Crisis Looms Over West Bengal Schools as Supreme Court Verdict Results in Mass Teacher Layoffs

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, April 8,  2025, Kolkata :  West Bengal’s educational landscape is facing a significant crisis following the recent Supreme Court verdict, which has led to the cancellation of 25,752 teacher appointments, severely impacting hundreds of schools across the state. The state’s education system is already grappling with a teacher shortage, and the latest ruling has worsened the situation, leaving many schools struggling to maintain basic operations.

One such institution is Binodini High School Girls’ School in Chinchura, Hooghly, which is currently in a state of crisis. With a student body of about 1,150, the school is already operating with a reduced staff, after the layoff of three teachers and several non-teaching staff members. The headmistress, Moumita Pal, explained that the remaining teachers are now shouldering both administrative and teaching duties, in addition to their regular responsibilities. She noted that the school, which has three departments for grades five to ten, requires at least 22 teachers to run effectively. Currently, the school has just 31 teachers, but the shortage of subject-specific teachers—particularly in English, Mathematics, and Chemistry—has created additional pressure.

Other schools in the state, including Sailaja Memorial Girls’ High School in Lalgola, Murshidabad, are also facing severe staffing shortages. Headmistress Kakoli Chowdhury expressed concern over the employment of 18 teachers being canceled, leaving her school of 4,000 students without adequate faculty for essential subjects such as Biology, Physics, and Chemistry. With unit tests underway, she questioned how the school would continue to conduct examinations and maintain academic standards.

This crisis extends beyond a few schools. In other regions like Bhagabangola and Farakka, the impact of the Supreme Court’s order has been widespread. At Orahar Girls’ High School, eight out of 19 teachers have lost their jobs, and headmistress Najmun Nahar fears the school may struggle to operate once the official notifications are issued. Sekhalipur High School in Lalgola has also been hit hard, with the loss of teachers in crucial subjects like Geography and Physics. Headmaster Sahin Saraf noted that teachers at his school are vital not just for academics but also for implementing various government schemes, such as Kanyashree.

At Arjunpur High School in the Farakka block, the situation is even more dire, with 36 out of 70 teachers set to lose their positions. Faruk Abdullah, a teacher at the school, emphasized that the school has not been able to recruit new staff since 2018 and expressed concerns about the long-term viability of the school’s operations.

Despite the Supreme Court’s order for fresh examinations and a new recruitment process, many schools are uncertain whether they will receive the necessary support in time. The lack of clarity regarding the official notification and the potential delays in recruitment raise further concerns about how schools will manage in the interim, leaving students’ education hanging in the balance.

The situation underscores the urgent need for timely and effective solutions to prevent further disruptions in the education system. As schools across West Bengal face mounting challenges, it remains to be seen how the government will address the crisis and restore stability to the state’s educational institutions.

Dr. Chandrachud Goswami Offers Free Voluntary Classes to Support Education Amid Teacher Layoffs in West Bengal

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, April 8,  2025, Kolkata :  In the wake of the recent Supreme Court verdict on corruption in employment, which led to the dismissal of around twenty-six thousand teachers in West Bengal, the education sector has been thrown into disarray. The unexpected job losses have resulted in a shortage of teachers in several schools, creating concerns about potential disruptions to students’ studies. In response to this crisis, Dr. Chandrachud Goswami, the State President of the Hindu Mahasabha, has stepped forward with a selfless offer to volunteer as a teacher.

Dr. Goswami has expressed his willingness to take classes in government schools and online, completely free of charge, in order to ensure that students’ education is not hindered. He announced that he is available to teach all subjects up to the Madhyamik level, as well as biological science subjects for higher secondary and beyond, for two hours every day. His initiative aims to fill the gap created by the sudden reduction in the number of teachers, and he has called on the media to help connect students and their guardians to this opportunity, providing his contact details for those interested.

