Hindu Mahasabha Stages Historic Rally in Kolkata Demanding Independent Balochistan

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, May 15, 2025, Kolkata :  In a bold display of solidarity with the people of Balochistan, the Hindu Mahasabha organized a protest rally and roadshow in Kolkata today, advocating for an independent Balochistan and condemning the ongoing atrocities committed by Pakistan against the region. The rally, led by State President Dr. Chandrachud Goswami, took place near Uttam Kumar Metro Station in Tollygunge and saw participation from about fifty members of the political organization.

Dr. Goswami, addressing the crowd, fiercely criticized Pakistan for its treatment of Balochistan, which he described as a Muslim-majority region under brutal occupation. “Although Pakistan talks about Muslim brotherhood, for many years they have been brutally abusing the Muslim-dominated country of Balochistan. They are destroying the dignity of their women,” he stated. The leader also pointed out that Balochistan is critical to Pakistan’s economy, stating, “Dishonest Pakistan should remember that ninety percent of their country’s economy is dependent on Balochistan.”

The Hindu Mahasabha’s support for Balochistan’s independence is not new. Dr. Goswami confirmed that the Mahasabha had reached out to the United Nations, the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, and the leader of Balochistan, Mir Yasir Baloch, urging them to take action for the cause of the Baloch people. “We stand by our Baloch brothers with the last drop of blood in our chest,” Goswami declared.

Other prominent leaders from the Hindu Mahasabha also took the stage, adding weight to the cause. Dr. Surath Chakraborty, a senior member, emphasized that the liberation of Balochistan is crucial to weakening Pakistan’s control over terrorists. “Only if Balochistan is liberated can Pakistani terrorists be suppressed militarily and economically,” Chakraborty argued. He further criticized the Pakistani state, which he said is now under the control of terrorists.

Pandit Subhash Singh Roy, another Mahasabha leader, underscored the historical and cultural ties between India and Balochistan. “Hindustani classical music has established a spiritual connection with Indian soil and our former state of Balochistan for ages,” Roy said. The protest also drew attention to religious sentiments, with Mahasabha Office Secretary Anamika Mandal highlighting the presence of the revered Sati Peeth of Marutirtha Hinglaj in Balochistan. “We Sanatanis must have been specially associated with Balochistan in terms of religious sentiments for many ages,” Mandal added.

Among the many speakers at the event, the words of State Committee members like Manoj Chatterjee, Seema Dutt, and Kajal Halder resonated deeply with the audience. Their speeches inspired widespread enthusiasm and participation.

The rally culminated with Dr. Goswami hoisting the flag of an independent Balochistan, accompanied by the national anthem of Balochistan, performed by the cultural team of the Mahasabha, including Soma De, Lipa Pal, Debangshu Dutta, and Debasrita Dutta.

In a symbolic gesture of support, the participants of the historic roadshow expressed their solidarity for Balochistan and called on the United Nations and Indian leadership to recognize the demand for an independent Balochistan. The streets of Kolkata echoed with slogans of support for the Baloch people, marking a significant moment of political expression and international solidarity in the ongoing struggle for Balochistan’s independence.

Supreme Court Set to Hear Long-Pending DA Case of Bengal Government Employees on Friday

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, May 15, 2025,

Delhi: After years of delays and repeated adjournments, the dearness allowance (DA) case concerning West Bengal state government employees is finally set for a crucial hearing in the Supreme Court on Friday. The case, which holds immense importance for thousands of state employees, has been entangled in legal proceedings for over two years, despite employees securing favorable verdicts at every stage of the judicial process.

Originally sparked by disputes surrounding the recommendations of the Pay Commission, the matter progressed from the State Administrative Tribunal to the Calcutta High Court and eventually reached the Supreme Court. Throughout this legal journey, state government employees have consistently prevailed, bolstering hopes for a conclusive outcome.

The case’s trajectory in the Supreme Court has been particularly complex due to frequent changes in the composition of the bench. It was initially heard in 2022 by Justices Dinesh Maheshwari and Hrishikesh Roy. The last hearing took place on April 28, 2023, under Justices Maheshwari and Sanjay Kumar. However, with the subsequent retirement of Justices Maheshwari and Roy, the case faced further delays and uncertainty.

