Updates from the Meeting Between Chief Minister and Junior Doctors

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, October 21, 2024, Kolkata : In a significant meeting held today, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee engaged with junior doctors in Kolkata, addressing ongoing concerns within the medical community. The meeting was livestreamed, allowing the public to witness the dialogue between the Chief Minister and healthcare professionals.

Today’s meeting between Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and junior doctors was livestreamed, allowing the public to observe the discussion.

Chief Minister: “I hope my siblings are physically well. It is a good thing that you have accepted the time.”

Chief Minister: “I hope you will not increase the demands. Increasing demands every day makes it difficult for us.”

Asfaqullah Naiya: “Every time we come late, there is a complaint. But every time, the communication is delayed, so we arrive late. This time it did not happen, so we were not late. The physical condition of the fasting junior doctors is not very good; however, they are continuing their hunger strike.”

Debashis Halder mentioned Sandeep Ghosh, ex-principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, and Ashish Pandey, who are accused of contributing to a culture of threats from the Navanna meeting. The Chief Minister objected, stating, “Those who are not here should not be named. Doctors should express what they want to say.” Debashis responded, “There are complaints against some of them. What should we do in that case?” The Chief Minister replied, “There are complaints against many people.”

Kinjal Nanda raised a point regarding those accused in the vandalism at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 14, asking for the Chief Minister’s opinion on the matter. The Chief Minister asked, “Is this a new demand or not?” The doctors clarified, “It was just a statement.”

Aniket Mahato, a third-year postgraduate trainee at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, expressed his surprise at the alleged cycle of crime occurring within the college. He stated that there needs to be an impartial committee where anyone with complaints can come forward.

The junior doctors demanded the removal of Health Secretary Narayanswaroop Nigam during the Navanna meeting. A young woman explained the difference between the accused and the guilty.

Chief Minister: “I claim that the resignation was made under pressure in North Bengal. That is also a kind of threat culture.”

Chief Minister: “I will not blame you alone. Maybe we were wrong. There was an error, for which you have to go to this place.”

The Chief Minister expressed final frustration towards the principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, demanding, “You suspended 47 people yourself? Why didn’t you send the proposal to the health department? From there, I would decide. Is it not a threat culture?”

Aniket Mahato then entered into a direct conflict with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, asserting that he had been suspended after an investigation by the committee. He spoke on behalf of the principal of RG Kar.

He noted, “We can’t just do two things. Our hands are tied. First, the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape and murder case is being tried in the Supreme Court. Secondly, the government cannot change the Medical Council from time to time.”

Chief Minister: “I fasted for 26 days. Not a single government official came to me. I myself went to Dharanasthal. I have sent the chief secretaries. I have inquired about the health of the doctors on hunger strike every day. I searched for hours.”

Chief Minister: “We cannot sleep at home if you are out. Please lift your hunger strike.”

Key Highlights from the Meeting

Chief Minister’s Opening Remarks
The Chief Minister opened the discussion with a message of hope for the junior doctors, stating, “I hope my siblings are physically well. It is a good thing that you have accepted the time.” She expressed her concerns about the continuous rise in demands from the doctors, noting that it complicates the government’s ability to respond effectively.
Doctors Express Their Concerns
Asfaqullah Naiya, representing the junior doctors, emphasized the challenges faced during negotiations. “Every time we come late, there is a complaint. But every time the communication is late, we are a little late,” he said. He highlighted that the physical condition of fasting junior doctors is deteriorating, yet they continue their hunger strike in solidarity for their cause.
Discussion of Accusations and Accountability
Debashis Halder raised serious concerns regarding individuals implicated in a threatening culture, mentioning Sandeep Ghosh and Ashish Pandey during the meeting. The Chief Minister objected to naming individuals not present, asserting that doctors should focus on expressing their grievances rather than making accusations. Debashis countered that complaints must be addressed, leading to a robust discussion about accountability within the healthcare system.
Demands for Transparency and Fairness
Junior doctor Kinjal Nanda questioned the handling of recent vandalism at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, seeking clarity on the government’s stance. The Chief Minister responded, “Is this a new demand or not?” reinforcing the notion that the meeting was not merely a platform for airing grievances but for seeking constructive solutions.

