerate.
Leah Tata is the Vice President at the Indian Hotels Company. While Maya Tata is associated with Tata Capital, Neville Tata is part of Trent and leadership team at Star Bazaar.
Noel Tata’s most prominent role before this new appointment was as Managing Director of Tata International Ltd, the group’s trading and distribution arm.
Under his leadership from 2010 to 2021, the company grew from a turnover of $500 million to over $3 billion.
As Managing Director of Trent Ltd, Tata’s retail arm, he expanded its operations from a single store in 1998 to over 700 stores across various formats.

Tragic Accident Claims Lives of Doctor’s Wife and Daughter on Saptami

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, October 10, 2024, Kolkata : In a heartbreaking incident that has cast a shadow over the Mahasaptami festivities, Dr. Kishloy Vikas Naik, a pediatrician at Shambhunath Pandit Hospital, suffered a devastating loss when his wife and daughter were killed in a tragic road accident on the afternoon of Saptami. The accident also left Dr. Naik severely injured.

The accident occurred on National Highway 19 at Amra in Shaktigarh as Dr. Naik was driving his family to his in-laws’ house in Burdwan. Witnesses reported that the car lost control and crashed into the road divider. Tragically, both Rajshree Naik, 47, and their daughter Adrila Naik, 13, died at the scene.

Local authorities were alerted to the accident, and the Shaktigarh police promptly responded, transporting the injured doctor and the two victims to a government trauma care center. Despite medical efforts, Dr. Naik’s wife and daughter were pronounced dead upon arrival.

Dr. Naik, who remains unconscious and is receiving treatment for his injuries, faces a devastating emotional and physical recovery. The community has been deeply affected by this tragic event, as many come together to offer condolences and support for the grieving doctor.

This incident serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life, particularly during a time when families gather to celebrate the festive season. As Kolkata embraces the spirit of Durga Puja, the loss felt by Dr. Naik and his extended family resonates deeply, overshadowing the festivities with sorrow and compassion.

Mahasaptami Celebrations Overshadowed by Junior Doctors’ Hunger Strike and Political Tensions in Kolkata

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, October 10, 2024, Kolkata – As the state of West Bengal immerses itself in the vibrant celebrations of Mahasaptami, the festive mood contrasts sharply with the ongoing hunger strike by junior doctors at RG Kar Hospital. Since Saturday night, these doctors have been protesting for better working conditions and healthcare infrastructure, drawing significant attention amid the festivities.

Despite the joyous atmosphere surrounding Durga Puja, the strike has prompted political commentary from Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh. In a series of posts on social media platform X, Ghosh raised various concerns about the medical community, specifically targeting senior doctors rather than the junior doctors directly involved in the strike. He highlighted perceived failures within the healthcare system and questioned the actions of those who had resigned en masse.

As of now, seven junior doctors are actively participating in the hunger strike in front of the metro channel at Dharmatala, following a week of fasting that has reportedly taken a toll on their health. Ghosh noted the deteriorating physical condition of the protesting doctors and emphasized the need for accountability within the medical ranks.

In his posts, Ghosh pointedly remarked that some doctors “do not wash tulsi leaves,” referring to traditional practices and rituals that he believes should be upheld. He called on those who have resigned to submit their resignations formally to the state government, urging that the government accept these resignations.

The ongoing tension has sparked significant discourse within the state’s political landscape, overshadowing the festive celebrations. As Kolkata revels in the spirit of Durga Puja, the plight of the junior doctors remains a pressing issue, highlighting the complexities of healthcare and governance in the region.

As both sides of this dispute continue to express their grievances, the hope is for a resolution that addresses the doctors’ concerns while allowing the people of Kolkata to fully embrace the joy of the festival season.

Imam Bazar: A Symbol of Unity as Hindu and Muslim Communities Celebrate Durga Puja Together

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, October 10, 2024, Hooghly : In a remarkable display of communal harmony, the Imam Bazar in Hooghly has become a focal point for unity during the Durga Puja festivities. Built over two decades under the initiative of Danbir Haji Mohammad Mohsin, this stunning architectural marvel stands as a testament to the inclusive spirit of the region, welcoming people from all communities.

Adjacent to the Imam Bazar, on the serene banks of the Ganges, the local Imam Bazar organizes a vibrant public Durga Puja, where members of both Hindu and Muslim communities come together to celebrate. This year, as in years past, the festival has seen participants working side by side, from fetching the idol from the potter’s house to organizing various rituals and festivities.

Mohammad Ramzan, a local resident, shared his enthusiasm, saying, “We do puja together. We are very happy. I bring the idol of Goddess Durga in my own car. During our Muharram tazia, our Hindu brothers join us. We live side by side, so we don’t see any difference.”

