Rakhi Bandhan Ceremony on Rabindra Jayanti in Hooghly: A Symbol of Unity Amidst National Tensions

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, May 9, 2025, Hooghly : In a unique observance of Rabindra Jayanti, residents of Hooghly district participated in a premature Rakhi Bandhan, following the teachings of Rabindranath Tagore to promote unity and brotherhood amidst the ongoing challenges. The celebration was marked by a symbolic gesture of solidarity and national unity, especially in light of the current geopolitical tensions.

On the morning of Rabindra Jayanti, a procession began from the Rattala of the Creation Dance Training Center in Chunchura, moving toward the Chunchura Rabindra Bhavan. There, participants garlanded the statue of the poet and performed the Rakhi ceremony, emphasizing the importance of harmony and mutual respect. As the procession moved through the streets, passersby were offered rakhis, symbolizing peace, unity, and the timeless ideals of Tagore.

The entire council of Chunchura Municipality, led by Jaydev Adhikari, actively participated in the ceremony, reinforcing the message of national unity. “Now is the time to come together,” said Adhikari, stressing that all differences should be set aside for the greater good. “Unity is the only way forward, and only through this unity will we instill fear in our enemies. When the people of India stand united, no power can defeat us.”

The event took on an additional layer of significance in light of the current conflict between India and Pakistan. Referencing the poet’s enduring message of brotherhood during the painful partition of Bengal, the ceremony also sought to underline the nation’s strength in the face of adversity. “The spirit of Rakhi reminds us of the bonds that keep us together, even in times of crisis,” remarked one participant. “This unity is more crucial now than ever, as India faces challenges abroad.”

While annual cultural events like dance and music performances are typically held to commemorate Rabindra Jayanti, this year’s celebrations took a more solemn turn due to the ongoing war situation. In place of festive activities, solidarity marches and Rakhi Bandhan ceremonies were organized, with participants carrying the national flag of India as a symbol of unity and patriotism.

The Rakhi Bandhan on Rabindra Jayanti not only honored the poet’s legacy but also served as a call for strength and solidarity during a time when the country faces both external threats and internal divisions. The spirit of the occasion resonated deeply with the message that only through unity can India face its challenges and emerge stronger.
