TMC Leader Anubrata Mondal Skips Police Summons in Derogatory Remarks Case, Cites Health Reasons

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews | June 1, 2025 | Kolkata  : Trinamool Congress leader Anubrata Mondal did not appear before the police on Saturday, May 31, as summoned in connection with an inquiry into the alleged use of inappropriate and offensive language during a phone conversation with a police officer. According to officials, four of Mondal’s legal representatives appeared on his behalf at the office of the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) in Bolpur.

The police have issued a second notice requesting Mondal’s appearance on Sunday, June 1, at 11 a.m. for questioning. One of his lawyers stated that Mondal is currently unwell and unable to attend in person, and he may instead appear on Monday. Sources suggest that Mondal may also file for anticipatory bail prior to presenting himself before the authorities.

The incident, which led to the filing of a First Information Report (FIR) under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), involves an allegedly disrespectful exchange between Mondal and an officer posted at Bolpur Police Station. The controversy prompted a strong response from the Trinamool Congress, which condemned the language used and urged Mondal to issue an unconditional apology.

Mondal complied with the party’s directive by submitting a written apology shortly after the TMC’s official statement. In his note, he expressed regret and stated that he never intended to show disrespect to any member of the police force, regardless of their rank.

While Mondal did not attend the scheduled questioning in person, his legal team—comprising senior lawyers including Bipadataran Bhattacharya and Sandeep Sarkar—visited the SDPO office in Bolpur on his behalf. The police have confirmed that the legal representatives presented relevant documents explaining the reason for his absence.

The case has attracted considerable attention in Birbhum district, where Mondal has long been a prominent political figure. His absence on Saturday led to speculation about possible arrest, though no such action has been taken at this stage. According to sources close to Mondal, he remains cautious about the proceedings and may seek legal protection before complying with further summons.

The situation continues to develop as authorities await Mondal’s personal appearance, either on Sunday as per the latest notice or on a later date, subject to his health condition and legal course of action.

Manipur BJP MLAs Unite in Push for Popular Government Amid Ongoing Crisis

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, May 31, 2025, Delhi:

Amid the prolonged conflict and ongoing President’s rule in Manipur, a significant political development unfolded on Friday as 23 BJP MLAs from the state convened in a crucial meeting and pledged to work together towards forming a popular government. The MLAs collectively resolved to set aside personal ambitions and prioritize the larger interests of the state and its people.

Manipur has been under President’s rule since February 13, with the state assembly in suspended animation. The unified stance taken by these BJP legislators is being viewed as a potentially pivotal moment in the ongoing efforts to restore democratic normalcy. Of the 37 BJP MLAs in the 60-member assembly, seven from the Kuki-Jo community did not participate in the meeting. Notably, both supporters and opponents of former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh were present, although Singh himself, along with Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata Singh—previously known as a vocal critic of Singh—did not sign the joint statement.

This development follows a separate meeting held on May 28, where 10 NDA MLAs met Manipur Governor Ajay Bhalla and claimed the support of 44 legislators to form a government.

In their post-meeting statement, the 23 BJP MLAs expressed a commitment to political consensus, stating, “As per the strong desire of the people, we have discussed the path to political consensus. We have decided to forego personal interests for the greater good of the state, the people, and the BJP and its allies.” The statement also conveyed a united belief in the urgency and possibility of a lasting resolution to the crisis, emphasizing the importance of an inclusive dialogue involving representatives from all communities in Manipur.

The MLAs backed the idea of establishing an impartial dialogue platform to build trust and consensus between the Meitei and Kuki-Jo communities. They also proposed the appointment of an unbiased peace envoy or a panel of respected individuals to facilitate the process, with the recommendation directed to the Governor and the central leadership.

The statement highlighted that resolving the crisis will require both political action and concrete security measures, including the recovery of looted weapons across regions and efforts to rebuild inter-community relations at the grassroots level.

Clashes between the Meitei and Kuki-Jo communities, which began on May 3, 2023, have led to over 250 deaths and displaced thousands of residents. Against this backdrop of prolonged unrest, the BJP MLAs’ renewed commitment is being perceived as a hopeful step towards reconciliation and the eventual formation of a representative government.

The coming days will reveal whether this expression of unity can indeed translate into meaningful progress and peace in the troubled northeastern state.

Controversial Arrest of Hindu Influencer Sharmistha Sparks Political and Social Outrage in Kolkata

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, Kolkata, May 31, 2025 : The arrest of social media influencer Sharmistha Panoli by the Kolkata Police has ignited a fierce political and social debate. The 22-year-old law student and online personality was taken into custody on May 29, 2025, in Haryana’s Gurugram for allegedly making controversial remarks related to India’s Operation Sindoor, which sparked widespread outrage and led to her facing online death threats, including rape and violence.

