Kasba Law College Reopens Amid Tension and Protests After 12 Days, Security Concerns Escalate

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, July 7, 2025, Kolkata:

Kasba Law College reopened today after a tense 12-day closure, with the atmosphere on campus thick with apprehension and suppressed panic. As the gates of the institution finally swung open, the mood was far from celebratory, and the name “Manojit” remained unspoken, casting a shadow over the entire proceedings. The college, which had been closed following a series of disturbing events, reopened under heavy police security, leaving everyone uncertain whether they were entering a place of learning or a fort under siege.

From the crack of dawn, the entire campus was cordoned off by a substantial police presence, with high-ranking officers standing guard both inside and outside the premises. The heavy-handed security was a result of the ongoing concerns for safety and the tensions surrounding the reopening. Vice Principal Naina Chatterjee arrived at 7 am, under immense pressure to resume operations, even as the college faced mounting scrutiny and public unrest.

The situation grew more tense as a team of senior police officers inspected the security arrangements multiple times, reviewing the guard rails and other measures to ensure that no untoward incidents occurred. DC SSD Bidisha Kalita made her appearance in front of the college, keeping a watchful eye over the proceedings as staff and professors began arriving one by one. The campus remained heavily secured, with a permanent security guard, Varun Mahali, stationed at the entrance to monitor access.

The unrest surrounding the reopening is connected to an unsettling incident involving a law student, Manojit, whose name became a flashpoint for the growing discontent. According to reports, Manojit’s father claimed that he and his family had come to the college for a brief 20-minute form-filling session, but had refused to leave their son alone, raising concerns over his safety and the institution’s handling of the situation.

Professor Somnath Mukherjee, who appeared in court as a representative for the college, assured the public that strict adherence to security guidelines would be followed moving forward. “The law student who sought help after being allegedly tortured by a lawyer has created an undesirable image for the institution, and we are committed to addressing these concerns,” said Professor Mukherjee. The professor emphasized that the college would not tolerate any form of harassment and would ensure the safety of all students.

However, despite the assurances, chaos erupted within moments of the college reAfter a tense closure lasting 12 days, South Calcutta Law College in Kasba reopened today under heavy police security. The atmosphere was one of apprehension and unease, as the gates of the institution opened to a subdued crowd of students, many accompanied by their parents, for the first time since the college had been shut down on June 29 following a disturbing incident.

The reopening comes in the wake of the alleged gang rape of a first-year student on campus, an event that had sent shockwaves through the institution and the surrounding community. As the college reopens, the name of the prime accused, Manojit Mishra, continues to loom large over the proceedings, although it remains unspoken in the charged air of the campus. Mishra, an alumnus and casual employee of the college, along with two senior students, all of whom are affiliated with the Trinamool Congress (TMC) students’ wing, was arrested following the incident, which occurred after hours on June 25.

On the first day back, Vice Principal Naina Chatterjee confirmed that only first-semester BA LLB students who had not yet completed their examination forms were required to attend. These students were instructed to come in to complete the necessary formalities. Approximately 100 students, many accompanied by concerned parents, arrived at the gates, which were reopened at 10 am.

The reopening was far from routine, with strict security measures in place to ensure that no further incidents would disrupt the fragile peace. Kolkata Police, led by senior officers, had taken charge of overseeing the campus, while private guards carefully checked the ID cards of everyone entering. In line with the college’s new security protocol, no student was allowed to remain on campus past 2 pm, a stark contrast to the previous routine, where the college would remain open until 4 pm on regular working days.

A teacher at the college explained the shift in timings, stating that the decision was made to ensure greater control and to prevent any untoward situations. “We have taken a conscious decision not to allow rogue elements like Manojit Mishra, the prime accused in the rape case, access to the campus. The entry of outsiders will also be strictly regulated,” the teacher said.

While the decision to reopen was made with the approval of the Kolkata Police, the situation remains fraught with tension. The students’ union room and the security guard’s room, both of which were central to the investigation into the assault, have been sealed by the police and are off-limits to students and staff. The authorities also reminded students to follow their usual class timetable starting from July 8, in hopes of returning to normalcy.

Despite assurances from both the police and college authorities, many guardians remained deeply concerned about the safety of their children. Sasanka Dhara, the father of a first-semester student, expressed his fears, stating, “I have decided to accompany my son every day he has to come here for exams until the situation normalizes. We are scared about our children’s safety.” Another guardian accompanying his daughter voiced similar concerns, questioning how the security system could be trusted when both the guards and the college management were under threat.

The allegations that have rocked the college community have not only raised serious questions about campus security but also about the institution’s ability to manage and safeguard its students. One parent remarked, “I refuse to believe that the top TMC leaders were unaware of the criminal activities taking place on the campus, including the gross misuse of the students’ union room. These miscreants were allowed to operate with impunity because they had the blessings of their political leaders.”

The law student, whose name has not been disclosed for privacy reasons, was allegedly gang-raped by Mishra and his accomplices after the college hours. The victim, deeply traumatized by the assault, and her family have been seeking justice, while the college administration has faced public and media scrutiny for its handling of the situation. Protests have erupted from both students and local residents, demanding action against the accused and questioning the college’s safety measures.

In a bid to reassure the public, Professor Somnath Mukherjee, who appeared in court as a representative of the college, promised that the institution would adhere to strict security guidelines moving forward. “The unfortunate incident involving the law student has created an undesirable image for the institution. We are committed to ensuring that such a situation never happens again, and that all students feel safe,” he said.