Soumitra Singh, another community member, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that the Durga Puja they organize is a true collaboration between Hindu and Muslim residents. “Though the place is called Imam Bazar, the Durga Puja we celebrate is a joint effort. Ramzan brings the idol without asking for a penny. Our youth may be fewer, but the spirit of cooperation is strong. We enjoy the festivities together—eating prasad, sharing sacrifices, and celebrating both Eid and Muharram in unison,” he explained.

Highlighting the unique atmosphere of peace in the Imam Bazar area, Soumitra noted that despite the proximity of two distinct communities, there have been no reports of untoward incidents. “We pray to the Mother to maintain harmony. Festivals like Durga Puja are for everyone, and we celebrate them together,” he said.

As the festivities unfold, the Imam Bazar stands as a shining example of how cultural and religious differences can be bridged through shared celebrations, fostering an environment of mutual respect and understanding. In Hooghly, the spirit of togetherness prevails, reminding all that unity in diversity is not just an ideal, but a lived reality.

JP Nadda Visits Kolkata for Durga Puja Amid Ongoing Protests by Junior Doctors

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, October 10, 2024, Kolkata : BJP National President and Union Health Minister JP Nadda has arrived in Kolkata, warmly welcomed as the “son-in-law of Bengal” during the auspicious Durga Puja celebrations. Nadda began his visit at the iconic Belur Math this morning, coinciding with the festivities of Saptami, the seventh day of the festival.

Following his visit to Belur Math, Nadda attended the Durga Puja celebrations at Santosh Mitra Square, hosted by BJP Councilor Sajal Ghosh. He was accompanied by prominent party leaders, including the Leader of the Opposition, Subhendu Adhikari, and BJP state president Sukant Majumder.

Speaking to the media, Nadda expressed his delight at being in Kolkata during Durga Puja. “Happy Durga Puja to all the people of Bengal. The blessings of Goddess Durga provide us with the strength to fight injustice. Justice will prevail,” he stated, invoking the spirit of the festival.

However, he also emphasized his intention to refrain from discussing politics during the celebrations, saying, “I will not discuss politics on the day of Puja. The fight for justice in Bengal will continue, and iniquity will end.” Nadda concluded his remarks by seeking blessings for everyone.

While Nadda’s visit brought festive cheer, it coincided with ongoing protests by junior doctors in West Bengal. The medical professionals are currently on a hunger strike, demanding improvements in health service infrastructure and enhanced safety measures. Their protests highlight a growing concern within the healthcare system, adding a layer of complexity to the festive atmosphere.

As Kolkata embraces the spirit of Durga Puja, the juxtaposition of celebration and protest underscores the multifaceted challenges facing the state, particularly in the realm of public health and safety.

Kolkata Police Implements Zero Tolerance Policy for Festive Season

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, October 10, 2024, Kolkata : In a proactive move to ensure public safety during the bustling Durga Puja celebrations, Commissioner of Police Manoj Verma has issued a series of directives to Kolkata police officers. Emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy towards misbehavior, Verma instructed that any police personnel found acting improperly towards the public will face strict consequences.

According to sources from Lalbazar, the Commissioner underscored the importance of maintaining a respectful and supportive presence, particularly towards vulnerable groups such as the elderly, women, and children. “Bad behavior that tarnishes the image of our force will not be tolerated,” he asserted, adding that any officer found intoxicated during the festivities will also face strict disciplinary action.

With the streets of Kolkata bustling with people during Durga Puja, police forces are ramping up their efforts to prevent crime and ensure safety. Officers in white uniforms are conducting round-the-clock surveillance, supported by an extensive network of approximately 27,000 CCTV cameras monitored from the Lalbazar control room.

In an initiative to assist those who may become lost in the crowd, the Kolkata Police has partnered with the Child Welfare Committee and various voluntary organizations to launch “Bandhu Kolkata,” providing a dedicated helpline at 9163737373.

Additionally, traffic guards have been instructed to rigorously enforce sobriety checks on drivers during the festivities. Intelligence reports have indicated potential threats of disorder in the mandapam areas, prompting heightened vigilance with plainclothes officers deployed alongside uniformed personnel.

A total of 10,000 police officers, including members from the Traffic, Special Branch, and Intelligence Division, are stationed throughout the city. With 200 pickets established and 36 officers of Deputy Commissioner rank actively overseeing the operations, the Kolkata Police are prepared to swiftly respond to any disturbances.