Despite yet another adjournment on Wednesday, optimism surged following confirmation from Advocate Vikas Ranjan Bhattacharya that the matter is now scheduled for a final hearing this Friday. Speaking to reporters, Bhattacharya said, “The DA case was scheduled at 2 p.m. today. We were all present, but due to some special reasons, the court could not take it up. On our request, the hearing has been rescheduled to Friday. This time, the case will not be adjourned. We expect the final hearing to take place.”

As anticipation builds, government employees across the state are hopeful that the verdict—if delivered this week—will finally bring closure to a case that has long affected their financial entitlements.

Arjun Singh Calls Migrant Bengali Voters ‘Game Changers’ in Bengal, Bihar Elections

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, May 15, 2025, Kolkata :  In the run-up to crucial elections in Bihar later this year and West Bengal in 2026, BJP leader and former MP Arjun Singh has stirred the political pot with a strong appeal aimed at mobilizing Bengali voters living outside the state. Speaking alongside Union Minister of State Satish Chandra Dubey, Singh claimed that voters from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar—especially Bengalis who have migrated for work—could significantly influence the outcome of the West Bengal Assembly elections.

Addressing party workers and supporters, Singh urged that steps be taken to ensure that Bengalis residing in Bihar and other states return to Bengal to cast their votes during the upcoming state elections. In return, he suggested that those who are voters in Bihar but currently living in Bengal should go back to vote in their home constituencies during the Bihar elections. “All these Bengalis should be sent to Bengal to vote. And those who are voters in Bihar, they will go from Bengal and vote in Bihar. If this can be done, then BJP is sure to win in both states,” Singh asserted.

The former MP described these migrant voters as “game changers” and emphasized the need for their mobilization to secure a favorable outcome for the Bharatiya Janata Party in both states. He appealed directly to Union Minister Satish Chandra Dubey to coordinate efforts in this regard. Singh’s remarks align with previous statements made by BJP leader Shuvendu Adhikari, who has consistently advocated for strong outreach efforts and emphasized religious identity in political strategy.

Stressing the need for action beyond rhetoric, Singh urged party workers to take to the ground rather than rely solely on speeches and public addresses. Drawing a parallel with national defense, he stated, “The BJP’s defense system should be strengthened. Just as the Prime Minister strengthened the defense system and taught Pakistan a lesson in three hours by sitting in India, similarly the BJP’s defense system should be strengthened.”

His comments reflect a broader strategy by the BJP to consolidate support across state borders and tap into the influence of migrant voters, positioning them as a critical element in the upcoming electoral battles in both Bihar and West Bengal.

West Bengal Tops in Small Industries, Announces New Industrial and Marketing Infrastructure Plans

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, May 15, 2025, Kolkata :
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced significant developments in the state’s industrial landscape, highlighting the state’s top position in the country for small-scale industries. Speaking from Kolkata, she stated that 140 lakh individuals are currently employed in 90 lakh small industrial units across the state. The Chief Minister emphasized the state’s leadership in the sector, noting that 660 industrial clusters already exist, and more are in demand. She underlined the state’s methodical approach to approving new units by ensuring proper land verification and multi-level clearances before granting permissions.

In a major move aimed at supporting small entrepreneurs and self-help groups, the Chief Minister unveiled a plan to construct 23 shopping complexes across the 23 districts of West Bengal. These hubs are intended to promote local products and facilitate better market access. Each complex will be constructed by private entities on one acre of land provided free of cost by the state government. In return, two floors in each complex will be reserved exclusively for self-help groups, also at no cost. Land clearances for these projects have already been granted in 11 districts, including Purulia, Darjeeling, Bankura, Cooch Behar, Howrah, Jalpaiguri, Jhargram, Murshidabad, West Midnapore, and Uttar Dinajpur. The process for clearance in the remaining 12 districts is underway.

The Chief Minister also announced the allocation of 10 industrial plots to prominent companies in key locations including Raghunathpur (Purulia), Mankar (Durgapur), and Panagarh (Burdwan). These plots, covering a total of 2,515 acres, are expected to attract investments worth approximately ₹25,000 crore. She projected that the resulting projects—many in the steel sector—will create over 70,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities.