However, the unrest continued to escalate as protests grew louder throughout the day. Students and faculty voiced their concerns about the timing of Vice Principal Chatterjee’s arrival and departure, as well as the college administration’s handling of the crisis. These grievances led to further unrest, culminating in the Vice Principal being escorted out of the premises amid growing tension.

As the campus begins to reopen, the path to restoring normalcy remains uncertain. For many students, the events of the past two weeks have left an indelible mark on their trust in the institution’s ability to protect them. While the college administration and law enforcement agencies have promised enhanced security measures, the true challenge will be to rebuild the confidence of the student body and their families. Until then, the Kasba Law College remains in a state of suspended tension, with the future of the institution hanging in the balance.opening. Protests broke out around the vice principal, with students and staff disputing the timing of her arrival and departure that day, as well as raising concerns about the registrar’s handling of the situation. These grievances culminated in further unrest, leading to the vice principal being escorted out of the college amid rising tensions.

As the protests grew in intensity, the situation at Kasba Law College remains fragile, with many unsure about the future of the institution. The reopening, while necessary, has only highlighted deeper issues regarding security, student safety, and the overall administration of the college. For now, the tension continues to simmer, with the college community awaiting concrete measures to address these ongoing concerns.

Blindfolded Girl Beaten Inside Bolpur Girls’ High School: Parents Demand Action and Increased Security

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, July 7, 2025, Kolkata :

A shocking and deeply troubling incident has taken place at Bolpur Girls’ High School, where a ninth-grade student was allegedly blindfolded and brutally beaten by senior students from the eleventh and twelfth grades. The incident, which occurred last Friday, has left the young girl hospitalized, and her family is understandably outraged.

The disturbing nature of the incident has sparked protests from both parents and students, who have gathered outside the school since Monday morning, voicing their anger and demanding accountability. The central questions from the protesting crowd are clear: How could such an act of violence occur in a place meant for learning and safety? Where was the school’s security when this horrific act took place? Why weren’t parents notified immediately about such a traumatic incident involving their child?

The protesters are also accusing the school authorities of trying to cover up the incident. According to them, no visible action has been taken against the accused students so far, and there has been a lack of transparency from the school administration. The continued silence from the school management has only added to the frustration of the parents and students who are demanding swift justice and better protection measures.

The Bolpur Police Station has intervened, arriving at the scene to monitor the situation and prevent any further escalation. The police have assured that they are investigating the matter, though no major updates have been provided so far.

When approached by the media, the school principal responded by stating, “We are investigating the entire matter seriously. We have informed the police, and necessary action will be taken after we have all the details.” Despite this, the parents and students remain unsatisfied with the response and have kept the school closed as part of their ongoing protest. They are demanding that the students responsible for the attack be identified immediately and given appropriate punishment, while also insisting that the school take stronger measures to ensure the safety of students going forward.

Locals and concerned parents are voicing their concerns that this incident has cast a dark shadow over the school environment. Many fear it will contribute to a growing sense of insecurity among students and parents alike. With emotions running high, the situation remains tense, and the calls for justice continue to grow louder.

Kasba Law College Reopens with Strict Guidelines After Days of Closure

Baby Chakraborty | KalimNews | July 5, 2025 | Kolkata :  Kasba Law College is set to reopen its doors from Monday after a prolonged closure that began last Wednesday, following growing concerns over campus unrest. The reopening, however, will come with several strict conditions in place to ensure the safety and security of students and staff.

Education Minister Bratya Basu had expressed his displeasure over the college’s indefinite closure, particularly as it came at a critical time when semester exams were approaching. The closure of the college had effectively stalled academic progress, with several students still waiting to fill up their first semester forms. Basu had called for immediate action to resolve the matter, which led to a swift intervention from the authorities.

The issue reached the Calcutta High Court on Thursday, where a decision was made that the college’s reopening would be determined by the authorities and the management committee. In a meeting with the committee members, it was decided that the college would reopen under certain conditions. A formal notification was issued, outlining the specific guidelines for students and faculty when they return to campus on Monday.

Key conditions for the reopening include restricted operational hours, with the college only running from 8 am to 2 pm. Students will have the opportunity to fill out first-semester forms between 10 am and 12 pm. The college authorities also specified that fourth, sixth, and eighth-semester students will be allowed to submit their project papers between Tuesday and Thursday, with each semester scheduled for a specific day. Fourth-semester students are to come on Tuesday, sixth-semester students on Wednesday, and eighth-semester students on Thursday, between 9 am and 12:30 pm.

A crucial security measure introduced in the guidelines is that no one will be allowed to enter the college campus without presenting a valid photo ID. Furthermore, students are required to inform the security guard at the gate about the reason for their visit. Unauthorized entry or vague explanations will not be tolerated.

The college’s management committee has also made arrangements for increased security presence on campus. Discussions are ongoing about which gate students will use for entry and exit, as well as whether certain facilities like the union room, guard room, and washrooms will be allowed to be used for other purposes. In the interim, the college has requested Kasba police to ensure adequate security until the situation stabilizes.

Adding to the security changes, the college has terminated its previous security agency and appointed Varun Mahali to oversee security operations in the interim. It is also anticipated that two additional security guards will be hired from a new agency to further bolster safety.

While the reopening signals a return to normalcy, the management committee has made it clear that the college will only function under close scrutiny, with safety protocols strictly enforced. The authorities are hopeful that these measures will help restore a conducive learning environment for the students, and prevent any further disruptions to academic activities.