The arrest follows a video posted by Panoli on May 14, where she made derogatory comments accusing Bollywood actors of remaining silent on Operation Sindoor, the Indian military operation in response to a deadly terrorist attack on Hindu pilgrims in Pahalgam, Kashmir. The attack, which took place on April 22, 2025, left 24 Hindu pilgrims dead, allegedly targeted due to their religious identity. In the video, Panoli voiced her protest against Pakistan’s alleged involvement, leading to her controversial statements that were seen as offensive to a particular religious community.

Legal and Procedural Debate:

While Panoli quickly deleted the video and publicly apologized for her remarks, the backlash continued. Her video went viral, particularly among a section of the Muslim community in Pakistan and India, where it was perceived as an “insult to Islam and Prophet Muhammad.” A coordinated online campaign followed, with threats against Panoli’s life, including rape, death, and calls for her beheading (a reference to the infamous “saar tan se juda” jihad slogan).

The Kolkata Police, however, defended their actions, stating that all legal procedures were followed during Panoli’s arrest. According to authorities, a warrant for Panoli’s arrest had been issued after she failed to respond to multiple notices. The police traveled over 1,500 km to arrest her in Gurugram, where she was brought to Kolkata on transit remand. The Alipore Court then sent her to judicial custody until June 13, 2025.

In contrast, social activists and some online users have rallied behind Panoli, arguing that her arrest was politically motivated and unlawful. Sunaina Hole, a prominent social activist, criticized the police, claiming they had initially lacked proper arrest documents. While this was later resolved with a magistrate’s order, Hole’s accusations of procedural missteps have drawn attention to the legal questions surrounding Panoli’s arrest.

Political Repercussions:

The incident has set off a political firestorm in West Bengal, particularly between the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and opposition parties. The opposition BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) has seized on the controversy to launch scathing attacks against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s government. BJP leaders, including Khagen Murmu, have alleged that the state government is “appeasing” certain communities at the expense of Hindus, accusing Banerjee of turning the state into a “Bangladesh-like” territory where Hindus are under constant threat.

BJP leader Dilip Ghosh took the criticism further, linking the situation to broader religious tensions in the state. “In this state, flags of Hamas, Palestine, Pakistan, and even ISIS are seen. Yet the Ram Navami flag is being removed from cars. Is Kolkata being transformed into Dhaka?” Ghosh said, criticizing the state’s political climate, which he argues undermines Hindu identity.

A Divided Public:

The public response to Panoli’s arrest has been sharply divided. Many have expressed support for the influencer, calling for justice and fairness in handling online speech. Some critics of her arrest have noted that while her remarks may have been inappropriate, the threats of violence against her should have been investigated first. Meanwhile, others argue that Panoli’s video was a clear case of incitement and should have consequences.

The situation has also drawn attention to the growing influence of social media in Indian politics and society. Influencers like Panoli, who have large followings, now face heightened scrutiny, with their online actions having the potential to stir controversy and provoke violence, as evidenced by the online mob that targeted her.

BJP Protests and Future Developments:

The BJP has announced a state-wide protest in response to Panoli’s arrest, with planned rallies and demonstrations across West Bengal. A major protest program is also scheduled for April 12, 2025, during Hanuman Jayanti, which the BJP sees as an opportunity to further galvanize public opposition to the TMC’s policies and actions.

Meanwhile, Panoli’s legal team is preparing for her court appearance, where she will be seeking bail. Her arrest has also raised questions about free speech, the role of social media influencers, and the balance between protecting public order and ensuring individual rights in an increasingly polarized political climate.

As the situation continues to unfold, both legal and political experts are closely monitoring the developments, particularly as it pertains to the freedom of expression in the digital age and the challenges of balancing national security, communal harmony, and individual rights.

Amit Shah to Visit Kolkata Ahead of Key Elections, Political Strategy to Take Center Stage

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, May 30, 2025, Kolkata : Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to West Bengal, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to arrive in the state on May 31 for a two-day visit, where he will engage in both government and political activities. Shah’s visit is seen as a significant move ahead of the state assembly elections next year, as well as the upcoming by-elections for the Kaliganj Assembly seat in Nadia district next month.

Shah will be staying at a hotel located on the northern outskirts of Kolkata, near Salt Lake, where he is expected to hold several key meetings. On Sunday, May 31, he will inaugurate a new building for the Central Forensic Laboratory in Rajarhat-Newtown, marking the government portion of his visit. Following that, Shah will attend a political gathering at the Netaji Indoor Stadium, where he is scheduled to meet with BJP leaders and party workers from across the state. The gathering will include district presidents, mandal presidents, and office bearers from the BJP’s grassroots level, showcasing the party’s organizational strength.