Furthermore, the state government has expanded its support for micro and small enterprises, allocating land to 43 such units across 15 industrial estates following a recent cabinet decision. These units will be distributed across various districts, contributing to decentralized industrial growth. According to the Chief Minister, “All these will be in different districts. In this case, there will be an investment of hundreds of crores of taka and employment will be created in every district.

Mamata Banerjee Announces New Industrial Zones and Livelihood Security for Workers in West Bengal

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, Kolkata, May 14, 2025 : In a major move to bolster industrialization and provide greater employment opportunities, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday announced the identification of new industrial zones across West Bengal. This initiative comes as part of the state government’s ongoing efforts to attract investments and stimulate economic growth, especially following the successful World Bengal Trade Conference.

Speaking from the state secretariat, Nabanna, the Chief Minister highlighted that ten plots of land have been earmarked in Raghunathpur, Purulia, and additional sites in Panagarh, Durgapur, and Howrah. These locations are set to become hubs of industrial activity as the state seeks to encourage both domestic and foreign investments. “Rapid industrialization is our goal,” said Banerjee, underscoring that the development of these industrial zones will play a key role in transforming the state’s economy.

The Chief Minister also addressed concerns raised by the opposition regarding the state’s industrial and employment potential. While investments have been flowing into West Bengal, with several foreign deals already secured, opposition leaders have frequently questioned whether the state is doing enough to create industrial jobs. Banerjee’s latest announcement aims to dispel these concerns by showcasing the government’s proactive approach in creating industrial zones that will serve as a catalyst for future job creation.

In addition to the industrial developments, Banerjee introduced a new initiative aimed at providing financial support to Group C and Group D workers in the state. Beginning April 1, 2025, the West Bengal Livelihood Social Security Scheme will provide monthly stipends of Rs 25,000 for Group C employees and Rs 20,000 for Group D employees. The scheme, administered by the state’s Labor Department, is designed to offer a safety net for workers while also boosting the state’s commitment to improving living standards and social security.

The announcement of the new industrial zones, combined with the livelihood security scheme, underscores the state government’s commitment to both industrial growth and the welfare of its workforce. As Mamata Banerjee emphasized, the state’s focus on industrialization and job creation aims to elevate West Bengal’s position in India’s broader economic landscape. The move is expected to attract more investments, provide employment opportunities, and support local industries.

These efforts reflect a broader vision for the future of West Bengal as the state aims to balance industrial development with the welfare of its people. The upcoming industrial zones are expected to create thousands of new jobs, further driving economic growth and providing much-needed support to workers in the region.

India Rejects Trump’s Claim of Mediation in Ceasefire, Slams Unfounded Allegations

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, Delhi, May 14, 2025 : Tensions flared as the Indian government responded sharply to former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent statements regarding the India-Pakistan ceasefire. Trump had claimed that both India and Pakistan had agreed to halt hostilities due to American pressure, suggesting his direct involvement in bringing about the ceasefire. India, however, has expressed strong disapproval of these remarks, clarifying that the ceasefire was not influenced by external intervention.

On Tuesday, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a formal response, vehemently denying any suggestion that the United States played a role in the ceasefire agreement. The MEA made it clear that the decision was a result of India’s own strategic interests and diplomatic discussions, not any foreign pressure. External Affairs Secretary Randhir Jaiswal addressed a press conference in which he explained that while there had been ongoing talks between Indian and American leaders, they had nothing to do with trade or the Kashmir issue.

The controversy began after Trump’s remarks last weekend, where he claimed credit for brokering the ceasefire, stating, “After a long night of talks, both countries have agreed to a complete ceasefire from this moment. Congratulations to both sides for using realism at the right time.” Trump went on to assert, “We pressured the two nuclear powers to cease hostilities. I warned them not to stop the war, not to stop trade either. That worked. I stopped the India-Pakistan war.”

In response, India made it clear that while discussions with the U.S. leadership were held throughout the course of Operation Vermilion, which began on May 7, no pressure was applied regarding the ceasefire. The Foreign Secretary categorically stated that the situation on the ground and the evolving military dynamics were the primary focus of the talks, with no mention of any trade-related conditions or mediatory efforts by the U.S.