Aniket Mahato, a third-year postgraduate trainee at RG Kar, voiced the need for an impartial committee to handle complaints against individuals involved in misconduct. His comments underscored the desire for transparency and fairness in addressing grievances within the institution.

Call for Cooperation

The Chief Minister reiterated her commitment to supporting the doctors, recounting her own experience of fasting for 26 days, during which no government officials visited her. “I cannot sleep at home if you are out,” she implored, urging the junior doctors to lift their hunger strike.

As tensions remained palpable, the Chief Minister expressed frustration over the handling of the RG Kar Medical College situation, demanding accountability from the principal regarding the suspension of staff members. “Why didn’t you send the proposal to the health department? I would decide. Is it not a threat culture?” she challenged.

A Path Forward

The meeting concluded with a shared acknowledgment of the difficulties faced by both parties. While the Chief Minister recognized the need for improvement, the junior doctors emphasized the urgency of their demands. As the dialogue continues, both sides express hope for a resolution that ensures the safety and well-being of medical professionals and patients alike.

This meeting reflects a crucial moment in the ongoing conversation about the state of healthcare in West Bengal, with both the government and junior doctors striving for a harmonious and effective working environment.

Kalyani JNM Hospital Doctors Announce Mass Resignation Amid Ongoing Protests for Safety

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, October 13, 2024,  Kalyani :  In a significant development, 77 doctors from Kalyani JNM Hospital have decided to stage a ‘public resignation’ in solidarity with junior doctors currently on hunger strike. The doctors have formally communicated their decision to the hospital registrar via email, stating they will cease all medical duties starting Monday.

The mass resignation stems from growing concerns for both patient safety and the well-being of the junior doctors, who are facing severe health challenges as they continue their hunger strike. These junior doctors are advocating for a 10-point safety protocol to ensure better working conditions, particularly amid the ongoing festival season when patient inflow tends to rise.

In their email, the resigning doctors expressed that forcing medical staff to work under these conditions could lead to a crisis in patient care. “The mental state of our team is deteriorating, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to provide adequate treatment,” they stated, highlighting the urgency of their situation.

This public resignation follows a wave of similar actions from doctors at RG Kar, SSKM, and other hospitals, all rallying behind the junior doctors’ cause. Eight junior doctors are currently on hunger strike at Dharmatala, making a bold statement during this festive time to demand immediate attention from the government.

As the healthcare community stands united in their fight for safety and better working conditions, the situation at Kalyani JNM Hospital remains tense, with many now looking to the government for a swift resolution to these critical issues.

West Bengal Government Urges Hill Tea Gardens to Pay 16% Bonus to Workers

West Bengal government urges hill tea gardens to pay a 16% bonus to workers for fiscal 2023-24, aligning with the Dooars and Terai regions’ decision. The move aims to maintain parity and prevent labor unrest.
PTI, Kolkata, Oct 1, 2024 :  The West Bengal government’s Labour department on Tuesday issued an advisory to disburse bonus to workers of tea gardens of Darjeeling, Kurseong and Kalimpong at 16 per cent for the fiscal 2023-24.

The government said this advisory has been issued to maintain parity throughout the tea industry in West Bengal as the gardens of Dooars and Terai regions of North Bengal have decided to pay bonus at 16 per cent for the last financial year.

In the advisory, the state government said that while the tea gardens of the hills had earlier agreed to pay bonus to the workers at 8.33 per cent as per the Bonus Act of 1965 after a series of meetings held between management, trade unions, and the government at tripartite level considering the severe financial stress faced by the gardens, labour unrest ensued in North Bengal as the workers were not ready to settle for bonus at less than 20 per cent.