Later in the evening, Shah will meet with the state leadership of the BJP at the hotel in Salt Lake for a detailed strategy session. During this meeting, political observers expect Shah to outline the party’s campaign and organizational plans for the forthcoming elections, with a particular focus on addressing issues like anti-incumbency and corruption concerning the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the West Bengal government.

The following day, on June 1, Shah will address a rally of BJP workers at the Netaji Indoor Stadium. This rally is expected to see participation from over 10,000 BJP workers, including all elected MPs and legislators of the party, as confirmed by BJP’s former national secretary, Rahul Sinha. Shah’s rally is anticipated to be a major show of strength for the party as it prepares for both the 2026 state elections and the upcoming by-polls.

Political analysts have noted the significance of the series of visits by top BJP leaders to West Bengal, with Modi’s visit earlier in the month and now Shah’s visit. These tours are seen as key to setting the tone for the BJP’s electoral strategy in the state, where the Trinamool Congress has been the dominant force for years. The party’s leaders are likely to use the upcoming months to bolster their position, particularly as they focus on issues that could resonate with voters, including the growing concerns around corruption and governance.

Shah is expected to return to New Delhi on the evening of June 1, concluding his two-day visit to West Bengal. The BJP’s leadership hopes that these visits will energize its workers and provide a clear roadmap for the party’s electoral campaign in the state.

Chandrima Bhattacharya Appointed Head of Trinamool Legal Cell Amid Party Reshuffle

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, May 30, 2025, Kolkata : In a strategic move following the recent reshuffle within the Trinamool Congress (TMC), Chandrima Bhattacharya has been entrusted with the crucial responsibility of heading the party’s Legal Cell. Bhattacharya, a seasoned lawyer by profession, replaces Malay Ghatak in this role. Her appointment marks a significant shift as the party looks to strengthen its legal apparatus amid ongoing challenges in the courts.

Bhattacharya is no stranger to leadership roles within the party. In addition to her new position as the chairman of the Legal Cell, she is currently the president of the TMC’s Women’s Cell at the organizational level. Moreover, Bhattacharya is serving as the Minister of State for Finance in the West Bengal government. Her diverse portfolio of responsibilities reflects her prominence within the party.

Before this appointment, Bhattacharya had served as the state’s Law Minister for four years, gaining considerable experience in legal matters. Her leadership during her tenure as Law Minister was noted for her proactive approach to various legal and administrative issues. Now, with the growing number of legal challenges the state and party face, including setbacks in multiple court cases, the question arises: is the party attempting to turn things around by placing Bhattacharya at the helm of the Legal Cell?

Chandrima Bhattacharya has always been entrusted with significant roles, especially in legal matters. Her reputation as a competent and experienced legal professional has made her the go-to person for the party whenever critical legal representation or intervention is required. She has previously represented the state government in Delhi and has been involved in high-profile legal proceedings, making her a natural fit to head the TMC’s Legal Cell at this juncture.

The state has seen a series of legal challenges, some resulting in unfavorable verdicts, prompting the TMC to reassess its strategy. Bhattacharya’s appointment could signal a renewed effort by the party to navigate these challenges more effectively, leveraging her legal expertise to handle ongoing and future cases.

As the new head of the Legal Cell, Chandrima Bhattacharya will play a key role in shaping the party’s legal strategy and ensuring its position in the courts, as the party seeks to regain its footing in the legal arena

Five New COVID-19 Cases Reported in Kolkata; Medical Authorities Urge Preparedness Amid Rising Infections

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, Kolkata, May 30, 2025 : In a concerning development, five individuals in Kolkata have tested positive for COVID-19, with all cases identified at a private hospital in Alipore. The patients, who were admitted with symptoms such as cold, cough, fever, shortness of breath, and pneumonia, are receiving treatment in the hospital. One of the five patients is currently in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), according to hospital sources.

Medical professionals have expressed concerns about the rising number of cases and emphasized the importance of paying special attention to vulnerable groups, particularly the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions. While the situation is not as severe as previous outbreaks, healthcare experts stress the need for immediate preparation to manage potential escalations.

Doctors are calling for the stockpiling of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kits and other essential medical supplies, to ensure that healthcare facilities are adequately equipped should the situation worsen. Despite the relatively low numbers compared to past waves, health officials urge the public to remain vigilant, as the risk of further spread remains.

As the number of cases gradually increases, both medical staff and local authorities are on high alert, working to ensure that all necessary precautions are in place to contain the virus and safeguard public health. The hospital in Alipore has also assured that all necessary safety protocols are being followed to prevent further transmission.