Rajnya Haldar Raises Alarm Over Misogyny Within Trinamool Chhatra Parishad as Party Faces Growing Controversy

Baby Chakraborty | KalimNews | July 5, 2025 | Kolkata :  The political situation within the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) is becoming increasingly tense as internal disputes continue to surface. Rajnya Haldar, a former leader of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) and an outspoken critic of the current party dynamics, has escalated matters by accusing certain members of the student wing of sharing indecent, AI-generated images of her. This follows the growing controversy surrounding the Manojit Mishra case, a gangrape incident involving a law student, which has further deepened divisions within the party. Haldar’s allegations have caused unease within the TMC, as her revelations seem to amplify the party’s internal struggles, particularly concerning issues of misogyny.

Haldar, who served as the TMCP president at Jadavpur University before being suspended in October 2024, has long been vocal about gender discrimination. Her suspension followed a social media post about a short film she had starred in, which depicted violence against women. The film, which mirrored the rape-murder of a medical student at R.G. Kar Hospital in August 2024, sparked widespread controversy. Despite her suspension, Haldar has remained an outspoken figure, condemning gender-based violence and fighting for women’s rights, even within her own political circles.

On Friday, Haldar took to the media to accuse some student leaders of circulating offensive AI-generated images of her, which she claims were intended to tarnish her reputation. “There are many Monojit Mishras within the TMCP,” she said, referring to the primary suspect in the law student’s gangrape case. Haldar asserted that these individuals use such images to blackmail female members of the student wing by offering them influential positions in exchange for compliance.

In response, the TMCP leadership denied these allegations, stating that Haldar had never reported such issues to them before. Trinankur Bhattacharya, the state president of TMCP, emphasized that if any evidence of misconduct was provided, the party would conduct an internal investigation and take appropriate action. “She had never brought up the issue with me in the past,” Bhattacharya remarked. Senior TMC minister Firhad Hakim, when questioned about the situation, also claimed ignorance of the specific allegations but reassured that the party and government maintain a zero-tolerance policy towards crimes against women. “We take strict action against anyone found guilty of misconduct,” Hakim stated.

Haldar, however, was unwavering in her criticism, emphasizing that misogynistic behavior is not confined to any single party or group. “These misogynistic males should not be identified with any particular party,” she remarked, underlining that such behavior transcends political affiliations. She expressed frustration with the way women are often sidelined and undermined within the political structure. “They undermine women’s merit, hard work, and determination,” she said.

Along with addressing internal party issues, Haldar also discussed concerns regarding urban and environmental issues in Kolkata. She announced that the Borough offices and Horticulture Department would conduct a thorough inspection of all trees in the city, especially around Rabindra Sarovar and Subhash Sarovar, in light of a recent incident in Howrah. She proposed a citywide tree audit to ensure that no trees pose a risk to public safety, adding that those exceeding certain heights, such as 10 to 12 feet, may need to be removed or trimmed. This initiative, according to Haldar, would help prevent incidents like the one in Howrah, where a tree reportedly caused significant damage.

In her remarks about Kolkata’s Wetlands, Haldar acknowledged the vital role these areas play in the city’s ecosystem. She emphasized that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is committed to preserving nature and maintaining the Wetlands as an important natural asset. Haldar outlined plans to develop these wetlands as tourism hubs, promoting activities such as fish farming and boating, in accordance with the Waterland Act. “If money is needed for that, we will ensure it is done beautifully, preserving both the ecology and the cultural heritage of the city,” she said.

On the topic of water supply and metro development, Haldar mentioned that discussions are ongoing regarding the city’s water distribution, particularly in areas like Tala. She stated that alternative solutions are being explored to avoid disruptions. Additionally, she addressed concerns about the impact of flooding on Kolkata’s metro tunnels, highlighting the urgent need for repairs if floodwaters breach the infrastructure. “If water from the road enters their metro system, immediate repairs will be necessary,” she said, pointing out the vulnerability of Kolkata’s metro system to monsoon-induced flooding.

Throughout her statements, Haldar made it clear that these issues must be addressed with urgency, but she also refrained from politicizing them. She noted that her interactions with RBNL (Railway Board of National Logistics) were part of a peaceful meeting, where a preliminary report had been shared. Further planning and joint inspections will take place after the upcoming Durga Puja festival. Haldar urged the involved parties to work together to find solutions without turning these matters into political battlegrounds.

As Rajnya Haldar continues to speak out against misogyny within her own party and push for changes in both political culture and urban development, her actions are likely to have lasting consequences on the ongoing debates within the Trinamool Congress. With her calls for action and accountability resonating with many, the coming weeks could be pivotal in determining whether the party is willing to confront the issues she has raised and make meaningful changes.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Conferred Ghana’s Highest National Honor, Strengthening India-Ghana Ties

Baby Chakraborty | KalimNews | July 4, 2025 | New Delhi : In a significant moment of international recognition, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred with Ghana’s highest national award—the Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana—by President John Dramani Mahama in Accra on Thursday. The honor was bestowed upon him in acknowledgement of his outstanding contribution to strengthening bilateral relations between India and Ghana, as well as his role in promoting South-South cooperation and global partnerships.

This prestigious accolade adds to a long list of national and international awards already received by Prime Minister Modi, further reflecting his growing diplomatic stature on the world stage. Expressing his gratitude upon receiving the honor, the Prime Minister emphasized the collective nature of the recognition. Taking to his official handle on X, he wrote, “I am proud to receive Ghana’s highest national award. This is not just a personal achievement. Rather, I am accepting it on behalf of the 1.4 billion people of India.”