Subsequently, the management of the gardens agreed to pay bonus at 13 per cent but the unions stuck to their demand of 20 per cent resulting in a deadlock.

According to the government, an industry-wide settlement has been already made to pay bonus at 16 per cent in North Bengal, disbursement of the same has started in full swing there.

While the Durga Puja and Dussehra festivals are very near, it has become urgent and necessary that the bonus payment to the workers of North Bengal gardens should start without any further delay by the management.

The government said that workers and their families should not be deprived owing to the impasse. The government also urged the management and the trade unions to ensure industrial peace and harmony.

Regarding financially stressed gardens, the rate of bonus may be decided at a bipartite level agreed upon by the management and trade unions.

The government also said that the bonus payout should be disbursed within October four.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday had refused to intervene in the ongoing impasse over payment of bonus to tea garden workers of Darjeeling hills.

She alleged that the deadlock was the result of political disturbances.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Convenes Administrative Meeting Amid North Bengal Flood Crisis

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, September 29, 2024, Siliguri : Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee convened an urgent administrative meeting at Uttarkanya in Siliguri on Sunday to address the escalating flood situation in North Bengal, which has been severely impacted by the waters of the Koshi River. The flooding has affected vast areas, stretching from Malda to Kalimpong and into the hills of Darjeeling.

During her visit, the Chief Minister noted the persistent disruptions to traffic on National Highway No. 10, which has not yet returned to normalcy. Many residents have been forced to take shelter in relief camps after their homes were swept away by the relentless flooding. “Many residents of North Bengal have been affected by the water of the Koshi River in Nepal, which has entered Bengal from Bihar,” she explained while speaking at Dum Dum Airport before heading to the meeting. “Malda has also experienced severe flooding due to rising water levels in the Shangkos River.”

The flood crisis has led to significant communication challenges, especially with Sikkim, as parts of National Highway No. 10 have collapsed. The situation in various districts of the plains remains critical, exacerbated by water releases from the Teesta Barrage, which have contributed to flooding in Jalpaiguri and surrounding areas. A yellow alert has been issued by the Meteorological Department, advising residents near riverbanks to evacuate.

The flood crisis is not limited to Bengal; Nepal has been grappling with heavy rains for the past three days, resulting in widespread destruction and triggering massive landslides. So far, 112 fatalities have been reported in Nepal, with the capital, Kathmandu, suffering considerable damage.

As Banerjee prepared to address the flooding in North Bengal, she emphasized the interconnected nature of the crisis: “There is a flood situation in Bihar due to the Koshi River, and water is entering the northern side of our state through Bihar. We must remain vigilant as South Dinajpur may also be at risk of flooding.” She criticized the lack of dredging at the Farakka Barrage, which she believes has exacerbated the flooding.

Concerns are growing that the flood situation in Manikach, Malda, could worsen as waters from the Koshi and Gandak rivers continue to spread into Bengal. Areas including Bhutani in Manikach are at heightened risk of further inundation.

Meanwhile, Minister Firad Hakim, who visited the flood-affected areas on Saturday, has faced backlash after allegations surfaced that relief supplies were mismanaged or looted. Residents of Bhootnirchar have voiced their frustrations, claiming they did not receive the assistance they desperately need.

As the situation develops, the Chief Minister has vowed to provide necessary support and resources to those affected, urging residents to stay cautious and prepared.

Chief Minister Visits Flood-Hit North Bengal, Blames Central Government for Flooding

KalimNews, KalimNews, September 29, 2024, Kolkata: As the Durga Puja festivities approach, vast areas of North Bengal are grappling with severe flooding. The situation has escalated into chaos, affecting regions from Malda in the plains to Kalimpong in the hills and Darjeeling. National Highway 10 has been closed, disrupting normal communication and transport.

Amid this crisis, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has embarked on a visit to North Bengal to assess the unfolding disaster. Before her journey, she expressed frustration at the central government, stating, “No one has inquired about the flood situation in Bengal.” She fears that conditions may deteriorate further due to anticipated releases of water from rivers in Nepal.