Teachers’ Forum Plans Protest March in Kolkata Following Death of Former Job Aspirant

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, May 30, 2025, Kolkata:

A wave of grief and frustration has swept through West Bengal’s community of unemployed teaching job aspirants following the reported death of Praveen Karmakar, a former candidate who had long struggled with the emotional toll of not securing a government teaching post. His passing has sparked renewed outrage, with many alleging systemic recruitment irregularities and prolonged delays in justice.

In response, the ‘Unemployed Teachers–Teachers Unity Forum’ announced in a press conference on Thursday that it will stage a symbolic protest march in Kolkata on Friday. The demonstration, described as a form of “half-clothed procession,” is aimed at drawing attention to what participants describe as long-standing grievances with the state’s teacher recruitment process.

According to the Forum, the protest seeks to pressure the state government and education department to act on several key demands:

A comprehensive and expedited investigation into alleged recruitment corruption, including the prompt release of the CBI’s findings.

Immediate dismissal of individuals allegedly appointed through irregular means, and the recruitment of eligible candidates.

An inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death of the former job aspirant, with appropriate compensation to his family.

Re-evaluation of all previously rejected candidates and steps to facilitate their fair recruitment.

A Forum spokesperson remarked during the press conference that the protest is not only a call for justice but also a symbolic reflection of the deprivation experienced by thousands of qualified candidates. “This is about dignity, transparency, and the future of our education system,” the spokesperson said.

The announcement has reportedly prompted administrative and police officials to convene meetings to discuss security and traffic arrangements for Friday’s planned demonstration. Law enforcement agencies are expected to be on high alert to ensure public safety and order during the event.

The protest adds to the mounting pressure on the state government amid ongoing scrutiny over teacher recruitment practices. With emotions running high and the issue gaining wider public attention, all eyes are on how the state administration will respond to the unfolding developments.

Leader of Opposition Raises Concerns Over Recruitment Processes and OBC Inclusion During Tiranga Yatra

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, May 30, 2025, Kolkata: During a public address in Nadia’s Dhantala as part of the Tiranga Yatra on Thursday, West Bengal Leader of the Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, voiced criticism regarding certain administrative actions of the state government, particularly concerning the School Service Commission (SSC) and the recruitment process in the education sector.

Adhikari alleged that a recent notification issued in the name of the SSC had not followed appropriate procedural norms, claiming that such notifications should come directly from the commission itself, rather than being announced by the Chief Minister. He further commented on the announcement of an increase in vacant posts within the state’s recruitment framework, suggesting that such measures must align with existing legal frameworks, including the directives of the Supreme Court.

In his address, Adhikari expressed solidarity with job seekers and unemployed educators in the state. He asserted that the recruitment issues stemmed from systemic administrative failures and called for corrective measures to restore fairness and transparency. While speaking to the media, he assured that any steps taken outside the bounds of the law would be opposed and addressed accordingly.

Adhikari also questioned the inclusion of certain communities in the state’s Other Backward Classes (OBC) list. Referring to the addition of 111 communities, a majority of which are reportedly under judicial review, he raised concerns about the implications for social equity and ongoing legal scrutiny.

The Leader of the Opposition concluded by stating that his focus remains on safeguarding the rights of job aspirants and ensuring lawful governance. His comments are part of a broader political discourse in the lead-up to the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, with employment and education likely to remain central issues in the public debate.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah to Visit West Bengal on June 1 for Party Rally and Strategic Meeting

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, May 28, 2025, Kolkata :

Union Home Minister Amit Shah will be visiting West Bengal on June 1 to attend a central government event, likely to be held in Kolkata, according to BJP sources. He will be on a two-day visit to the state over the weekend.

On June 1, Shah will address a rally of party workers scheduled to take place at the Netaji Indoor Stadium in central Kolkata. He is expected to return to New Delhi in the evening of the same day.

During the visit, the Home Minister will also hold strategic discussions with the BJP’s core committee members and MLAs from the state. A BJP source indicated that election preparations for the upcoming West Bengal Assembly Elections, due in 2026, will be a major point of discussion.

Although there were initial objections from some quarters of the Bengal BJP due to the visit coinciding with Jamai Sashti, a significant family-oriented celebration in Bengal, the schedule was eventually confirmed. State BJP president Sukanta Majumdar announced that the Home Minister would visit on June 1, and a working meeting would be held at the Netaji Indoor Stadium. The party has instructed that leaders and workers from all sections must attend the event.

Some within the Bengal BJP had expressed concern about hosting such a major political event on Jamai Sashti, citing family obligations. However, Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari stated that the family celebrations would conclude by the afternoon, and there would be no conflict with the party’s programme. After extended discussions between the central and state leadership, it was decided to go ahead with the June 1 visit.