Furthermore, the Indian government reaffirmed its longstanding position on the Kashmir issue, emphasizing that it remains a bilateral matter between India and Pakistan, with no room for external mediation. “Kashmir was, is, and will remain a bilateral issue between India and Pakistan,” Jaiswal reiterated, making it clear that India would not entertain any attempts to internationalize the dispute.

The Indian government’s firm stance highlights its commitment to maintaining sovereignty and safeguarding its national interests. While diplomatic channels between India and the U.S. remain active, the statement sent a clear message that India’s foreign policy will not be shaped by external pressures, particularly when it comes to matters of national security and territorial integrity.

As the situation continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how these diplomatic exchanges will impact future relations between the two countries, but one thing is certain: India’s leadership is resolute in its position on the ceasefire and the Kashmir issue.

A True Patriot: The Heroic Journey of Panchkari Banerjee, A Veteran of Two Indo-Pak Wars

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, May 14, 2025, Kolkata :  Over 85 years old now, Panchkari Banerjee defies age with the vigor and passion of a much younger man. His youthful energy and unwavering patriotism are evident to anyone who meets him, though his memories stretch back more than six decades to a time when he stood on the front lines of India’s wars against Pakistan.

Born and raised in Chayanpur village in Purulia Block No. 2, Panchkari’s journey into the Indian Army began when he was just 22 years old. Without informing his family, he traveled to Purulia city, determined to join the armed forces. His resolve led him to the army examination, which he passed with flying colors, ultimately enlisting on January 21, 1963.

After completing rigorous training at the Roorkee Training Center in Uttar Pradesh, his service took him to Jammu and Kashmir, and later to Srinagar and Ladakh. It was during the 1965 Indo-Pakistani War that Panchkari Banerjee found himself posted at Kaluch in the Sialkot sector, right on the border with Pakistan, where he bravely fought. His second engagement in the Indo-Pakistani conflict came in 1971, when he played a pivotal role in overseeing 1,600 prisoners of war at the Roorkee camp.

Now in his twilight years, Panchkari’s love for his country remains as strong as ever. Despite his age, the memories of those formative days on the battlefield continue to resonate in his mind. He remains deeply invested in the current geopolitical situation, frequently voicing his opinions on national defense and watching news reports closely. “India is giving Pakistan the response it deserves,” he says, a sentiment shaped by his firsthand experiences and the sacrifices of his youth.

In addition to his passion for national defense, Panchkari spends his days reading newspapers and writing poetry. His reflections often circle back to the ideals of patriotism and the spirit of sacrifice that continue to shape India’s resilience.

Panchkari Banerjee’s dedication to his country is a testament to the unwavering patriotism that has always fueled India’s defense. He may be far from the battlefield now, but his spirit remains undiminished. A salute to him is a salute to the countless heroes who have kept India’s flag flying high against all odds.

Baidyabati Declared India’s First Bird-Friendly and Community City on World Migratory Bird Day 2025

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, May 13, 2025, Kolkata : On the occasion of World Migratory Bird Day 2025, Baidyabati, a city in the Hooghly district of West Bengal, was officially declared India’s first bird-friendly and community city, meeting the criteria set by the United Nations. The announcement was made during a press conference held at the Baidyabati Municipality Hall on Tuesday evening, organized by the Baidyabati Biodiversity Management Committee.

The event brought together a diverse group of participants, including poets, writers, environmentalists, and local officials, who shared reflections through poetry and discussions. Eminent personalities such as poet, author, and lawyer Ujjwal Chakraborty, Baidyabati BMC Chairman Dr. Sanjay Chandra Sen, Municipal Chief Pintu Mahato, and BMC Secretary Amit Dutt were among those in attendance.

In alignment with the announcement, Baidyabati BMC unveiled the “Baidyabati Aravan Green Plan,” an initiative aimed at fostering ecological harmony in the city. This will be implemented alongside the “Sabuj Shree” project, a green initiative inspired by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. These initiatives are part of a broader commitment to promote sustainable urban development that supports biodiversity, particularly migratory birds.

Baidyabati, situated on the banks of the Hooghly River, is known for its rich cultural heritage and vibrant celebrations, including the grand Durga Puja festival. Now, the city is adding ecological stewardship to its cultural identity by taking measurable steps to safeguard bird populations and their habitats.