He further remarked, “The India-Ghana bilateral relations will deepen further. After this honor, the responsibility has also increased.” Modi reiterated that the award symbolizes the enduring friendship between the two nations and dedicated it to India’s youth, its rich cultural heritage, and the shared commitment of India and Ghana to inclusive development.

This historic visit marks Prime Minister Modi’s first trip to Ghana as head of the Indian government. He arrived at Kotoka International Airport in Accra on Wednesday afternoon, where he was warmly received by President Mahama with a ceremonial embrace. A guard of honour was presented in his welcome, and traditional Ghanaian customs were observed to greet the visiting dignitary.

Adding a heartwarming touch to the diplomatic event, a group of local schoolchildren gathered at Modi’s hotel to sing devotional hymns including “Hare Ram Hare Krishna.” The Prime Minister, visibly moved, smiled and listened to the performance with appreciation. A video capturing the moment quickly went viral across social media platforms, resonating with audiences in both countries.

This honor from Ghana stands as a testament to the growing strategic, economic, and cultural ties between the two democracies. As Prime Minister Modi continues to promote India’s engagement with Africa, this gesture from Ghana underscores the mutual respect and shared aspirations that form the foundation of India-Africa relations.

Taliban Strikes Again: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Bleeds as Militancy Escalates in Pakistan

Baby Chakraborty | KalimNews | July 4, 2025 : Pakistan continues to reel under the grip of militancy as the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) intensifies its violent campaign, plunging the nation into deeper unrest. On Wednesday afternoon, the troubled Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province was once again the target of a deadly militant attack that killed five people, including two senior government officials, and left eleven others injured. The attack has sent shockwaves through the country, further exposing the deteriorating security situation in a region already plagued by years of extremist violence.

According to officials and reports from the Associated Press, the attack occurred in the Bajaur district—an area near the Afghan border known for its heavy tribal population and long history of militant activity. Militants reportedly launched a grenade attack on a government vehicle traveling along Naogai Road in the Siddiqabad Railway area of Khar tehsil. The explosion was devastating.

Among the deceased were Bajaur Assistant Commissioner Faizal Ismail and Sub-Divisional Magistrate Abdul Wakil. Two police personnel and a civilian also lost their lives in the blast. Bajaur Police Chief Waqas Rafique confirmed that the attack was deliberately aimed at a government convoy. Emergency responders rushed to the scene and swiftly transported the injured to a nearby hospital, where several remain in critical condition.

While no group has officially claimed responsibility for the attack, investigators suspect the involvement of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan. The TTP, believed to be backed and ideologically aligned with elements in Afghanistan, has long been one of Pakistan’s most dangerous insurgent groups. Security forces are currently conducting a thorough investigation to trace the perpetrators and understand the precise nature of the attack.

This incident is part of a broader and increasingly alarming pattern. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, along with Balochistan and regions along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, has become a stronghold for TTP and other extremist factions. These areas frequently witness ambushes, targeted killings, and bombings aimed at both Pakistani security forces and infrastructure projects.

Of particular concern is the threat these militants pose to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a strategic initiative involving multi-billion-dollar Chinese investments in Pakistani infrastructure. Several attacks in recent years have targeted Chinese nationals and CPEC-related assets, with TTP often being the prime suspect. The group’s continued operations threaten not only Pakistan’s internal security but also its international partnerships and economic future.

Balochistan, too, is facing an identity and territorial crisis amid growing insurgent sentiment, while the broader militant resurgence has left the Pakistani government struggling to assert control. With the frequency and scale of attacks on the rise, national stability remains precarious.

As Pakistan mourns yet another bloody attack, questions are being raised about the government’s strategy in curbing militancy and securing its restive regions. The revival and resilience of TTP continue to cast a dark shadow over Pakistan’s already fragile internal peace.

Swami Vivekananda’s influence transcended religious lines; he was not only a spiritual leader but also a reformer, a humanitarian, and a global ambassador of India’s ancient wisdom. His famous call—“Arise, awake and stop not till the goal is reached”—continues to ignite the spirit of determination and purpose in the hearts of millions.

On this Tirodhan Diwas, as the nation remembered Swamiji with devotion, people from all walks of life reaffirmed their commitment to his ideals of self-reliance, service, and fearless pursuit of truth. His life and message remain a luminous beacon in India’s spiritual and cultural landscape, urging every individual to rise above limitations and serve humanity with compassion and strength.

New Academic Work by Dr. Varbi Roy Explores Social Dimensions of Knowledge

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, July 3, 2025, Kolkata: A significant new addition to the field of philosophy was unveiled at Scottish Church College with the release of Extended Knowledge & Social Epistemology, an academic publication by Dr. Varbi Roy, Associate Professor of Philosophy at the college. The launch was held in collaboration with the Bhaktivedanta Research Center (BRC), marking a notable academic partnership aimed at advancing research into evolving epistemological theories.

In this pioneering study, Dr. Roy addresses an area of philosophical inquiry that has remained largely underrepresented in Indian academia—social epistemology. His work not only traces the trajectory of epistemological thought but also underscores the emergence of social epistemology as a crucial and contemporary development within it. By focusing on how knowledge is shaped within social frameworks and communities, the book opens a necessary conversation on collective epistemic processes in today’s globally interconnected society.

Targeted at students, academics, and scholars, Extended Knowledge & Social Epistemology is particularly relevant in the Indian context, where applied branches of philosophy such as social epistemology have not yet gained wide traction. Dr. Roy’s work aims to address this gap, offering a comprehensive and accessible examination of how knowledge is influenced, validated, and transmitted in social environments.