On that day, Amit Shah will hold an organizational meeting with Bengal’s BJP leaders and officially kick off the 2026 election campaign. It remains to be seen how many seats he will target in the upcoming election, but enthusiasm among the party’s cadre is reportedly at an all-time high.

Former BJP national secretary Rahul Sinha stated that more than 10,000 party workers, including all elected MPs and MLAs, will attend the rally.

Political analysts view the timing of this visit — closely following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the state — as highly significant, especially with the state assembly elections looming next year and a by-election in the Kaliganj Assembly constituency in Nadia district next month.

A member of the state BJP committee revealed that in the May 31 meeting with the state leadership, the Home Minister is expected to present the party’s political, organizational, and campaign strategy for the upcoming elections. He is also likely to unveil a blueprint focusing on anti-incumbency issues and allegations of corruption against both the West Bengal state government and the ruling Trinamool Congress.

This visit is seen as a crucial moment in shaping the BJP’s roadmap for West Bengal, signaling a ramp-up in its electoral machinery as the state heads toward a high-stakes political battle.

Army Jawan Purnam Saw Returns Home After Captivity in Kashmir; Warm Welcome by Hooghly Locals and Trinamool Congress Delegation

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, May 28, 2025,  Hooghly :
After being held captive by Pakistan for 22 days during a battle at Payalgaon in Kashmir, Indian Army jawan Purnam Sau, a native of Rishra, Hooghly, has safely returned to the country. His return has sparked a wave of relief and celebration in his hometown, where representatives from various political and social groups gathered to honour him.

In a coordinated effort between the Government of India and the Government of West Bengal, Purnam was repatriated to India, marking a significant diplomatic and military achievement. On Wednesday, a 10-member delegation, acting on the direction of Sheikh Raju Master, founder of Bangla Hridoy Mamata Social Media, visited Sau’s residence to extend their greetings and express their gratitude for his service and bravery.

The delegation included leaders and members of the Trinamool Congress Social Media Cell, Mamata and Chunchura City TMC Committee, and several distinguished figures from the local community. Among those present were Chunchura Municipality Councillor Rita Dutta, District Social Media President Swapan Dutta, State Committee Member Mohan Singh Roy, Convener Abhishek Gupta, prominent lawyer and social worker Ujjwal Chakraborty, journalist Rajkumar Prasad, and other supporters.

Addressing the media, Convener Abhishek Gupta described Purnam Sau as a “symbol of pride for Hooghly”, and expressed his gratitude to the Indian Army, the central government, and the state administration for their roles in securing Sau’s release. He further acknowledged the personal intervention of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who had maintained close contact with Sau’s family throughout the ordeal and fulfilled her promise by ensuring his return within three days.

Purnam Sau, visibly emotional, thanked the Trinamool Congress Committee and Bangla Hridoy Mamata Social Media for their support and warm welcome. His return stands as a testament to the strength and resolve of India’s armed forces and the collaborative efforts of both state and central governments in upholding the safety and dignity of the nation’s soldiers.

CRPF Jawan Arrested for Spying for Pakistan, Puts National Security in Jeopardy

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, May 27, 2025, Delhi : A shocking betrayal has rocked India’s security apparatus as CRPF jawan Motiram Jat has been arrested on charges of spying for Pakistan. This major breach of national security was uncovered by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which has revealed that Jat had been leaking sensitive military information to Pakistani intelligence agencies for the past two years. The revelation has sent shockwaves throughout the defense establishment, raising concerns about the safety of the country’s security systems.

Motiram Jat, who was stationed in Pahelgaon, a sensitive area of Kashmir, has been accused of secretly sharing critical details related to the Indian Army’s operations. According to sources, Jat had access to classified information, including the movement of Kashmiri jawans, army patrol routes, and the locations of army camps. His actions are believed to have directly undermined the country’s security, and investigators are now piecing together the extent of the damage he may have caused.

Details of the Espionage Activity

The timeline of Jat’s betrayal appears to coincide with key events in Kashmir. Sources suggest that he was stationed in Pahelgaon just days before the terrorist attack on Baisaran Valley on April 22. Following the attack, he was transferred elsewhere, but investigators suspect he may have handed over vital security information to Pakistani intelligence during this period. The NIA has been working relentlessly to trace all the details of his activities, which include allegedly smuggling classified documents to Pakistani agencies since 2023.

An official statement from the NIA on Monday confirmed that Motiram had been regularly transmitting sensitive materials and receiving financial compensation in return. This money came in various forms—sometimes directly into bank accounts, and at other times through alternative means. Investigators are scrutinizing his mobile phone, laptop, and social media accounts to uncover any further evidence.

