Bidhannagar Police Summon Jobless Protesters Over Bikash Bhavan Clash; Legal Action Intensifies
Baby Chakraborty | KalimNews | May 18, 2025 | Kolkata : The Bidhannagar Police have filed cases against several individuals involved in the May 16 protest outside Bikash Bhavan, accusing them of multiple serious offenses including rioting, assaulting public servants, destruction of government property, and criminal conspiracy. The protesters, primarily jobless teachers and education staff affected by the cancellation of the 2016 SSC panel, have been summoned to appear at the Bidhannagar North Police Station at 11 a.m. on May 21. The summons warns that failure to appear could result in arrest.
The protest on Thursday turned chaotic as thousands gathered outside the Education Department headquarters in Salt Lake, demanding reinstatement and other remedial action. Demonstrators allegedly broke through the main gate, staged a sit-in, and reportedly confined government staff inside the premises. Law enforcement officials claimed they exercised “minimum force” to disperse the crowd and assist trapped employees, during which a scuffle reportedly broke out.
According to official sources, the police have invoked several sections of the Indian Penal Code including criminal trespass, wrongful restraint and confinement, voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from duty, disobedience to official orders, assault or use of criminal force against public servants, criminal intimidation, and obstructing public functions. Sections under the Prevention of Damage to Public Property (PDPP) Act have also been applied. The summons issued to the protesters stated: “During the course of the investigation, it is revealed that you damaged government property and obstructed the public servant from his lawful duty and threatened the public servant from doing their duty, and there are also reasonable grounds to question you to ascertain facts and circumstances from you in relation to the present investigation.”
In a related move, Kolkata Commissioner of Police Manoj Kumar Verma has directed all police stations under his jurisdiction to stay alert and prepared for similar situations in other parts of the city. He reportedly urged officials to exercise restraint and patience while dealing with protestors, aiming to avoid escalation while maintaining public order.
Meanwhile, the West Bengal Commission for Protection of Child Rights has taken note of the situation and requested a report from Bidhannagar City Police. The commission’s intervention came after visuals emerged of minor students attending open-air classes on the road outside Bikash Bhavan, conducted by the protesting teachers under the banner of ‘Udayan Pandit er Pathshala’.
Protests continued for the fourth consecutive day on Sunday, with displaced teachers staging demonstrations outside the Education Department building. The protestors have remained defiant in the face of legal action. “They are doing all these to intimidate us. But we are not scared and will not stop our protest. They [the state government] did all the corruption, and now the police are issuing summons to us,” said one of the protesting teachers.
With legal proceedings underway and administrative preparations in motion, the situation remains tense as May 21 approaches, when the summoned individuals are expected to appear before the police for questioning.
Kolkata Police Tightens Surveillance Amid Reports of Pakistani Flag Misuse to Prevent Communal Unrest
Baby Chakraborty | KalimNews | May 18, 2025 | Kolkata : In a significant move to maintain public order and prevent the misuse of national symbols for inciting unrest, Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma has issued strict directives to all police stations under his jurisdiction to intensify surveillance over the sale, purchase, and printing of Pakistani flags in the city. This decision was taken during the monthly crime review meeting held on Saturday, where multiple sensitive issues related to law and order were discussed.
Commissioner Verma has instructed officers to gather detailed intelligence regarding any individual or group involved in the creation, distribution, or procurement of Pakistani flags. He emphasized that such activities, particularly in the current context of heightened Indo-Pakistan tensions, could be manipulated by anti-social elements to provoke communal disharmony. Law enforcement personnel have been tasked with identifying printing presses and vendors that may be approached for manufacturing these flags and to closely track any transactions related to them. Police officers are also required to document the reasons buyers are citing for purchasing these flags and to assess any potential risks arising from such acquisitions.
The urgency of the directive follows recent incidents in which two individuals were arrested in Bangaon for allegedly attempting to instigate communal unrest using the Pakistani flag, shortly after the Pahalgaon attack. These arrests have underscored the potential for symbolic provocations to escalate tensions, prompting a zero-tolerance policy from the police.