Dr. Roy is a faculty member at Scottish Church College, an institution recognized with a NAAC Grade ‘A’ and known for its distinguished intellectual legacy. The college has produced renowned alumni such as Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Swami Vivekananda, and A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. In keeping with this tradition of academic excellence, Dr. Roy’s contribution represents a continuation of the college’s role in fostering critical philosophical discourse and rigorous research.

The research was supported and funded by the Bhaktivedanta Research Center (BRC), an ISO-certified institution with a strong national and international presence. The BRC offers advanced academic programs, including Master’s and PhD degrees in philosophy, and is committed to the preservation and dissemination of India’s philosophical and cultural heritage. The Center played an instrumental role in the publication of the book, reaffirming its dedication to promoting scholarly work of lasting impact.

Commenting on the importance of the publication, Dr. Sumanta Rudra, Academic Dean of BRC, remarked, “Dr. Roy’s work is a significant contribution that is sure to leave a lasting legacy in this academic area. By mapping the intellectual history of social epistemology and illuminating how knowledge originates and operates within social contexts, it calls for deeper reflection on the nature of knowing in today’s interconnected world. It has been a great pleasure and honour for the Bhaktivedanta Research Center to support this important research and publication, which brings new insights to a much-needed area of philosophical inquiry.”

Extended Knowledge & Social Epistemology is poised to become an essential resource for those interested in the social aspects of knowledge production. Shamik Bhattacharya Named New Bengal BJP President Ahead of 2026 Polls

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, July 3, 2025, Kolkata : The long-running speculation over who would succeed Sukanta Majumdar as the President of the West Bengal unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to an end on Wednesday, as Shamik Bhattacharya was confirmed as the new state BJP chief. The decision was cemented after a crucial call was reportedly received from BJP National President JP Nadda on Wednesday afternoon, effectively sealing Bhattacharya’s appointment.

According to senior BJP sources in the state, Bhattacharya had been a frontrunner in the race for the post. His name had been circulating within party circles for several weeks, and Wednesday’s development has now put an end to all speculation. With this announcement, Bhattacharya assumes the top leadership role at a critical juncture, with the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections on the horizon.

Shamik Bhattacharya brings a mixed electoral history to his new role. He first entered the West Bengal Legislative Assembly through a by-election win in 2014 from the Basirhat South constituency, serving as an MLA until 2016. However, he lost the seat in the 2016 assembly election to Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate Dipendu Biswas. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Bhattacharya contested from the Dum Dum parliamentary constituency but was defeated by veteran TMC leader Saugata Roy. Again, in the 2021 state assembly polls, he contested from Rajarhat Gopalpur but lost to Aditi Munshi of the TMC. Despite these setbacks in electoral politics, his stature within the BJP has continued to rise. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha on April 4, 2025, and was inducted as a member of the party’s core committee in 2024, signaling his growing influence within the organization.

His appointment comes at a time when the BJP is recalibrating its strategy in West Bengal, following its mixed performance in the 2024 general elections and internal organizational restructuring. The leadership change is being viewed as a strategic move to energize the party’s base in the state and prepare for a more cohesive campaign for the upcoming assembly elections.

Reacting to the news, BJP national vice president and former state president Dilip Ghosh remarked, “Our party functions democratically. According to the BJP’s constitution, internal elections are held every three years, and that process is taking place across the country, including in West Bengal. Leaders are selected after consultation with the central leadership, and we work under their guidance.”

With Bhattacharya at the helm, the BJP’s West Bengal unit is expected to undergo significant strategic shifts. The party leadership appears to be banking on his organizational experience and proximity to central leaders to strengthen its footing in the state and mount a strong challenge to the ruling Trinamool Congress in 2026. His elevation marks not only a personal milestone in his political journey but also a potentially pivotal moment for the BJP’s future in Bengal.

Tensions Rise in Pacific Region as China-Pakistan-Bangladesh Alliance Looms, White House Confirms Growing India-US Partnership

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews  July 3, 2025, Kolkata : Amid rising geopolitical tensions in the Asia-Pacific, China, Pakistan, and Bangladesh are reportedly moving toward the formation of a strategic alliance, a development that could significantly alter the power dynamics in the region. This anticipated coalition has sparked concerns in both India and the United States, as it poses potential challenges to their influence in the Pacific, according to White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt.

Speaking to reporters just days before a crucial trade agreement between the United States and India was expected to be signed, Levitt emphasized the importance of the growing India-US strategic partnership, particularly in the face of China’s increasing ambitions in the Pacific. “India is an incredibly important partner for us in the geostrategic field in the Asia-Pacific,” Levitt stated, highlighting the strength of the diplomatic ties between the two nations. “Our President and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have a very strong working relationship,” she added, underscoring the cooperation between the leaders of both countries.

This comment came in response to a query regarding China’s expanding influence in the Pacific region. Levitt’s remarks also underscored the pivotal role of the Quad, an informal strategic alliance involving the United States, India, Japan, and Australia, which has been actively working to counter China’s growing military and economic presence in the region.

The growing concerns about China’s aggressive expansion are not isolated. Reports from Monday revealed that China, Pakistan, and Bangladesh might be on the brink of forming a formal alliance, which could complicate India and America’s efforts in the Pacific. Should such an alliance come to fruition, it would inevitably escalate tensions in the region, creating new security and diplomatic challenges for both India and the United States.