In a statement, Dr. Goswami emphasized the importance of merit in securing teaching positions. He expressed his belief that qualified individuals should not lose their jobs, as they earned their positions through hard work and merit. However, he also strongly advocated against allowing incompetent individuals to hold teaching jobs, particularly when such appointments are made through dishonest means, as this would jeopardize the future of students.

While the political landscape in the state remains tense following the Supreme Court ruling, Dr. Goswami’s offer stands out as an example of compassion and dedication to education. He has chosen to rise above the political turmoil and focus on the well-being of students, providing a humane and practical solution to a growing problem in the state’s educational system.

Surge in Demand for Raja Jute Seeds Amid High Yield and Profitability for Farmers in West Bengal

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, Kolkata, April 8, 2025: Farmers across jute-growing regions in West Bengal are increasingly turning to Raja jute, with the growing awareness of its superior benefits driving demand for the ‘Raja NJ-7005’ variety. This surge in interest comes as farmers experience significant profitability, with reports indicating an additional ₹10,000 in earnings per acre for those cultivating this new variety.

The remarkable success of Raja jute has delighted Nuziveedu Seeds, the company behind the development of this high-yield variety. According to the company, the increased earnings are attributed to Raja jute’s ability to produce longer fibers and a consistent yield increase of at least 2 quintals per acre when compared to traditional varieties. Developed in 2020 by Dr. Mohammad Mosiur Rahman, the head scientist at Nuziveedu Seeds’ research division, Raja jute has rapidly transformed the landscape of jute farming in India.

Raja jute offers a combination of cost-effectiveness, higher yields, and better-quality fibers, making it an attractive choice for farmers. The plants grow two feet taller than other varieties, allowing for better yields and thicker bark, which enhances fiber quality. This increased quality and yield are also resulting in more favorable market prices for farmers, further boosting their earnings.

While jute fibers in India are typically shorter than those from Bangladesh, presenting challenges for industrial use, the NJ-7005 Raja jute variety is helping to address this issue by producing longer fibers, thereby meeting the demands of the industry more effectively.

This growing success story highlights the potential of Raja jute in reshaping the future of jute farming, contributing not only to farmers’ income but also to the broader agricultural economy of the region.

Disappointed Teacher Joins Protest Demanding Mamata Banerjee’s Resignation After Losing Job

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, April  7,  2025, Kolkata :  Tensions continued to rise in West Bengal as the ongoing sit-in protest, organized by the Jalpaiguri District Congress and Sadar Block Congress Committee, gathered momentum. The protest, which took place at the District School Inspectorate office premises, was fueled by growing demands for the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Among the protesters were teachers who had recently lost their jobs, adding personal testimonies of disillusionment to the movement.

One such teacher, Dev Priya Saha, who lost his job under controversial circumstances, expressed his frustration and disappointment. Speaking about his decision not to attend the recent meeting of unemployed teachers in Kolkata, Saha said, “I can no longer trust the Chief Minister.” He further explained that Mamata Banerjee had made promises before, but those promises had not been fulfilled, particularly regarding the decision of the Calcutta High Court. The court had ordered the separation of qualified and incompetent teachers, but Saha alleged that the government had instead combined both groups, which led to the Supreme Court’s decision to terminate the jobs of many teachers, including himself.

Saha, who had worked as a teacher, reflected on the dire situation he now faces. “If the government stops the schools today, it will be difficult for people like us to survive. My wife and I have lost our jobs,” he lamented, emphasizing the personal hardship caused by the government’s actions.

The ongoing protests are likely to intensify as more affected individuals, particularly teachers, join the movement. With the demand for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s resignation growing louder, it remains to be seen how the state government will respond to the mounting public discontent.

Mamata Banerjee Assures Jobs for Deserving, Sparks Debate on Supreme Court Verdict

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, April  7,  2025, Kolkata : West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has made a significant promise to address the issue of unemployment in the state, assuring that jobs will be provided for those who are “deserving” while maintaining adherence to the law. The statement, however, comes amidst a growing controversy following a Supreme Court verdict, creating a clear divide between the judiciary’s stance and the Chief Minister’s approach.