Banerjee attributed much of the flooding to the lack of dredging at the Farakka Barrage, which has led to significant silt accumulation and reduced water storage capacity. “There has been no help from the central government to address the flood situation in the state. No one has paid a single penny or even looked our way,” she declared. Several areas of North Bengal are currently inundated due to the Koshi River, with water starting to flow into Bengal through Bihar, exacerbating the crisis.

The flooding has severely impacted communication between Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Mirik in Sikkim. The Chief Minister highlighted that the rising water levels of the Sankosh River have caused floods in Malda, further endangering nearby regions.

Forecasts from the Meteorological Department indicate that more rain is expected in the coming days, which could worsen the already dire situation. “Some new areas may become inundated,” Banerjee warned. She noted that approximately 500,000 cusecs of water from the Koshi River has been released from Nepal, threatening further flooding in Malda, Murshidabad, Itahar in South Dinajpur, and other large areas.

In light of these developments, the Chief Minister has directed local administrations to implement evacuation protocols and issue warnings to residents. Additionally, she pointed out that Nepal is also suffering from heavy rains, contributing to the widespread flooding across the region.

“The entire country is grappling with this crisis, yet Bengal is the only state that has been deprived of necessary flood compensation,” Banerjee emphasized. As North Bengal continues to face this unprecedented challenge, the call for urgent assistance and intervention from the central government grows louder.

Ex-Army Man Urgen Tamang Returns Home After 182 Days of Ordeal in Russia

KalimNews, 21 September 2024, Kalimpong: In an emotional reunion, former Indian Army soldier Urgen Tamang arrived home in Chhibo Busty, Ward No. 9 of Kalimpong, on September 21, 2024, after enduring 182 days of uncertainty and distress in Russia. His arrival at Bagdogra Airport was met with tears of joy from his wife, Ambika Tamang, and their two children.

“I witnessed many Indians perish in the conflict. Each day was a nightmare; I couldn’t eat or sleep. It’s hard to believe I’m finally home,” Tamang recounted, visibly shaken yet grateful for his safe return from the war zone. “I thank God for bringing me back to my family.”

Urgen’s return was made possible largely due to the relentless efforts of Rabi Pradhan, Chairman of the Kalimpong Municipality’s Board of Administrators. Pradhan, who had been in constant contact with Urgen during his ordeal, was present at the airport to welcome him back, accompanied by family and well-wishers.

Pradhan revealed the harrowing details of Tamang’s experience: “He spent five and a half months in the war zone after being misled by an agent who promised him a job as a helper in Russia. Instead, he was drafted into the Russian Army and sent to fight in Ukraine without any prior military experience.”

Urgen with Raja Pathan on the last day in Moscow.

The breakthrough in Tamang’s case came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised the issue during his visit to Russia in July 2024, directly discussing the release of Indians caught in the conflict with President Vladimir Putin. Following this, Pradhan reminded the Indian embassy in Moscow about Urgen’s plight on September 10, leading to his release from Russian authorities on September 17.

In a viral video posted on March 23, 2024, Tamang detailed his grim situation from the war front, pleading for assistance from Indian authorities. He highlighted the dangers faced by him and his comrades, stating that 13 out of 15 non-Russian soldiers in his unit were killed during combat.

Upon his return, Tamang expressed deep gratitude to Indian authorities, the embassy, Rabi Pradhan, and various NGOs for their unwavering support. He shared his struggles with despair during his captivity and how Pradhan’s encouragement fueled his hope for rescue.

Tamang, who served in the Indian Army for 18 years before retiring in 2018, revealed that he had been misled by an agent, Bishnu Pokhrel from Nepal, who promised him a lucrative job in Russia. Instead, he found himself facing the horrors of war, undergoing basic training before being sent to the front lines.