Kolkata Doctors Renew Protests Over CBI Charge Sheet in RG Kar Case

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, October 9, 2024, Kolkata  : In a significant escalation of their ongoing protests, doctors in Kolkata once again surrounded the office of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on October 9, following earlier demonstrations on September 20. This time, however, the movement is being spearheaded by senior medical professionals, highlighting the deepening concerns over the handling of the RG Kar case.

The protests are organized by three prominent medical and nursing associations, which have called for a march from Karunamayi to the CGO complex on Saturday afternoon. This action comes on the heels of the CBI submitting its charge sheet in Sealdah court last Monday, which has drawn sharp criticism from the medical community.

The charge sheet claims that Sanjay Rai acted alone in the horrific rape-murder incident, a conclusion that has been met with widespread skepticism among senior doctors. “The CBI’s charge sheet is disappointing and ridiculous. After 55 days of investigation, they suggest that one individual is responsible, despite the post-mortem report indicating the involvement of more than one person,” stated a senior physician involved in the protests.

This claim raises serious questions about the integrity of the investigation, with many doctors speculating whether the CBI is attempting to conceal crucial facts. “Is the CBI trying to hide something?” they asked, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability in such a grave matter.

The doctors have urged the citizens of Kolkata to join their cause, stating, “In the midst of five days of worship, we are giving one hour to demand justice!” Their calls for solidarity resonate deeply in a city that has been shaken by this tragedy.

In addition to the planned march, the protesting medical professionals have announced a blood donation camp in memory of the victim, scheduled for Wednesday morning at RG Kar Medical College. This initiative aims to not only honor the victim’s memory but also mobilize community support for the broader demand for justice.

As the protests continue to gather momentum, the medical community remains resolute in its commitment to ensuring that justice is served, reflecting a growing frustration over the perceived inadequacies in the investigation process. The coming days will likely see increased public engagement and activism as the doctors and their supporters rally for a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the RG Kar case.

Doctors’ Hunger Strike Turns Kolkata’s Pujas into a Stage for Protest

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, October 9, 2024, Kolkata : In an unprecedented turn of events, this year’s Durga Puja celebrations in Kolkata are being overshadowed by a hunger strike led by doctors protesting for better working conditions and increased healthcare funding. As tensions rise, doctors have pledged to continue their fast, declaring that their fight for justice will not be sidelined by the festive atmosphere.

On the sixth day of the ongoing protest, the striking doctors organized a special Parikrama, intended as both a demonstration and a way to reach the public during the festive season. However, the event quickly escalated into a heated confrontation between the protesters and police. Authorities reportedly halted the progress of the protest matadors—converted mini-vans used for transportation—near Chandni Chowk, sparking a heated exchange.

Despite the festive decorations and crowds that usually characterize this time of year, the atmosphere in Kolkata turned somber as queues formed at Chandni Chowk, not for puja rituals, but in support of the doctors’ cause. The streets were filled with the sounds of slogans echoing the demand for justice, as supporters rallied to voice their solidarity with the striking medical professionals.

The plan for the day included distributing leaflets at various puja mandaps across South Kolkata to raise awareness about their grievances. The doctors, determined to make their voices heard, boarded three matadors for the outreach effort, but soon found themselves impeded by police intervention. The situation escalated as more people flocked to the scene, amplifying the protest’s impact.

After a brief standoff, police relented under the pressure of the growing crowd, allowing the matador to proceed. Witnesses reported scenes of solidarity as individuals pushed the vehicle forward, united by the common goal of advocating for improved healthcare standards. “We want justice!” echoed through the streets, highlighting the urgency of their demands.

As the city celebrates one of its most beloved festivals, the juxtaposition of joy and protest paints a complex picture of Kolkata’s social landscape. The doctors’ hunger strike serves as a poignant reminder that amidst the festivities, critical issues regarding public health and safety are demanding immediate attention.

With the hunger strike continuing, the doctors remain resolute in their commitment to advocate for systemic change, urging the public and policymakers alike to address the pressing challenges facing the healthcare sector in West Bengal.

Sub-Inspector Arrested for Molestation Charges Granted Bail Amid Allegations of Conspiracy

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, October 7, 2024, Kolkata: In a troubling incident at the Park Street police station, a female civic volunteer has accused Sub-Inspector Abhishek Roy of molestation. The alleged incident took place within the confines of the police station, leading to Roy’s arrest on Sunday. However, he was granted bail just hours after being taken into custody, prompting questions and controversy surrounding the case.