World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD), celebrated globally in May and October, highlights the importance of protecting migratory birds and the ecosystems they depend on. Observed on May 10 and scheduled again for October 11 in 2025, this year’s campaign emphasizes the creation of bird-friendly cities and communities. The theme underlines the growing impact of urban development on avian species and the need for responsive urban planning that prioritizes conservation.

WMBD 2025 calls on national and local governments, businesses, communities, and individuals to take concrete steps to support migratory birds. These include habitat restoration, pollution control, and building design modifications to prevent bird collisions. The campaign reinforces the message that both urban and rural communities have vital roles to play in ensuring the safe passage and survival of migratory birds.

With its new designation, Baidyabati sets a precedent for urban centers across India and the world, demonstrating that ecological responsibility and community involvement can work hand-in-hand to protect the planet’s migratory wildlife.

Coastal Surveillance Intensified in South 24 Parganas Despite Ceasefire Between India and Pakistan

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, South 24 Parganas, May 12, 2025 : Despite the announcement of a ceasefire between India and Pakistan effective from the evening of May 10, heightened security measures continue to remain in place across various sensitive regions, including the Sundarbans in South 24 Parganas. While the immediate threat of military confrontation has eased, authorities remain on high alert, especially in the North and North-West frontier areas.

Amidst the ongoing ceasefire, enhanced vigilance has been observed in the waterways and coastal zones of the Sundarbans. In response to the tense geopolitical environment, joint patrol operations are being conducted by the Fraserganj police station and the Indian Coast Guard as part of Operation ‘Raksha Orange’. Surveillance activities are being carried out across rivers, estuaries, ferry piers, and key sea routes using the Fast Interceptor Boats (FIBs) stationed at Fraserganj.

Security forces have been instructed to interrogate any suspicious vessels or watercraft sighted in the region. All coastal police stations within the Sundarbans have been placed on high alert. Stretching over approximately 150 kilometers, the water boundary of the Sundarbans poses a potential risk for infiltration, prompting extensive deployment of BSF personnel along the riverine and forested zones.

The Indian Coast Guard is maintaining watch from floating border outposts in the Bay of Bengal, employing advanced surveillance tools including drones, sensors, fixed and mobile cameras, and night vision equipment. Regular round-the-clock patrolling is being carried out by both the Coast Guard and state police forces, especially in vulnerable stretches of the river and coastline.

In adherence to ongoing security protocols, a complete ban on fishing activities in rivers and the sea has been imposed. Fishermen have been instructed to refrain from using watercraft, and any vessel found operating is being thoroughly inspected.

The developments in South 24 Parganas are a part of the broader national preparedness, reflecting the unresolved tensions that persist despite diplomatic moves toward de-escalation.

Kalyan Banerjee Urges Swift Action for Release of Detained BSF Jawan Amid Ceasefire Tensions

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, May 12, 2025, Kolkata : Concerns have deepened over the fate of Border Security Force (BSF) jawan Purnam Kumar Sahu, who has remained in Pakistani custody since April 23 after inadvertently crossing the international border in Punjab. A resident of Rishra in West Bengal, Sahu was detained by Pakistan Rangers after allegedly straying across the border and has been held without release, despite diplomatic overtures and appeals.

Multiple efforts by Indian authorities to secure his release have so far failed, and the matter has drawn public and political attention. Trinamool Congress MP from Serampore, Kalyan Banerjee, expressed serious concern over the situation through his official social media handle, urging immediate action from both nations in light of the existing ceasefire. He called on authorities to prioritize the safe return of the jawan, stressing the emotional distress faced by the family.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee termed the situation as deeply distressing and stated that the state government is actively monitoring developments. She confirmed that MP Kalyan Banerjee has been maintaining regular contact with the jawan’s family and reassured that every possible step is being taken to facilitate his return. The jawan’s wife has formally requested a meeting with the Chief Minister, seeking her direct intervention in the matter.

The situation has become more sensitive following a recent incident along the international border in Rajasthan. A Pakistani Ranger was apprehended by the BSF in the Sri Ganganagar sector for allegedly attempting to infiltrate into Indian territory. Security sources reported that the individual was observed crossing into Indian soil under suspicious circumstances. BSF personnel responded swiftly, detaining the man before he could proceed further. Initial assessments indicate that he was unarmed and did not resist arrest.