Furthermore, the Commissioner addressed concerns surrounding the teachers’ agitation at Vikas Bhavan in Bidhannagar and the ongoing WAQF Act protests. Stations located in areas previously affected by such demonstrations have been placed on high alert, and officials have been asked to intensify information gathering through discreet channels to preempt any disturbances. Instructions were also issued to prevent the WAQF-related protests from being misused as a platform for wider unrest.
This renewed vigilance comes in the wake of earlier complaints by the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), which reported that e-commerce platforms were selling items representing enemy nations, including the Pakistani flag, purely for profit. In a formal letter to Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and Consumer Protection Minister Pralhad Joshi, CAIT urged a ban on such sales. The matter drew the attention of the Consumer Protection Ministry, which took steps to investigate the online availability of these products.
In response to the evolving situation, Kolkata Police has made it clear that the presence and misuse of foreign national flags, particularly those of hostile nations, will be dealt with sternly. The force remains committed to preserving public harmony and upholding national dignity, warning that any attempts to disturb peace under the guise of protest or symbolism will not be tolerated.
Trinamool Congress Reshuffles Leadership, Anubrata Mondal Removed as Birbhum District President
A senior party leader, speaking on the condition of anonymity, acknowledged that Mondal’s removal follows the political fallout from his arrest, along with his daughter, by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (ED) in relation to a high-profile investigation into alleged illegal activities. The media’s coverage of their vast assets has caused significant damage to the party’s image, according to the leader.
Mondal, who had been a prominent figure in the TMC, was released on bail in 2024 after serving a two-year sentence in connection with a cow smuggling case. His ousting is widely interpreted as signaling a new direction for the party as it seeks to distance itself from ongoing controversies.
Meanwhile, in Murshidabad, the leadership structure remains largely unchanged. Former minister Zakir Hossain will continue in his role as chairman of the Murshidabad-Jangipur unit. MP Khalilur Rahman will also retain his position as president despite some internal discontent that surfaced following last month’s violent protests against the Waqf Act.
In the Berhampur unit, changes were also observed. Kandi MLA Apurba Sarkar will remain as president. However, there has been a reshuffle in the chairman’s position, with Rejinagar MLA Rabiul Alam Chowdhury being replaced by Hariharpara MLA Niamat Sheikh.
The ongoing leadership changes and reorganization within the party reflect efforts to strengthen its organizational structure, especially in the wake of internal and external challenges. As the party adjusts to the shifting political landscape, it remains to be seen how these changes will impact its future strategies and electoral performance.

Ceasefire Between India and Pakistan Extended Until May 18 Amid Ongoing Tensions and Diplomatic Dialogue
Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, May 17, 2025, New Delhi : A ceasefire between India and Pakistan has been extended until May 18 following high-level discussions, as confirmed by sources familiar with the developments. This agreement comes amid heightened tensions following a series of military escalations along the Line of Control (LoC) and international border areas in recent days.
According to reliable sources, the Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both nations are scheduled to meet soon to further discuss the ongoing ceasefire agreement and the phased withdrawal of troops. This meeting is expected to review ground-level developments along the border and evaluate the effectiveness of existing confidence-building measures.
The ceasefire, initially agreed upon on May 10, followed significant hostilities including drone and missile exchanges. India’s launch of Operation Sindoor on the night of May 7-8 marked a decisive military response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which claimed 26 lives. The operation targeted and destroyed nine terrorist camps in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), reportedly leading to a severe escalation in retaliatory actions from Pakistan.
In response, Pakistan launched cross-border drone and rocket attacks on Indian civilian zones and military positions. India, in turn, intercepted several aerial threats and struck back at key Pakistani air bases and military installations. As tensions mounted, Pakistan approached India with a proposal for a ceasefire, reportedly following diplomatic intervention from the United States.
Despite the ceasefire declaration on May 10, Pakistan violated the agreement within hours. Continued border skirmishes prompted renewed talks between the two countries to de-escalate the situation and reduce alert levels along the LoC.