The Breakthrough from Operation Sindoor

Indian intelligence agencies first began to uncover this espionage network during Operation Sindoor. It was during this operation that authorities discovered the presence of domestic agents working with Pakistan. The case took a major turn when YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra was arrested, and her interrogation revealed Motiram Jat’s involvement. One lead after another pointed to the CRPF jawan, unraveling the depth of the betrayal.

Motiram was arrested and presented before the special court at Patiala House Court, where he was remanded to NIA custody until June 6. The court’s decision has raised further questions about whether others might be involved in the espionage ring. The NIA is now focusing on potential accomplices and examining the possibility that individuals responsible for the country’s security may themselves be traitors.

A Serious Blow to National Trust

The arrest of Motiram Jat has sent ripples of concern throughout India. The very soldiers who are entrusted with safeguarding the country’s security have now been implicated in espionage, raising alarming questions about the reliability of India’s defense forces. For many, this incident has shattered the perception of safety and trust within the military and security institutions.

As the NIA continues its investigation, there are reports that additional individuals may be under scrutiny. Further arrests could be imminent, as the agency works to uncover the full extent of the espionage operation and its potential impact on national security.

The biggest concern for investigators now is the question of who else might be involved. With Motiram Jat’s arrest, the authorities have taken a significant step toward dismantling the espionage network. However, this breach is a stark reminder that the enemy may not always be on the outside—sometimes, it lurks within. The NIA’s ongoing investigation will determine how far this web of betrayal extends and whether the country’s security infrastructure has been compromised beyond repair.

Mysterious Death in Beleghata: Police Investigate Suicide or Accident After Man Found Dead Near Sales Tax Building

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, May 27, 2025, Kolkata :  A chilling scene unfolded in the busy office area of Beleghata this morning when a person was found dead under mysterious circumstances near the Sales Tax building. At around 10:20 AM, a loud noise startled the usual hustle and bustle of the area, prompting security guards to rush to the spot. What they discovered was nothing short of shocking – a man, floating in blood, his body bruised and lifeless, lying below the multi-storey building.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud crash and rushing to the scene, where they found the victim in a pool of blood. Emergency services were alerted, and police arrived promptly to take the man to NRS Hospital. However, despite efforts to save him, doctors declared him dead on arrival.

The identity of the deceased remains unknown, as no identification documents were found on him. Initial investigations have revealed that the man had entered the building earlier in the day, claiming to be a lawyer. The police are now reviewing CCTV footage from the building and checking the entry register to piece together more details of his movements before the incident.

The primary question surrounding the case is whether the man’s death was the result of suicide or an accident. While police are leaning towards the possibility of suicide, they have yet to draw any definitive conclusions. The investigation remains open, with all angles being thoroughly explored. Was this a tragic act of despair, or could it have been a fatal fall due to an accident?

Further complicating the case, sources have reported that no identity cards or personal belongings were found on the victim, leaving authorities with little to go on. A forensic team has collected samples from the scene, and an autopsy is being conducted to determine the exact cause of death.

The incident follows another recent tragedy in Newtown, where an IT worker took his own life by jumping from an office building, raising concerns about a possible trend of suicides among city workers. Investigators are looking into whether mental health issues played a role in this latest case, though nothing has been confirmed at this stage.

As the investigation continues, police are focusing on uncovering the truth behind the man’s identity and the circumstances surrounding his death. With CCTV footage under review and further questioning to be conducted, authorities are determined to get to the bottom of the case and understand whether this was a case of suicide, an accident, or something else.

Rumours of Mamata Banerjee Stepping Down Stir Up Political Storm in Bengal

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, May 27, 2025, Kolkata :  A wave of speculation is sweeping through Bengal’s political circles as rumours swirl that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee may step down from her position and not be a candidate in the upcoming 2026 assembly elections. These reports, fueled by unnamed sources and social media buzz, have ignited a frenzy within the Trinamool Congress (TMC), with party leaders and political analysts reacting in varied ways.

Within the TMC, reactions have been mixed. Some party members are startled by the rumours, asserting that Mamata Banerjee is the backbone of the party. “Without Mamata Banerjee, the party would be directionless. She isn’t just the leader; she embodies the party’s ideology and strategic vision,” said one senior party leader, dismissing the rumours as unfounded and motivated by ulterior motives. These insiders strongly believe that speculations about Mamata’s departure are baseless and intended to sow division.

In contrast, the opposition has seized upon the news, accusing the ruling party of internal power struggles. “The so-called unity within the TMC is just a facade. A bitter cold war is being fought over leadership, with factions vying for control. The news is likely being spread by those seeking to undermine Mamata’s influence, in favor of a so-called ‘prince’ of the party,” said an opposition leader, adding fuel to the debate.