The detained Pakistani national is currently under interrogation, with intelligence agencies working to verify his identity and possible intent. While officials have refrained from releasing further details due to the ongoing investigation, internal sources suggest the possibility of reconnaissance activity or other hostile motives is being explored seriously.

The arrest has triggered increased security measures along the border, with patrolling and surveillance operations significantly ramped up, particularly during nighttime. Security forces have been placed on high alert, with senior commanders instructed to remain vigilant amid heightened tensions.

This latest incident follows closely on the heels of the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed 26 lives, further straining relations between the two countries. Although a formal ceasefire is in place, recent developments have cast uncertainty over its stability, especially as nightfall reportedly saw renewed movements from the Pakistani side.

As the diplomatic silence continues, the family of Purnam Kumar Sahu waits in anxiety, clinging to hope that efforts at the national and state levels will ensure his safe and timely return. The situation remains tense but under close watch.

Four Arrested with Illegal Firearms Near Kolkata Airport; STF Recovers Arms from Bihar-Origin Smuggling Network

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, May 10, 2025, Kolkata :In a significant breakthrough against illegal arms trafficking, the Special Task Force (STF) of the West Bengal Police arrested four individuals and seized a large cache of weapons during a late-night operation on April 10 in Narayanpur, Haroa in North 24 Pargana within northern suburbs near Kolkata Airport. Acting on specific intelligence, the STF intercepted a white Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire suspected of transporting illegal firearms in the Narayanpur-Haroa belt of North 24 Parganas district.

The operation, executed swiftly and without resistance, led to the arrest of four suspects identified as Amirul Mondal (33), Habil Mollah (40), Abu Sahid Gazi (26), and Giyasuddin Gazi (24)—all residents of Haroa. According to officials, the accused were en route to deliver the weapons to criminal groups in the region.

A thorough search of the vehicle revealed a concealed bag containing a substantial cache of arms. The recovered items include a single-barrel long firearm, a double-barrel breech-loading (DBBL) gun, and an improvised 7 mm semi-automatic pistol, along with two empty magazines. Additionally, authorities seized six rounds of 12 bore live ammunition and eleven rounds of 7.65 mm ammunition.

Investigators suspect that the seized weapons may have originated from Munger, Bihar—a region known for the illicit manufacture of firearms. The car and all recovered items have been seized as evidence, and a formal case has been registered at Haroa Police Station. Preliminary interrogation suggests the accused may be part of a wider trafficking network operating across district and state boundaries.

The STF, in coordination with district police, is now conducting follow-up operations to trace the full extent of the arms network, including suppliers and intended recipients. Officials have also stepped up surveillance efforts in high-risk areas and intensified intelligence gathering to prevent further attempts at arms smuggling.

This successful operation reflects the increasing vigilance of security agencies in West Bengal and their commitment to curbing the proliferation of illegal weapons in the state.

Rakhi Bandhan Ceremony on Rabindra Jayanti in Hooghly: A Symbol of Unity Amidst National Tensions

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, May 9, 2025, Hooghly : In a unique observance of Rabindra Jayanti, residents of Hooghly district participated in a premature Rakhi Bandhan, following the teachings of Rabindranath Tagore to promote unity and brotherhood amidst the ongoing challenges. The celebration was marked by a symbolic gesture of solidarity and national unity, especially in light of the current geopolitical tensions.

On the morning of Rabindra Jayanti, a procession began from the Rattala of the Creation Dance Training Center in Chunchura, moving toward the Chunchura Rabindra Bhavan. There, participants garlanded the statue of the poet and performed the Rakhi ceremony, emphasizing the importance of harmony and mutual respect. As the procession moved through the streets, passersby were offered rakhis, symbolizing peace, unity, and the timeless ideals of Tagore.

The entire council of Chunchura Municipality, led by Jaydev Adhikari, actively participated in the ceremony, reinforcing the message of national unity. “Now is the time to come together,” said Adhikari, stressing that all differences should be set aside for the greater good. “Unity is the only way forward, and only through this unity will we instill fear in our enemies. When the people of India stand united, no power can defeat us.”