The Indian Army, in an official statement, noted that “further to the understanding between the two DGMOs on 10th May 2025, it has been decided to continue the confidence-building measures so as to reduce the alertness level. As the situation develops further, we shall intimate you.”
Sources indicate that both sides have agreed to a framework to continue talks aimed at normalizing border conditions and averting further conflict.
Meanwhile, diplomatic relations between the two nations remain strained. India has suspended the Indus Waters Treaty—an agreement that has governed water sharing between the countries for decades. Pakistan has urged New Delhi to reconsider the move, warning of severe domestic consequences, particularly for regions dependent on the Indus for agriculture and drinking water.
However, India has maintained that the treaty will remain suspended until Pakistan takes “credible and irreversible” action to halt cross-border terrorism.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his address to the nation regarding Operation Sindoor, reaffirmed India’s firm stance, stating, “Terror and talk cannot take place together. Terror and trade cannot take place together. And, water and blood also cannot flow together.”
He further cautioned Pakistan that India’s current pause in military action should not be mistaken for a change in posture, emphasizing that future decisions would be contingent on Pakistan’s conduct.
In a recent statement, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended an offer for peace talks with India, signaling Islamabad’s willingness to engage in dialogue. However, with both sides maintaining strong and opposing positions, the path forward remains uncertain.
As of now, the ceasefire remains in effect, with both militaries observing a fragile truce. The upcoming DGMO meeting is expected to play a crucial role in shaping the next steps in the ongoing standoff.

Protests Intensify at Vikas Bhavan After Violent Clashes Between Teachers and Police
Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, May 16, 2025, Kolkata: The violent clash that unfolded at Vikas Bhavan has sparked outrage across the state, with both teachers and police sustaining injuries amid escalating tensions. The incident, which unfolded throughout the day, has been condemned as a setback for civil discourse, as numerous teachers were reportedly beaten by police officers. Several protesters were injured, some severely, while a police officer was also hurt during the confrontations.
The protest began in the afternoon when the teachers and education workers broke through the gates of Vikas Bhavan, demanding the restoration of their jobs. Tensions escalated as the evening drew on, with protesters accusing the police of using excessive force, including lathi-charges, to disperse the crowd. The scene grew more chaotic as protesters lay bleeding on the ground, claiming that they were qualified teachers who had been unjustly denied employment. Their frustration boiled over, and many declared that they would not sit for exams again, making it clear that their only demand was the return of their jobs.
In the wake of the violent clash, lawyer Rajneel Mukherjee has called for suo motu action by the Calcutta High Court, appealing to the Chief Justice for an investigation into the actions of the Bidhannagar Commissionerate. Mukherjee accused the police of overreacting and unjustly assaulting the teachers, further stoking public anger against the law enforcement’s handling of the situation.
As the protests continued overnight outside Vikas Bhavan, the police were accused of inaction for several hours following an incident in Murshidabad, allowing the situation to deteriorate. The protesters, who remain camped outside the building, have vowed not to leave until the state government reinstates their jobs in a fair and transparent manner. Today, May 16, has been declared a day of protest, with demonstrations expected to persist throughout the day.
Meanwhile, tensions were further inflamed when Trinamool Congress leader Sabyasachi Dutta visited Vikas Bhavan this morning. Witnesses report that Dutta engaged in inappropriate behavior with both the protesting teachers and the media, further exacerbating the already volatile situation. Citizens across Kolkata have expressed their displeasure at the police’s actions, with widespread condemnation of the authorities’ response to the teachers’ peaceful demonstration.
The unrest shows no sign of abating, with protesters continuing to demand justice and the restoration of their jobs. The state government faces mounting pressure to address the grievances of the educators and resolve the standoff.
Unemployed Teachers Continue Protest in Kolkata Amid Rising Tensions and Clashes with Police
Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, May 16, 2025, Kolkata: The protest by jobless teachers and education workers continued in Kolkata today, as they gathered in front of Vikas Bhavan despite yesterday’s tensions. On Thursday, protesters had clashed with police forces after breaking through the gates of the government building. In response, a large barricade was erected outside Vikas Bhavan. However, early this morning, the protesters forcibly removed the barricade, demonstrating their defiance in front of the police.