According to sources, the female civic volunteer reported that she was called to the fourth-floor restroom of the police station around 1:10 PM by Sub-Inspector Roy, who allegedly behaved inappropriately towards her. The complainant, who began her duty at the Park Street police station at 9 PM on Friday, claims that Roy was under the influence of alcohol during the encounter. She alleged that after presenting her with a salwar kameez as a Puja gift, the sub-inspector made unwanted advances towards her.

The situation escalated when the civic volunteer attempted to file a complaint with her superiors. Reports indicate that the duty officer at the Park Street police station initially attempted to dismiss her claims and suggested that she settle the matter informally. This lack of support prompted the complainant to escalate her grievance, leading her to file formal complaints with several high-ranking officials, including the Commissioner of Police and the Joint Commissioner of Crime.

Despite the serious allegations, Sub-Inspector Roy was able to secure bail from the court within 24 hours of his arrest. His lawyer contended in court that the accusations are unfounded and constitute a conspiracy against him. “My client has been framed. The complainant is not telling the truth,” the lawyer argued, emphasizing that the legal proceedings should reflect the facts rather than hearsay.

The case has drawn significant attention, with many questioning the rapidity of the bail process and the implications of such allegations against a police officer.

In her statements, the female civic volunteer alleged that this was not the first time she had faced misconduct from Roy. She claimed that a similar incident occurred on September 24, during which she reported unwanted advances from the same sub-inspector in the computer room of the police station.

Following the recent allegations, an investigation has been initiated under Section 74 of the Indian Penal Code, which deals with molestation. Authorities have vowed to thoroughly investigate the claims to ensure that justice is served, regardless of the accused’s position.

The case has sparked outrage among local civic organizations and women’s rights advocates, who are calling for a comprehensive investigation and accountability for police misconduct. Many are urging for systemic changes within the police force to prevent similar incidents in the future and to ensure a safer environment for civic volunteers and female staff members.

As the investigation progresses, both the police department and the community are keenly watching how the situation unfolds. The case highlights broader issues regarding harassment, accountability, and the treatment of women in the workplace, particularly within law enforcement agencies.

The public is now awaiting further developments in the case as the authorities are expected to take appropriate actions in light of the allegations.

Eastern Railway Enhances Security Measures at Howrah-Sealdah Stations for Puja Festivities

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, October 7, 2024, Kolkata:

In anticipation of the heavy foot traffic expected during the Durga Puja celebrations, Eastern Railway is implementing special security measures at key railway hubs, particularly Howrah and Sealdah stations. As the festivities kick off, the influx of passengers is expected to surge, especially for the viewing of Tagore’s works on Panchami, leading to overcrowded corridors and potential safety concerns.
To ensure the safety of travelers and to prevent any untoward incidents, Eastern Railway has established a Quick Reaction Armed Team (QRAT) that will be stationed at the railway stations. This elite unit, comprising 8 to 10 armed personnel selected from the Railway Protection Force (RPF), will be on standby to address any emergencies or conspiratorial acts that may arise amid the large crowds.

Param Shiv, Inspector General of the RPF for Eastern Railway, emphasized the preparedness of these teams, stating, “The personnel in these teams are physically fit, agile, and skilled in handling firearms. They are also adept at conducting intelligence surveillance to maintain a safe environment. Our goal this year is to ensure that no conspiratorial activities take place during the Puja days.”
To bolster security further, the RPF will utilize CCTV surveillance to monitor the crowds effectively. The quick reaction teams will be strategically positioned at entry and exit points of the stations, ready to respond to any incidents, such as medical emergencies, theft, or other disruptions.

In addition to the armed teams, seven additional ticket counters will be opened at Howrah Station to facilitate smooth passenger flow during the festive season. The railway authorities are also coordinating with local police to monitor 30 pandals in close proximity to the railway lines to ensure the safety of festival-goers.

To accommodate the anticipated increase in passenger demand, Eastern Railway will also introduce additional train services on key routes. A second train will operate between Patna, Haldia, NGP (Nagpur), Roxaules, and Katihar, enhancing connectivity and reducing overcrowding on popular routes during the festive period.
The community response to the enhanced security measures has been largely positive, with many travelers expressing appreciation for the proactive steps taken by the Eastern Railway. As families prepare for the festivities, the railway’s commitment to passenger safety has provided a sense of reassurance.

Travelers are advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities. The Eastern Railway encourages everyone to cooperate with security personnel and adhere to safety guidelines during this festive season.

Former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal Faces Legal Scrutiny Over Victim Identification Controversy

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, October 7, 2024,  Kolkata :  Former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal is now under significant legal pressure and risks losing his post due to allegations surrounding the disclosure of a victim’s identity. The controversy erupted after Goyal publicly revealed the identity of a doctor from RG Kar Hospital who was a victim in a sensitive case, prompting widespread criticism and legal action.