In a meeting held at Netaji Indoor Stadium with unemployed individuals, Mamata Banerjee assured that the government would take responsibility for providing employment opportunities within two months. She emphasized that the state would act in accordance with the law and noted that no reservations would be made, but efforts would be focused on ensuring jobs for eligible candidates. “It is the responsibility of the government to ensure jobs for those who are deserving,” she declared, adding that alternative arrangements would be made within a two-month timeline.

However, Mamata’s statement has raised concerns over its implications, especially in the wake of a Supreme Court ruling. The court has directed the state to provide a list of eligible and ineligible candidates, which has yet to be finalized. The Chief Minister stressed that unless the list is provided by the court, the verdict cannot be reconsidered, and a situation could arise that leads to “civil war” in Bengal if the list of ineligible candidates is released.

Mamata also advised unemployed teachers to consider working voluntarily, suggesting that those who have not received dismissal notices should continue contributing without formal recognition. Despite her assurances, the Chief Minister emphasized that no eligible individual would lose their job, urging the Supreme Court to provide the state with the lists of eligible and ineligible candidates for clarity and fairness.

“The Supreme Court should explain its decision. No one has the right to dismantle the education system,” Mamata remarked, expressing her concerns over the potential disruption to the state’s educational framework. She also hinted at past instances where additional posts were approved by the cabinet, although she acknowledged these decisions were controversial and legally questionable.

The situation remains tense, with many waiting to see how the state will navigate this issue in the coming months. Mamata Banerjee’s bold stance has sparked debates across the political landscape, and the outcome of these promises will likely shape the government’s future course of action. Only time will tell if the Chief Minister’s assurances will be realized or if further legal complications will arise.

Tensions Erupt in Bengal Assembly Over Flag Incident, Shuvendu Adhikari Leads Heated Confrontation

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, April  7,  2025, Kolkata : A heated confrontation unfolded within the premises of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly after a BJP MLA’s personal assistant was prevented from entering with a motorcycle bearing a flag inscribed with the slogan “Jai Shri Ram.” The incident sparked outrage among BJP leaders, particularly Opposition Leader Shuvendu Adhikari, who led a charged demonstration in the Assembly complex.

According to reports, the situation escalated when the personal assistant of BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh was halted at the Assembly gate by security personnel, who insisted that the “Jai Shri Ram” flag be removed from his motorcycle before entry. The security staff cited the reason that it was still the day of Dashami, and Ram Navami had already passed. Enraged by the incident, Shuvendu Adhikari and several BJP MLAs gathered, chanting “Jai Shri Ram” as they entered the Assembly in search of the person responsible for the action.

Adhikari, visibly upset, confronted journalists, claiming that the act of blocking entry based on the flag was an affront to the BJP and to Hindu sentiments. He declared, “I will not tolerate or accept insults to Jai Shri Ram,” adding that such behavior was unacceptable in India, which he insisted was not a place like Pakistan. Holding up the flag in question, he criticized the state government under Mamata Banerjee’s leadership, accusing it of catering to what he termed the “Muslim League” government. The tension intensified as Adhikari stated, “We are Hindu children, and we will not be silenced.”

The situation grew even more volatile when Shankar Ghosh arrived at the scene and, upon hearing the details of the incident, expressed his fury, telling security personnel, “I will definitely throw them out.” Meanwhile, BJP MLAs gathered outside the Assembly chanting slogans, further escalating the confrontation.

Though Adhikari mentioned learning the name of the accused worker, he chose not to make it public. The incident sparked significant excitement and controversy within the Assembly, drawing attention to the growing tensions in the political landscape of West Bengal. The situation remains unresolved, with both parties exchanging sharp words over the incident and its implications for communal and political relations in the state.

World Autism Awareness Day Observed with Special Awareness Camp in Uttarpara

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, April 3, 2025, Kolkata: World Autism Awareness Day, observed annually on April 2nd, was marked this year with a special awareness camp in Uttarpara, Hooghly district, aimed at educating parents and dispelling misconceptions about autism. The event brought together distinguished professionals, parents, and community members, all united in the mission to foster a deeper understanding of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and promote early intervention.