As the situation escalated, the protesters, who had gathered in large numbers, sat in defiance outside the building, shouting slogans demanding the reinstatement of their jobs. Their chants grew louder as they confronted the law enforcement officers stationed nearby. A heavy police presence has been maintained to control the situation, but the tension remained palpable.
In the aftermath of the incidents, the police filed a suo motu case against the protesters, marking a new phase in the ongoing conflict. This morning, as tensions resurfaced, the protesters once again gathered in front of Vikas Bhavan, vowing to continue their sit-in protest until their demands for employment were met.
The protests are expected to persist throughout the day, with no clear resolution in sight. Local authorities have urged both sides to exercise restraint, but the situation remains tense as negotiations between the protesters and the government have yet to make any significant progress.
Trinamool Distances Itself from MP Saugata Roy’s Controversial Comments on India-Pakistan Conflict
Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, May 16, 2025, Kolkata : In a significant political development, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) was forced to distance itself from its Member of Parliament (MP) Saugata Roy after his controversial comments about the India-Pakistan conflict. Roy, speaking in Parliament and later in an interview with ABP Ananda, downplayed the significance of Operation Sindoor, which had been hailed as a show of strength by India in its response to cross-border terrorism. His remarks, which were heavily criticized by political opponents, led to a wave of protests by the state BJP and a swift distancing by his own party.
Saugata Roy, in his remarks, referred to the India-Pakistan conflict as “almost comical,” claiming, “This war is not a war at all. Some aerial vehicles, drones went from here to there, missiles went from here to there. There were no major losses… Where were the terrorist bases destroyed?… The Central government should put the proof before the people.” He also mocked the national sentiment around the operation, calling it a “sticky emotion,” and questioned the success of India’s military objectives, adding, “India has not succeeded in teaching Pakistan a lesson.”
These comments quickly sparked backlash, especially from the state BJP, which accused Roy of trivializing a matter of national security. On Thursday, the BJP organized a protest march in Muralidhar Sen area, using Roy’s remarks as ammunition to target both the Trinamool Congress and its stance on national defense. The BJP’s anger was compounded by the apparent lack of support from the TMC for its own MP’s comments.
In response to the growing controversy, the Trinamool Congress moved to distance itself from Saugata Roy’s statements. The party issued a clarification, stating, “Let us emphatically state that the statement made by Prof Saugata Roy, MP, is not the opinion of the All India Trinamool Congress.” This public distancing highlights the party’s attempt to manage the fallout, especially with an eye on the upcoming Assembly elections in 2026, where national security and the government’s handling of foreign policy will likely remain key issues.
Despite the controversy, the TMC has been careful not to alienate the general sentiment of respect for the armed forces. It has refrained from joining the Opposition’s calls for a Parliamentary session or an all-party meeting on Operation Sindoor, but has instead focused on supporting the Armed Forces in public statements. The party’s cautious approach reflects its concern over the political significance of the issue and its desire to avoid further damage ahead of next year’s elections.
As tensions continue to rise, both within the party and on the political stage, the spotlight remains on how Saugata Roy’s remarks will affect the TMC’s image and its relations with other political forces. With the BJP seizing the opportunity to criticize the party’s stance on national defense, the Trinamool Congress may need to take further steps to manage the fallout from this contentious issue.

Padma Shri Awardee Scientist Subanna Ayyappan Found Dead in Cauvery River; Police Investigating Cause
Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, May 15, 2025, Delhi : Subanna Ayyappan, the renowned Padma Shri awardee and former Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), was found dead in the Cauvery river in Srirangapatna, Karnataka, on Saturday, three days after his disappearance. His body was recovered by local authorities after being spotted floating in the river, triggering a wave of confusion and speculation regarding the circumstances of his death.