Rabi Pradhan thanked all those involved in Urgen’s rescue, including Raja Pathan of the Indian embassy in Moscow, who facilitated communications between the governments. He confirmed that Urgen’s military contract was officially terminated on September 13, allowing him to return home.

As Tamang reunited with his family, he expressed immense relief and joy, grateful for the support that ultimately brought him back to safety.

Traffic ASI Arrested in Rape Case Following Two-Month Investigation

Baby Chakraborty | KalimNews | September 21, 2024 | Siliguri: In a significant development, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Amar Bir of the Bagdogra Traffic Guard was arrested on charges of rape, nearly two months after a woman lodged a formal complaint with the Matigara Police Station. The victim alleged that ASI Bir had been sexually assaulting her over an extended period, luring her with false promises of marriage and, in some instances, using his position to intimidate her.

According to sources, the accused ASI threatened the woman with police action if she exposed the abuse. Despite this, the victim courageously filed a written complaint with Matigara Police Station two months ago, detailing her traumatic experiences. After an extended investigation, the police arrested ASI Bir yesterday, marking a turning point in the case.

The accused was presented before the Siliguri Sub-Divisional Court earlier today. Authorities from Matigara Police Station have requested custody of the ASI to proceed with a thorough investigation into the allegations. The remand period is expected to be crucial for gathering additional evidence and verifying the full extent of the crimes committed.

The arrest has sent shockwaves through the local community, as ASI Amar Bir had been a traffic officer in the Bagdogra Traffic Guard for several years. Local residents and advocacy groups are closely following the case, hoping for swift justice and accountability. Fearing his arrest, he first applied for anticipatory bail in the sessions court, which rejected his appeal, and then pursued the appeal in the high court, which also rejected it.

This incident has once again highlighted the pressing issue of power dynamics and abuse within law enforcement, raising concerns about the need for greater transparency and stronger checks on those in positions of authority. As the investigation unfolds, all eyes are on the judicial process to ensure that the victim receives the justice she deserves.

Jalpaiguri Durga Puja Committee Honors Picasso’s “Guernica” with Unique Tribute

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, September 20, 2024, Jalpaiguri : In a powerful artistic statement reflecting the current global unrest, the New Para Adi Durga Puja Committee in Jalpaiguri is drawing inspiration from Pablo Picasso’s iconic mural, Guernica. This year, the committee has chosen to showcase a unique representation of the mural in the form of a decagon, highlighting the stark parallels between the turmoil of the Spanish Civil War and today’s world.

Guernica, painted in response to the bombing of the Basque town during the Spanish Civil War in April 1937, is renowned for its haunting imagery, including a woman holding a dead child and a bull symbolizing brutality and chaos. The monochromatic work captures the devastation and suffering caused by conflict, resonating deeply with contemporary issues of violence and despair.

In light of these themes, the committee’s artistic endeavor aims to provoke thought and reflection during the upcoming Durga Puja celebrations. Biswajit Ghosh, a sculptor from North Bengal, explained that the idol of Goddess Durga is being crafted in a studio using clay coated on wood and plywood. “We are merging Picasso’s purist ideals with traditional Indian art to comment on the state of the world,” Ghosh stated.

This initiative not only honors a historical artwork but also serves as a poignant reminder of the cycles of violence that persist in society. The committee hopes that this creative fusion will inspire dialogue among festival-goers and encourage a deeper understanding of the themes represented.

As the festival approaches, the New Para Adi Durga Puja Committee’s tribute to Guernica stands as a testament to the power of art in addressing social issues and fostering community reflection during a time of celebration.

The outcry has escalated into a major political and social movement, with calls for justice reverberating through the medical community and beyond.

The shocking incident has ignited a fierce response from junior doctors and medical professionals, who have taken to the streets in protest. Slogans such as “Demand Justice” and “Hang the Criminals” are prominently displayed, underscoring the gravity of their demands. The protests have garnered significant political support, with various political parties aligning with the cause and voicing their support for the junior doctors’ demands.