In response to this incident, a public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed against Goyal in the Calcutta High Court, seeking to hold him accountable for his actions. On Monday, the court directed the central government’s Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) to be included in the proceedings, as Goyal is an officer of the central cadre.

The division bench, consisting of Justice T.S. Shivagnam and Justice Bivas Patnaik, instructed the DoPT to submit an affidavit detailing what legal actions are available against an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer in such circumstances. The DoPT, overseen by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is tasked with overseeing the governance of central civil services, including police personnel.

The PIL was filed by lawyer Amrita Pandey, who argued that Goyal’s actions constitute a violation of legal protocols designed to protect the identities of victims in sensitive cases. The revelation not only jeopardizes the victim’s safety and privacy but also raises ethical questions about the responsibilities of public officials in handling sensitive information.

Pandey emphasized that such disclosures can have severe repercussions, including the potential for further victimization of those involved. In her petition, she urged the court to consider the implications of Goyal’s actions and to hold him accountable to ensure justice is served.

In light of these developments, the Calcutta High Court has requested a comprehensive affidavit from the DoPT, clarifying the possible repercussions for IPS officers who violate legal standards. This includes determining whether disciplinary measures or legal proceedings can be initiated against Goyal for his actions.

The court has scheduled the next hearing for the case to take place in the second week following the upcoming Durga Puja holidays. Legal experts suggest that the outcome of this case could set a significant precedent regarding the conduct of IPS officers and the legal frameworks in place to address misconduct within the police force.

As the situation unfolds, there is considerable public interest in the case, with many calling for strict accountability among law enforcement officials. Advocates for victims’ rights are particularly vocal, asserting that transparency and adherence to legal standards are essential to maintaining public trust in the police force.

The revelation of the victim’s identity by Goyal has ignited discussions about the need for more stringent protocols to protect individuals in sensitive situations, particularly in cases involving sexual assault and harassment. Many stakeholders, including legal professionals, social activists, and ordinary citizens, are closely watching the developments in this case, hoping for a resolution that prioritizes justice and accountability.

The controversy surrounding Vineet Goyal’s actions has sparked significant debate in the community regarding the responsibilities of law enforcement officials and the protection of victims’ rights. As discussions continue, there is a growing demand for reforms to ensure that such breaches of confidentiality do not happen in the future.

The case also raises broader questions about the treatment of victims in the justice system, emphasizing the need for comprehensive training for law enforcement officers on the legal and ethical considerations surrounding victim identification and privacy.

As the public awaits the next steps in the legal proceedings, the implications of this case are expected to resonate beyond Kolkata, potentially influencing policies related to victim protection and police accountability at the national level.

Jayanagar Incident Shakes Public: High Court-Ordered Autopsy Confirms Sexual Assault and Strangulation of Minor

Baby Charaborty, KalimNews, Kolkata, October 7, 2024 : The Jayanagar incident has sent shockwaves across the region, with mounting public outrage following the results of the autopsy conducted on a minor victim. On Monday, in accordance with the directive of the Calcutta High Court, doctors at AIIMS Kalyani carried out the post-mortem examination, which revealed disturbing details about the young girl’s death.

According to a report by Anandabazar Patrika, the post-mortem confirmed that the minor was sexually assaulted before being strangled to death. The autopsy, conducted at the behest of the court to ensure transparency, provided crucial insights into the tragic incident, which has since sparked widespread unrest in the community.

This autopsy followed a directive issued by Justice Tirthankar Ghosh of the Calcutta High Court’s Special Bench on Sunday. The court ordered that the post-mortem be conducted at AIIMS Hospital in Kalyani to ensure impartiality and professionalism in handling the sensitive case. The court further instructed that if AIIMS Kalyani lacked the infrastructure for such a procedure, the autopsy should instead be carried out at JNM Hospital, Kalyani. A strict condition was imposed that no doctors or staff from these local institutions would participate in the post-mortem to maintain objectivity.

In line with the court’s directive, on Monday morning, the police transported the body of the minor victim from Kolkata’s Kantapukur Mortuary to Kalyani in a hearse. The autopsy process began at 12 noon, and the official report confirmed the family’s worst fears: the minor had suffered sexual violence before being strangled.

The origins of this tragic case began when the minor’s body was discovered on Saturday, triggering an outpouring of grief and calls for justice. In the aftermath of the discovery, the victim’s father publicly expressed his distrust in the state government’s handling of the investigation. He voiced concerns about potential interference and urged that the post-mortem be conducted at a Central Government hospital instead of a state-run facility. In a formal appeal, the father of the victim wrote to the Director General of State Police, requesting that the post-mortem be handled by an impartial institution, reflecting a lack of confidence in the state’s ability to ensure transparency.