The event took on an additional layer of significance in light of the current conflict between India and Pakistan. Referencing the poet’s enduring message of brotherhood during the painful partition of Bengal, the ceremony also sought to underline the nation’s strength in the face of adversity. “The spirit of Rakhi reminds us of the bonds that keep us together, even in times of crisis,” remarked one participant. “This unity is more crucial now than ever, as India faces challenges abroad.”

While annual cultural events like dance and music performances are typically held to commemorate Rabindra Jayanti, this year’s celebrations took a more solemn turn due to the ongoing war situation. In place of festive activities, solidarity marches and Rakhi Bandhan ceremonies were organized, with participants carrying the national flag of India as a symbol of unity and patriotism.

The Rakhi Bandhan on Rabindra Jayanti not only honored the poet’s legacy but also served as a call for strength and solidarity during a time when the country faces both external threats and internal divisions. The spirit of the occasion resonated deeply with the message that only through unity can India face its challenges and emerge stronger.

“No Polling Booths in Madrasas” – Subhendu Adhikari’s Demand to Election Commission

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, May  8,  2025, Kolkata : A delegation of BJP leaders from West Bengal, led by the party’s opposition leader Subhendu Adhikari, recently met with the state’s Chief Electoral Officer to present their concerns regarding the upcoming assembly elections. One of the primary demands made by Adhikari was that no polling booths should be set up in madrasas across the state. The opposition leader also called for additional booths to be established in areas where Hindu voters might have to pass through Muslim-majority neighborhoods to cast their ballots.

Speaking to the media after his meeting with the Electoral Officer, Adhikari raised concerns about the safety and security of Hindu voters in areas such as Mothabari, Samserganj, and Dhulian. “In these regions, Hindus are feeling unsafe traveling through Muslim-majority areas to vote, and this has been a recurring issue in previous elections,” Adhikari stated. He further expressed that the presence of polling booths in madrasas, particularly in such mixed or Muslim-majority areas, makes Hindu voters vulnerable to potential attacks, citing incidents that occurred during the 2021 and 2024 elections.

The BJP leader’s comments highlight what he described as a perception of insecurity among Hindu voters in certain regions. “We have seen this in Mothabari, Samserganj, and Dhulian. Hindus fear they will be targeted if they pass through Muslim neighborhoods to reach polling stations,” he asserted. Consequently, Adhikari called for a change in the locations of the polling booths currently set up in madrasas. He further urged the Election Commission to consider setting up additional booths in areas where voters would otherwise have to travel through areas they perceive as unsafe.

While the Election Commission has yet to respond to these demands, Adhikari’s statements reflect ongoing concerns about election security and voter access in areas with mixed or polarized communities. The Commission is expected to take these issues into consideration as preparations for the upcoming elections continue.

Her statement came in the wake of reports claiming that over a hundred Pakistani militants and their families were killed in an Indian military operation late Tuesday night.

Addressing the public from Nabanna, Mamata Banerjee reassured citizens and emphasized the need for solidarity in these challenging times. “There is no room for panic,” she said, adding that the recent news should not be taken at face value. “You should not believe everything you hear. If anyone attempts to mislead the public, action will be taken against them,” she warned, referring to the spread of misinformation.

The Chief Minister also highlighted a recent meeting held by the Ministry of Home Affairs, which included discussions with Chief Ministers from various border states. While she refrained from revealing the details of the discussions, Mamata stressed that the focus should remain on unity. “This is not the time for divisions. We are all here to protect our country,” she said, emphasizing the importance of collective action against terrorism.

Mamata Banerjee made it clear that the fight against terrorism transcends religious or sectarian lines. “This is not about religion or community; it is about safeguarding Mother India,” she declared. She also urged the media to refrain from sensationalism, emphasizing that the focus should be on national security rather than increasing television ratings. “This is the time to protect the country. We must stand together, shoulder to shoulder, like our brave soldiers,” Mamata concluded.

The Chief Minister’s remarks reflect a call for national unity, urging citizens to stay focused on the collective goal of protecting the country in these tense times. Further developments on the situation are expected as authorities continue their efforts to address the rising security concerns.