Political analysts have raised further questions in light of the growing controversy. “The TMC has always been synonymous with Mamata Banerjee’s leadership. If she were to step aside, who within the party would be able to lead it into the 2026 elections?” they ask. Some speculate that the rumours may be a tactical maneuver within the party to create space for emerging leaders, while others argue that the opposition might be deliberately attempting to destabilize the TMC by spreading confusion.

Despite the intense buzz, there has been no official statement from the Trinamool Congress regarding Mamata Banerjee’s political future. As of now, the party is remaining tight-lipped on the matter, though the speculation shows no signs of slowing down.

With the 2026 assembly elections still some time away, the political landscape in Bengal is already fraught with uncertainty. The swirling rumours and their potential impact on the state’s political scene will likely become clearer in the coming months. But for now, Bengal remains caught in a storm of speculation, leaving the future of its leadership uncertain.

Controversy Surrounds ‘Jagannath Dham’ in Digha as Puri Temple Authorities Seek Legal Protection for Sacred Terms

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, May 27, 2025, Kolkata :  The Jagannath Temple in Digha, which has seen a significant surge in visitors since its inauguration, is at the center of a growing controversy. The temple’s success has raised concerns among the authorities of the Puri Jagannath Temple, who are now planning to take legal action to protect the exclusive use of sacred terms associated with the Lord Jagannath tradition. The Puri temple administration is preparing to apply for patents on several key phrases, including ‘Jagannath Dham’, ‘Maha Prasad’, ‘Nilachal Dham’, ‘Srikshetra’, ‘Purushottamdham’, and the temple’s logo.

Arvind Padhi, the chief administrator of the Puri Jagannath Temple, emphasized the significance of this legal move. “It is critical to protect the sanctity, heritage, and unique identity of the Jagannath temple,” Padhi said. “The application for patents is an essential step to prevent the indiscriminate use of sacred terms related to Lord Jagannath, which are of immense cultural and religious importance.”

This decision comes amid ongoing controversy over the use of the term ‘Jagannath Dham’ at the newly constructed temple in Digha. The Digha temple, which is modeled after the famous Puri Srimandir, has faced criticism from various quarters, including Shankaracharya of Puri, who raised concerns about the appropriateness of the term ‘Jagannath Dham’ being used for a temple outside of Puri. In response to the growing backlash, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who inaugurated the Digha temple last month, strongly defended the project.

During her comments, Banerjee dismissed the controversy as unnecessary, accusing the Odisha government of overreacting. “When Odisha faces a shortage of potatoes, Bengal helps. When a cyclone hits and damages infrastructure, Bengal sends engineers to assist. Most tourists visiting Puri are from Bengal. What is the problem if we build a Jagannath Dham in Digha?” she stated. The Chief Minister also criticized the violence surrounding the issue, remarking, “We all go to Puri without asking too many questions. Why should there be so much violence over this?”

In response, Odisha’s Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan expressed concerns about the sensitivity of religious matters, particularly with regard to the four main ‘dhams’ of India. Harichandan indicated that the Odisha government would formally request the West Bengal authorities to reconsider the use of the term ‘Jagannath Dham’ for the Digha temple.

As tensions continue to rise over the issue, both states appear to be digging in their heels, with no clear resolution in sight. The legal steps taken by the Puri temple authorities could be a pivotal development in determining the future use of these sacred names and terms, potentially setting a precedent for how sacred intellectual property is handled in the context of religious and cultural heritage.

India’s Active Covid-19 Cases Rise to 1,009 Amid Detection of New Subvariants

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, New Delhi, May 26, 2025  :  India is witnessing a concerning increase in Covid-19 cases, with official data from the Union Health Ministry revealing that the number of active infections has risen to 1,009 as of Monday. Just a week earlier, on May 19, the active case count stood at 257. States such as Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra are currently reporting the highest numbers.

The Health Ministry has confirmed the recent identification of two new Covid-19 subvariants in India — NB.1.8.1 and LF.7. A case of NB.1.8.1 was recorded in Tamil Nadu in April, while four cases of LF.7 were detected in May. Both subvariants have been classified by the World Health Organization as Variants Under Monitoring (VUM), indicating that they are being observed but have not yet been categorized as either Variants of Concern or Variants of Interest.

Health experts suggest that these subvariants may be contributing to the current spike in Covid-19 cases across parts of Asia, particularly in countries like China, Singapore, and Hong Kong, where similar trends have been noted. In India, while there is a marked rise in infections, most of the affected individuals have exhibited only mild symptoms and have recovered at home.