This request likely influenced the court’s decision to appoint AIIMS Kalyani as the site for the post-mortem, removing local involvement from the process. The court’s intervention was seen as a crucial step toward maintaining fairness in the investigation and restoring some level of trust in the legal proceedings.

There is a growing demand for accountability and swift justice for the victim. The horrific details of the case have reignited broader discussions about the safety and security of minors, the effectiveness of law enforcement, and the need for systemic reforms to prevent such atrocities in the future.

As the investigation progresses, there is immense public pressure on both the state government and law enforcement agencies to ensure that justice is served. Advocacy groups, political figures, and concerned citizens are calling for a transparent investigation that will hold the perpetrators accountable and deliver justice for the young victim.

In the meantime, the victim’s family and the broader community wait anxiously for further developments in the case, hoping that the legal system will provide swift and fair justice in light of the grievous tragedy.

October 7, 2024, Kolkata  :  In a dramatic escalation of the ongoing medical crisis in West Bengal, 50 senior doctors from several prominent hospitals, including RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, have submitted their resignations in a show of solidarity with the junior doctors’ movement. The resigning doctors include heads of various departments, signaling a significant challenge to the state’s healthcare system.

Reports indicate that doctors from other major medical institutions, such as NRS Medical College and Hospital and SSKM Hospital, have also joined the growing protest. This mass resignation is seen as an unprecedented move by senior medical professionals to increase pressure on the state government in support of the junior doctors’ 10-point demand, which includes better working conditions and systemic reforms in the healthcare sector.

Escalating Crisis

The movement began with junior doctors staging a hunger strike at Dharmatala, demanding immediate action on their grievances. As of Monday, the number of junior doctors participating in the hunger strike has continued to grow. In a new development, 3-4 specialist doctors—referred to as “player doctors” for their leadership and influence in the medical community—joined the hunger strike, signaling that the protest is gaining momentum beyond the junior ranks.

Many of the senior doctors who have aligned themselves with the movement are former students of RG Kar Medical College Hospital, creating a powerful bond of solidarity between the two generations of medical professionals. They see the junior doctors’ struggle as a legitimate fight for better working conditions, patient safety, and reforms that would benefit both healthcare providers and recipients.

Relay Hunger Strike and Mass Resignation

On Monday night, the Joint Platform of Doctors, an organization representing senior medical professionals, announced in a press release their decision to initiate a relay fasting program. According to the statement, senior doctors will participate in this fasting program from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. each day, in a rotating manner, to show continuous support for the junior doctors without completely abandoning their duties. However, this symbolic act of protest took a serious turn when 50 senior doctors submitted their resignations during the ongoing relay fast.

The mass resignation followed a meeting of department heads earlier that day. The decision was made collectively by the doctors as a way to further intensify pressure on the state government. Despite the resignations, the senior doctors have clarified that they will not abandon their patients. In their statement, they reassured the public that they will continue to provide care and services at the hospitals, even as their formal roles as state employees come to an end.

“We are resigning in protest, but we will remain with our patients. This movement is not against the people, but for a better healthcare system,” one of the senior doctors stated, underlining their commitment to patient care despite the dire circumstances.

Implications for the State’s Healthcare System

The mass resignation of senior doctors has triggered alarm across the state’s healthcare institutions. With the growing number of junior doctors on hunger strike and the absence of key senior medical staff, there is rising concern about the potential collapse of the state’s healthcare system if the situation is not resolved soon.

Several senior officials in the health department have expressed fears that the mass resignation could cripple the functioning of key hospitals, especially if the protest continues for an extended period. Emergency services and critical care units are already feeling the strain, and any further disruption could lead to severe consequences for patient care.

The state government, thus far, has not provided any official response to the mass resignation, but insiders suggest that high-level discussions are underway to find a resolution. The demands of the junior doctors, which range from better working hours to addressing patient safety concerns, have received widespread support from medical professionals and civil society groups, but negotiations with the state have yet to yield concrete results.

A Call for Urgent Resolution

As the protest continues to gain momentum and the healthcare system teeters on the brink of collapse, there are growing calls for urgent intervention from the state government. Many within the medical community are warning that if the government does not engage in meaningful dialogue with the protesting doctors, the situation could spiral into a full-blown healthcare crisis.

Meanwhile, the public remains on edge, as many patients and their families express concern about the availability of medical care in the days ahead. The doctors, both junior and senior, remain committed to their cause but have also reassured the public that their protest is aimed at improving the very system that serves the people.