Dr. Md. Sahidul Arefin, a renowned Speech-Language Pathologist, addressed the gathering, emphasizing that autism is not a disease but rather a unique way of perceiving the world. “Autism is simply a different way of experiencing life. However, without timely intervention, these differences can create challenges in communication and social interaction,” he explained.

Dr. Arefin also shed light on the emotional struggles faced by parents of autistic children, who often endure discouraging remarks from society. “Many parents approach us in distress, having been told that their child will never learn or communicate. But modern research has proven otherwise. With effective therapies and the right support, children on the autism spectrum can thrive. It is crucial to break free from superstitions and seek professional help,” he urged.

Highlighting the importance of early intervention, he stated that autism, when identified between the ages of 3 to 5, can be managed effectively through consistent speech therapy. “The brain’s neuroplasticity is at its peak during early childhood. Many non-verbal children start speaking meaningfully within months of therapy. Delays in intervention result in missed opportunities for improvement,” he said.

Organizer Tarun Dasgupta underscored the necessity of inclusive education, advocating for autism-friendly schools, reduced screen time for young children, specialized training for Anganwadi workers, and increased accessibility to therapy services, particularly for rural and low-income families.

The awareness camp served as a crucial platform for empowering parents with knowledge, resources, and hope, reinforcing the message that autism is not a barrier to success but a different way of learning and growing.

SC annuls appointment of 25,753 teachers, staffers in WB schools : ‘Entire selection process tainted’

PTI, NEW DELHI, KOLKATA, APRIL 3, 2025 : In a major blow to the West Bengal government, the Supreme Court on Thursday invalidated the appointment of 25,753 teachers and staffers in the state-run and aided schools, calling the entire selection process “vitiated and tainted”. A bench comprising Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar upheld a Calcutta High Court verdict of April 22, 2024, annulling the appointments and said the tainted candidates should refund their “salaries/payments received”.

“This is a case wherein the entire selection process has been vitiated and tainted beyond resolution. Manipulations and frauds on a large scale, coupled with the attempted cover-up, have dented the selection process beyond repair and partial redemption. The credibility and legitimacy of the selection are denuded,” said the 41-page judgement authored by the CJI.

The verdict went on, “We find no valid ground or reason to interfere with the direction of the high court that the services of tainted candidates, where appointed, must be terminated, and they should be required to refund any salaries/payments received. Since their appointments were the result of fraud, this amounts to cheating. Therefore, we see no justification to alter this direction.”

For candidates who were untainted, it said the selection process was rightly declared null and void due to the “egregious violations and illegalities” as it violated Articles 14 (equality before the law) and 16 (equality of opportunity in matters of public employment) of the Constitution.

“As such, the appointments of these candidates are cancelled. However, candidates who are already employed need not be asked to refund or reinstitute any payments made to them. However, their services will be terminated. Furthermore, no candidate can be appointed once the entire examination process and results have been declared void,” it held.

The top court gave relief to such employees who were not in the category of tainted candidates and had previously worked in other state departments or with autonomous bodies.

“In such cases, although their appointments are cancelled, these candidates will have the right to apply to their previous departments or autonomous bodies to continue in service with those entities,” it said. The bench directed the state government to process their job pleas in three months. “Further, the period between the termination of their previous appointment and their rejoining will not be considered a break in service. Their seniority and other entitlements will be preserved, and they will be eligible for increments,” it added.

However, for the period such persons were employed under the disputed appointment, no wages would be paid by the state or autonomous bodies, it said. “Further, if required and necessary, supernumerary posts may be created for persons appointed in the interregnum,” the court said.

Addressing the issue of disabled candidates, the bench noted the high court held one Soma Das to continue on humanitarian grounds. “While we will not interfere with this finding, we make it clear that other differently-abled candidates will not be entitled to the same benefit, as it would contradict legal principles and the rule of law. However, in consideration of their disability, these candidates will be permitted to continue and will receive wages until the fresh selection process and appointments are completed,” it said.