Founded 25 years ago in Sarshuna, the institution has been a quiet but powerful force in advocating for the dignity, education, and full participation of children with special needs.

Themed “Consciousness, Compassion, and Freedom from Disability,” the event radiated warmth and joy as children from Behala Bodhayan participated in cultural performances, sharing with the audience their talents, emotions, and resilience. Their confident presence on stage reminded everyone that with acceptance and opportunity, every child can thrive.

The celebration was inaugurated by Swami Dibyajñananda Maharaj of Bharat Sevashram Sangha (Ballygunge branch), who urged all citizens to support children with special needs and participate in creating an inclusive society. Dignitaries present included Pandit Mallar Ghosh and noted audiologist and speech-language pathologist Md. Shahidul Arefin, who expressed his deep admiration for the children and the institution’s mission.

Speaking during the ceremony, Md. Shahidul Arefin shared, “Being on this stage made me realize that real therapy is not just about treatment or technique—it’s about love, dignity, and the right to live a life of respect. Behala Bodhayan’s work is not just an example of empathy, it stirs the very moral conscience of our society.”

The event also recognized former students Gaurab Ghosh and Robin Sau for their remarkable personal growth, symbolizing the long-term impact of inclusive care. Additionally, three individuals—Ahan Sengupta, Srijan Sengupta, and Soumya Upadhyay—were felicitated for their achievements as authors, having overcome language-related disabilities to contribute valuable literary works.

Founder-secretary Rikta Ghosh delivered an emotional address, reflecting on the institution’s journey. “Looking back on our 25-year journey brings tears to our eyes. The amount of neglect and adversity we’ve endured to create a safe and loving haven for people with special needs—who are often pushed to the margins of society—is indescribable. But standing in this joyful moment today, it feels like all our struggles have been worthwhile,” she said.

The programme concluded with a heartwarming cultural performance by the children of Behala Bodhayan. Their songs, rhythmic dances, and expressive dramas celebrated not only the joy of self-expression but also the beauty of life itself, offering a powerful message of inclusion and the boundless potential within every individual.

As Behala Bodhayan steps into its next chapter, its silver jubilee serves not just as a commemoration, but as a call to society—to listen, to include, and to uplift.

Crackdown on Rooftop Establishments After Mechua Bazar Tragedy: Bidhannagar Follows Kolkata’s Lead

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, May  4,  2025, Kolkata :
Following the devastating fire at a hotel in Mechua Bazar, the West Bengal government has launched a city-wide crackdown on unauthorized rooftop businesses. In the wake of the tragedy, which exposed serious lapses in building safety and fire norms, the state administration is taking no chances. Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim has already made it clear: rooftop spaces are common areas and cannot be sold, blocked, or commercially exploited.

Now, the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to follow suit. Mayor Krishna Chakraborty has initiated strict measures aimed at shutting down rooftop restaurants, bars, and cafés operating within the corporation’s jurisdiction. In a recent directive, she instructed the councilors of all 41 wards to prepare a comprehensive list of rooftop commercial establishments. This list will then be forwarded to the local police stations for verification and legal action.

“The councilors have been asked to submit details of rooftop restaurants and bars in their respective wards. Once we receive the complete list, it will be handed over to the police for inspection and further steps,” said Mayor Krishna Chakraborty. She also confirmed that she had discussed the matter with the state’s Municipal Affairs and Urban Development Minister, Firhad Hakim.

This enforcement action comes directly in line with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s strong directive after the Barabazar hotel fire, where rooftop operations were blamed for exacerbating the disaster. The Chief Minister emphasized that no rooftop commercial activity would be tolerated across the city. Firhad Hakim reiterated the same in a press briefing last Friday, stating, “No rooftop business can be allowed under any circumstances.”

In a swift response, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) and Kolkata Police conducted joint inspections across the city. Within 24 hours, they identified 83 high-rise buildings operating unauthorized rooftop eateries, bars, and hookah lounges—many equipped with tin sheds, thermocol canopies, and air-conditioning units in clear violation of safety norms.

With Bidhannagar now moving in the same direction, a sweeping clean-up of rooftop businesses is expected in Salt Lake, Rajarhat, and adjacent areas. The state’s intensified action signals a broader shift towards enforcing fire safety and building compliance regulations more strictly than ever before.