Levitt also took the opportunity to confirm that a significant trade agreement between India and the United States would be finalized soon. She reiterated that President Biden had announced the imminent signing of the trade deal last week, signaling a major step forward in strengthening economic relations between the two nations. “As the President mentioned last week, there will be an India-US trade agreement very soon, and that is indeed going to happen,” Levitt stated.

Adding further context to the geopolitical landscape, External Affairs Minister of India, S. Jaishankar, was scheduled to fly to Washington on Monday to participate in a high-level Quad meeting. The Quad’s increasing role in regional security, particularly in countering China’s influence, has made India’s position in the group even more critical.

As global attention remains focused on the shifting dynamics in the Pacific, the collaboration between India and the United States appears to be growing ever more vital. The upcoming trade agreement, combined with the ongoing discussions within the Quad, reflects the deepening ties between the two democracies, setting the stage for a more robust partnership in both the strategic and economic arenas.

In the wake of these developments, all eyes will be on how China, Pakistan, and Bangladesh’s potential alliance shapes the future of regional security and the balance of power in the Asia-Pacific

TMC Distances Itself from Leaders’ Controversial Remarks Amid Outrage Over South Calcutta Law College Rape Case

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, June 28, 2025, Kolkata :
A disturbing case of alleged gang rape of a 24-year-old female law student at South Calcutta Law College on June 25, 2025, has not only sparked public outrage but also ignited a political storm in West Bengal. The incident, which occurred within the premises of the college located in the Kasba area of Kolkata, led to the arrest of three individuals, including Manojit Mishra, a former leader of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), the student wing of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC). The arrests were followed by a four-day police remand, with investigators seizing the accused’s mobile phones to verify the victim’s allegation that the incident may have been recorded.

The incident has drawn widespread condemnation and reignited debates over women’s safety in educational institutions, especially in light of a similar controversy earlier this year at RG Kar Medical College. However, the political fallout intensified after controversial comments were made by two senior TMC leaders—Member of Parliament Kalyan Banerjee and Member of Legislative Assembly Madan Mitra—who made statements that many have found deeply insensitive and inappropriate in the context of such a grave crime.

Sreerampur MP Kalyan Banerjee, reacting to the incident, made remarks that were widely perceived as trivializing the trauma of the survivor. He stated, “If a friend rapes a friend, what can be done? Will police be deployed in schools?” Further elaborating, he added, “This was done by students to another student. Who will protect her? Who does all this criminality and molestation? Some men do it. So, who should women fight against? Women should fight against these perverted men.” While Banerjee did emphasize that the perpetrator should be arrested and the crime should be dealt with legally, he questioned the classification of the act as political or institutional, remarking, “This crime is not linked to any party or organisation.” He also appeared to downplay the systemic nature of the issue by suggesting that criminal acts among acquaintances fall outside the purview of political accountability.

MLA Madan Mitra’s remarks were even more contentious, drawing sharp criticism from civil society and political opponents alike. In his comments, Mitra appeared to shift the burden of responsibility onto the victim, stating, “If that girl had not gone there, this wouldn’t have happened. If she had informed someone before going or had taken a couple of friends with her, then this wouldn’t have happened.” He further added, “The one who committed this dirty deed took advantage of the situation.” These comments have been interpreted as victim-blaming and were widely condemned across social media platforms and in political discourse.

Faced with growing public anger and strong objections from opposition parties, particularly the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which labeled the remarks “shameful,” the Trinamool Congress was compelled to issue an official clarification. On the evening of June 27, 2025, TMC released a statement via its verified account on the platform X, formerly known as Twitter. The statement read, “The remarks made by MP Kalyan Banerjee and MLA Madan Mitra concerning the heinous crime at South Calcutta Law College were made in their personal capacities. The party unequivocally disassociates itself from their statements and strongly condemns the same. These views do not reflect the position of the party in any manner whatsoever.”

Meanwhile, Trinankur Bhattacharya, state president of the TMCP, attempted to further distance the organization from the accused, stating that the TMCP unit at South Calcutta Law College has been inactive since 2019. He said, “He (Mishra) was in office in 2019. How do we know that he will do this in 2025?”

The situation remains tense as public demands grow for both accountability and reforms in campus safety protocols. The political ramifications of this case continue to evolve, with the spotlight now firmly on the actions and statements of elected representatives, and the broader responsibility of political parties in shaping public discourse on gender-based violence.

Widespread Civil Unrest Brews in Bengal as Job Seekers and Civic Bodies Unite for July 28 ‘Nabanna Chalo’ Movement

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, Kolkata, June 28, 2025 :  A strong wave of civil discontent is sweeping across West Bengal, with a large section of deprived job seekers and unemployed youth coming together under the banner of the West Bengal Deprived Job Seekers, Jobseekers and Job-losers’ Unity Forum. This collective has announced a major statewide mobilization—‘Nabanna Chalo’, a protest march to the State Secretariat on July 28—as a manifestation of public frustration over rising unemployment, alleged recruitment corruption, and administrative inaction.

The movement, garnering growing public and organizational support, is backed by prominent civil society bodies including the West Bengal Democratic Citizens’ Forum and the Sangrami Samiti Manch. These groups, standing in solidarity with the Unity Forum, held a joint press conference to outline their concerns and a series of demands aimed at addressing what they describe as an alarming erosion of democratic accountability and justice in recruitment processes across the state.

Among the key demands put forth are the immediate implementation of a transparent and permanent recruitment process to fill an estimated 600,000 vacancies in various state departments. Protesters are also calling for complete autonomy for recruitment bodies such as the Public Service Commission (PSC) and School Service Commission (SSC), to ensure independence and integrity in the hiring process.