The disabled candidates, the court said, would be allowed to participate in the fresh selection process, if required, with age relaxation and other concessions. “Similarly, other candidates who are not specifically tainted will also be eligible to participate, with appropriate age relaxation. In our opinion, such a direction would be fair and just, as it would allow these candidates to take part in the fresh selection process, which should now be initiated to fill the vacancies,” the bench said.

The court, however, did not specify a time limit for the fresh selection process.

The top court said its observations and findings wouldn’t influence the ongoing criminal proceedings. “Accordingly, we uphold the impugned judgment cancelling the en bloc/entire selection process but have made certain modifications in the directions issued by the high court,” it held. The bench said it would independently take up the issue raised by the state government on the CBI investigation.

Citing irregularities such as OMR sheet tampering and rank-jumping, the high court had invalidated the appointment of 25,753 teachers and non-teaching staff in state-run and state-aided schools in West Bengal. The case stemmed from the alleged irregularities in the 2016 recruitment process conducted by the West Bengal SSC in which 23 lakh candidates appeared for 24,640 posts and a total of 25,753 appointment letters were issued. The apex court had called it a “systemic fraud”.

Former West Bengal education minister Partha Chatterjee and Trinamool Congress MLAs Manik Bhattacharya and Jiban Krishna Saha are among the accused being probed in the recruitment scam.

However, later in the day, at a media meet at Nabanna, the state’s administrative headquarters, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said she respected the judiciary but disagreed with the Supreme Court’s verdict on school appointments “on humanitarian grounds” and dared the BJP that she was ready to be arrested for supporting the affected candidates. While accusing the BJP and the CPI(M) of “hatching a conspiracy and influencing the verdict”, Banerjee emphasised that while her government would abide by the top court ruling, it would explore all possible legal options.

“I have the utmost respect for the judiciary and judges, but from a humanitarian perspective, I cannot accept this judgment. As a citizen of this country, I have every right to express my opinion. While I respect the judge and the judiciary, I do not agree with the verdict,” Banerjee said at a press conference at the state secretariat.

“How can a single person’s crime lead to punishment for all?” Banerjee said. She also took a defiant stance against the BJP’s criticism of her support for the dismissed teachers. “Our lawyers will review this matter. If the BJP wants to send me to jail for supporting them, they can. Catch me if you want to,” she declared.

Referring to the alleged recovery of a large amount of cash from a judge’s residence in New Delhi, she questioned why such cases are treated differently when money is found at a judge’s home. She alleged that the verdict was “influenced by a conspiracy between the BJP and the CPI(M)”. Banerjee highlighted that the ruling had impacted not just the candidates but also their families. “It’s not just 25,000 candidates; their families are affected too. Why should so many people be punished for a few?” she questioned.

Accusing the BJP of deliberately targeting Bengal, Banerjee asked whether being born in the state was a crime. She raised concerns over the impact of the verdict on the education system. “Over 11,000 of the affected teachers taught in Class 9 and 10, and more than 5,500 in Class 11 and 12. These are crucial years, the gateway to higher education. Many of them are correcting answer sheets of board exams. Do BJP and CPI(M) want the education system to collapse?” she asked.

The chief minister reiterated that her government would follow the court’s ruling but explore all legal avenues. “We have to accept the judgment and do whatever is legally possible,” she said.

Banerjee clarified that the School Service Commission (SSC) is an autonomous body and that the state government would not interfere in its decisions. “The SSC is an autonomous body. We, as the state government, will not interfere in their work. We will abide by the court’s verdict,” she asserted. Banerjee said she, along with state education minister Bratya Basu, would meet the candidates on April 7 at Netaji Indoor Stadium.

Bigger Veterinary Hospital to Soon Rise in New Town, Kolkata

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, March 31 2025, Kolkata : As the demand for better pet healthcare services grows alongside the increasing number of pets in Bengal, the North 24 Parganas administration has announced an ambitious initiative to address the gap in modern veterinary facilities. Recognizing the growing needs of pet owners, the New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) has plans to construct a larger, more equipped veterinary hospital in New Town, with construction set to begin soon.

