The dropout rate in classes nine and ten has surged by more than 12 percent, showing a sharp increase in students leaving school in these crucial years. In comparison, states like Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan have reported lower dropout rates, underlining the severity of the issue in Bengal.


The report also reveals that over 6,000 schools in the state are functioning with just one teacher, making it increasingly difficult to deliver quality education. In many cases, a single teacher is responsible for managing multiple grades and subjects, which compromises the learning experience for students. This situation has been exacerbated by the state’s ongoing struggle with regular teacher recruitment, leaving vacancies unfilled in schools, especially in rural areas, for years. As a result, students often lose interest in their education due to a lack of adequate guidance and support, contributing further to the rising dropout rates.

The situation is also dire for many schools, with over 1,500 institutions facing the threat of closure due to a lack of student enrollment, exacerbating the crisis. The report paints a stark picture of Bengal’s education system, where even basic infrastructure and resources are lacking.

Experts offer insights into the causes behind these worrying trends. According to their analysis, of every 100 students progressing from ninth to tenth grade, 12 drop out of the education system altogether. This leads to the pressing question: where do these students go? Experts suggest that many of these dropouts are being forced into child labor as they seek to contribute to their families’ incomes. Additionally, a number of students are migrating to other states in search of better opportunities.

The root cause of this rising dropout rate, according to experts, can be traced to several systemic issues within the education system. A significant factor is the absence of a pass-fail policy up to the eighth grade. This often leads to students progressing through the system without gaining sufficient knowledge or skills, making it harder for them to continue their education beyond a certain point. Moreover, the removal of the mid-day meal scheme for students in class nine has been cited as another contributing factor. The mid-day meal program, which has been crucial for keeping students engaged in school, has been discontinued for higher classes, making education less appealing for many students.

Another challenge faced by families is the rising cost of education. For many households, continuing education beyond class eight becomes a financial burden, as parents are required to spend considerable amounts on additional resources like books, uniforms, and tuition. This is pushing many students out of the education system in favor of earning money to support their families.

The report calls for urgent reforms to address these challenges, including measures to reduce dropout rates, improve school infrastructure, and provide better financial support for students and their families. Without these changes, experts warn that Bengal’s education system may continue to face a downward spiral, leaving many children deprived of the opportunities education can provide.

Bangladesh Supreme Court Bans 50 Judges from Coming to India for Training

This move follows a recent decision by the country’s Law Ministry, which had initially approved the participation of these judges in a training program at the National Judicial Academy and State Judicial Academy in Bhopal, India. The decision was announced in a notification signed by Dr. Abul Hasanat, Deputy Secretary of the Law and Justice Department, on Sunday.


According to reports, the judges affected by this ban included Assistant Judges, Senior Assistant Judges, Joint District and Sessions Judges, Additional District and Sessions Judges, and District and Sessions Judges, along with officers of equivalent rank. These judicial officers were scheduled to attend the training from February 10 to 20, 2025. However, the Supreme Court’s intervention has led to the abrupt cancellation of the trip, disrupting the plans for the training program.

The training program in India was designed to offer advanced judicial training and capacity-building opportunities for the participants. The initial approval by the Law Ministry had been part of an ongoing effort to enhance the professional skills of lower-court judges in Bangladesh.

While the official reasons for the cancellation remain unclear, diplomatic circles suggest that the move may be linked to broader political considerations. Speculation is rife that the pro-Pakistan BNP leadership, which is reportedly exerting influence over the country’s judicial system, may have played a role in halting the judges’ trip. The cancellation of the training program follows an earlier controversy involving the incarceration of Chinmoy Maharaj, a prominent figure in Bangladesh, who has been jailed without trial.

Upon receiving urgent information from the hotel owner, personnel from the Border Outpost (BOP) Sandakphu of the 36th Battalion of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) quickly sprang into action under the guidance of their commanding officer. 

The SSB personnel provided immediate humanitarian assistance by administering oxygen through an oxygen cylinder, which helped stabilize the patient’s condition.

Recognizing the need for further medical attention, the patient was subsequently transported to Sukhiapokhari for additional care, as advised by a medical professional.

The swift and compassionate response by the SSB personnel has been widely lauded by both the local community and tourists in the region. 