With the situation hanging in the balance, the state now faces the dual challenge of addressing the doctors’ demands while maintaining the functionality of its healthcare infrastructure.

Gaza- A year Later: The international community must assume its responsibilities

Since 7 October 2023, only shades of black have been visible in Palestine.

Anthony Bellanger, IJU, October 7, 2024 : In 12 months, the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), a worldwide organisation representing 600,000 media professionals in 150 countries, has recorded at least 138 journalists’ deaths during the course of the war in Gaza. Of these, 128 were Palestinians, five Lebanese, four Israeli and one Syrian. This death toll represents the bloodiest period in the history of journalism.

By way of comparison, the other major conflict in the world between Ukraine and Russia has resulted in the deaths of 18 Ukrainian journalists after 32 months of conflict.
The IFJ’s investigations, with the help of its Palestinian affiliate, the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate (PJS), clearly show that many of these victims were targeted by the Israeli army – a practice the International Court of Justice demanded the cessation of in October 2023, as international law requires.

This war in Gaza – now spread to Lebanon – is the will of the government of one man, Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu. He is trampling international conventions and even took the liberty of boasting about his military actions against civilians at the United Nations General Assembly. His pretext is ‘fighting terrorism’. Yet since the American conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, analysis shows that indiscriminate warfare and arbitrary strikes in the cause of combatting terrorism are totally counterproductive. Evidence suggests that they reinforce radical ideologies and amplify the actions of the very organisations they are intended to oppose. Not only that, but these indiscriminate attacks on civilians create at least two generations of hatred and resentment against their aggressors and their descendants.

Since October 2023, the IFJ has made repeated appeals to the United Nations. We have demanded a ceasefire to allow civilians to leave the Gaza Strip (an area of around 365km2, a third the size of Paris). We have called for humanitarian and logistical aid to be delivered as close as possible to the population, including protective equipment for journalists. And we have joined the call for foreign journalists and media workers to be allowed into the enclave to document the war.

Nothing has happened. The Netanyahu government remains impervious, despite the incessant actions of UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
In brazen defiance, Israel has ordered the continuation of strikes by its army, financed mainly by the United States (68%) and Germany (30%).

Dehumanisation

After the deadly attack perpetrated by Hamas in southern Israel on 7 October, which left more than 1,200 people dead and 251 hostages in captivity, the IFJ called on journalists around the world to respect the truth and check the facts – not least because of the publication of one of the biggest ‘fake news’ stories of recent decades on the so-called beheaded babies.

Since then, debates have raged within editorial departments. Some fear being labelled pro-Palestinian; others that they are doing the bidding of Israel.

One consequence of this small-minded professionalism has been a kind of self-censorship, that has resulted in the total dehumanisation of the Palestinian people. They have no-one but themselves to relate the story of their daily nightmare. When internet connections are authorised or in working order, the only way for the world to be kept informed is through publications on the social networking platforms of Gazan journalists.

The vast majority of the world’s media are effectively cut off from a huge news story whose daily horrors pass they by. Their only available sources arethe journalists who are members of the PJS and the IFJ, who take all the risks to film and photograph with their phones. They are the only ones who are able to fulfil their mission, providing information from the battle front, even though they lack all but the bare essentials, for which they must pay premiums prices on the black market.

On the Israeli side, the dehumanisation of Palestinian civilians is orchestrated by the journalists themselves. In an interview with AFP, one of Channel 14‘s Israeli journalists, Hallel Bitton-Rosen, stated bluntly that her work focuses on “supporting the fighting forces that are protecting the country and its citizens from the vile terrorists who perpetrated the ”terrible massacre’’.

Is this self-censorship or propaganda?

Fortunately, many journalists who deserve that title are taking on their mission with professionalism and relaying the work of their colleagues in Gaza, while cross-checking their sources with the official communications of the two belligerents.

Solidarity centers for the media

For its part, the International Federation of Journalists and its member unions have raised several hundred thousand euros for journalists in Gaza via its International Safety Fund. At the end of July we opened the first media solidarity centre in the south of the enclave, in the Khan Younis region. The number of centres has now risen to two, with the help in particular of UNESCO, but it is nowhere near enough. Gazan journalists are determined to tell their story, and for so long as that is the case, it is the IFJ’s duty to support them doing this in whatever way we can.

A few days away from the first anniversary of the terrible 7 October attack, it is clear that this war has the potential to expose the tragic shortcomings of the United Nations, just as the Second World War did the League of Nations. The UN Security Council is paralysed, sclerotic and powerless in the face of an Israeli government that enjoys scandalous impunity.