The existing veterinary hospital, established by NKDA in New Town six years ago, has been instrumental in providing regular treatment and care for pets. However, residents have consistently voiced the need for a more comprehensive facility that can cater to a wider range of veterinary services. Pet owners expressed their dissatisfaction with the current infrastructure, highlighting limited services and the lack of specialized care. While private clinics offer veterinary services, the steep treatment costs have made them inaccessible for many.

“Although we can afford basic food and medicine for our pets, finding a reliable pet clinic with qualified doctors is a challenge in this area,” said a local pet owner. The only affordable or free veterinary treatment currently available is at the Belgachia Animal Hospital, which often faces overwhelming demand.

In addition to the new veterinary hospital, NKDA had previously launched a pet clinic and crèche in New Town in 2019. Located behind Shankar Nethralaya near Tata Cancer Hospital, this facility has been offering outdoor pet treatment services, providing some relief to pet owners in the region.

With the upcoming veterinary hospital, the authorities aim to ensure that pet owners in New Town and surrounding areas receive the quality healthcare their beloved animals deserve.

Kolkata Police to Implement AI-Powered CCTV for Enhanced Security and Crime Prevention

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, March 30, 2025, Kolkata :  Kolkata Police is set to introduce a cutting-edge initiative that incorporates artificial intelligence (AI) into the city’s security system, signaling a major advancement in urban policing. Over the past few years, the police force has increasingly embraced new technologies to combat crime, and this latest move is poised to redefine the city’s security infrastructure.

The AI-powered CCTV cameras are designed to go beyond traditional surveillance methods. These cameras will be equipped with motion detectors and an advanced alarm system that will immediately alert the police control room if unusual activity is detected. For example, if an unusually high volume of people or vehicles is observed on a particular road, the system will flag it for immediate attention. Similarly, at night, when public activity typically diminishes, any abnormal presence or activity will be flagged, enabling rapid response by law enforcement.

This technological leap is especially significant for enhancing safety, particularly for women. With the rise in crimes against women in some areas of Kolkata, the new AI-enabled CCTV system promises to provide real-time tracking of potential offenders, allowing police to respond quickly to incidents and preventing criminals from operating unnoticed in isolated areas. By integrating police patrols with the real-time monitoring of these AI-enhanced cameras, the system will be a powerful deterrent against crime.

In addition to detecting unusual movements, the cameras are capable of identifying when their lenses are obstructed or tampered with. In such instances, the AI will instantly notify the control room, allowing for swift intervention to stop malicious activities. Moreover, even in the event of technical issues, such as IP address conflicts or network disruptions, the AI system will flag the problem, ensuring that police are always aware of any potential disruptions.

Beyond improving crime prevention, the AI CCTV cameras will also play a crucial role in responding to accidents, traffic issues, or emergencies. Footage captured by the cameras will be securely recorded, ensuring that even if real-time data is lost, recorded footage can still be accessed for investigative purposes.

The initiative, initially rolled out in Kolkata, is expected to expand to other cities and districts in West Bengal. The interconnected nature of the CCTV system will enable coordinated responses across different police jurisdictions, enhancing the state’s overall crime-fighting capabilities. This interconnected system will make the police more modern, efficient, and responsive, ultimately improving safety for all residents of Kolkata and beyond.

With the AI-powered CCTV system, Kolkata’s police force is taking a bold step toward utilizing technology to maintain public safety and ensure swift and effective law enforcement across the city. The integration of this system represents a significant leap forward in the modernization of the state’s security infrastructure, setting a new benchmark for urban policing.

Tensions Escalate in West Bengal Over Ram Navami Celebrations Amid Political Rivalry

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, March 30, 2025, Kolkata :  The ongoing political tension and debates surrounding law and order in West Bengal, particularly concerning Ram Navami celebrations, have reached a critical juncture. Municipal Minister Firhad Hakim recently warned that a small group of individuals from other states could incite unrest in the state on Ram Navami. However, he expressed confidence that if such individuals are identified early, there would be no issue. Firhad emphasized that both he and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee remain vigilant during the festival, staying up at night each year to ensure the peace is maintained.