In response to the RG Kar Hospital tragedy, junior doctors have organized a series of demonstrations. A prominent campaign, known as the “Lalbazar Campaign,” is scheduled for September 2. During this event, protesters will demand the resignation of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal. Following this, on September 3, doctors across all public and private hospitals in , including private chambers, will observe a pendown strike.

Additionally, a march will take place on the streets of Kolkata to demand the punishment of those involved in the crime. The protestors are determined to keep the issue in the public eye until justice is served.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has addressed the situation in a recent meeting of the Trinamool Congress student council at Mayo Road. She expressed support for the junior doctors, acknowledging their anger and frustration. “I understand your anger and pride,” she said. “However, I urge you to gradually return to work. The Supreme Court has granted special powers to states to address such matters, and I assure you that no punitive action will be taken against you. Careers and opportunities should not be jeopardized.”

In the midst of the ongoing protests, Chief Minister Banerjee took to her X (formerly Twitter) handle to clarify her stance. “I did not threaten the doctors. My comments are being misinterpreted,” she wrote, addressing concerns that her earlier remarks were perceived as a threat.

The protests have not been confined to local or national boundaries. The incident has sparked demonstrations abroad as well, with international solidarity highlighting the severity of the case. Doctors from RG Kar Hospital have been on strike, and efforts are being made to restore normalcy at the facility.

The Junior Doctors’ Association has issued a statement reinforcing their demands and the ongoing nature of their protest. “Our five-point demand continues to evolve,” the statement reads. “We will persist with our movement until justice is achieved.”

The situation remains dynamic, with both state administration and political circles closely watching the developments. The key question now is how the state government will respond to the junior doctors’ demands and the broader implications of the ongoing protests.

Civic Volunteers in the Headlines Again: Former Civic Volunteer Arrested with Drugs in Jalpaiguri

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, August 30, 2024, Jalpaiguri: In a fresh controversy involving civic volunteers, a “retired” civic volunteer, Kishore Roy, and his associate were arrested by the Jalpaiguri Kotwali police station on charges of drug possession. The incident has once again brought civic volunteers under the spotlight, raising concerns about the conduct and accountability of those associated with law enforcement.

The incident unfolded on Thursday afternoon near the Teesta River in Balapara, a locality close to Jalpaiguri city. Locals noticed two suspicious-looking youths on the riverbank and began questioning them. During the interrogation by locals, one of the young men, later identified as Kishore Roy, claimed to be a civic volunteer. Sensing something amiss, the locals promptly informed the Jalpaiguri Kotwali police station.

Upon receiving the information, a team of police officers arrived at the scene and apprehended the two youths. A search of the duo led to the recovery of one and a half grams of brown sugar (a form of heroin) and 93 intoxicating tablets. Both Kishore Roy and his associate, identified as Sameer Mandal, were taken into custody.

During initial questioning at the police station, the arrested men claimed that the drugs were for their personal use to get intoxicated. However, the police were not convinced by their explanations and decided to formally arrest them after further interrogation. A case has been registered against the two under the Anti-Narcotics Act (NDPS Act). According to police sources, the two will be produced in Jalpaiguri court today, Friday, and are expected to be remanded in custody.

Jalpaiguri Superintendent of Police, Umesh Khandabahale, confirmed the arrests and provided additional details about the individuals involved. “Kishore Roy, who was working as a civic volunteer at Banarhat police station, was removed from his duties on August 16 due to several complaints against him,” said SP Khandabahale. “His past record of misconduct had already marked him as a problematic civic volunteer.”

The other arrested individual, Sameer Mandal, is a resident of the King Saheb Ghat area of Jalpaiguri town. The police are investigating if there is a larger network involved or if they were merely consumers of narcotics. Both have been charged under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act for illegal possession of narcotics.

This is not the first time civic volunteers have been in the news for the wrong reasons. In recent years, there have been increasing reports of misconduct and criminal activities involving civic volunteers, who are recruited to assist the police force in maintaining law and order. Earlier, the names of civic volunteers were involved in several incidents, including the RG Kar case, which created a significant controversy. This time, the arrest of a former civic volunteer with drugs has created a sensation again, raising serious concerns about the vetting process, training, and oversight of civic volunteers.