According to police sources, the body was initially unidentifiable, and it wasn’t until Sunday that it was confirmed to be Ayyappan’s after his scooter was found nearby on the banks of the river. Ayyappan, a respected scientist who lived in Mysore with his wife and two daughters, had gone missing after leaving his home on May 7. His family was notified of his death on Sunday evening.
Initial investigations suggest the possibility of suicide, as police believe Ayyappan may have taken his own life. However, the Srirangapatna police have launched a thorough investigation to determine the exact cause of death. Local authorities are exploring all angles, including whether Ayyappan’s regular visits to a nearby ashram for meditation might have played a role in the incident. Family sources confirmed that Ayyappan frequently went to the ashram near the Cauvery river for spiritual reflection, and investigators are trying to ascertain if he had visited the site on the day he went missing.
The tragic news has sent shockwaves through the scientific community, with colleagues and friends mourning the loss of a distinguished figure who made significant contributions to Indian agriculture and research. As the investigation continues, questions remain about the circumstances surrounding his death, and authorities are working to uncover more details to bring clarity to the case.
Hindu Mahasabha Stages Historic Rally in Kolkata Demanding Independent Balochistan
Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, May 15, 2025, Kolkata : In a bold display of solidarity with the people of Balochistan, the Hindu Mahasabha organized a protest rally and roadshow in Kolkata today, advocating for an independent Balochistan and condemning the ongoing atrocities committed by Pakistan against the region. The rally, led by State President Dr. Chandrachud Goswami, took place near Uttam Kumar Metro Station in Tollygunge and saw participation from about fifty members of the political organization.
Dr. Goswami, addressing the crowd, fiercely criticized Pakistan for its treatment of Balochistan, which he described as a Muslim-majority region under brutal occupation. “Although Pakistan talks about Muslim brotherhood, for many years they have been brutally abusing the Muslim-dominated country of Balochistan. They are destroying the dignity of their women,” he stated. The leader also pointed out that Balochistan is critical to Pakistan’s economy, stating, “Dishonest Pakistan should remember that ninety percent of their country’s economy is dependent on Balochistan.”
The Hindu Mahasabha’s support for Balochistan’s independence is not new. Dr. Goswami confirmed that the Mahasabha had reached out to the United Nations, the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, and the leader of Balochistan, Mir Yasir Baloch, urging them to take action for the cause of the Baloch people. “We stand by our Baloch brothers with the last drop of blood in our chest,” Goswami declared.
Other prominent leaders from the Hindu Mahasabha also took the stage, adding weight to the cause. Dr. Surath Chakraborty, a senior member, emphasized that the liberation of Balochistan is crucial to weakening Pakistan’s control over terrorists. “Only if Balochistan is liberated can Pakistani terrorists be suppressed militarily and economically,” Chakraborty argued. He further criticized the Pakistani state, which he said is now under the control of terrorists.
Pandit Subhash Singh Roy, another Mahasabha leader, underscored the historical and cultural ties between India and Balochistan. “Hindustani classical music has established a spiritual connection with Indian soil and our former state of Balochistan for ages,” Roy said. The protest also drew attention to religious sentiments, with Mahasabha Office Secretary Anamika Mandal highlighting the presence of the revered Sati Peeth of Marutirtha Hinglaj in Balochistan. “We Sanatanis must have been specially associated with Balochistan in terms of religious sentiments for many ages,” Mandal added.
Among the many speakers at the event, the words of State Committee members like Manoj Chatterjee, Seema Dutt, and Kajal Halder resonated deeply with the audience. Their speeches inspired widespread enthusiasm and participation.
The rally culminated with Dr. Goswami hoisting the flag of an independent Balochistan, accompanied by the national anthem of Balochistan, performed by the cultural team of the Mahasabha, including Soma De, Lipa Pal, Debangshu Dutta, and Debasrita Dutta.
In a symbolic gesture of support, the participants of the historic roadshow expressed their solidarity for Balochistan and called on the United Nations and Indian leadership to recognize the demand for an independent Balochistan. The streets of Kolkata echoed with slogans of support for the Baloch people, marking a significant moment of political expression and international solidarity in the ongoing struggle for Balochistan’s independence.