When the dust settles from the rubble of Gaza, the historians of the 2030s will pass harsh judgement on the international community, if it still deserves that name, so divided is the world, in particular the world’s great ‘powers’. The West and the Arab world have, at best issued weak and disconnected declarations, and at worst have financed the arming of the Israeli government. The international community must accept its responsibilities – and the sooner the better.

If international justice delivers on its obligations, the leaders of Israel and Hamas should be in the dock facing charges ranging from war crimes to crimes against humanity. Many other political leaders should appear for complicity in those crimes.
Apart from our IFJ colleagues, we no longer expect anything from anyone,’ lamented a Palestinian journalist in Gaza in September. “There have been so many deaths that we have nothing left to lose, not even our lives. If hell exists, I think I’m living in it right now. It’s a real massacre. It is beyond the imagination of anyone who is not here.”

Tragedy Strikes Chennai Air Force Exercise as Crowd Pressure Claims Five Lives

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, October 7, 2024, Chennai: A tragic incident unfolded at Marina Beach in Chennai during a much-anticipated Air Force exercise, leading to the deaths of at least five individuals due to overwhelming crowd pressure. The event, held in celebration of the Indian Air Force’s 92nd anniversary, attracted approximately 1.6 million spectators, resulting in a chaotic scene as attendees gathered to witness the aerial display.

The massive turnout turned Marina Beach into a sea of people, with many eager visitors arriving as early as 7 AM to secure a good viewing spot. The exercise was scheduled to take place between 11:30 AM and 1:30 PM, showcasing fighter jets in action—a spectacle not seen in Chennai for over two decades. Organizers aimed to set a record in the Limca Book of World Records for the largest gathering at such an event.

As the day progressed, the crowd density escalated, leading to numerous attendees suffering from heat-related illnesses. Reports indicate that about 150 individuals required first aid, and many were later admitted to hospitals for further treatment. Eyewitness accounts describe a suffocating environment, with little room to move, exacerbating the distress among the crowd.

Criticism has emerged regarding the police and event management, with allegations that there was no effective plan to manage the large influx of spectators. Many attendees have questioned why such a significant gathering was allowed without adequate crowd control measures, especially given the safety risks involved.

One visitor recounted the overwhelming experience, stating, “The crowd was suffocating. There was no room to move. People were falling ill all around me.” The incident has raised urgent questions about the preparedness of authorities to handle large public events and the measures in place to ensure the safety of attendees.

As investigations begin into this tragic occurrence, there are calls for accountability from both the police and the Air Force regarding the management of the event. Community leaders and citizens alike are urging for a thorough review of safety protocols to prevent future tragedies at large gatherings. The impact of this event has left a somber mark on what was intended to be a celebratory occasion, reminding all of the critical importance of crowd safety and management. Traffic was stopped on the road next to Marina Beach, forcing attendees to walk 3-4 kilometers in intense heat, which caused many to fall ill.

Civic Volunteer Alleges Molestation by Park Street Sub-Inspector Amid Rising Concerns Over Police Conduct

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, October 7, 2024, Calcutta: In a shocking incident that has raised serious questions about safety and conduct within the police force, a sub-inspector from the Park Street police station has been arrested on charges of molesting a civic volunteer. The case, which comes amid a wave of recent incidents of violence and harassment, has sparked widespread outrage and concern regarding the safety of women in the city.

The accused sub-inspector was apprehended following a complaint from the civic volunteer, who alleged that he molested her during a clothing distribution event organized by the police in the Park Street area. According to reports, the incident occurred when the volunteer was called into the sub-inspector’s rest room under the pretense of receiving new clothes for the upcoming Puja celebrations. It is alleged that during this interaction, the officer inappropriately touched her, constituting an act of molestation.

The arrest of a police officer on such serious charges has intensified scrutiny of the law enforcement agency’s integrity and the safety measures in place for women in Calcutta. The incident raises alarming questions: if a civic volunteer can face such behavior within the confines of a police station, what does this mean for the broader community?

Former police chief Arindam Acharya commented on the situation, stating, “If the police, who are supposed to ensure safety during Puja celebrations, engage in such misconduct, what hope do we have for public safety?” He noted that multiple complaints have been lodged against police personnel recently, and although some actions have been taken, the persistence of such behavior is troubling.

The sub-inspector is set to be presented in Alipore court as investigations continue. The case has reignited discussions about police accountability and the urgent need for reforms to protect vulnerable individuals who seek assistance from law enforcement.

As the investigation unfolds, community leaders and citizens alike are calling for swift justice and a thorough examination of police practices to restore trust and ensure the safety of all citizens, particularly women, in the city.