In the meantime, opposition figures, including Leader of the Opposition Shuvendu Adhikari and BJP leader Dilip Ghosh, have adopted a sharp tone as Ram Navami approaches. Both leaders have issued stern warnings against the participation of armed processions and public gatherings during the festivities. Through their remarks, the BJP appears to be leveraging the occasion to strengthen its political narrative, rallying support around the principles of Hindutva as it prepares for the upcoming elections in the state. The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), in alignment with BJP’s agenda, has instructed its workers to bolster the show of force during the Ram Navami processions.

Responding to the rising political and religious tensions, Firhad Hakim stood firm in his belief that “communal politics will not work in Bengal,” emphasizing that the state remains committed to the secular values espoused by figures like Ramakrishna. Hakim also criticized Union Minister Amit Shah’s attempts to cultivate support for the BJP in the state, saying that religious politics would not succeed in West Bengal.

Meanwhile, the RSS has refrained from directly intervening in the law and order matters surrounding the Ram Navami celebrations, deferring to the police administration. Dr. Jishnu Basu, the RSS’s Eastern Field Co-Promotion Officer, expressed the organization’s acceptance of the police’s decision on how to handle the procession, highlighting that different regions have diverse religious practices, and the law and order situation must be managed by the local authorities.

As tensions rise, West Bengal’s political landscape becomes increasingly polarized, with both major parties vying for influence. The key challenge moving forward will be maintaining peace and communal harmony as political factions continue to assert their positions in the lead-up to the next elections.

Powerful quake rocks Myanmar, Thailand; at least 144 die

PTI, BANGKOK/NEW DELHI, MARCH 28, 2025 : A powerful earthquake rocked Myanmar and neighboring Thailand on Friday, destroying buildings, a bridge, and a dam. At least 144 people were killed and 730 injured in Myanmar, where photos and videos from two hard-hit cities showed extensive damage.

The 7.7-magnitude quake, with an epicenter near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, struck at midday and was followed by a strong 6.4-magnitude aftershock. The full extent of death, injury, and destruction was not immediately clear—particularly in Myanmar, one of the world’s poorest countries, which is also embroiled in a civil war and has tightly controlled information.

The head of Myanmar’s military government, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, said in a televised speech on Friday evening that at least 144 people were killed and 730 others injured, warning that the toll could rise.

Photos from the capital Naypyidaw showed multiple buildings used to house civil servants destroyed by the quake, with rescue crews pulling victims from the rubble. Myanmar’s government said blood donations were in high demand in the hardest-hit areas.

Images of buckled roads in Mandalay, damaged highways, and the collapse of a bridge and a dam raised further concerns about how rescuers would reach affected areas in a country already enduring a humanitarian crisis.

India’s Response

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep concern over the devastation in Myanmar and Thailand. He assured that India stands ready to offer all possible assistance to both countries.

“Concerned by the situation in the wake of the earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand. Praying for the safety and well-being of everyone,” Modi posted on X.

The Prime Minister is scheduled to attend the BIMSTEC regional summit in Bangkok next week, where discussions on disaster relief may be included. He further stated, “India stands ready to offer all possible assistance. In this regard, I have asked our authorities to be on standby and also directed the MEA to remain in touch with the Governments of Myanmar and Thailand.”

Thailand’s Response

Thailand’s Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has called an emergency meeting to assess the impact of the quake.

BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) comprises India, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal, and Bhutan.

Jadavpur University’s Acting Vice-Chancellor Removed Early Amid Rising Uncertainty

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, March 26, 2025, Kolkata : In a surprising move, Raj Bhavan has removed Professor Bhaskar Gupta from his role as the acting Vice-Chancellor of Jadavpur University ahead of the end of his tenure. Despite his term as a professor running until March 31, a notification issued on March 27 confirmed that he would no longer serve as Vice-Chancellor. The decision, taken with the approval of the university’s Chancellor and Governor C.V. Anand Bose, has sparked widespread discussion.