Their prompt intervention highlights the critical role of security forces in ensuring the safety and well-being of visitors in remote areas.
Sandakphu is a popular trekking destination in the Darjeeling hills of West Bengal, India, bordering Nepal, known for its breathtaking views of the Kanchenjunga range and the surrounding Himalayas. You were associated with Manik Bhattacharya, Partha Chatterjee, Kuntal Ghosh, and others in this matter. You illegally facilitated a job for him. You were a senior official at Leaps and Bounds. You’ve been working to hide the proceeds of corruption. I believe you were involved in illegal activities.”

The epicenter of the quake was located 93 kilometers northeast of Lobuche, near the Himalayan region, as reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS).


The tremors were also felt in several parts of northern India, including Darjeeling, Siliguri (6.37 AM), Jalpaiguri (6.35 AM), Coochbehar, Katihar, Patna, and the Delhi-NCR region at around 6:35 AM local time (6.3. Residents in these areas reported shaking, but there have been no immediate reports of significant damage or casualties. The earthquake was also felt across parts of West Bengal and northeastern states, including Assam.

The earthquake lasted for approximately 15 seconds, and authorities have urged residents to remain cautious, as aftershocks are likely. Additionally, two aftershocks of magnitudes 4.7 and 4.9 were recorded from the same area in Tibet, near the Nepal-Tibet border. These aftershocks followed the initial tremor and heightened concerns of potential damage.


According to data from the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the first aftershock occurred at 7:02 AM IST, registering a magnitude of 4.7. Its epicenter was located at latitude 28.60° North and longitude 87.68° East, at a depth of 10 kilometers. Just five minutes later, another tremor of magnitude 4.9 was recorded at 7:07 AM IST, with its epicenter at latitude 28.68° North and longitude 87.54° East, at a depth of 30 kilometers.

According to the National Centre for Seismology, the quake also affected Tibet’s Xizang region, where it struck at 6:35 AM local time. The region, known for its seismically active nature, was shaken by the powerful quake, though no significant damage or casualties have been reported as of now.

In Nepal, the tremor caused residents in the capital, Kathmandu, to rush out of their homes in panic. Streets were filled with people who were awakened by the shaking. The 7.1 magnitude quake, while strong, did not result in any reported fatalities or structural damage in Nepal so far, according to local authorities. This comes as a relief to many, especially considering the catastrophic 7.8-magnitude earthquake that devastated the region in 2015, killing nearly 9,000 people and causing widespread damage to infrastructure.

In neighboring Tibet, Chinese authorities also reported a strong earthquake that shook the mountainous region near the Nepal-Tibet border. The earthquake in Tibet, which occurred at 6:51 AM local time, was recorded at a magnitude of 7.1 by the USGS, though China’s earthquake monitoring agency classified it at 6.8. The tremor was felt in several communities located within a 5-kilometer radius of the epicenter, situated at an altitude of about 4,200 meters (13,800 feet) at a depth of about 10 km.. 

The earthquake’s epicenter in Tibet was approximately 380 kilometers (240 miles) from Lhasa, the capital of Tibet. Residents in nearby areas reported strong tremors, prompting them to rush out of their homes in alarm. Despite the intensity of the quake, Chinese state media has reported no immediate casualties or significant damage. Local authorities are continuing to assess the situation, and further updates regarding the potential impacts, including the risk of landslides, are awaited.

This earthquake follows a series of seismic events in the region, with authorities and seismologists closely monitoring developments. Given Nepal’s location in a highly active seismic zone, which has witnessed major earthquakes in the past, including the deadly 2015 Gorkha quake, both Nepalese and Indian authorities have issued advisories urging residents to remain vigilant and prepared for potential aftershocks.

Rescue teams in both Nepal and India are on high alert, and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has asked citizens to stay informed and follow the guidance of local authorities. Emergency services are ready to respond should any structural damage or casualties be reported in the coming hours.

At this time, no fatalities or severe damage have been confirmed, and the situation is being closely monitored by both local and international agencies.

Shah highlighted Kashmir’s profound cultural and spiritual ties with India, citing the destruction of temples in Ladakh, the mistakes made in Kashmir after independence, and the subsequent corrections that followed. He further noted that Sufi, Buddhist, and Shaivite monasteries had all flourished in Kashmir, emphasizing the region’s central role in the history of Indian civilization.

The Home Minister stressed that India’s 10,000-year-old culture is present in every part of the country, from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, Gandhara to Odisha, and Bengal to Assam. He argued that those who view the country solely through a geopolitical lens fail to grasp the deeper cultural and historical ties that bind the nation together.