Local residents have expressed their concerns about the safety and integrity of law enforcement services in their area. “It is shocking that someone who was supposed to assist the police was himself involved in such illegal activities,” said a local resident from Jalpaiguri. “The authorities need to thoroughly investigate and ensure that those assisting the police are trustworthy.”

In light of the incident, the Jalpaiguri police have promised stricter oversight and background checks for those involved in civic volunteer programs. “We are taking this incident very seriously,” said a senior police official. “We will ensure that such elements are weeded out from the system, and a thorough background check is conducted before allowing anyone to serve as a civic volunteer.”

The arrest of Kishore Roy and Sameer Mandal is a stark reminder of the need for stricter scrutiny and regulation within the civic volunteer program. As investigations continue, the police aim to uncover whether this was an isolated case or part of a more extensive network operating within the region.

The arrests have sparked debate about the role and accountability of civic volunteers within the police framework. Public confidence has been shaken, and there are calls for a comprehensive review of the civic volunteer system to prevent such incidents in the future.

Both Kishore Roy and Sameer Mandal have been remanded in judicial custody, and the case will be presented before the court today, Friday. As the legal proceedings unfold, it remains to be seen what further revelations might come to light.

Woman Arrested Red-Handed with Raw Spirit by NJP Police in Siliguri

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, August 30, 2024, Siliguri: In a significant crackdown on illegal liquor trade, a woman was arrested red-handed by plainclothes police officers from NJP police station while attempting to sell raw spirit near NJP Netaji More in Siliguri. The woman, identified as Geeta Shaivya, hailing from Naxalbari, was caught with approximately 37 liters of raw spirit, which she had allegedly smuggled from Panitanki, a town on the India-Nepal border.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of police officers from NJP police station conducted a raid in the area adjacent to NJP Netaji More on Friday. The police arrested Geeta Shaivya on the spot and seized the illegal consignment. According to police sources, she has been involved in the illicit trade of raw spirit for quite some time and has been on their radar.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that the raw spirit seized from her possession is often used in the production of fake liquor. Such illicitly made alcohol poses serious health risks to consumers and has been linked to numerous cases of poisoning and fatalities. “The sale of raw spirit is illegal, and its use to make counterfeit liquor is a major concern. We are committed to cracking down on this illegal trade,” said a senior police official from NJP police station.

Geeta Shaivya is believed to be part of a larger network engaged in smuggling raw spirit across the India-Nepal border. The area around Panitanki is notorious for cross-border smuggling activities, with raw spirit being one of the frequently trafficked goods due to its high demand among illicit liquor manufacturers.

The police are now investigating further to uncover the full extent of the illegal operation and identify other individuals involved. “We suspect that there are more people connected to this illegal trade. Further investigations are underway to trace the supply chain and the end users,” added the official.

The accused, Geeta Shaivya, was produced before the Jalpaiguri court on Friday, where she has been charged under relevant sections of the law pertaining to the illegal possession and transportation of raw spirit. The court has remanded her to police custody for further interrogation to extract more information about the network and her role in it.

The arrest highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in tackling the illicit liquor trade, which has far-reaching consequences for public health and safety. The NJP police have stepped up their vigilance in the region to prevent such illegal activities, especially with the upcoming festive season, which often sees a spike in the sale of illegal liquor.

Local residents have lauded the NJP police for their prompt action and expressed hope that such operations will continue to ensure that the streets are safe from the dangers of illegal liquor.

“We are grateful to the police for taking swift action. This arrest will send a strong message to those involved in illegal activities,” said a local resident.

The NJP police have appealed to the public to come forward with any information regarding illegal activities in their vicinity. The authorities have assured that the identity of informants will be kept confidential, and their cooperation will help in creating a safer environment for all.
