Youth Trinamool Leader Fatally Shot in Front of Party Office in Howrah

Qadir, who was also a member of the Howrah Municipality representing ward number 31, was fatally attacked at around 10:30 p.m. by two unidentified assailants.


According to witnesses, the attackers approached on a motorcycle and fired multiple rounds at Qadir from point-blank range. The Yuva Trinamool leader was struck by 2-3 bullets before the assailants fled the scene. Despite being rushed to the trauma care center at SSKM Hospital, Qadir was declared dead on arrival.

Local law enforcement, including officials from the Shivpur police station, Howrah City Police, and detectives, promptly arrived at the scene to investigate. While the exact motive behind the shooting remains unclear, initial police reports suggest that the attack could be linked to an old rivalry.

The Supreme Court’s ruling on Wednesday not only stayed the High Court’s verdict but also granted permission for the metro expansion to continue, provided it adheres to environmental regulations.

During the proceedings, Gupta highlighted the extensive tree removal planned for a 10-kilometer extension of the metro, arguing that a significant number of trees were being cut without the necessary permissions. PTI, Calcutta, 22.10.24 :West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday said the state administration was ready to respond to any disaster that could occur due to an impending cyclone and announced that primary and secondary schools in nine districts would remain closed from Wednesday to October 26 as a precautionary measure.

She said teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and SDRF have already been deployed and integrated control rooms, at both state and district levels, become functional 24X7.

A well-marked low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal intensified into a depression on Tuesday as it rolled towards the eastern coast with the likelihood of turning into a severe cyclonic storm, the IMD said.

“Our government is ready to face this cyclonic storm. We have already started integrated control rooms at state and district levels and they are working 24X7. As a precautionary measure, fishermen have been asked not to venture into the seas. Public address systems are in place in the coastal areas. The district magistrates (DMs) and Superintendents of police (SPs) have been asked to keep their eyes open till the situation normalises,” Banerjee said.

As per the prediction of the India Meteorological Department, the weather system may gain strength and the impending cyclone make landfall somewhere between Puri and Sagar Island.

“The wind speed may reach above 110 km per hour,” she added.

The IMD, in its bulletin, said the well-marked low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal concentrated into a depression and lay centred at 700 km away from Paradip in Odisha and 750 km from Sagar Island in West Bengal around 8.30 am on Tuesday.

The depression will further intensify into a cyclonic storm by October 23 and cross north Odisha and southern West Bengal coasts between Puri and Sagar Island in the early morning hours of October 25 as a severe cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 100-110 kmph, gusting to 120 kmph, it said.

The Bengal CM said districts of South and North 24 Parganas, Purba Medinipur and its coastal areas are expected to be affected severely.

“Besides the neighbouring districts of Paschim Medinipur, Bankura, Jhargram and Hooghly are likely to be affected. Schools will remain closed in these districts from October 23 to 26 as a precautionary measure. We do not want to take any risks and do not want anyone to face danger. Schools and colleges are sometimes used as shelters for people,” she said.

According to a notification issued by the state government, educational institutes will remain closed in the districts of North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Purba Medinipur, Paschim Medinipur, Jhargram, Bankura, Howrah, Hooghly and Kolkata from Wednesday till October 26.

The Bengal CM said the district administrations have been asked to shift all those residing in low-lying areas of these districts to safe places.

“We have started taking measures since yesterday. The ferry movements in coastal areas and districts will remain non-operational till the situation returns to normalcy. Tourist movements have been monitored as a precautionary measure,” she said.

Banerjee said Chief Secretary Manoj Pant held a meeting with all the departments, NDRF, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), power utilities and municipal corporations concerned.

Forecasters warn that the depression will intensify into a deep depression and move northwest by the morning of October 22. It is expected to strengthen into a cyclonic storm by October 23, posing a serious threat to coastal regions.

The projected landfall is likely to occur along the coasts of West Bengal and Odisha, with a wind speed ranging from 90-110 km/h and gusts potentially reaching up to 120 km/h. This could bring heavy to very heavy rainfall to the region, raising concerns about flooding and widespread damage. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red, yellow, and orange alerts for several states, including Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, and the northeastern states.

While the exact path of the cyclone remains uncertain, the coastal areas of Odisha and West Bengal are on high alert. More details regarding the cyclone’s trajectory will be released over the next 24 to 48 hours. Both states are expected to experience the full impact of the storm starting October 23, with the cyclone likely making landfall on October 24.

According to sources, the fracas began when Banerjee entered into a verbal spat with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MPs, particularly Abhijit Gangopadhyay. As the discussion on the Waqf Bill grew more heated, tempers flared, and Kalyan Banerjee reportedly smashed a glass water bottle on the table in frustration. Supreme Court Rebukes ED for Overreach in Chhattisgarh Corruption Case Arrest

The court raised serious concerns about the agency’s conduct, specifically questioning the legality of the arrest, and accused the ED of overreach in its investigative actions.


The case stems from allegations of large-scale excise corruption amounting to ₹2,100 crore during the tenure of the Congress-led government in Chhattisgarh between 2019 and 2022. The ED, tasked with probing financial crimes, initiated its investigation into the matter. In April 2024, Anil Tuteja, a high-ranking bureaucrat at the time, was arrested as part of the probe.

During a hearing on Monday, the Supreme Court expressed its displeasure over the manner in which the ED conducted the arrest. Referring to Article 21 of the Indian Constitution, which safeguards the right to life and personal liberty, the court reminded the agency that no individual’s fundamental rights should be compromised. “There is something called Article 21,” the court firmly stated. “It guarantees a citizen’s right to life and liberty, and the central agency cannot strip someone of these basic rights.”

The defense counsel representing Tuteja narrated a series of events that highlighted procedural concerns. According to the lawyer, Tuteja had appeared at the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) office in Bengal for questioning on April 20. ED officers, present during the interrogation, issued a summons to Tuteja which was set to expire by noon that day. Given that the period had already lapsed, Tuteja refused to accept the notice. Following this, the ED issued a fresh summons instructing him to report to their office later in the evening at 5:30 p.m.

After enduring a day of questioning at the ACB office, Tuteja was reportedly taken to the ED office where he was interrogated throughout the night. He was arrested in the early hours of April 21, sparking outrage from both Tuteja’s legal team and now, the Supreme Court.

The apex court harshly questioned the need for the ED to conduct its inquiry simultaneously with the ongoing investigation by the ACB. “Why did the ED feel the need to intervene during the ACB’s questioning? How can the ED issue a notice in the middle of another agency’s inquiry? Such haste is not even seen in cases of terrorism or criminal litigation,” the court remarked, calling the ED’s actions a “serious breach.”

In response to the court’s blistering critique, the ED maintained that Tuteja had willingly visited their office and was not forced into custody. However, Tuteja’s lawyer countered this claim, insisting that the arrest was illegal and demanded his client’s immediate bail.

The Supreme Court’s reprimand underscores a growing scrutiny of investigative agencies’ methods, especially in cases involving high-profile individuals. The court has reserved its final judgment on the bail plea, signaling that the agency’s actions will continue to be under a legal microscope.