Another significant concern raised is the plight of candidates whose appointments were either cancelled or withheld due to alleged corruption. The Forum is demanding immediate reinstatement of these eligible individuals. The agitators have also emphasized the need to revive the SSC 2016 panel by publicly releasing the OMR sheets to verify eligible candidates and finalize appointments that have remained in limbo for years.

Furthermore, in line with earlier commitments made by the Education Minister, the Unity Forum is pressing for the issuance of new SSC notifications to address 1.5 lakh vacant teaching posts in higher educational institutions. They are also demanding the payment of 25% of outstanding Dearness Allowance (DA) to state government employees, in accordance with an interim Supreme Court directive.

Beyond employment-related grievances, the movement also encompasses broader social concerns, including women’s safety and the protection of OBC candidates’ constitutional rights, particularly those affected by recent changes in classification policies.

Shubhajit Duttagupta, convenor of the West Bengal Democratic Citizens’ Forum, emphasized that this movement is not merely a call for jobs but a larger campaign to restore democratic and civil rights. He asserted that the Forum, acting as a unified platform for multiple civic organizations, is committed to intensifying the struggle and empowering marginalized voices. “The long wait of the deprived and the continued reaction of neglect demand an urgent collective response,” he said.

Duttagupta further alleged that the results of numerous state recruitment exams have either been unduly delayed or manipulated, exacerbating the crisis of unemployment and heightening public mistrust in institutional fairness. He issued a strong call for all civil society organizations, including those not currently affiliated with the Forum, to come together in a united front of resistance on July 28.

As disillusionment with governance and procedural opacity deepens, the ‘Nabanna Chalo’ movement appears poised to become a significant episode in the state’s civic and political history. The stage is set for a showdown between a government grappling with legitimacy questions in its employment policies and a coalition of citizens determined to reclaim transparency, justice, and their right to dignified livelihoods.

Law Student Allegedly Raped on College Campus in Kolkata, Accused Linked to Political Party

Agencies, Kolkata, June 27, 2025 – A law student was allegedly assaulted and raped on the premises of South Calcutta Law College on Wednesday, June 25, in a harrowing incident that has triggered widespread outrage and political debate in West Bengal. The Kolkata Police arrested three individuals, including the main accused, a former student of the college, on the evening of June 26. The survivor filed a police complaint detailing the brutal ordeal, which lasted over three hours.

According to the police, the student had visited the campus for some official work in the late afternoon, and it was around 6:00 pm when the main accused, who was present for an event, first approached her. The man, identified as a former student of the college and a temporary employee at the institution, reportedly promised the victim a prominent position in the college union if she complied with his demands. He also spoke of a “loyalty test” she would have to undergo, though the exact nature of this test was not clarified.

The victim later alleged that the accused proposed marriage to her, to which she refused, citing her existing relationship. As she attempted to leave the campus, she was allegedly stopped by the accused and two accomplices. Manojit Mishra is the prime accused, while  Pramit Mukherjee and Zaib Ahmed are co accused, The trio then forcibly took her to a room, where she was sexually assaulted. A security guard, who was on duty at the time, reportedly heard the victim’s cries and came to her aid, but he too was beaten up by the accused. The vice-principal of the college later stated that the institution had only one sanctioned security guard at the time.

After the initial assault, the victim was moved to another room, where the main accused allegedly raped her while the other two men stood guard. Sources close to the police indicated that the crime was recorded by the perpetrators on video. In her complaint, the victim further alleged that the men struck her with a hockey stick and threatened to kill her boyfriend if she reported the incident to the authorities. The assault continued for approximately three hours, during which the victim was subjected to immense physical and emotional trauma.

The victim’s complaint also mentioned that the accused threatened to release the video of the assault if she contacted the police. However, despite the threats, the survivor managed to file a formal complaint with the Kasba police station.

In a swift response, the police apprehended the three accused on the evening of June 26. The main accused is reportedly a practising lawyer at Alipore Court, in addition to his temporary employment at the college. The police are continuing their investigation, and all three men will be produced in court.

The incident has taken a political turn, with opposition parties in Bengal using it as ammunition to criticize the ruling Trinamool Congress. The main accused’s alleged ties to the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), the student wing of the party, have raised serious concerns. The accused’s social media profiles show his involvement with the TMCP’s south Kolkata unit since 2020, and several images on his profile feature him with senior Trinamool leaders.

Opposition leaders, including BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari, have condemned the incident, pointing to the alleged criminalisation of politics in Bengal since the Trinamool Congress assumed power in 2011. “This is not just a horrendous crime, it is a glaring example of the criminalisation within the Trinamool Congress,” Adhikari said, referring to the alleged misuse of power by student leaders associated with the ruling party.

The Congress also voiced strong criticism, with the state Congress president, Shubhankar Sarkar, accusing the Trinamool government of not taking sufficient action against its leaders involved in criminal activities. “The state government did not learn any lessons from past incidents,” Sarkar said, referencing a previous scandal at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. He further claimed that the state’s failure to act had emboldened criminals and anti-social elements in the state.

The CPI(M) joined the chorus of criticism, with Satarup Ghosh blaming the Trinamool Congress’s refusal to hold college union elections for creating a breeding ground for criminal activity on campuses. “College unions have been occupied by criminals like the accused in the Kasba case,” Ghosh said.

In response to the allegations, Trinamool MLA Ashok Deb, who is also the president of the college’s governing body, expressed his intention to take “strongest action” against those responsible. He added that the matter would be handled by the courts.