To ensure ongoing vigilance, surveillance efforts are being intensified through the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) and the Indian Council of Medical Research’s (ICMR) Respiratory Virus Sentinel Surveillance Network. The Health Ministry has reiterated that the situation is under constant review at both the national and global levels.

According to the Ministry, although some countries including Singapore and Hong Kong have reported rising infections, their respective health authorities have indicated that the new subvariants are not more transmissible or severe than earlier strains.

While the overall nature of the infections remains mild, public health experts are urging citizens to remain cautious. They emphasize the continued importance of preventive practices such as frequent handwashing, wearing face masks, and avoiding crowded places to limit further spread.

Government Employees Council Urges West Bengal Government to Implement Supreme Court’s Order on Dearness Allowance

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, May 24, 2025, Kolkata :
The Confederation of State Government Employees, West Bengal issued a formal letter to the West Bengal government, urging immediate action on the Supreme Court’s recent directive regarding the payment of dearness allowance (DA) to state government employees. The letter references a crucial order handed down by the Supreme Court on May 16, which mandates that the state government clear at least 25% of the outstanding DA dues to all employees. The Supreme Court’s order was issued in favor of a May 20, 2022, judgment by the Division Bench of the Calcutta High Court, which had ruled that the West Bengal government must address the DA arrears.

The state government had previously challenged the Calcutta High Court’s judgment by appealing to the Supreme Court, but the apex court upheld the lower court’s decision, reaffirming the need for the outstanding dues to be cleared. The Government Employees Council, in their letter, has attached a copy of the Supreme Court’s order and made a formal request for the state government to implement the directive within the next six weeks.

The council emphasized that this order, if promptly acted upon, could finally resolve the long-standing issue of DA arrears, providing much-needed relief to lakhs of government employees in the state. They believe that the implementation of this order will help end the prolonged wait for the employees and restore their financial stability.

The council’s demand highlights the importance of respecting judicial orders and calls for the government to act swiftly to ensure the payment of the outstanding dearness allowance, which has been a point of contention for a significant period.

Hooghly District Administration Gears Up for Safe and Smooth Tarakeswar Srabani Mela with New Safety Measures

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, May 24, 2025, Kolkata:
With the Tarakeswar Srabani Mela just around the corner, the Hooghly district administration has stepped up its preparations for the grand event, focusing on passenger safety and crowd control. A high-level administrative meeting was held today in Singur to discuss the necessary measures for the festival, which is set to begin in two months. The meeting was convened against the backdrop of recent safety concerns raised by the Kumbh Mela incident in Uttar Pradesh, where several fatalities occurred due to crowd-related accidents despite extensive safety protocols.

Officials acknowledged that last year, about 24 lakh devotees attended the Mela, and this year, the turnout is expected to be even higher. In response, the administration has introduced additional measures to ensure the safety and convenience of the devotees. Minister Becharam Manna, who was present at the meeting, emphasized the need to prevent any accidents similar to the Kumbh Mela tragedy. He assured that multiple proposals had been adopted to enhance safety, including the installation of 35 iron lock gates along the Baidyabati-Tarakeswar road, improved road lighting, and a significant increase in ambulance services.

To facilitate quick medical assistance, 25 ambulances, including Toto and bike ambulances, will be stationed at strategic points along the route. The Health Department will also deploy one ambulance per panchayat area, from Baidyabati to Tarakeswar, ensuring emergency services are easily accessible to all. Furthermore, the administration is working with the Telecom Department to improve mobile communication coverage across the Tarakeswar area. These measures are expected to improve coordination among emergency services and keep both pilgrims and authorities connected throughout the event.

In a bid to alleviate the transport burden, a request has been made to the Railway Department to run local trains overnight and to operate a special train service between Kamarkundu and Burdwan, ensuring that devotees can travel smoothly to and from the fair. The roads and ghats leading to the temple will be upgraded, including improvements to drainage systems and the services available at the Ganga ghats, which are critical for the event’s operations.

A guide map will also be launched online by the Hooghly District Administration prior to the start of the Mela. This map will provide vital information, including phone numbers for various services, and help attendees navigate the area with ease. Additionally, the district administration will allow organizations wishing to donate goods to apply online through the block office, streamlining the donation process and ensuring proper coordination.

The meeting, held in the Singur Panchayat Samiti meeting room, saw participation from key officials including Hooghly District Magistrate Mukta Arya, Hooghly District Rural Superintendent of Police Kamanshis Sen, and Singur MLA and State Minister Becharam Manna, along with representatives from the Railway Department, Fire Department, Tarakeswar Temple Authority, and various municipal and administrative bodies. The collaborative effort highlights the district’s commitment to ensuring a safe and organized Tarakeswar Srabani Mela, aiming to provide a hassle-free and spiritually enriching experience for millions of devotees.