The official notification from Raj Bhavan stated, “The responsibility given to Professor Bhaskar Gupta as the acting Vice-Chancellor of Jadavpur University on April 20, 2024, is being withdrawn. This will take effect immediately.” A formal instruction has also been sent to the university’s registrar to ensure smooth communication of the decision.

In response, Professor Gupta addressed the situation, clarifying that he took over the position on April 22, 2024, and was removed four days ago. He confirmed that he would remain a professor in the Electronics and Telecommunications Department until March 31, reflecting on his efforts to contribute to the development of the university during his brief tenure as Vice-Chancellor.

The abrupt removal of Gupta has raised questions about the political and administrative motives behind the decision. Some have suggested that the sudden leadership change may trigger further instability within the university. Currently, Jadavpur University is left without a Vice-Chancellor, leading to concerns about its future direction.

This development comes amid a broader issue of vice-chancellor appointments across West Bengal. The state has already seen permanent vice-chancellors appointed to 19 of its 36 universities following a Supreme Court order. However, 16 universities, including Jadavpur, remain without permanent leadership, fueling ongoing debates about governance and the appointment process.

With the uncertainty surrounding Gupta’s replacement, many are anxious about the potential disruption to the university’s administrative operations. The delay in appointing a new Vice-Chancellor has sparked further concern, particularly in light of the strained relationship between the state government and Raj Bhavan.

State Education Minister Bratya Basu strongly criticized the situation, drawing parallels between the deadlock at Jadavpur and previous delays in appointing Vice-Chancellors at Rabindra Bharati and Calcutta Universities. He stated, “One person could have been appointed as the permanent Vice-Chancellor from the list provided by the Chief Minister, but the Governor’s decision has instead resulted in yet another deadlock.”

With no detailed explanation from Raj Bhavan regarding the issue, the question remains: when will Jadavpur University have a new Vice-Chancellor? Many worry that the ongoing uncertainty will only exacerbate administrative challenges at the university, and a portion of students fears that prolonged delays could lead to further complications. As tensions continue to rise, the future of the university’s leadership remains in flux.

Compassionate Police Officer Provides Shelter to Homeless Elderly Man in Chinsurah

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, March 26, 2025, Kolkata : In a heartfelt display of compassion, Constable Sukumar Upadhyay of the Chandannagar Police Commissionerate has once again extended his help to a homeless individual. Sixty-year-old Bimal Biswas, who had been struggling to survive on the streets of Chinsurah, has now found shelter at Nabajiban, a municipal facility for the homeless, thanks to the officer’s efforts. Overwhelmed with gratitude, the elderly man embraced the officer, tears streaming down his face—an emotional moment that also brought tears to Upadhyay’s eyes.

A former driver, Biswas had been living in a rented house in Hemanta Basu Colony but was forced into homelessness due to financial difficulties and his inability to work. For months, he took refuge outside a furniture shop in Chinsurah Chowk Bazar, where shopkeeper Laxminarayan Ghosh allowed him to sleep on the veranda with a blanket. However, he remained vulnerable, and after being attacked by an unidentified youth, he sought shelter at the local Kali temple.

Constable Upadhyay, known for his dedication to helping the homeless and those abandoned by their families, noticed Biswas lying outside the temple. Taking the initiative, he spoke to the elderly man and learned about his struggles. He then approached Chinsurah Municipality, secured permission, and personally arranged for Biswas to be accommodated at Nabajiban.

Upadhyay has a history of assisting those in need, from reuniting abandoned individuals with their families to supporting students in difficult circumstances. Reflecting on his commitment, he stated that helping others is a responsibility everyone should take on. “Even small efforts can make a big difference in people’s lives,” he said.

His compassionate gesture has been widely appreciated, highlighting the impact of kindness and community support in transforming lives.