Meanwhile, the National Commission for Women (NCW) has called for a report on the case from the Kolkata Police Commissioner within three days. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities vowing to ensure justice for the victim.

Major Moiz Abbas Shah, ‘Abhinandan Captor’, Killed in Anti-Terror Operation: Pakistan’s Strategic Duplicity Under Renewed Scrutiny

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, June 25, 2025, Kolkata :
Major Syed Moiz Abbas Shah of the Pakistan Army, who gained international attention in 2019 for claiming to have captured Indian Air Force Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, was killed in an encounter with militants in South Waziristan. The incident, confirmed by the Pakistan Army’s Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), has once again cast a spotlight on Pakistan’s complex and controversial relationship with extremist groups it once supported.

The 37-year-old officer, a native of Chakwal district and a member of the elite Special Services Group (SSG), died during an operation against Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants in the volatile Sararogha region near the Afghan border. Alongside Major Moiz, Lance Naik Jibran Ullah, 27, also lost his life in the fierce encounter. According to official statements, Pakistani troops neutralized 11 TTP militants and injured seven others in the operation.

Moiz’s death marks a grim twist in the narrative of Pakistan’s decades-long entanglement with militant outfits. Once hailed as a ‘hero’ by Pakistani media for his role in capturing Wing Commander Abhinandan following the 2019 aerial dogfight triggered by the Pulwama attack, Major Moiz became a symbol of Pakistan’s military triumph in the eyes of its public. An old interview with Geo TV, now recirculating online, features Moiz—then a captain—recounting how he saved Abhinandan from a violent mob after his MiG-21 was downed in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

Funeral services for Major Moiz were held at Chaklala Garrison in Rawalpindi, with Pakistan Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir attending and honouring his sacrifice. “Major Syed Moiz Abbas fought bravely in the face of resistance and ultimately laid down his life in the line of duty, upholding the highest traditions of bravery, sacrifice, and patriotism,” the ISPR quoted Munir as saying. His body was flown to his hometown, where he was buried with full military honours.

Moiz had been commissioned into the Pakistan Army in 2011 and later joined the SSG, Pakistan’s top-tier special operations force. At the time of his death, he was posted in one of the most restive and dangerous regions of Pakistan, battling the very forces once allegedly nurtured by the state itself.

The TTP, an umbrella organization formed in 2007 after the controversial Red Mosque siege in Islamabad, initially flourished with indirect backing from elements within Pakistan’s security establishment. Trained and radicalized in camps affiliated with groups like Lashkar-e-Jhangvi and Jaish-e-Mohammad, TTP militants have since turned their weapons against the Pakistani state. Once a “strategic asset,” the TTP has become a domestic nightmare.

Over the years, the TTP has been responsible for a string of deadly attacks including the 2008 Marriott Hotel bombing, the 2009 assault on Pakistan’s military headquarters, and numerous strikes on military bases. Described by Pakistan’s leadership as “Fitna al-Khawarij”—a term from early Islamic history denoting violent rebellion—the group remains closely associated with global jihadist networks, including al-Qaeda.

Since 2024, more than 1,200 Pakistani military and police personnel have been killed in TTP-linked violence. In 2025 alone, at least 116 soldiers have died in such attacks. Major Moiz Abbas Shah is the latest in this mounting toll—a name once used to fan nationalist fervour now etched into the growing list of victims of the very militancy Pakistan once overlooked.

This incident has reignited intense debate about the contradictions in Pakistan’s security and foreign policy. Observers and analysts argue that the tragic death of Major Moiz encapsulates the consequences of long-standing state complicity with militant groups. A man once celebrated for capturing an Indian pilot has now fallen to bullets fired by those bred in the very shadows of Pakistan’s fragmented militant policy.

Abhishek Banerjee to Launch ‘Silent Revolution’ Today, Reflecting on Unseen Development in Diamond Harbour

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, June 25, 2025, Kolkata : In a bold move to highlight his contributions to his constituency, Member of Parliament Abhishek Banerjee is set to release his much-anticipated book, Silent Revolution, today. The book delves into the extensive development work undertaken by Banerjee in the Diamond Harbour region, where he has served as the MP for over a decade.

Banerjee, who secured a historic victory in the 2024 general elections with an overwhelming number of votes, is using this book as a platform to outline the progress his area has experienced under his leadership. With the state assembly elections just around the corner in 2026, the launch of Silent Revolution comes at a crucial time, creating considerable buzz in political circles across the state.

The title, Silent Revolution, is a reflection of the low-key but transformative nature of Banerjee’s work in the region. According to local party workers and leadership in South 24 Parganas, the transformation of Diamond Harbour over the past eleven years is nothing short of remarkable. They point out that the area has seen an unprecedented level of development, driven largely by Banerjee’s efforts, though much of it has gone unnoticed by the wider public due to its understated approach.

The book aims to shed light on this “silent” but impactful revolution, where changes have quietly reshaped the face of the constituency, from infrastructural upgrades to social welfare initiatives. As described by his supporters, Abhishek Banerjee’s approach to development has always been about action over rhetoric, a philosophy that has earned him respect from his constituents despite the minimal public fanfare surrounding his initiatives.

The upcoming release has stirred considerable interest within the state’s political landscape, with many seeing it as a strategic move ahead of the upcoming assembly elections. With only a year to go, the book is expected to serve as a reminder of Banerjee’s long-standing commitment to his region, as well as a testament to his vision for the future of Diamond Harbour and beyond.
