A wave of grief and frustration has swept through West Bengal’s community of unemployed teaching job aspirants following the reported death of Praveen Karmakar, a former candidate who had long struggled with the emotional toll of not securing a government teaching post. His passing has sparked renewed outrage, with many alleging systemic recruitment irregularities and prolonged delays in justice.In response, the ‘Unemployed Teachers–Teachers Unity Forum’ announced in a press conference on Thursday that it will stage a symbolic protest march in Kolkata on Friday. The demonstration, described as a form of “half-clothed procession,” is aimed at drawing attention to what participants describe as long-standing grievances with the state’s teacher recruitment process.
According to the Forum, the protest seeks to pressure the state government and education department to act on several key demands:
A comprehensive and expedited investigation into alleged recruitment corruption, including the prompt release of the CBI’s findings.
Immediate dismissal of individuals allegedly appointed through irregular means, and the recruitment of eligible candidates.
An inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death of the former job aspirant, with appropriate compensation to his family.
Re-evaluation of all previously rejected candidates and steps to facilitate their fair recruitment.
A Forum spokesperson remarked during the press conference that the protest is not only a call for justice but also a symbolic reflection of the deprivation experienced by thousands of qualified candidates. “This is about dignity, transparency, and the future of our education system,” the spokesperson said.
The announcement has reportedly prompted administrative and police officials to convene meetings to discuss security and traffic arrangements for Friday’s planned demonstration. Law enforcement agencies are expected to be on high alert to ensure public safety and order during the event.
The protest adds to the mounting pressure on the state government amid ongoing scrutiny over teacher recruitment practices. With emotions running high and the issue gaining wider public attention, all eyes are on how the state administration will respond to the unfolding developments.
